Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Spring Musical Season Once again, it’s that time of year when students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have been busy preparing for their upcoming musicals. “Musical season is one of the most exciting times in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District,” said Cheryl Fontana, director of the fine & performing arts. “We have more than 200 students involved in our five productions. The team work and dedication that goes into mounting a musical is unmatched and seeing it all come together
on opening night is truly rewarding for all of our students and staff.” The entertaining season kicks off on March 14-15, at 7 p.m., with “Fiddler on the Roof, Jr.” at Grand Avenue Middle School and “Shrek, Jr.” at Merrick Avenue Middle School. Up next is the Sanford H. Calhoun High School On Tour Company’s production of the smash hit “Mamma Mia!” featuring the music of Abba on March 16, 22-23 at 7:30 p.m. Wellington C. Mepham High School’s Skull
and Bones Drama Club continues the fun with the recent Disney sensation, “Freaky Friday” based on original the iconic movie. Performances are March 21-23 at 7 p.m. John F. Kennedy High School rounds out the season with the hilarious musical comedy, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” Performances are March 29-30 at 7 p.m. and March 30 at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door on the night of each performance for all productions.
Get STEAMed on Sound Fourth-graders at Levy Lakeside School in Merrick recently conducted some experiments on the power of sound, with help from a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) educator from Hofstra University. Working in small groups, Hofstra master teacher and
STEAM educator Christina Drago-Botti led students in different experiments conducted in Lakeside’s STEAM lab. Students were asked to choose from various materials to build the best sound barrier. They also attempted to use the sound of clapping their hands to move grains of salt seated on clear plastic
wrap over a cup and even strung two cups together to determine how sound travels. Drago-Botti also showed students how to measure sound using a decibel meter and shared videos that demonstrated how decibel level has the power to shatter glass – even a windshield.

The General Douglas MacArthur High School varsity cheerleading team in the Levittown Public Schools came out victorious against their Division I small school competitors during the Nassau cheerleading championship at Hofstra University on Feb. 24. The team placed first with a score of 91.475, crowning them the Nassau County Champions for the first time in the school’s history. With the leadership of head coach Jacqueline Day and assistant coach
Shannon Pratt, the Generals were among seven teams to compete in the Division I small school category. The team will now move on to compete at the state championship on March 2 in Rochester, New York. “We’re still on cloud nine,” said Day. “These girls worked so hard and have come so far over the past couple years, we could not be more proud!” This is not the first time the team made school history this year. On Feb. 10, they placed third in the nation at
the Universal Cheerleaders Association National Competition against 35 talented teams across the nation in the medium D2 division. MacArthur Varsity Cheerleading has competed at Nationals for years but never accomplished such a high placement, receiving a bronze medal, in such a competitive division. The Levittown Public Schools congratulates the team on their tremendous accomplishment and wishes them the best of luck as they move on to states.
Wantagh HS Lauds Top Artists The Wantagh High School art department is pleased to announce that 17 students, under the direction of teachers Jacqueline Gallo and Danielle Macumber have received 19 regional awards in the 2019 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards contest, presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers is a nonprofit organization that identifies exceptional artistic and literary talent of students. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition, dating as far back as 1923, encourages students in grades 7-12 to submit works in 27 categories, including photography, painting,
mixed media, drawing and illustration and more. At Wantagh High School, all Advanced Placement Art students are required to submit works for judication. Students Alyssa Albanese (photography, “Thumbtacks”), Erika Meagher (photography, “Teardrop”) and Angelina Torre (photography, “Clementines”) were selected as Gold Key winners, and their works will be further considered for national recognition. Silver Key winners include Isabella DelaCruz (photography), Catherine Desiderio (photography), Hannah Eschmann (photography), Megan Lucy (photography), Grace Riddle (photography),
Hayley Vecchio (photography) and Helen Yao (painting). In addition, Athena Yao received two silver key awards for painting and one for drawing and illustration. Student-artists who received honorable mention awards include Debbie Boudouris (photography), Katarina King (mixed media), John Leahy (drawing and illustration), Miranda Maldonado (photography), Kaitlyn Quigley (mixed media) and Megan Wojcik (photography). New Assistant Superintendent
The Wantagh School District has appointed Anthony J. Cedrone as assistant superintendent for business. Mr. Cedrone will replace Adriana Silver, who has served as the district’s business official since 2013. A Wantagh resident, Mr. Cedrone joins Wantagh from the Carle Place Union Free School District,
where he served as assistant superintendent for business since 2007. He previously served as assistant to the superintendent for business and technology in the Merrick Union Free School District and in other financial roles in the Valley Stream Union Free School District 30, South Country Central School District and Hofstra University. Mr. Cedrone holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and economics from Queens College of the City University of New York, a Master of Business Administration in management from Hofstra University’s Frank G. Zarb School of Business and a professional development

Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year.

While it may be tempting to take a prematurely warm day as a sign that spring is in full force and purchase a bunch of annuals, it’s better to know the last of the possible frost dates (check “The Farmer’s Almanac”). Otherwise, you may waste your time and money planting flowers or vegetables only to have them zapped away by another frosty day.
Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency — just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on in the season. Speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden center about which types of amendments you can add to your soil in your particular area, in order to enrich your soil. Lawn and garden experts at The Home Depot suggest filling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water it, and continue to care for the entire area until the spot fills in. Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all of your tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed. Give outdoor entertaining spaces a good scrubbing, clearing away dirt and grime that may have accumulated over winter months. Use a leaf blower to blow away any leftover leaves. Check if your front porch, railings or decking need painting and/or staining. Tackle these projects when the weather is cooler
so everything will be ready for those peak spring days. Think about any annuals you might want to plant in the landscape this year that will complement your existing shrubbery or perennials. Come up with a theme so that
the entire yard is cohesive. Before homeowners know it, winter is gone and it is time to once again enjoy long days spent outdoors. Get a jump start on spring lawn prep as soon as you can.

How Do I Top That? After my last column expressing how much my late friend Brenna meant to me, I received an outpouring, not just from regular readers, but from Brenna’s family and friends, letting me know that the column I wrote about her touched them tremendously. Now, how do I top that? Have you ever felt that way? You deliver a tour de force, whatever that may be in your life or career, and now you are left with tackling your next act, only to think, “How do I top that?” Perhaps we are not meant to compete with our last great feat, but rather to integrate it into the intricate tapestry of who we are, and trust in what comes forth from there. Generally speaking, with an accomplishment of any kind, comes an unspoken promise of more and better accomplishments to come. Expectations rise and, with it, so does anxiety and selfconsciousness in its most literal term; an acute consciousness of the self. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard people
confess in their most candid moments that they are afraid of being exposed as a fraud, a sham, an imposter in their own life. I hear it from friends all the time. It all comes down to, “What do I do for my next trick?” I remember a magazine interview that actress Michelle Pfeiffer gave many years back, in which she confessed that every time she stepped onto a new movie set, she was convinced that would be the time she would finally be exposed as a bad actress and she would be fired on the spot. It’s funny, but these very human feelings can even extend to something as simple as planning your child’s birthday party. How do you top last year’s birthday party? Or will it even be on par with last year’s party? Will the apple pie you made at last year’s family gathering meet everyone’s expectations this year? Maybe you just signed a new client, and you’re wondering if your work will live up to their expectations? So, how do we defuse this common human ailment of the fear of living up to our own
expectations, and the expectations of others? Self-judgement is born in the mind. Turn down the volume of the mind and turn up the volume of the heart. The gut should always run interference. Some of what I write may be pure platinum, while other entries are gold, silver or even rust, depending on who you ask. I’ve certainly gotten a few rusty emails over these months. I’ve also gotten emails of appreciation and gratitude that have touched me deeply. One thing I will always serve up is my truth. That I know I can deliver every time, without exception. Having the courage to say, “This is who I am, and this is how I feel,” is the antidote to, “How do I top that?” syndrome. The next time you’re about to give your next presentation, create your next piece of art, cook your next meal, plan your next party or draw up your next big plans, if it feels right and it feels real, and it resonates with your heart and your gut, it’s a meaningful and worthy pursuit. How it will be received by others is anyone’s guess.

Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. There are unforunatelty 2,000 homeless children right here on Long Island, but thankfully Birthday Wishes works with 80 shelters/ transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties to give more than 120 children a birthday celebration each month!
