Shore Road sixthgraders in Bellmore have embarked on a collaborate artistic representation of their connection to the school community, as well as their impending move to the middle school this fall. Called the “Sole” Mates Legacy Project, the students are working under the direction of visiting artist Catherine Russell to create a sail boat-themed
mosaic, which will be installed on the wall later this year as a parting gift to the school. The theme for this year’s project is based on Thomas S. Monson’s statement, “We can’t direct the wind, but we can adjust our sails.” During the final ceramic workshop encompassing the glazing process, the students painted the sailboats, which were first imprinted with the soles of
their shoes to add a design element to the design process and placed in a kiln. The brightly multicolored sailboats will then be arranged in a mosaic. Ms. Russell explained that though the students will leave Shore Road and their gift behind, the bond they share and the pride in their collective accomplishments will stay with them as they embark on new beginnings.
Long Island Yarn Crawl
After two successful years, nine yarn shops from Mattituck to Port Washington will be participating in the third annual Long Island Yarn Crawl from March 30th through April 2nd, 2017. Over the course of four days yarn crafters - knitters, crocheters, weavers and spinners - are invited to participate in this self-guided tour of our Long Island yarn shops, which will have extended hours and special activities throughout the weekend. It is a great way for crafters to explore what our local fiber community has to offer and meet other local yarn enthusiasts. Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor
maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all benefit from
slowing down the pace a bit, mentally and physically. What has rushing ever accomplished that more careful consideration and contemplation couldn’t have improved upon? Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. Like human, like pet. And with that, the clock has tolled on deadline. And so, In Step readers, I bid you a fond adieu. ‘Til next week. Make it a good one.

SAFETY PRESENTATION - NUMC participates in Bicycle/Pedestrian Safety Program at the Smith Street Elementary School in Uniondale, on Thursday, March 16th. ADVISORY BOARD MEETS - Members of the Nassau BOCES Adult Education Industry Advisory Board came together for their first meeting recently. About 25 representatives from a variety of businesses including Northwell Health, Sodexo, Spectronics, Formed Plastics and Plumbers Union 200 are among the volunteers who came together. They will work to help ensure that Nassau BOCES Adult Career and Technical Education Program aligns with industry needs. Suggestions from these meeting will be used to modify curriculum and to create a pipeline of job training to work for students and potential employees.

She took second in her heat running a time of 9.10 - a personal best. “It was a terrific end to the season for Cristin,” Migliano said. “We’ve been training since the end of spring nationals last year for a situation just like this and we were both really happy with the outcome.” Cristin had taken four to five weeks off after pulling a hamstring during the middle of the winter season, Migliano explained. “Every day, we worked on her hamstring and she would be at practice to mentor the younger athletes; she really is a very special young woman.” Despite the injury, Rodriguez closed the season running the fastest time she ever had and finished second in New York State.
“This winter season has probably been the best one of my high school experience so far,” Rodriguez said. “It was definitely a season full of growth, training to get better and learning to have the confidence to run against some of the best girls in the state and nation.” She also attributed a part of her success to Migliano. “He definitely helped me succeed throughout this season and prepared me to run the best personal records throughout high school,” Rodriguez said. “I’m very happy with what I’ve accomplished in winter and I hope to have an even better spring season.”

Representing Nassau County and Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, senior Cristin Rodriguez traveled to the New Balance Track and Field Center in New York City on March 10th to compete in her third consecutive Track and Field National Championships. Rodriguez, who ran the 60-meter hurdles, went up against state champions from Virginia, Texas and Florida. “This didn’t phase Cristin one bit,” said coach Joseph Migliano. “She got to her lane focused and determined knowing this would be her last indoor race as a high school athlete.” The gun went off and Rodriguez had a smooth start as she quickly jumped

background history on the meaning of each dance and how it is celebrated in its country of origin. “With only four sessions together, these thirdgraders have done an amazing job of learning the choreography and embracing the different traditions of these countries,” said Vanaver. Dressed in colorful headpieces, masks and traditional clothing, the students performed two dance recitals, one during the day for their peers and the other in the evening for parents. They also embellished their routines by explaining the history and cultural significance of each dance. Staci Allocco’s class gave a riveting performance of the samba, which is typically seen at the annual Carnival of Brazil. In traditional circle formation, Sherri Millevoi’s third-graders
delighted the audience while embracing the spring season with their Sweets of May Irish step dance. Traveling back to the swing era of the 1920s, Arlene Musnik’s class tapped, clapped and swung across stage with their Big Apple routine. Concluding the show, Linda Ronayne and Mindy Seltzberg’s class performed the Chinese red ribbon dance, which occurs during cultural and harvest festivals such as the Chinese New Year. With graceful choreography, they twirled red ribbons while parading alongside a traditional Chinese dragon. The collaboration of Vanaver Caravan artists and Birch’s teachers gave the third-graders a greater understanding of mutual respect, teamwork and dedication, as well as a deeper appreciation for the art of dance.

Third-graders at Birch School in the Merrick School District expanded their cultural horizons as they learned about dances around the world through the Vanaver Caravan Dance Residency Program, which culminated with a student performance on March 16th. Before taking the stage, the classes studied the history, geography, culture and traditions of Brazil, Ireland, the United States and China as part of their social studies curriculum. Under the direction of Vanaver Caravan cofounder and dance artist Livia Vanaver, each class spent a week practicing and perfecting their routines of samba, Irish step, swing and Chinese ribbon dancing. During one-hour sessions, they worked in groups and with partners as Mrs. Vanaver provided step-by-step instructions, as well as

The Healthy For Good movement is designed to inspire all Americans to live healthier lives and create lasting change. It focuses on the simple idea that making small changes today can create a

Studies have suggested that moderate physical activity has many proven benefits for overall health, such as lowering blood pressure, increasing HDL, or “good”, cholesterol and controlling weight. All these changes help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and
stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers. The American Heart Association will kick off the month-long campaign on National Walking Day, April 5th, to encourage people to move more by increasing their physical activity. The campaign is broken down into weekly themes. Week one focuses on walking and the basic tools you need to get

Pie was on the lunch menu at Salk Middle School in Levittown School District as faculty participated in a pie-eating contest to celebrate the mathematical constant “pi” or 3.14. During four scheduled lunch periods, faculty tried eating a whole pie filled with pudding and whipped cream; the person
finishing in less than three minutes and 14 seconds or less becoming the winner. Math students were the judges and the staff made the pies. Math teacher Kelly DeCunzo explained that the contest was hosted in recognition of Pi Day, which occurs annually on March 14th. “We are also showing our support
for the math department and trying to make the students excited about math,” she said. The competition was fierce as each contestant ate their pies without the use of hands of utensils. In the end, teachers Joe Castelli, William Kind, Brian Luball and Michael Tricarico were announced as this year’s winners.

Nassau BOCES D.A.T.E/ Model Schools Program Professional Developer Bonnie Foster and Island Park English as a New Language teacher Shannon Reda presented “Enhancing ELA Skills Through Digital Current Events” at the ASSET Technology Conference on March 13th. Participants learned about the app ‘NewsO-Matic’ and how Mrs.
Reda implemented this technology with her ENL classes. Nassau BOCES originally researched this product and provided implementation and training for the districts through the Title III Grant. ‘News-O-Matic’ is daily news experience for grades 1-8 that can also be used with high school students depending on their reading level. It allows youngsters a chance to read about
world news, sports, science and more, and interact with others by writing a response or drawing a picture that is shared worldwide. There are also Interactive maps, inapp audio playback of articles, definitions and pronunciations, games that relate to the news, and translations into Spanish, broken down into three reading levels.
Hempstead today hosted its first ever Greek American Heritage Ceremony. Supervisor Anthony J. Santino welcomed the community to Town Hall for a celebration that featured traditional dances, a keynote speaker and the presentation of six Greek American Heritage Awards. “Hempstead Town is near the epicenter of the New York Metropolitan area, which is home to the largest population of Americans with Greek ancestry,” Santino said. “While Greece celebrates its Independence Day on March 25th, we were proud to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Greek Americans in America’s largest township today on March 22nd at Town Hall.” Entertainment was provided by St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Greek specialties and refreshments were donated by the Empress Diner of East Meadow and Donma’s Bakery of Deer Park. The keynote speech was presented by Father Nikiforos Fakinos of Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Merrick. The 2017 Town of Hempstead Greek American Heritage Award winners included: Nick Boultadakis, owner of the Sand Castle in Franklin Square; Harry Demiris, Jr. Esq., attorney and distinguished past president of the East Meadow Kiwanis Club; Father Nikiforos Fakinos of Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Merrick; Despina Forakis, a math teacher at Roosevelt High School; Gus Potaris, owner of Pop’s Seafood Shack of Island Park and Chris Stefanakos, owner of Stefan’s Florist in Lawrence. Fr. Fakinos was also the keynote speaker of the evening’s program. “In recognition of Greek Heritage Month in March and the upcoming Greek Independence day, it was fitting to host the cultural celebration tonight at Town Hall,” Santino said. “Congratulations to all of our Greek American Heritage Award winners and a special thank you for their contributions to our communities.”

Program, during which the troupe staged a comedy improv show and helped the students identify key elements of a story such as plot, characters, obstacles and resolution. Having equipped the students with the tools to write their own stories, the Story Pirates returned to the Bowling Green stage for their New Story Show. During this assembly, they acted out some of their original greatest hits alongside students’ stories, which included “Lessons from the Haunted School” by Patricia Bertolini’s
third-grade class and “Thanksgiving Disaster” by fifth-graders Adrianna Desimine, Rita Gjonbalaj and Christina Taylor. Concluding the assembly, the Story Pirates awarded Adrianna, Rita and Christina tickets to their New York City benefit performance on May 13th. They also performed a sketch on the spot using ideas from the students in the audience, which resulted in a tale about a llama and a tiger purchasing a Nintendo 3DS.

Marie Testa, superintendent of the North Bellmore School District, will be honored by the Bellmore Lions Club at its upcoming 70th anniversary celebration dinner. Ms. Testa, a member of the Lions Club, will be the Community Honoree at the April 23rd gala at the Crest Hollow Country Club. Prior to becoming the district’s superintendent in 2013, Ms. Testa was a principal in the district for
eight years. She started her educational career in 1994 as a physical education teacher at Saw Mill Road Elementary School. Ms. Testa has cultivated a strong partnership between the school district and Lions Club. She creates connections that allow the serviceoriented organization to assist members of the community in times of need. On April 1, she will be the keynote speaker at the Long Island Lions annual conference to discuss ways to continue meeting the organization’s mission in a changing world. North Bellmore students also participate in several Lions Club initiatives including the Service Project Letter Campaign, in which children propose
and implement community service projects. “Our mission is to inspire children to contribute to the global community, and the Lions Club gives them meaningful opportunities to make a difference in North Bellmore and beyond,” Ms. Testa said. “The school district greatly values its partnership with the Lions Club. I am proud to be a member of this wonderful and supportive organization, and I share this award with my fellow educators.” She has previously been recognized as a Woman of Distinction by the New York State Senate and been named an Educator of the Month by News 12. Music in Our Schools In recognition of national Music in Our Schools Month, Winthrop Avenue School’s thirdgrade chorus, under the direction of music teacher Erica Davis, entertained family, faculty and peers during two concert performances on March 15th. In addition, students who would participate in the annual Eugene Reichenthal Recorder Festival accompanied the

Musical Director Amanda Cantwell coached the cast of more than 50 students in several musical numbers and solos. “The students continue
to impress me with their talents and dedication,” said Cantwell. “The level of performance they achieve at such young ages is amazing.” The stage was covered with neon-clad, 80s-themed costumes which were inspired by photos director/English teacher Rebecca Levy shared with the students. “These talented students spent months putting their

Alixandra Wilens, the Class of 2017 valedictorian at John F. Kennedy High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District, was one of eight students nationwide to be awarded the coveted Scholastic Gold Medal Award for her writing portfolio. Wilens was also awarded three silver keys at the regional level for her six submission pieces – which included a compilation
singers and demonstrated their recorder skills for audiences. Principal Sally Curto thanked the community for their support of the district’s music program. “This concert is an opportunity to show the community how important music is to us at Winthrop Avenue,” she said. The students sang “There is a Melody,” the Irish jig “Wee Falorie Man” and
not many changes were needed because of her talent. Wilens serves as the co-editor-in-chief of the school’s newspaper, The Cougar Crier, and is a member of several national honor societies, Mu Alpha Theta. She was also named a National Merit Commended Student. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7–12. Within the Awards’ 29 categories, a recordbreaking 330,000 works of art and writing were submitted for adjudication at the regional level this year. An Irish Tradition The sweet smell of fresh bread wafted through the halls of Wantagh Middle School as Anne Craven’s home and career students prepared and baked Irish soda bread to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
In preparation for their assignment, the students learned about the significance and evolution of each ingredient and Ms. Craven, whose family resides in Ireland, shared her experiences about her
visits to the country. The lesson ended with the tasting of their loaves, accompanied by a cup of tea to top off the celebration of the popular holiday.

Educators shared their knowledge with each other at the North Bellmore School District’s Superintendent’s Conference Day on March 10 at Newbridge Road Elementary School. The district’s faculty and support staff gathered for an EdCamp-style program with the theme “Shine Your Light.” Participants could choose the workshops they wanted to attend, which were led by their colleagues. Each time slot consisted of at least a dozen workshops, with topics covering all academic areas. There were interactive classes in art, music and physical education, discussions on classroom book selections and introductions to the latest educational resources such as Breakout EDU kits and Ozobots. “We designed Superintendent’s Conference Day with the talents of our teachers and staff in mind,” said
Superintendent Marie Testa. “Our goal was to celebrate and cross pollinate the extraordinary gifts of our professionals. There is no better professional development than colleagues learning, sharing and conversing with colleagues and we have the best of the best in North Bellmore.” Karen Collins, a sixthgrade teacher at Newbridge, attended music, math and engineering workshops. She said these classes were full of ideas she can use with her students, such as educational apps. Nicole Martelli, an ENL teacher at Park Avenue Elementary School, cotaught a class on Thinking Maps. “Being able to share something I am so passionate about was extremely inspiring,” she said. “I also loved being given the opportunity to visit different workshops that sparked my interest.” A Twitter lounge was created outside the
gymnasium, where district technology experts helped teachers create their own Twitter accounts and showed them how to use the social media platform to share their classroom activities. Teachers were encouraged to share their photos from the day with the tag #NBignited. Martin Avenue Elementary School thirdgrade teacher Danielle Kalinowski described the “contagious buzz and energy” in the building and “invaluable conversations” that took place among teachers and staff. “It is clear that we have an abundance of quality teachers in this district with a wealth of knowledge to share,” Ms. Kalinowski said. “I am honored to be a part of a district that is willing to provide opportunities like this to their faculty and work alongside so many lifelong learners.”
Leprechaun Traps Leprechauns were on the loose at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District, and it was up to students to catch them. Students from the district’s ALPHA program, led by teacher Gayle Angert, worked together with kindergartners and
first-graders on a STEAM activity to construct leprechaun traps. Each group made a paper leprechaun, then had 40 minutes to build a trap to catch and hold it. The students worked together to come up with creative solutions while limited to the supplies

they were given including cardboard, glue, tape, straws, pipe cleaners, string and paper scraps. The activity helped them develop their problemsolving skills and fostered communication and collaboration as students from different elementary schools came together.

To Trap a Leprechaun leprechaun traps using a wheel axle, screw, wedge, incline plane or pulley. During an hour designated to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics), each team congregated in the school cafeteria with supplies brought from home. After filling
out inventory sheets and reading the challenge rules, the students utilized tape, glitter, Legos, boxes, construction paper and other essential supplies to produce the most effective designs to trap leprechauns.

A Groovy Guest Local officials and community leaders joined professionals from the East Meadow School District on March 16th to read to classes at George McVey Elementary School and encourage a love for reading in the young students. The visit was part of Guest Reader Day, a special event hosted by McVey near the close of its two-week Pick a Reading Partner program, which
ran from March 6th-17th. Sponsored by the PTA, McVey’s PARP program invited students to delve into the world of literature and engage in reading activities inspired by this year’s theme, “Reading Is Groovy.” Among those who read to the students in grades K-6 were Assemblyman Tom McKevitt, Nassau County Legislator Norma Gonzalves, Hempstead Town Clerk Nasrin

“Most of the calls have dealt with family relationships, financial issues, resources for getting help in various aspects of their lives, and the feelings of isolation and loneliness, especially now in the winter months,” said Linda Leonard, Executive Director of LICC. “It was also remarkable to see that even with their own problems, many of our senior citizens called because they were concerned about others – from their adult children with addiction crises to relatives voicing suicidal thoughts. Today’s senior population deserves our care and attention – we thank Supervisor Santino for taking a leadership role in this initiative.” Counselors say the holiday season can be particularly difficult for seniors. Issues such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known as the “Holiday Blues,” can manifest themselves through depressive symptoms. The Senior Connection Helpline is a 24/7 service that will give seniors in
crisis the critical help they deserve. The helpline is staffed with highly trained professionals and exceptional volunteers. The LICC has over 45 years of suicide prevention experience and their staff members utilize the “Active Listening Skills” method to speak with the troubled callers. Thanks to a grant from the Town of Hempstead’s Planning and Economic Development Department, the service is available completely free of charge. The LICC began visiting each of Hempstead Town’s 16 senior centers to spread the word of the helpline and their other services. Physics Earns First Wellington C. Mepham High School’s physics team competed at the 33rd annual Physics Olympics held on March 17th at Farmingdale State College, clinching the overall firstplace trophy. Ailish Egan, Pavan Patel, Will Rosen, Kevin Weber
and Zach Weiss competed against a field of 18 wellprepared high school teams from all over Long Island in the the Olympics, which were sponsored by the Long Island Physics Teachers Association. “The Mepham team earned second-place
trophies for the Physics Bowl and the Bowling for Glory events, however they scored so well in all of the events that the team took the overall first-place trophy in what was a very close competition,” said William Leacock, teacher and team adviser.
The members of Woodland Middle School’s Peer Helpers club in the East Meadow School District inspired sixth-graders to make a positive impact on others during their “Pay It Forward” assembly. This presentation is based on the novel by Catherine Ryan Hyde. At the opening of the presentation, each sixthgrade student was given one blue and one orange index card. Members of the Peer Helpers wrote a story
about one day in the life of a student. They instructed the sixth-graders to hold up a blue card when they heard a positive statement and an orange card for negative statements. As the students held up their color cards, the Peer Helpers placed the matching color Post-it on a huge heart in the front of the auditorium. This served as a visual representation of how negative words and feelings can affect an individual in one day. Following this activity,
the students watched a video clip from the movie, “Pay It Forward.” The clip explained the theory that if you do something kind for someone, they in turn, will pay it forward to create a chain reaction of positive change. The Peer Helpers encouraged the sixthgraders to spread kindness throughout the school by extending themselves to other students, whether by saying hello, helping to carry their books to class or sitting with a new student at lunch.

The Levittown School District honored its talented spellers during the board of education meeting on March 15th at the Levittown Memorial Education Center. Elementary school students Benjamin Campbell (Gardiners Avenue), James Ganga (Northside), Alex Gao (Abbey Lane), Melody Hong (East Broadway), Meghan

Salk) were eight out of 115 contestants who competed in the annual Long Island Regional Spelling Bee, held at Hofstra University. In addition, Alex Gao placed sixth in the final round of the challenging

Only three months after Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino announced the launch of a senior suicide hotline, in tandem with the Long Island Crisis Center (LICC), over two hundred seniors have reached out for help. The 24/7 helpline assists mature residents who are in crisis. Experts indicate that the holidays and winter months can be a particularly difficult time for senior citizens who are battling depression. The LICC logged 242 calls from December 1st, 2016 through March 1st, 2017. The LICC also began a series of Senior Crisis Intervention seminars at Town of Hempstead senior centers that deal with grief, loneliness and depression. “The fact that over two hundred seniors reached out for help proves the need for this crucial service,” stated Santino. “The goal is to prevent senior suicide, combat depression and help people who are in crisis. After only three months, I am pleased to say we are making a difference.”

Under the direction of Joseph Roman, the MacArthur High School Marching Band performed in an exclusive Magic Kingdom March at Walt Disney World’s famous Magic Kingdom theme park in Orlando, Florida on March 16th. The performance was the highlight of a four-day trip and the culmination of months of planning, practice and fundraising by some of the high school’s finest musicians. This was the fourth time that the marching band was selected to participate in
the Disney Performing Arts program. Last October, Romano submitted a video recording of the band and an application to Disney World in the hope of earning a performance opportunity for the group. In November, the Disney Performing Arts program informed the school that the MacArthur High School Marching Band met the rigorous marching and music requirements and would be scheduled for a parade performance down Main Street USA in the Magic Kingdom.

Mary Poppins, a nanny hired by George (Harrison Borod) and Winifred Banks (Nicole Frascatore) in Edwardian London to take care of their children Jane (Jessica Schmidt) and Michael (Chris Murale). The play also included the lovable character Bert, played by Aidan Schroh. Led by Danilo Aviles, the pit orchestra performed many of the production’s most notable songs, including “Supercalifragilisticexpi-

In the Heights W.T. Clarke High School’s student acting troupe, Lights Up Productions, gave a riveting performance about the joys and heartbreaks of a tightknit community when they presented “In the Heights” on March 2nd-4th. According to the Rodgers and Hammerstein Theatricals website, “In the Heights” is the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three
generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind. Prior to the main performances, the school held a Senior Citizens’ Dinner Theatre, sponsored by the W.T. Clarke PTA in collaboration with the East Meadow Kiwanis and Clarke Theater Arts Parents Association. Community residents were invited for a delicious Italian dinner and a special viewing of this year’s spring musical,
with dinner service and ushering provided by members of the W.T. Clarke Middle School Builder’s Club and W.T. Clarke High School Key Club. The Lights Up Productions cast and crew would like to express their gratitude to director Kristen Norwark, vocal director Robin Hall, the design team, the stagehands, the tech squad, the orchestra pit – led by W.T. Clarke High School Music Chairperson Stephen Engle – and the district’s central administrators for helping to make the spring musical a success.
