h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-proﬁt organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Did you know that senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world? The number of Americans 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Below is a story about Michael, a Plainview resident. Michael wished for a record player and vinyl records. The Twilight Wish Foundation happily granted his wish, and as far as the records go, he received two of his favorites! Michael had worked in insurance and took an early train into the city every morning, returning home late at night. By the time he retired, he was ready for senior living accommodations. However, retirement did not stop his desire to volunteer. Prepandemic he worked closely to help people who were lower functioning/ had dementia. During the pandemic,

for their race bibs as well as a street address in order to receive their medals. Proof of finishing all 3.1 miles is not required to receive the medal, but the Foundation is encouraging all participants to share photos form their virtual 5k with the hashtag #HugsForSarah5k. Participants can begin the race any time after registration, but must share their completion efforts prior to May 31. Anyone registering prior to April 10 will be entered in a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card as well. The Sarah Grace Foundation is named in honor of Sarah Grace Weippert, who lost her ninemonth battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in November 2002 at 12 years old. A 5K race equals 3.1 miles, and this year, Sarah would have turned 31 years old on March 31, so join Matt, Marissa, and James Weippert as they run the 3.1 for Sarah and all children with cancer in the #HugsForSarah5k. All proceeds from the race will support the programs and activities of The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, an all-volunteer organization. Core programs include The Escape Hatch, Gabe’s Chemo Duck, The Bead Program, Sarah Grace’s Book Angels and holiday toy distributions. The Foundation also provides financial aid for families, including; meals, transportation, household expenses and funeral expenses. The Foundation is currently working on additional virtual-based fundraising efforts. In the 1640s, the Halsey family began farming in the Water Mill and Bridgehampton area. Today, their family farm tradition continues as Milk Pail Fresh Market & U-Pick, which is run by both Amy and Jennifer Halsey. Both Amy and Jennifer received agricultural educations and returned to the farm after college. Amy manages the retail store, helps design gardens, custom designs planters and more. Jenn is on the farm growing the crops. She once had even been named New York Young Farmer of the Year by the New York State Farm Bureau and proudly represented her state at the national finals held in Texas. At their farm they grow apples, peaches, pumpkins, blueberries, pears and table grapes. Many value-added products are made from their produce, including fresh apple cider, apple cider donuts, apple and pumpkin pies and more. With the help of their dedicated staff, this family farm continues many traditions, while also trying new ideas to grow the business! Running a farm is no easy task, but Amy and Jennifer make it seem so! Visit their farm for a great experience on the East End.

Rhonda Klch is the Executive Director and Founder of Equity First, which was formed in 2004. This organization provides financial education, literacy and best practices to the community at low or no cost. Financial decisions are based on emotional scenarios, often times leading to clients making poor choices and decisions in regards to their future. Equity First creates and implements an approved client plan until the desired result is achieved. Their programs include money management, budget reviews, financial well check, credit restoration, debt settlement, bankruptcy consulting, loss mitigation services and more. Each service is paired with ongoing consultations to ensure a thorough understanding of timelines, expectations and benchmarks. Rhonda and her team are making an incredible impact in the Long Island community. In addition to financially assisting others, during the pandemic they have also given locals in need food, gift cards, personal hygiene products and more.

Lisa Gatti is the Founder and CEO of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian and the mother of her 13 year old daughter, who is the pride and joy of her life. Her passion for horses and teaching began at a very young age. In college, she was the captain of the equestrian team and she graduated with a dual degree in Elementary and Special Education. She has supplemented her education throughout the years by taking other educational programs. In 1996 and 2000, Lisa was named as US Team Leader for the US Equestrian Paralympic Team in Atlanta, Georgia and Sydney, Australia. From 2008-2013 Lisa served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of EAGALA, the global standard for equine assisted psychotherapy and personal development. In 2015, Lisa was named to the Board of Autism Communities. Most recently in 2019, she was appointed to the Town of Islip Disability Advisory Committee to help local government identify the most crucial issues facing our special needs population. She was honored with the 2020 Woman of Distinction and Distinguished Service Award from The Town of Islip, is a current finalist for the Imagine Awards for the Leadership Excellence Category and just received the 2021 Circle Of Excellence Award from the Long Island Business News. Throughout the pandemic, she still sees the greatness around her everyday and believes that when we see it in others, we know it, and when we trust its presence in ourselves, we embody it.

Eileen Scanlon has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for 30 years. She has worked with Corporate America, Non Profits, Academia and local grass-roots organizations. YES and LCAC Offer FREE TIPS Training for Businesses Serving or Selling Alcohol Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC) and YES Community Counseling Center is offering free training to local businesses who sell or serve alcohol. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many new guidelines and restrictions to our retail and service establishments that serve and sell alcohol. To assist local businesses, YES Community Counseling Center (YESCCC) and Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC) are hosting FREE TIPS Training, a skills-based training designed to prevent intoxication, drunk driving and underage drinking. TIPS will be offered VIRTUALLY to local off-premise businesses and employees (liquor, grocery, convenience, retail, etc.) on Wednesday, April 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and to onpremise businesses (bars, restaurants, etc.) and their employees on Thursday, April 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. TIPS (Training Intervention ProcedureS) is an approved alcohol training awareness program by the New York State Liquor Authority. The training is part of YESCCC’s Partnering in Action Change for Tomorrow (PACT) federal grant initiative and LCAC’s Drug Free

Cooked Up Donations The Wantagh High School newspaper “The Warrior,” in conjunction with the Wantagh Animal Rights and Recycling Club and the National English Honor Society, raised $1,030 in sales for the “Wantagh Warrior Holiday Cookbook: Cooking Our Way Through 20202021.” Proceeds were recently donated to Last Hope Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation in Wantagh and to Island Harvest. The cookbook, which

contains delicious recipes, stories about pets adopted during the pandemic, articles by students and faculty, tributes to the school’s essential workers and photos of holiday decorations at Wantagh High School, was written and published prior to the holidays. “It was a project that connected the community during the pandemic and placed a smile on those who read it,” said newspaper adviser Kathleen Flynn.

Wantagh High School student Nora Toscano, who was instrumental in the cookbook’s genesis and completion, was on hand to present a check to Last Hope Animal Shelter. The cookbook was “a way to bring the community together and for students to connect during a difficult time,” Nora said. “In addition, the project ended up helping people all over the community.”

FREE ALCOHOL AWARENESS TRAINING - FREE Alcohol Awareness Training is being offered by YES Community Counseling Center’s PACT Initiative and LCAC for employees and managers working at bars, restaurants and retail stores that sell and serve alcohol in Levittown. Communities Program to reduce underage drinking, intoxication and drunk driving. TIPS is supported by the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County Police Department, YES Community Counseling Center and the Levittown Chamber of Commerce. Businesses are invited to the innovative VIRTUAL training which seeks to enhance the fundamental “people skills” of servers, sellers and consumers of alcohol. In addition, TIPS training can reduce exposure to alcohol liability lawsuits and

reduce penalties for alcohol violations; lower insurance premiums; improve customer service and satisfaction; and promote community safety. Kennedy Cyberpatriot Team Named State Champs

Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s John F. Kennedy High School’s upperclassman CyberPatriot team has been awarded the New York State Championship in the Air Force Association CPXIII competition, placing 60th in the nation out of 2,633 teams. This year, both Kennedy High School CyberPatriot teams earned spots to compete in the Platinum Tier. “Our students studied windows and Linux operating

systems and completed online coursework in the CISCO Net Academy while learning how to use industry networking software such as packet tracer,” explained Robert Soel, district science chairperson and STEM chairperson. The CyberPatriot teams of students from Kennedy excelled in the qualifying rounds, demonstrating teamwork, critical thinking skills and technical knowledge key to a successful career in cybersecurity. “Our sophomore team had

an impressive run as well and placed in the top 11% of the teams in the nation,” he added. CyberPatriot’s core program – the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition – challenges teams of students across the United States, Canada, and other schools abroad, to find and resolve cybersecurity vulnerabilities in simulated environments. In all, more than 4,800 teams registered to compete in CyberPatriot XIII.
