Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Angie Cullin, Councilman Gary Hudes and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad want you to win the lottery – a bike locker lottery, that is. The Town of Hempstead is currently collecting “lottery tickets” to select eight lucky residents who will have use of eight bike lockers at the Bellmore train station for a one-year period. Residents have until Friday, March 28th, at 4 p.m. to file their “lottery ticket,” which can be obtained by calling the Office of the Town Clerk at 516.812.3024. Only one “lottery ticket” per household will be accepted. Eight winners will be randomly selected through a lottery drawing on Monday, April 7th, and those residents can begin using them starting that day. “Any time you can leave the car in the driveway and use a clean means of transportation, it is a victory for our environment,” stated Murray. “We encourage residents to participate in the bike locker lottery for a chance to win use of a bike locker every day for one year.” Each of the bike lockers is 4 feet tall, 6 feet long and 3 ¼ feet wide, all conveniently located on the north side of the tracks at the Bellmore train station. Talking Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love … This is the topic I selected for my upcoming presentation at the annual C.W. Post Honors Conference, a oneday schedule of seminars and panels, lectures and performances, all centered around a common theme, this year’s being Creative Engagement. When initially approached about the prospect of being a part of this Conference, one I had attended each year of my own tenure at C.W. Post, my first reaction was the usual mix of anxiety and sheer terror that comes when any form of public speaking is broached. And this, for an entire hour, in front of the best and the brightest my alma mater has to offer? I could feel the panic setting in, and the event was still months away.

Now, only one week remains ‘til the big day – and I’m still wrestling with what, exactly, I have to offer this group of impressionable young minds, all at the point in their lives where they are desperately trying to do exactly what my title suggests – discover that passion which will drive them into a particular field, hopefully to stay, for a long and fulfilling career. I guess a good starting point would be the initial inspiration for my topic, a letter I received from a local reader many months ago, in response to a column I had recently published, stating: “I wanted to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” Creative Engagement at its best, no? Just the knowledge that my words had reached someone is some of the most positive feedback one can receive.

This is not to say that we all need constant pats on the back in order to feel valued and successful (although some certainly do). It simply reaffirms the notion that what we do for a living should be more than a job; it should reach far beyond the scope of merely being a means to an end, a way to pay the bills, etc. Above all else, it should engage YOU. If others find a similar connection through you, so much the better, an added bonus. I still don’t know exactly what I will say once I step to the head of the classroom a little over a week from now. But I suppose a good starting point is simply speaking openly and honestly and attempting to make a connection. And if I can reach even one person and help them discover his/her own passion in life, I will consider it a success.

Revolutionary Tea Dressed in period costumes, students in Donna DiPalo’s fourthgrade class at Abbey Lane Elementary School in the Levittown School District presented a report about a Revolutionary period historical figure who made a contribution to the country’s freedoms and served as a role model during that time. In the report, the students

had to include a biography of their figure, his or her accomplishments, one thing the figure would have changed and one thing he or she would want people to remember. “The students really had to get to know their character, which is a highlevel skill,” Ms. DiPalo said. Past U.S. presidents, Benjamin Franklin, Betsy Ross and Martha

Washington were some of the more popular choices. Some students educated their parent-audience with information about lesserknown figures including America’s first published African-American author Phyllis Wheatly, Nancy Morgan Hart and the female Paul Revere, Sybil Ludington. The activity culminated with a Revolutionary tea.

Celebrating Pi In recognition of March 14th as Pi Day, sixth-graders in Carolyn Acevedo’s and Gloria Panella’s classes at Bellmore’s Shore Road School hosted a Pi Day celebration. During the celebration, students determined the value of the mathematical constant 3.14 by measuring both the circumference

and diameter of an edible pie and applying the measurements to the formula for the circumference of a circle. The classes also created Pi plates and chains. By assigning each digit a color and writing an expanded form of Pi in a spiral pattern around a paper plate, the students created

a chain out of strips of colored paper that will be used to decorate the school hallways. The students will use the colored chain to create a frequency chart of the initial digits that comprise Pi to determine which digits appear the most and least.

On March 3rd, students in Antoinette Fortunato and Elaine Stephan’s life science group from Bellmore’s Shore Road School visited Spiga Bakery on Merrick Road. In preparation for the trip, the group studied measurement and capacity, bakery/kitchen vocabulary, kitchen appliances and kitchen safety, as well as following a recipe. While at the bakery, Chef Luca instructed

the students on how to bake a large batch of chocolate chip cookies. The students worked together and utilized their background knowledge of measurement, kitchen vocabulary, appliances and safety to make the cookie dough. They used various ingredients and were able to observe how the individual components interacted and changed from dry to cream to dough, and finally to formed, rounded

shapes. As the cookies were baking, Chef Luca took the students on a tour of the kitchen, explaining baking procedures and appliances. “The students were very enthusiastic and excited to eat their finished product,” said Ms. Fortunato. “Once the cookies were baked, the students got to enjoy the delicious finished product in the café area of the bakery.” LITERACY NIGHT - Parkway Elementary School student-musicians performed live at the school’s Barnes & Noble Literacy Night. Staff from The Nature Conservancy confirmed recently the presence of a pair of nesting Bald Eagles at The Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island, New York. The eagle nest at Mashomack Preserve is just the third known nesting site in the Long Island region in recent times. Tucked away high in an oak tree in a remote, hard to access location, the birds were discovered by Nature Conservancy’s Preserve Manager Mike Scheibel, who said, “Bald eagles have recently become a regular sight on Shelter Island. We are extremely pleased to find them nesting on the Mashomack Preserve where years ago The Nature Conservancy preserved this land as a secure nesting area for ospreys. It is indeed rewarding to know that this valuable habitat is now also home to our national symbol.” Edged in white by 12-miles of coastline,

Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island is considered one of the richest habitats in the Northeast. Just 90 miles from New York City, the preserve covers a third of Shelter Island with 2,039 acres of interlacing tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields, and freshwater marshes and is often referred to as the “Jewel of the Peconic Bay.” “The fact that bald eagles are nesting at Mashomack speaks to the value of preserved land and its significance for wildlife,” said Michael Laspia, Director of Mashomack Preserve. “We couldn’t be happier that our national bird is gracing us with its presence –and we hope this majestic species has a successful season rearing its young here.” Mashomack was purchased by The Nature Conservancy 34 years ago, in an effort to stop development of this nearly pristine peninsula and to protect an important concentration nesting ospreys along the northeast

coast. The bald eagle is an opportunistic feeder and subsists mainly on fish, although capable of catching live fish bald eagles are primarily scavengers feeding on dead fish found on the beach or stolen from ospreys. Ensuring that healthy fish populations –and good water quality is maintained in the Peconic Bay and other Long Island waters is a top priority for The Conservancy. “Decades ago, protecting land was enough to ensure the survival and viability of our local wildlife, but today our efforts are concentrated on keeping the lands and especially the waters around Long Island clean and healthy,” said Nancy Kelley, Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy on Long Island. “It’s especially important that we do everything we can to avert threats –like nitrogen pollution in our waters –so that our majestic wildlife species can survive and thrive here.”

In recognition of the service and sacrifices veterans have provided to this country, the Levittown Board of Education adopted a resolution during the March 12th public meeting to partially exempt property owned by veterans, as provided in the Real Property Tax Law (RPTL) 458-a signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Previously, only municipalities were permitted to allow this exemption. The exemption now applies to residential properties (Class 1), cooperative properties (Class 2) and Gold Star Parents – parents who lost a child during combat. According to the adopted resolution, the district will allow the maximum exemption provided under

RPTL 458-a. “The Board of Education was happy to grant this exemption to the many veterans in the Levittown community,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. James J. Grossane said. “We have never forgotten that Levittown was built for veterans, and we are pleased to acknowledge their service in this way.” According to William Pastore, the district’s assistant superintendent for business and finance, there are 837 non-combat veterans, 628 combat veterans and 97 veterans with service-connected disabilities living in the Levittown community. All of these veterans can now apply for property tax exemptions under RPTL 458-a. The average

household would realize an annual increase of $58.10 in their school and library tax bill. Broken into components, residents will annually pay $55.11 more for their school tax bill and $2.99 more for their library tax bill. Board President Kevin Regan explained that the approval of the Alternative Veterans Exemption is a wonderful effort on behalf of the Levittown community to show appreciation to the veterans who served and spent time away from home.“ Levittown was built as a community for veterans and we should be at the forefront in approving this veterans exemption, ” Mr. Regan said.

Horizons Day Happenings Learning continued past the regular school week hours for the Horizons Program students who attended Horizons Conference Day at Wantagh Elementary School. This annual enrichment day was an opportunity for students enrolled in the gifted and talented student program to partner with their parents while engaging in various hands-on activities. During the rigorous workshop offerings, the students and their parents were challenged to think and perform at a high level while exploring topics such as chromatography,

forensic anthropology, communication with codes and ciphers, egg drop engineering and recycled artistic design. “These engaging workshops provided a wonderful opportunity for students and their parents to explore new topics and share in their continuous love of learning,” said Horizons teacher Renee MacDermott. Experts in the field worked with students in the workshops. Engineer Thomas Fields taught the students the engineering behind a successful egg drop, while educator Lauren Shaw presented

ways to create and detect codes and ciphers. Educator Carrie Cohen taught the students how to think and behave like forensic scientists, and Hands on Science educator Susan Beltrani shared her many skeletons and encouraged the students to detect characteristics of animals based on their skeletal structures. Artistically inclined students had the opportunity to join Material for the Arts educator Gregory VandeHey in recycling bits and scraps from technology and fashion companies into “buckle bugs” art designs.

The senior class has worked with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to raise awareness and funds to benefit childhood cancer research. Their efforts are being made on behalf of Giuliana Geller, who is battling Undifferentiated Sarcoma. Giuliana is the daughter of Mrs. Jacqueline Geller, a social studies teacher at the school.

The Ronald McDonald House of New Hyde Park opened its doors to the National Junior Honor Society students from Wisdom Lane Middle School. The students collected six boxes of personal care items to donate. Upon dropping off the boxes, the students were treated to a tour of the Ronald McDonald House. They listened attentively to

the history and the purpose behind the organization and were surprised to learn about the $2 million cost to run the Long Island house annually. The students were told that although some money comes from the McDonald’s Corporation, most of the money comes from donations. In addition, they learned that the house has 42 rooms, 18 of which were just given a

complete makeover. Long Island designers donated their time and resources to redesign the rooms to feel like high-end hotel rooms. Student Scott McKinnon was impressed with how volunteers work 10 hours a day to help with the families in need. Many students also mentioned how they would like to volunteer their services, in addition to participating in the walk-a-thon in May.

JFK STUDENT OF THE QUARTER - Allison Siegler from John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore was named Student of the Quarter at Nassau BOCES’ Barry Tech. She was honored for her second quarter grades, attendance, work ethic and preparedness. Students of the Quarter also have taken the initiative on class projects and are role models for all students both at school and during internship assignments.

Top-Ranked Bowler

On February 8th, Levittown’s Division Avenue High School sophomore Brandon Soedarmasto and senior Chris Reilly competed in the Nassau County Bowling Individuals Tournament. Brandon was the tournament winner with a total pin count of 1,389, making him the topranked bowler in Nassau County. In addition, Chris finished the tournament ranking fourth with a total

pin count of 1,365. Both Chris and Brandon will go on to compete in the state tournament on March 2nd. During the February 11th Board of Education meeting, Brandon was honored as the county’s top-ranked bowler. Coach Brian Maloney congratulated Brandon on the season’s accomplishments and explained that his successes lie in “his ability to step up when the pressure

is on.” Division Avenue High School Principal Joan Lorelli stated that “consistency” was also another of Brandon’s great traits. During the bowling season, Brandon bowled a 236.3 average over the course of 36 games. The Levittown School District would like to congratulate Brandon on this accomplishment.

Daring To Be The Change Positive vibrations resonated through the halls of Wantagh High School as 270 sophomores and 75 faculty members participated in the threeday interactive Challenge Day Program. This six-and-a-half hour empathy and connectionbuilding venue is designed to motivate students to encourage others to show compassion and be the change they wish to see in the world, starting with themselves. The program focused on the sophomore class since they will be able

to sustain the program’s ideals for the next two years. The theme of the program was “Be the Change,” and the day began with icebreaker activities to help the students relax and leave their comfort zones. As the day progressed, the activities became more personal and addressed common high school issues including bullying, gossiping, apathy and stereotyping. Students and adults were encouraged to share their true feelings and to let

go of limiting beliefs. In addition, the students were given the tools of healthy self-expression, the ability to celebrate diversity and the ability to encourage a change in others. At the end of the program, the students were asked to share with the group the changes they are willing to make to “Be The Change.” “The program is very empowering and students leave with a strong desire to make a difference,” Principal Carolyn Breivogel said.

Game Farm To Open its 45th season, the Game Farm will be offering coupons on its Facebook page and website for $4.50 off a regular ticket price valid for the opening weekend. From domestic to exotic animals, the Long Island Game Farm has so much to offer, all while providing an outdoor educational experience. Unlike many other zoos, children get a

one-of-a-kind experience at the Game Farm, where they are encouraged to engage and feed countless animals by petting, holding, and bottle-feeding. There are even special areas within the farm, including popular “Bambiland,” where children get up close and personal with deer; and “Old MacDonald’s Farm,” where children get a glimpse of life on

an actual farm with pigs and chickens. For almost half a century, children have been leaving the Game Farm with acquired knowledge and a smile from ear to ear. Opening Day — Saturday, April 12th — coincides with the start of many Long Island schools’ spring break. The Game Farm will be open the entire break (ending on

April 20) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then, the Game Farm will reopen the next weekend, April 26th and 27th, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well. Youth Conservation Program Under Governor Cuomo’s Open for Fishing and Hunting initiative, a two-day, hands-on program on hunting safety will be offered on April 26th and 27th by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Sportsman Education Program, the agency announced today. “Hunting and fishing are an important part of Long Island’s heritage, and we are very fortunate that the region offers a multitude of diverse and rewarding recreational opportunities,” said DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. “The 2014 Youth Conservation Program is the perfect way to introduce the next

generation of sportsmen and women to hunting ethics and teach them how to be responsible hunters from the start. These youth education courses fit right in with Governor Cuomo’s Open for Fishing and Hunting initiative to expand hunting and fishing opportunities in New York State.” Since 1994 this event has been sponsored by the DEC’s Sportsman Education Program, the New York State Conservation Officers Association and the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club. The Youth Conservation Program will be held at the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club in Manorville. Each class is limited to 30 participants and

selections are made by a panel that reviews a 75-word application. Enrollment in the class is open to all youth between the ages of 12 and 16 who have not yet taken their Hunter Education course. To date approximately 800 students have successfully completed YCP on Long Island. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive their Hunter Education Training Certificate. This certificate is required in order to purchase a hunting license. NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative is an effort to improve recreational activities for sportsmen and sportswomen and to boost tourism opportunities throughout the state. This initiative includes the streamlining of fishing and hunting licensing and reducing license fees, improved access for fishing at various sites across the state and increasing hunting opportunities in various regions. This year, Governor Cuomo unveiled the NYS Adventure License, which allows outdoor enthusiasts, boaters, anglers and hunters to consolidate their recreation licenses and benefits onto their New York State Driver’s

License, and the NYS Adventure License Plates, featuring nine plate designs available for free to those buying new lifetime hunting, fishing or park licenses in 2014. In support of this initiative, this year Governor Cuomo has proposed creating 50 new land access projects to connect hunters, anglers, bird watchers and others who enjoy the outdoors to more than 380,000 acres of existing state and easement lands that have gone untapped until now. These 50 new access projects include building new boat launches, installing new hunting blinds and building new trails and parking areas. In Long Island this

includes projects at Rocky Point Natural Resource Management Area, Underhill Unique Area, Kings Park Unique Area and Otis Pike Preserve. In addition, the Governor’s 2014-2015 budget proposes to: include $4 million to repair the state’s fish hatcheries; limit the liability of landowners who allow recreational activities on their properties, which could open up vast, untapped resources for additional hunting, fishing and many other recreational pursuits; and allow crossbow hunting once again in New York State.
