ummit Lane Elementary School students in Levittown exceeded their goal of raising $4,000 for the American Heart Association and, as promised, gathered in the gymnasium to paint Principal Keith Squillacioti. This is the 15th year that Summit Lane has participated. Last year, the school raised $2,500 and set out to exceed that number by setting a goal of $4,000. Two hundred and twenty students collected $6,530, the school’s largest amount of donations.

Parade To Hit The Streets

The 19th Annual Rockville Centre St. Patrick’s Parade begins at 12 noon on Saturday, March 21st, starting from parking field 12 onto North Long Beach Road and proceeding to the reviewing stand in front of St. Agnes Cathedral. “What better way to come together as a community then a parade,” commented Mayor Francis X. Murray. “Its one of the most exciting days here in Rockville Centre. The downtown shops are booming, the streets are full of Rockville Centre pride and we are able to give back to three worthy causes.” This year’s Grand Marshal is Rockville Centre native Bob Williams. Bob has spent his life serving others with his unwavering dedication, commitment and willingness to get involved in this great community. Bob comes from a tradition of service to the Village, as his father was Deputy Mayor of Rockville Centre. Following law school, Bob served in the U.S. Army and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service. He began his legal career as

soccer. Mr. Williams was part of the parades initial organization committee and incorporated it as a New York State non-profit corporation in 1997. For many years thereafter he served on the Parade Committee as its legal counsel. Over the last 19 years, the Rockville Centre St. Patrick’s Parade has become one of the most successful and wellattended parades in New York State. It has become a source of not only cultural pride, but civic pride, as well. The parade is an incorporated not-for-profit organization that annually shares its success with three worthy charities, which are National, Irish and Rockville Centre focused. In the past 18 years, their tireless efforts to raise funds has supported and donated over $878,000 to 55 charities. The parade that “shares and cares” will benefit three worthy charities this year including the Katie McBride Foundation, the Hance Family Foundation, and Dublin Children’s Pilgrimage.

Islanders Score Big

There might have been some sad faces after a loss against the New York Rangers on Tuesday night – the final faceoff at Nassau Coliseum for both New York based National Hockey League teams – but the New York Islanders scored big smiles with patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on

Wednesday afternoon as three players visited the hospital. Leaving their skates and sticks at the rink, forward Eric Boulton (#36), defensemen Matt Donovan (#46), and defenseman Brian Strait (#37) delivered tee-shirts, beach towels, and hats to the patients and their families.

Over 40 patients, along with family members, received visits from the players. The threesome walked through the entire in-patient pediatric unit and the out-pediatric hemotology/oncology clinic at Stony Brook University Cancer Center.

Teen entrepreneurs from three local high schools earned the highest honors in the final round of the Long Island Virtual Enterprises (LI VE) Business Plan Competition and will advance to the nationals next month. Student business leaders from Bellmore-Merrick, Hewlett-Woodmere and Westhampton Beach won the top three spots at the American Portfolios Financial Services hosted event and now move on to compete at the National Business Plan Competition in New York City. The LI VE is a collaborative effort that includes Nassau BOCES, Eastern Suffolk BOCES, Western Suffolk BOCES and the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Technical Assistance Center of New York. Each high school class was represented by a student team in the form of a business. Merrick-Bellmore’s John F. Kennedy High School took first place with their company On the Move. Coming in second was the Hewlett High School

enterprise FlashComm. Rounding out the trifecta, in third place, was the Westhampton Beach High School business Helios. “Congratulations to everyone who participated. HOW TO BE A HERO

She lives about thirty to forty-five minutes away from me. We didn’t go to the same school, nor have any mutual friends. We met through our parents. I never knew how close I could grow to someone who lived so far. We can talk for hours. Well, when talking for hours, you run out of things to say. When I asked how school was, I knew it was the worst and best thing I could ask. She admitted she constantly felt uncomfortable in school. She was jealous of all her peers’ happiness. Her parents were fighting a lot, she was bullied, and there was also the secret. This secret was one I knew for a long time and promised to keep to this day. Let’s just say it got to her. She became depressed and cut herself. I, being the friend I am, did what

I needed to do. I told. I told my mom to tell her mom to get her to a therapist. What I didn’t do is tell her secret. I never break my promises. I just told her she was getting bullied and cutting. But this, to any parent, is traumatizing. Long story short, it took three years, but I got her through it. But what does this have to do with heroes? Well, now I consider myself a hero. So does my friend. I’ll never forget the day I got the text: thanks for saving my life. Not to be selfish, but what I did took guts and time. I selflessly got my friend through, by far, the roughest time of her life. I think I am a hero. What I’m trying to say is that even the stupidest thing can keep someone from self-harm. Even the happiest of people go through depression. Please be kind to others, and be a hero by simply listening.

Five members of the Islanders team visited the children in the various pediatric units of the Nassau University Medical Center. They were welcomed by Dr. Politi and hospital officials, who took them to the various floors

and introduced them to children in the emergency room, on the 18th floor and in the pediatric outpatient practices. The children, who are big fans of the Islanders, were thrilled to have the players visit them and bring some

cheer during their hospital stay. The players who signed autographs and gifted the children with T-shirts, blankets and Islanders cups were: Ryan Strome, Josh Bailey, Nick Leddy, Thomas Hickey and Brock Nelson.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a hero? I know I have. Wouldn’t it be cool to run into a burning building to save a little baby or catch the criminal? We all know the definition of a hero: A courageous person who helps others without thinking of him or herself or the consequences that may follow. Also, everyone under the sun knows heroes are brave, selfless, caring, etc. But, have you ever thought maybe that’s just not enough? How can something so incredibly important to society have such a short definition and description? That’s because it’s wrong. A hero is an ordinary person who can and will go out of his or her way to help, care and solve people’s problems .... basically, anyone. I bet at least one, if not every teacher you had, told you to be kind to one another, and that you never know what someone else is

Islanders. Celebrating Child Life Awareness Month, the program has been sponsoring daily activities and visits which highlight what the Child Life Specialists do every day -- provide therapeutic, educational, and recreational activities to meet the unique emotional

and developmental needs of hospitalized children. These activities include medical play therapy, games, arts and crafts, as well as specialized programs such as animal assisted therapy, music therapy, and birthday and holiday parties.

National Champs Nassau Community College is proud to announce that its men’s wrestling team has won the 2015 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championship. The title marks the seventh time the Lions have taken home the title. Prof. Paul Schmidt, the team’s coach, gives high marks to both his fellow coaches and the members of his team. “I’m very proud of the way the guys were able to manage such a vigorous schedule by doing their school work, working and wrestling practice. This was a true team effort led by my

dedicated coaches Vougar Oroudjov, Mac Maldarelli and Sam Thomas. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to help young men at Nassau Community College,” he said. During the tournament, first-year student Joseph Russ (Smithtown) became the 12th NCC wrestler to win an individual national championship. He beat the number one ranked wrestler Mizam Tamaradze from Springfield Tech Community College in the finals. The Lions also had two wrestlers earn AllAmerican honors, Mark West (Hauppauge) and Gio Santiago (Holbrook). In addition, Josh

Antione (Williamsburg, Brooklyn), Tom McLoughlin (Maspeth), Sam Schwartzapfel (Long Beach), Deuly Espinal (Williamsburg, Brooklyn), Zack Small (East Islip) and Jenard Rosemond (North Merrick) each won valuable points which helped the College win the overall team title. Five wrestlers, Josh Antoine, Deuly Espinal, Dominic Holder (Hauppauge), Tom McLoughlin and Dan Weiss (Merrick), were named to the Coaches All-Academic Team. Coach Schmidt was named the NJCAA National Coach of the Year.

The Nassau Community College Women’s Basketball team has won the 2015 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XV championship. Coached by Kristine Abrams, the Lady Lions defeated Sullivan Community College to win the title. Second-year student guard Mo Jones (Freeport) was named the tournament MVP for her outstanding play, while first-year forward

Jayda Hyatt (Uniondale) was named to the AllTournament team. “In the beginning of the season we knew we had talent, so we set the goal of having a championship season. We also knew it would take self-discipline and a lot of hard work. We lost a few games towards the end of the season, but these ladies were set on focusing on our larger goal of a winning a regional championship,” said Coach Abrams. “When we entered

post-season I could tell they were very prepared, and it showed in the quarters, semis and finals. I’m proud of how hard they worked and I look forward to coaching them at the NJCAA Tournament.” Coach Abrams was named Region XV (Division III) Coach of the Year. The Lady Lions now advance to the 2015 NJCAA National Championship, set to be held March 12th through 14th in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

I settled into somewhat of a routine, using the classes to de-stress and unwind. Then came the winter, that vast, endless stretch of bitter cold, spurring the urge to hibernate until the first flowers decided to bloom. Unfortunately, stress doesn’t wait until spring, and so, come March, back to yoga I went. The first few weeks were a bit rough, what with the creaking bones and stiff muscles and, well, just a general laziness and lack of motivation. But, like magic, after getting back into a bit of a routine, there it was – that old familiar feeling of inner peace. For a few minutes anyway.

The key, I suppose, it to find a way to bottle that feeling and be able to call upon it when needed, to apply it to the world beyond my yoga mat. Perhaps that comes with practice. More practice than the once-aweek, sporadic schedule I have assembled for myself. One can only assume. One day at a time. One class at a time. One deep breath at a time. That’s all any of us can focus on in our infinite quest to find that deep, soul-searching sense of meaning to it all. No stress, no judgment, no pressure. Just you, alone with your thoughts. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat.

Set To Compete Wantagh Middle School eighth-grader William Hostetter has qualified to compete in the New York State level of the National Geographic Bee, which will be held at the New York State Museum’s Cultural Education Center on Friday, March 27th. A two-time school winner, William took an exam for a chance to participate in the state

finals after the school-level competition in February. Under the direction of social studies teacher David Cippoletti and Supervisor of Social Studies Christopher Widmann, competitors were tested in a challenging 15-round contest on their knowledge of U.S. cities, historic places, continents and U.S. and world geography. The National Geographic

Bee is not only designed to review and test students’ knowledge of world geography, but to also motivate student knowledge of countries and continents and their history. The district congratulates William on this academic achievement and wishes him the best of luck in his advancement in the competition.

Paying Tribute Forest Lake Elementary School students in Wantagh celebrated the birthday of popular author Dr. Seuss by reading his books and participating in a myriad of interdisciplinary

activities on March 2nd. In Christine Torrellas’s class, the students read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and The Lorax. After discussing the characters and the

methods Dr. Seuss used in his literature, they made Lorax mustaches and Lorax planters with grass seed that will grow to appear like hair. The students also made Lorax cookies.
