By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I want to begin by expressing my sincere appreciation to all those readers who took the time to reach out in the last week to express condolences on the passing of my “Pal,” to relate to the sense of loss, to the closeness felt… but, mostly, to comment on how fortunate I was to share such a special bond with my grandfather and develop so many wonderful memories through the years. It is with that sentiment that I choose to pick up this week’s column. Rather than dwell in the sadness, I choose to reflect with a smile – on the love, the laughter, the photo albums, the video footage, the small possessions that embody much larger stories –
all the components that make pile of “unattributed” wisdom up a life well-lived. we all love to call upon from time to time. No matter the Family is precious. We source, the message is clear. know this, of course; but And so, we smile. We reflect. I think we tend to forget just how meaningful those We shed a happy tear here and connections are from time to there. But, most importantly, time. Only when called upon we remember. Scholarship Winner MacArthur High School sophomore Hannah Grunfeld is one of 10 students from across the nation, who has received a scholarship to travel to New Delhi, India this summer with American Field Service Project Change. For two weeks, she will assist a consortium of student-volunteers in educating children about proper diet and nutrition, especially those who are obese and malnourished.
AFS was founded on the idea that cultural exchanges can lead to better understanding and cooperation among nations. Since 1914, students have submitted ideas for a volunteer project that could have a meaningful impact abroad. Hannah became a runnerup for her essay describing the idea of converting old school buses into classrooms for students in Ghana. Even though her
project was not chosen, she will be able to support the winner’s project. “It has always been my dream to travel the world one day, and to start so young is truly amazing,” she said. Hannah will also spend an additional 17 days in Nicaragua this summer volunteering with Global Works, where she will assist in the local medical clinics and install water Lee Road Elementary systems in homes. Microscopes & Microbes Mandalay Elementary School third-graders in the Wantagh School District got a closer look at tiny living organisms thanks to a workshop with New York Hall of Science. The students learned about microbes which live in
fresh water lakes and ponds on Long Island and are not visible to the naked eye. To prepare the students for their scientific research, Hall of Science teacher Don Luistro taught the students how to properly use a magnifying
glass and the parts of a field microscope. He also demonstrated how to take a culture and to prepare a slide for observation. After the students observed their findings, they recorded and identified the microbes on a worksheet.
Under the stage lights, hundreds of East Meadow School District student-musicians gave a captivating performance for family, friends, faculty and administration during the annual district music festival at LIU Post’s Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. Woodland Middle School’s Vocal Jazz Choir opened the ceremony with a world-renowned performance incorporating vocal beat boxing, hand motions and modern day musical elements under the direction of Jonathan Ross. Next, the District High School Chamber Orchestra, consisting of musicians from East Meadow and W.T. Clarke
high schools, and the District Middle School Chamber Orchestra, including students from Woodland and W. T. Clarke middle schools, serenaded the audience under the direction of guest conductor Reuben Blundell. Currently in his second year, Dr. Blundell serves as music director of the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra in Philadelphia and as principal conductor of the Riverside Orchestra on New York’s Upper West Side. Including orchestra students from each elementary school, the District Elementary String Orchestra delighted the crowd with their musical performance under the guidance of conductor
Eileen Murphy. Ms. Murphy is a proficient conductor, violinist and music educator, who has taught all levels of strings in the Manhasset Public Schools for 35 years. Closing the program, the three orchestras gathered on stage for one final musical piece. Under the direction of Bowling Green and Meadowbrook elementary schools orchestra teacher Kristen Bean, the musical troupe gave an outstanding performance, receiving a standing ovation from spectators. The district commends these musically talented individuals for their hard work, diligence and collaboration.

In the Merrick School District, Birch School kindergartners celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday with education-themed activities. Loretta Vernet’s class kicked off the celebration with her students dressing in wacky clothing coinciding with Dr. Seuss’ book “Wacky Wednesday.” During the day, students applied their literacy and creativity skills, writing sentences using real and nonsense
words. Continuing the celebration, kindergartners transformed into “Thing 1” and “Thing 2,” collaborating with a partner to read the author’s classic stories. On their final day of celebration, Mrs. Vernet’s class held a contest to vote on which Dr. Seuss book was their favorite, explaining why they chose that book. The students also received a special visit from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dominick
Palma who dressed as “The Cat in the Hat.” He answered questions about life as a cat and read his favorite story to them. Enjoying the celebration as well, Denise Kvint and Traci D’Alessandro’s class read Dr. Seuss books all week. In addition, they created “Cat in the Hat” hats using words that rhymed with cat such as hat, mat and bat. Her class also cooked green eggs but no ham as a delicious treat during the festivities.
Chopping Locks At its sixth Chop Your Locks for Charity event benefitting the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, Wellington C. Mepham High School students and staff, as well as community members, trimmed and bared their heads to raise money for childhood cancer research. The effort was lead by teachers/coaches Kerry Dennis and Chris Patten and executed by seniors in the service learning project. “We talk a lot about
legacy and what the class of 2016 will be remembered for and it’s this type of lesson,” said Principal Michael Harrington to a packed gymnasium on March 16th. “A lesson about dedicating our lives to helping others.” Raffles and baked goods were also available for purchase throughout the evening to help with raising money. “From fundraising and promoting to gathering prizes to be raffled, our students worked together

for an incredible cause,” said Patten. “I think what makes our St. Baldrick’s event special is that not only does it bring the students and staff at Mepham together for one cause, but it brings our community together,” added Dennis. Guests were treated to an Irish step dancing performance before volunteers from Bangz assisted with haircutting and shaving. As of now, they raised $45,300.

in Whitestone on February 9th. They competed against automotive students from the downstate New York and Long Island areas for scholarships and a chance to compete at the nationals, as well as to represent New York at the International
Jazzing it Up Automotive Show, held at the Javitts Center in April. In addition, the Greater New York Automotive Dealers Association named automotive technology instructor Michael Marino Automotive Teacher of the Year.
Members of the Grand Avenue Middle School and Wellington C. Mepham High School jazz bands recently participated in the 2016 Herricks Jazz Festival. This is a non-competitive festival in which student groups perform and then
receive feedback & critique from an adjudicator. In addition, students had the opportunity to talk with professionals about jazz as an art form, listen to other Long Island high school ensembles and attend a rhythm section workshop. “It was a great day for
our middle school and high school musicians to come together and represent the music departments of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District,” said Cheryl Fontana, director of Fine & Performing Arts and Adult Education.

During Wantagh High School’s World Language Honor Society Induction on March 9th, the World Language Department presented seven seniors with awards for having demonstrated excellence in the study of French, Italian or Spanish. Lauren Bednor and Emily Sullivan received recognition for their study of Spanish, while Sophia
Liu and Cristina Zirilli were honored for their study of French. Nicole Palas and Peter Albanese were honored for excellence in the study of Italian. In addition, Vincent Esposito, an Advanced Placement Italian and Honors Spanish student, received an award for excellence in the study of multiple languages. “These students have emerged as the very best
among their peers, and we wanted to recognize them during the honor society induction,” said Patricia Calosso, supervisor of business education, world language and ENL. In addition to these individual awards, 53 high school and 100 middle school students were inducted into their respective World Language Honor Society.
Nationals Bid Four members of the Sanford H. Calhoun High School girls relay team sprinted their way to a win at the New Balance Nationals Indoor Track and Field Championships held at The Armory in New York City on March 11th. They now earned an invitation to run at the national championships this summer. “In attendance were the best athletes this country had to offer, and the girls from Calhoun were excited to prove they belonged,” said coach Joseph Migliano. The relay team of Cristin Rodriguez, Devon Bayer, Juliann Vizoso and Grace Moore ran the Sprint Medley Relay; consisting of 2-200m, 1-400m and ending with a 800m leg. “The girls got out to a blistering start as junior
Cristin Rodriguez, who is best known for her hurdling ability, ran a season best 27.2 seconds and transitioned into a smooth hand off to Devon Bayer,” said Migliano. “Devon ran a solid leg for the team holding off two girls who attempted to pass her during the 200m leg and handed off to senior captain Juliann Vizoso.” Juliann received the baton in fourth place, but wouldn’t stay there for long. She ran her best race of the year taking more than three full seconds off her 400m personal best to run 60.36 and set the team up in a great position. Grace Moore would receive the baton from Juliann and go out to run the fourth and final leg of the relay, Migliano explained. “Grace, who also

competed in the two-mile race only two hours prior, got out on a fast start. She ran an intelligent race and sat behind three other athletes for the first 400m; until the time came to go past,” he said. Grace anchored the team to a second place finish in their heat, and broke the Calhoun school record by 38 seconds running 4:14.42. That time was a five-second personal best for the girls this season and took their national ranking from 43rd to 25th in the country, Migliano mentioned. The time also earned the girls an invitation to run at the Spring National Championships held from June 17-19 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Drama Clubs have been busy preparing for their upcoming musicals. The season kicks off March 17th-18th, at 7 p.m. with the two middle school productions: “Guys & Dolls, Jr.” at Grand Avenue and “Grease” (school edition) at Merrick Avenue. Up next is John F. Kennedy High School’s production of the family favorite, “Shrek the Musical” with evening performances from March 18th-19th, at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a 2 p.m.
matinee on March 19th with a special cast meet and greet from 1 to 1:30 p.m. The Sanford H. Calhoun High School On Tour Company continues the fun with “All Shook Up,” inspired by and featuring the songs of Elvis Presley. Performances are held March 19th and April 1st2nd, at 7:30 p.m. Families are invited to attend the Little Elvis Sock Hop 50s Family Dance Party on April 2nd, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. The event features kid-friendly activities and treats such as egg creams, popcorn,

Prestigious Performances Levittown fourth-grader Daniel Lee of Gardiners Avenue Elementary School and third-grader Jacqueline Lu of Northside School, though just starting their music instruction, have already played their instruments on some of the nation’s most prestigious stages. Daniel, who plays the clarinet, participated in the first New York International Competition for Young Artists, performing at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall on February 28th. His performance
featured a professional piano accompanist. Private music teacher Shinae Kim prepared Daniel for the event and has worked with the him on clarinet for only one year. Pianist Jacqueline Lu was the first-place winner in the Suffolk Piano Teachers Foundation concert and will now perform at Lincoln Center’s Bruno Walter Auditorium on Apr. 26. She also earned a $1, 000 scholarship to attend master classes and performances in Paris and Lisbon this summer.
Jacqueline has performed for the Piano Guild and at the New York State School Music Association’s Spring Solo Festival for three consecutive years and was the third–place winner in the Suffolk Piano Teachers Foundation concert last year. In addition to playing piano, Jacqueline studies violin at school. The Levittown School District congratulates Daniel and Jacqueline on these accomplishments and continued success with their music.

In the East Meadow School District, W.T. Clarke High School held a send-off celebration in honor of the varsity cheerleading team competing in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Cheer Championship in Syracuse. NYSPHSAA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing impartial and safe competition for students of public, parochial and private schools, and is the first organization to classify cheerleading as a sport in the state. To qualify, the squad had to place among the top
10 percent in the county championship held on February 21st at Wantagh High School. During the send-off celebration, students, faculty and administration lined the hallways cheering while the Clarke band performed as the team boarded the bus, heading to the competition at Onondaga Community College. Cheerleading coach Nicole DiMarco shared how proud she is of the team for competing. “This is a tremendous honor for our team and I am so proud of their dedication,
hard work and effort.” She also thanked the school for hosting this celebration. “The little things like the big send off mean so much to the team and we are so grateful for their support as we head to competition,” she said. Clarke High School senior and four-year varsity cheerleader Miranda Dell’Olio expressed her excitement about the competition. “The team and I are over excited,” she said. “We have worked so hard and have all this potential to do really well in the championship.”
Willy Wonka Under the direction of Kimberly Davis and Samantha Dolley, Wantagh Middle School thespians presented “Willy Wonka” for appreciative audiences at the high school’s auditorium from March 11th-12th. The fun-filled play was based on Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and was adapted for the stage by Leslie Bricusse and Timothy Allen McDonald. The talented Joey Streib played the role of eccentric chocolate factory owner Willy Wonka. John Sileo played the role Charlie Bucket, the boy who finds the golden tickets to take
a tour of Willy Wonka’s factory. Playing the other golden ticket winners were Lauren Daniels (Veruca Salt), Chris Murale (Augustus Gloop), Joey Labo (Mike Teavee) and Jessica Schmidt (Violet Beauregarde). The cast of 55 also included the memorable OompaLoompas, the tiny chocolate factory workers, and iconic songs “The Candy Man” and “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket.” Ms. Dolley said the cast has rehearsed since December. The sets were professionally built and included a gate to Willy Wonka’s factory and purple
factory walls with gears and buttons. The strength of the show was the cast’s singing talents, under the direction of Peter Saladino, and flawless dancing numbers, she explained. The play’s success was also due to the orchestra, under the direction of Susan Babcock, and stage managers Bridget LaCova and A.J. Stein. “I am really proud of the students and how far they have come,” Dolley said. “They all worked really hard and the play will be remembered for a long time.”

Gardiners Avenue Elementary School fourthgrade students became “green engineers” during a workshop provided by the Maritime Explorium of Port Jefferson Village. Utilizing next generation science standards, presenter Melora Lane introduced the students to the recycling culture in
the West African country of Senegal, where the population reuses scrap materials. Using the design engineering process, the students then created a race car out of recycled materials. They had to use their prior knowledge of height, weight, friction and gravity and how
these parameters impact momentum while they tested their cars on a constructed ramp. The workshop was offered to the Levittown students as part of the district’s STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics) initiative.
Math Scholar Division Avenue High School student Michael Mahoney is the recipient of The Dr. Jong Phil Lee Memorial Scholarship for excellence in the study of mathematics.
The Long Island Mathematics Conference Board awarded Michael the scholarship totaling $1,500 at SUNY College at Old Westbury on March 11th. Teacher Todd Tomeo, who
accompanied Michael, was also recognized. The district congratulates Michael on this outstanding accomplishment.

On March 9th, a group of students from John F. Kennedy High School’s Spanish 4H and AP Spanish took a field trip to Manhattan to see the Broadway show “On Your Feet.” Leading up to the show, Señora Amanda Cooper, Señora Franca Fiorentino and Señorita Christine O’Neill prepared lessons about famous Spanish
artists and musicians, focusing on Gloria Estefan. Students investigated the impact that Gloria Estefan has had on her fans both in the U.S. and in Cuba and other Spanishspeaking countries. They loved the show, the music and learning about the inspiration for many of Estefan’s songs. “As a culmination to the trip, students will record
a two minute cultural comparison in Spanish (in AP exam format) to compare Gloria Estefan with a famous American musician,” said Renée Fallon, world languages chairperson. “This was a thoroughly enriching, cultural experience for the students who continue to rave about the play.”
History Day On March 6th, John F. Kennedy High School seniors Sophia Berin, Bailey Germann and Elizabeth Lau participated in the Long Island History Day competition at Hofstra University. They presented research papers they wrote in social
studies teacher Dennis Urban’s historical research class, Uncovering the Past, which is the capstone course in the Gilder Lehrman American History sequence at Kennedy High School. Sophia Berin won the Women’s History Award

Brookhaven Bowl science, life science, math and general science. The competition consists of round-robin rotations and a final elimination round. The Clarke eighth-grade team consisting of captain Ankit Sayed, Abishek Ravindran, Deeti Patel, Yuktha Chiguripaiti and Abdulhadi Javed competed in seven games, answering more than 200 questions. The team came in third place after a triple tiebreak
round among the top four competitors. Team Anarchy won for best Hip Hop Performance, Team Saxophoneless Jazz won for best Jazz Performance. Team Dennis took the crown in 2014 and Team Geller in 2015.
