This year’s Long Island Builder’s Institute Builders Expo will truly be a home show. The show, the only expo on Long Island that attracts the pros, this year will feature some of Long Island’s biggest homebuilders who will exhibit their newest projects – both for sale and rentals. The show takes place March 26th, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Hilton Long Island, 598 Broadhollow Rd., Melville. There’s a saying that goes, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” The goal, as I see it, is to capture as many of these moments as possible and preserve them in your memory. For me, this process is only enhanced by my love of photography. Sure, there’s something to be said for stepping back and simply observing the events before you, minus the ever-present haze of technology and gadgets galore. However, I feel

that photos help to string together the missing pieces, forming a minidocumentary of sorts of each of our lives. One of my favorite pursuits has always been capturing the perfect sunrise or sunset, that moment when all the colors burst forth in a radiant display of supernatural glory. It is easy to miss the beauty which surrounds us on a daily basis, so caught up are we in our own virtual worlds. Around every corner, there are lines and angles and reflections of light, which produce some of the most

brilliant visuals. Flowers, butterflies, candid shots of people in their element… open your eyes and you will see photo opps everywhere. Add to that the magic of Photoshop and Instagram, and the possibilities for manipulation of an ordinary photo into a masterpiece are endless. Of course, snap a truly spectacular shot and there may be #nofilterneeded! As we gingerly take our first steps into the Spring season, take a deep breath, look around and allow yourself to be moved. And make sure you have your camera handy.

Understanding The Circle Of Life

Last Sunday, as my family was gathering for spaghetti and meatballs, we received a phone call from my grandmother. She sounded noticeably different. We could tell that something was wrong because her voice was shaky, and she did not offer the usual pleasantries. After a few minutes of crying, she told us that her cat had passed away. She loved that cat for the twenty-something years that it was around, and during the last few days, she could sense that something was wrong. I anticipated that she would be inconsolable,

because she truly cared about her precious feline. We were devastated as well, until we got another call. It was my uncle. He had great news. His wife was pregnant and they were expecting a baby. We never expected him to have kids, even though he seemed to love them. It was a welcomed shock to us, and even more needed for my grandmother. She had lost a cat, but had also potentially gained a grandchild. It seemed as if this baby was coming to fill and exceed the gap left by the animal’s passing. Essentially, the point that I am trying to make

is that when everything seems to be going wrong, greatness fills the void. With every bad, comes some good. As was the case with my grandmother and her cat, new life is promising to replace the loss of a loved one. Even when it seems that everything is stacked against us, it is comforting to know that it will turn around. We can never dwell on the negative aspects of life, as around every corner is a surprise that has the potential to brighten our day. Life is a cycle of highs and lows, and we should always anticipate the next peak.

In an effort to prevent bullying through the promotion of compassion, kindness and understanding, Barnum Woods Elementary School in the East Meadow School District celebrated International Stand Up To Bullying Day on February 28th. The day also marked the launch of the school’s Bully Busters Program, an initiative to

combat bullying. Fifthgrader Giustina Gentile spearheaded the idea for the Bully Busters Program, as well as a Bully Buster T-shirt contest initiative. The school previously held a drawing contest from January 21st to February 3rd, and the winning submission was featured on the T-shirts, which were donated by Iavarone Bros. Fourth-grader Dylan Luciano was the winner

of the T-shirt contest, and on International Stand Up to Bullying Day, students and staff wore their Bully Buster T-shirts. Barnum Woods Elementary, along with Giustina and Dylan, received honorary citations from Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, who recognized the school’s and students’ efforts in standing up against bullying.

Pennies For Patients M e a d o w b r o o k Elementary School students in the East Meadow School District united for a worthy cause last month when they participated in the Pennies For Patients initiative, organized by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s School and Youth Programs. The character education and philanthropy program,

which ran from Feb. 3-28, provided students with a unique experience to make a difference through teamwork to help thousands of children fight blood cancers. Students received individual donation boxes, which they used to collect spare change, and they organized a specific theme related to the cause each Friday throughout the month.

In total, Meadowbrook Elementary collected $2,039.55 during its Pennies For Patients campaign. The top fundraiser was Ms. Cohen’s first-grade class, which collected $341.96. For their efforts, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will send the top class a $50 gift card.

Hoops For Heart Physical education teacher Eileen Keener said the students learn the lifelong health benefits of physical activity, the importance of heart health, and lessons about volunteering, helping others and leadership. “They are proud when they realize that what they are doing can help save lives in their own community,” Ms. Keener said. “Hoops for Heart is a great way to bring students together for a great cause, physical activity and community service.” During Wantagh Middle School’s 17-year participation in Hoops

for Heart, the school has raised more than $100,000 for the American Heart Association to fund medical research and educational programs to fight heart disease and stroke. Last year, Wantagh Middle School was the top fundraising school on Long Island. Hoops for Heart coordinator Larry Pyser said, “Thanks in part to the efforts of Wantagh Middle School, the money donated has helped lower heart disease by more than 15 percent in the last 10 years.”

In celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday and in concert with the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day, students and staff at Bellmore’s Winthrop Avenue School dropped everything and read on March 3rd. “We’re always looking for ways to inspire kids to read,” said Principal Sally Curto. “This year, our librarian Marjorie Falabella

coordinated the event and all of the students received bookmarks and pencils to remind them to read.” Mrs. Falabella added, “In the midst of all of the preparation for the state testing, it was a great opportunity for the students to take 30 minutes and read for fun.” To prepare for the day, students learned about Read Across America, Dr. Seuss, aka Theodore

Geisel, and other authors who were inspired to become writers because of Mr. Geisel. As a follow-up to that lesson, the students participated in an activity where they wrote who inspired them to become better readers. The brief paragraphs were put together to create a 5-foot version of the Cat in the Hat’s iconic red and white hat.
