April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.
Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.
Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! If you would like to be a part of their mission and volunteer with this organization, you can! The following volunteer positions are available: Boat Crew Members, Boat Captains, Boat Maintence and Repair, Office Assistants, Building and Grounds Maintenance and Repair and Festival Booth Volunteers. Also, if you are interested in donating to their organization, you can safely and securly donate on their website when you click the ‘donate’ tab.
This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season. They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of

“Jungle Book KIDS” Members of the Summit Lane Elementary School drama club in the Levittown Public Schools performed their musical production of Disney’s “The Jungle Book KIDS” for students and family members on Feb. 27 and Feb. 28. The school gymnasium was transformed into a colorful jungle of plants, trees, vines and more to set the scene of the beloved story.
Students dressed in creative costumes for their production, dressing as elephants, monkeys, bumble bees, vultures, a snake, flowers and more. The talented cast told the story of a human boy Mowgli (Rachel Maurer) and his panther friend Bagheera (Mackenzie Restivo), who tries to get Mowgli back to the humans before the ferocious tiger

Shere Khan (Eunice Kim) gets to him. During this time, Mowgli meets animals and creatures in the jungle including Baloo (Fatehveer Hira), a giant friendly bear. including director Marjorie Wade, stage director Katie Stewart, producer Cynthia Dano, choreographer Tracy Smith and stage manager Kevin Gorman. The Summit Lane cast showcased their exceptional acting, dancing and singing abilities, performing popular songs such as “The Bare Necessities” and “I Wan’na Be Like You.”

Your life isn’t making you stressed. Your thoughts are making you stressed. If I had a dollar for every time I heard a friend, family member, business associate or a co-worker tell me they are stressed, I’d probably be retired. When a lot of tasks are on your plate at once, the human mind will fall in line with the perceived chaos of multiple deadlines or obligations, and will begin to scramble and spin around kind of like a dog frantically chasing its own tail. Have you ever witnessed a dog spin in circles chasing its own tail and going nowhere? It’s amusing and pity-inducing all at once, as you muse about what a futile effort it is. The dog is moving quickly, expending a great deal of energy and yet going nowhere. That is exactly what we do when we allow the mind to rapidly
spin in circles with stress. We are expending a great deal of energy and going nowhere. It is not the ten deadlines or laundry list of errands or looming term paper or sales quota that is making you stressed. It is your thoughts about said events that are making you stressed. Things, events and responsibilites are neither good nor bad; they just are. It is how we frame them within our emotional landscape and nervous system that determines how they make us feel. Many an afternoon, my son comes home from school declaring that he has too much to get done and it simply isn’t possible. It is true that he typically has some math homework, language arts homework, reading and guitar practice to juggle. When he does become overwhelmed, I let him know that it takes far more energy to “be overwhelmed” than it does to simply complete his tasks. Let that sink in. The truth is, the human mind has a tendency to underestimate the amount of time we have
and overestimate the amount of things that need to be done. We typically have more time than we perceive, more competency and stamina than we give ourselves credit for and less to actually do than our imagination would have us believe. When there is a storm of activity whirling around me, I keep it exactly there - around me, but not within me. The wind may blow my leaves around, but my trunk remains still. I know that nothing can be accomplished with chaotic energy, nor can it be accomplished by attempting to tackle everything at once. I make a mental note of what needs to get done, take each task one at a time, and work briskly yet attentively. I mentally pat myself on the back as each task is completed and crossed off my list. When others bring their frenetic energy into my sphere and express their own sense urgency, I let them know that I hear them and I understand the importance it has to them. I know that as I complete my tasks, one by one, all will get done and all will be well.

All About Reading Students at Wantagh Elementary School participated in the annual Pick A Reading Partner event during the week of March 4-8. Sponsored by the PTA, PARP encourages students to read an additional 15 minutes per day with a partner of choice, making this important life skill not only a school to home
connection, but fun and informative as well. To kick off the program and motivate the students, students were encouraged to dress like their favorite book character, and class parents read to students on Mystery Reader Day. “Jigsaw Jones” author James Preller also visited the school, explaining his writing techniques and giving students a glimpse
into his life as an author. “We are all unique,” Preller said.” You all have stories inside that only you can tell.” In addition, students shared favorite poems and original poetry during Poem in Your Pocket Day. There was an abundance of excitement in kindergarten classrooms at Mandalay Elementary School in Wantagh as students celebrated the birthday of iconic author Dr. Suess. In addition to wearing crazy hats and reading a multitude of Dr. Suess books, students rotated at fun, Seussthemed stations on March 8. Kristin Rogate’s students
first designed a sock after reading “Fox in Socks.” And then matched Seuss characters to clues in a Write the Room activity. They also used cubes to measure Seuss characters. Working with Ms. Rogate, the kindergartners then sorted “op” words, placing the real words and nonsense words in two separate columns on the SmartBoard. Kindergarten students
in Cheryl Schwartz’s class also designed socks and made popcorn pictures using op words from “Hop on Pop.” They participated in a rhyming activity in which they deciphered real words from nonsense words and worked with Ms. Schwartz to create words containing “op” as read in the popular story “Hop on Pop.”

Turkey Meatloaf Your Family Will Love
This week we're sharing a recipe for turkey meatloaf that requires only a handful of ingredients and is sure to please the entire family.
Preparation In a large mixing bowl, combine ground turkey, Lipton onion soup mix, eggs, water, ketchup and bread crumbs.
Use 2 lbs. of chopped turkey meat for a larger gathering of four or more people, or 1 lb. for three or less people. The below is the full recipe for 2 lbs. of turkey meat. For 1 lb. simply cut all ingredients in half.
Fold, knead and mix together using your hands (don't forget to wash hands after handling raw turkey meat). With a large serving spoon, scoop mixture into baking pan and evenly spread out, shaping into a loaf shape.
What You Will Need 2 lbs. of Ground Turkey 1 packet of Lipton Onion Recipe Soup & Dip Mix 2 Whole Eggs 3/4 Cup Water 1/3 Cup Ketchup 3/4 Cup Plain Dry Bread Crumbs
Place pan onto center rack of oven and bake for one hour. Let stand for ten minutes and serve with your favorite sides. Enjoy!

Life Lessons Through Golf Students at Wisdom Lane Middle School in the Levittown Public Schools participated in a golf unit hosted by The First Tee of Nassau County during their physical education classes on Feb. 26. Kara Cook, girls golf coordinator and Callen Williams, outreach and education manager from The First Tee of Nassau County spoke to students about important life skills and the game of golf. Cook and Williams introduced themselves to classes
and spoke about the opportunities that The First Tee of Nassau County offers. Cook explained that students involved in the educational program not only learn how to play golf but build character by learning important life skills such as respect. They showed students how to properly greet others by looking them in the eye and giving a firm handshake. “It’s not just about golf,” said Cook. “It’s also about learning skills and values that can
help you make sure you get to that place in life that you want to be.” The gymnasium was set up into golf stations where students learned how to properly put, chip and pitch. Williams demonstrated what the students had to do before breaking them into groups to practice their golfing skills. Cook and Williams plan to come back to the school again to help the students on their golfing technique, while providing helpful life lessons.

Nearly 40 students from the East Meadow School District’s Woodland Middle School and W.T. Clarke Middle School have been selected to showcase their work at the 2019 Long Island History competition, which will
be held on March 31 at Hofstra University. This event, which serves as an initial round of the National History Day contest, will feature the winners of school-level history day exhibitions. Seventhand
eighth-graders from both middle schools presented their projects to building and district administrators on Feb. 8. They covered a variety of historical topics including the Boston Tea Party, Transcontinental Railroad, Salem Witch
Trails, the Great Bengal Famine, Women’s Suffrage, The Battle of the Alamo and the Great Purge, to name a few. National History Day is a highly regarded annual academic program for elementary and secondary
school students. Projects focusing on historical topics are developed through extensive research utilizing outlets such as libraries and museums. Students can present their work in the form of papers, exhibits, websites
or documentaries. Winners from the upcoming competition may go on to the next round – the New York State competition. The district wishes the best of luck to these students!
