Dear Governor Hochul and Members of the New York State Senate and Assembly,

investment; it’s clear that that tactic is no longer successful, and the state needs to put its money where its mouth is.

As businesses, we were gratiﬁed when New York State passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) in 2019. The CLCPA provides a road map for our state to reach a renewable energy economy, which will not only combat the devastation and unpredictability of the climate crisis but will lead to greater economic opportunity for New Yorkers as the state creates green jobs and invests in frontline communities.

Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more eﬃcient, and increase resilience to climate change. A signiﬁcant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.

In recent years, however, we’ve become concerned that the CLCPA has not been funded. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. By allowing the law to remain an unfunded mandate, Albany will create an unstable situation for businesses and leave significant economic benefits on the table. This is why we strongly encourage you to allocate, at minimum, $15 billion in climate, jobs, and justice funding in this year’s New York State budget. These funds will benefit businesses and the communities which we serve in a multitude of ways: Creating jobs and increasing spending power: Investing $15 billion yearly in climate, jobs, and justice will create and sustain 150,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade. Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building efficiency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. This is good for New Yorkers, and it’s good for business. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy specifically, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York. Stable investments in building a renewable energy economy: Under the CLCPA, New York must run on 100% renewable electricity by 2040, and our entire economy must be carbon-neutral by 2050. We have made pitiful progress: just 31% of our electric generation comes from renewable sources, and since 2019, we have reduced our economy-wide emissions by only 6%. Moreover, New York currently sends over $30 billion out of state every year to purchase fossil fuels. This lack of progress is concerning for businesses: we want to be able to count on a consistent energy transition along with — or faster than — the timeline outlined in the CLCPA. We need to know that the laws of our state will be followed. New York has had three years to try to meet its own timelines without significantly increasing financial

Putting money back into the pockets of working New Yorkers: Included in this $15 billion investment are direct grants, vouchers, and cash payments to working New Yorkers, increasing their spending power and creating breathing room for families. These funds include: grants to homeowners to make their buildings more energy-eﬃcient (for example, through weatherization or installing heat pumps), transit vouchers for NYC residents and other residents of urban areas to encourage the use of subway and bus ridership, and LIHEAP credits to lessen the cost of heat during cold winter months. These payments will ensure working New Yorkers will have more spending power and more breathing room, which is good for business and good for our state. It’s clear that this $15 billion investment makes good business sense for New York. We strongly encourage the governor and legislature to include this funding in this year’s New York State budget.

YES Community Counseling Center (YES CCC) is a local non-proﬁt organization with a mission to increase awareness about personal and community issues, prevent and treat substance abuse and to promote healthy families and a safe community.

YES Community Counseling Center has what they call a PACT (Partnering In Action and Change For Tomorrow) Initiative, which addresses our nation’s top substance abuse prevention priorities among persons aged 9-20 – underage drinking, marijuana, and opioid use. PACT seeks to understand patterns of youth and young adult underage drinking and substance use and implement targeted evidence based programs, policies, trainings, and education. Through community collaboration, they provide datadriven strategies and educational outreach to strengthen our communities’ prevention capacity to change the conditions by which youth and young adult substance use exists. PACT is comprised of ﬁve communities and school districts

(Farmingdale, Island Trees, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainedge) and collaborates with Farmingdale Alcohol Drug Abuse and Prevention Team (ADAPT), Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC), and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC). They also partner with the Long Island Prevention Resource Center (LIPRC), Nassau County Police Department, and New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force. Those entities work together to prevent the onset and progression of alcohol and substance use among youth and young adults aged 9-20. Prevention begins when communities’ health problems are understood within their environment; only then can YES CCC effectively plan and implement strategic action. The PACT Initiative uses the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to identify and select comprehensive, data-driven strategies to develop community solutions. The SPF is a 5-step planning process that guides the selection, implementation and evaluation of effective, culturally appropriate and sustainable prevention activities. Patrick J. Ryder was named Commissioner of the Nassau County Police Department in February 2018. He has spent 38 years in law enforcement, serving the last 36 years with the Nassau County Police Department. Commissioner Ryder began his law enforcement career with the New York Police Department in January 4, 1984. He joined the NCPD on July 18, 1986 and was assigned to the 3rd Precinct and in 1989 assigned to the Bureau of Special Operations. Promoted to Sergeant in 1995 and assigned to the 5th Precinct, 8th Squad, and the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) as the Deputy Commanding Officer. In 2008 he was designated the Commanding Officer of AFU, where he proactively implemented a number of life-saving programs and initiatives that helped ensure officer and public safety. These include the NCPD’s Real-Time Intelligence (RTI) system; the R.E.A.C.H. Program; the Civilian Intelligence Analyst Program; the DNA Collection Initiative; and the creation of the Counter-Terrorism Unit, Think Tank, and the Department’s Criminal Intelligence Rapid Response Team (CIRRT). Together these initiatives have brought crime in Nassau County to historic lows, allowing residents to enjoy one of the lowest crime rates in the United States. Commissioner Ryder has a Master’s Degree in Homeland Security and Management from Long Island University. He is an Adjunct Professor of Criminal Justice and Intelligence-Led Policing at Nassau Community College and taught at Dowling College until 2015. He currently sits on the Advisory Board for Criminal Justice at SUNY Farmingdale and has been a Counter-Terrorism Lecturer at the University of Maryland Center for Health and Homeland Security. Commissioner Ryder is a New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services-Certified Law Enforcement Instructor, a New York State Certified Crime and Intelligence Analyst, a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist, and has Top Secret clearance with the FBI’s New York Field Office. He has also been deputized as an IRS Criminal Investigator. Additionally, he has trained members of law enforcement agencies from Egypt, Tajikistan, Tunisia, South Africa, and Turkey. He and his wife Jill have three children: Liam, Sean, and Meghan.

Wantagh High School Writer Is Golden Nora Toscano is only a junior in high school, but she can already call herself an awardwinning writer. The Wantagh High School student was recently recognized with a Gold Key award in the Scholastic Arts and Writing competition. The winning piece was her short story, “Young Adult,” about a girl who comes from a family with a history on mental illness and the impact it has on her. Nora does a lot of writing beyond her school assignments, and “Young Adult” was a story she wrote on her own. She submitted it to the Scholastic Arts contest with the help of her 10th grade English teacher and newspaper adviser Kathleen Flynn. “It’s really satisfying to win this award,” Nora said. “Creative writing is so important to me. It’s something I am very passionate about.” Nora received honorable mention in last year’s contest, so this year’s Gold Key award represents her progression as a writer. She now advances in the competition and will compete for a National Medalist prize.

Fun Ways For Children To Participate In St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations St. Patrick’s Day commemorates its namesake, the patron saint of Ireland who helped spread Christianity across this island nation. While it may have begun as a religious holiday, eventually the fanfare expanded to transform St. Patrick’s Day into a secular celebration spanning the world — reaching Irish diaspora in various countries. In fact, some of the largest St. Patrick’s Day events occur outside of Ireland. It’s common to find people raising pints throughout the day on St. Patrick’s Day. However, for those who want children to be a part of the festivities, there are plenty of entertaining ways to incorporate them into any celebration. Teacher Turned Author Shares Her Craft

Former Wantagh Elementary School teacher Karen Kerge couldn’t stay away for too long. After retiring in June following a 33-year career as an educator, she returned as a published author for a series of assemblies. Following her retirement, Ms. Kerge wrote “Betsy the Diva Dog” about her 11-year-old canine companion. As a teacher, she captivated her students with tales of Betsy and decided it would make a great book. The theme of the story is that everyone is unique and has their own

special talents. In meeting with each grade, Ms. Kerge spoke about the writing process and coming up with ideas for stories. Creating the book stemmed from her desire to still make a positive difference for children in her postteaching career. Ms. Kerge noted that publishing a book requires collaboration, discussing how she worked with an illustrator to bring her words to life. She also emphasized to her young audience that reading and writing are interconnected.

At the end of her book is a writing prompt for children based on their own personal experiences. Ms. Kerge taught fourth grade at Wantagh Elementary School for 25 years, then moved to kindergarten for her last eight years. Many students were delighted to see their first ever teacher in Wantagh. “This is definitely a walk down memory lane,” Ms. Kerge said. “It’s thrilling to be able to come back to a school I loved.”

Choking is common, yet most people don't give it a thought. The most important thing we can do is be prepared and know what to do if someone is choking. When someone is choking, their brain is

not getting the oxygen needed. Within merely four to six minutes without oxygen, the brain will begin dying. Meanwhile, the average emergency medical response time is eight minutes in most areas, while 14 minutes in rural areas. It's crucial to know what to do without waiting for emergency medical help. • Know the signs of choking. When someone is choking, they cannot breathe because the object is blocking their airway. They may not be able to breathe or talk at all or may only be able to do so partially. They may make wheezing or rattling sounds and seem to be in distress. If the person choking knows the international sign, they may put one or both hands over their neck to indicate to others that something is stuck. • Share the knowledge with others. Everyone

needs to know how to reduce choking risks and what to do if someone is choking. The information should be shared with all family members, teachers, lunchroom workers, restaurant staff, etc. The more people who know what to do, the more we can reduce the number of deaths due to choking. Principal Dr. Stephanie Scolieri said more than two dozen teachers and pupil personnel services professionals were trained to lead the sessions. During the sessions in February, which totaled about three hours, students were empowered to love themselves. Girls looked inside to recognize their strengths and identify the attributes that make them beautiful. “The purpose of Beautiful Me is to get the girls to appreciate who they are,” said Dr. Scolieri, who first brought the program to the school several years

ago. “Everyone should be proud of who they are, and that’s the point.” Girls learned about the importance of self-care and productive conflict resolution strategies. The sessions were about building each other up, and studwents filled each other’s heart-shaped boxes with compliments. As a gift from the foundation, each participant received a necklace with three interlocking hearts, in honor of the three girls. Dr. Scolieri said that Beautiful Me sessions will be held later in the year for seventh grade girls. How St. Patrick’s Day Is Celebrated In Ireland

Initially a religious holiday to commemorate the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day has since evolved into a global celebration of Irish culture. In fact, it has become one of the most popular days of the year to throw a party and gather with others. So how do people in Ireland — the heart of where St. Patrick’s Day originated — celebrate each March 17th? Should travelers find themselves in Ireland this time of year, here’s what to expect in terms of St. Patrick’s Day commemorations. Since St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday, expect schools, banks and some businesses to be closed around the country and in portions of Northern Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day tourism is big business, so restaurants and pubs likely will be open and may extend their hours. According to the vacationing resource Travel Awaits, more than 100,000 travelers visit Dublin from March 14 to March 18 to partake in St. Patrick’s Day festivities. COVID-19

likely will impact how many visit this year. As St. Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday, devout Irish Catholics will treat the day as a religious celebration and may attend mass at nearby churches. Even though St. Patrick’s Day falls during the solemn season of Lent, since St. Patrick’s Day 2022 falls on a Thursday this year, one does not need to worry about any Lenten fasting restrictions. However, abstaining from meat usually is put on pause when St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Lenten Friday anyway. The biggest St. Patrick’s Day parade takes place in Dublin, and it’s full of national

pride. Additional smaller parades may be held across Ireland as well. Travelers may experience “drowning the shamrock” as they visit Irish pubs on St. Patrick’s Day. It is traditional to drop a shamrock into customers’ drinks in the pub. As such, it is surmised that having many drinks undoubtedly means more good luck for the year ahead due to all those lucky shamrocks. It’s common to come across religious rituals, pilgrimages and processions on St. Patrick’s Day, particularly to places associated with St. Patrick. Downpatrick in County Down is believed to be the final resting place of St. Patrick and many people visit the grave and cathedral there. Some also may want to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. Ireland celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in similar fashion as other countries, but the country offers unique takes on the festivities as well.

Organize And Promote Traditional Seisiún

Traditional Irish music can enhance any St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Restaurants and pubs opening their doors for events during the month of March, and especially on March 17th, may want to coordinate seisiún at their establishments for extra ambiance and flair. Seisiún is the Gaelic word for “session.” It refers to a mostly informal “jam session” at which people play traditional Irish music. Seisiún generally are unrehearsed gatherings of musicians that happen mostly in pubs. Seisiún may seem as if musicians are part of bands, but this is not necessarily so. Even if

gatherings come together fluidly, pub and restaurant owners can facilitate the process. Here are some tips to make it happen. • Plan for and post regular seisiún schedules on your website. A regular seisiún can occur every Saturday evening and also on St. Patrick’s Day. • Reach out via social media to Irish musicians and encourage them to attend sessions at your business. • Quiet crowds when musicians decide to perform impromptu, even when gatherings fall outside of regularly scheduled seisiún. • Keep songbooks

available for patrons who want to join in. While many musicians or novice singers may be familiar with certain tunes, they may not know them all. Having lyrics and music available helps include many others in the fun. • Share news of seisiún at other pubs and establishments and they may do the same for yours. This way music lovers can enjoy music many nights of the week. A great seisiún makes people happy and fills their minds and hearts with wonderful music for some time. This is a great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and beyond.

Students certainly know how to give it their all at Mandalay Elementary School in the Wantagh School District. Principal Marie Pisicchio presented perseverance awards to 28 children. Ms. Pisicchio explained that the awards are presented annually to students who never quit and give

“110 percent.” Each classroom, special area and supportive service teacher selected a student who has best demonstrated perseverance during the first half of the 2021-22 school year. “It’s not necessarily about outcomes,” said Ms. Pisicchio, who also selects a student. “It’s

about the amount of effort that they put in.” Students were recognized during the morning announcements and invited to the lobby where they were presented with their certificates. The perseverance awards read, “When things yet tough, you

Business Students Make Their Pitch Eighth graders in the Business Management class at Wantagh Middle School recently participated in the Shark Tank Challenge. Business education teacher Nancy O’Connor said that students had to come up with a business name, concept, logo, slogan, commercial and website. The young entrepreneurs also had to complete industry, financial, competitive and SWOT analyses. Students pitched their businesses virtually to a panel of judges. Participating through Google Meet and evaluating each team’s business plan were Jeffrey Memisha of Realty Advisors, Cathy Powell of the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce and Lorraine Englander and Linda Furey of Junior Achievement. The first place winners were Danny Donahue and Luca Valentino for their business, Taste of Success. Two Community Members Appointed To YES Community Counseling Center Board Of Directors

YES is proud to announce that Ms. Davina Roberts and Ms. Francesca Zeltmann have joined the Board of Directors of YES Community Counseling Center. “We are extraordinarily excited about the additions of Ms. Roberts and Ms. Zeltmann to YES’ Board of Directors. They will be joining a talented and dedicated group of community members who understand how important it is to take care of their corner of the world,” stated Adrienne LoPresti, YES Executive Director. Davina Roberts is a Massapequa native and is thrilled to join the board at YES. Davina has always had a passion for serving her community and is excited to work alongside a group of professionals who have a wealth of knowledge and experience. Davina has a background in marketing and currently works at BioIVT serving as their marketing coordinator. Prior to that, Davina worked as the Digital Marketing Manager at IC Summits, where she led online initiatives. Davina has a passion for serving her community and lending a helping hand wherever possible. YES is an organization that embodies this notion, and this was a driving factor that led Davina to want to join the board. Previously, Davina has been involved with non-profit work in

Francesca Zeltmann is an attorney living in Massapequa. She has over 16 years experience handling disability cases. A graduate of Widener University School of Law, she was admitted to practice before the New York Second Judicial Department in 2005 and represented disability claims before the Social Security Agency tribunal. In 2010, she pursued advocacy of disability cases at the appellate level and gained admission to practice before the New York Eastern and

Southern Districts of New York. She continued her work litigating disability cases at the Administrative and Appellate level. In 2017, she was admitted to practice before the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Ms. Zeltmann also represents veterans in service-connected disability matters. In 2014, she became an accredited attorney, admitted to practice before the US Veterans Administration. In 2017, she was admitted to practice before the US Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. Francesca has been a resident of Massapequa for 17 years and is active in the community. She has been a member of the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce since 2017 and a member of the Friends of Massapequa Library.

The Spring Equinox The official beginning of spring is a highly anticipated day among people who can’t wait to put away their winter coats and soak up some warm sunlight, but the day of the spring equinox is just as worthy of celebration for its uniqueness as it is for its symbolic connection with the end of winter. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, on the spring equinox, which is sometimes referred

to as the “vernal equinox” or the “March equinox,” the sun crosses the celestial equator going south to north. Equinoxes (there’s another one in September each year) are the only two times a year that the sun rises due east and sets due west for everyone on Earth. As the sun passes overhead on the equinox, the tilt of Earth is zero relative to the sun. That means that

the planet’s axis neither points toward or away from the sun. Though it’s understandable why so many people appreciate the spring equinox, which ushers in increasing sunlight hours and later sunsets, the day’s uniqueness makes it even more worthy of celebration. This year the spring equinox happens on 11:33 AM on Sunday, March 20 in the northern hemisphere.

Division Avenue Science Olympiad Makes Team History The Division Avenue High School Science Olympiad team in the Levittown Public School District earned their best score ever with 97 points at the Nassau East Regional, earning them third place and their 14th consecutive trip to the State Finals. Led by President Matthew Chiu, the Science Olympiad team earned medals in 20 out of 23 events, including first place in Bridge by Gary Nepravishta and Grace Lim, Gravity Vehicle by Chris Powers and Simar Parmar and Ping Pong Parachute by Nabiha Khan and Izma Akbar. All 15 students on the team earned a medal in at least one event, a first for the Division team. “Science Olympiad is a lot more than a competition, it’s a lot of team building and

camaraderie,” Matthew said. “It’s definitely a lot of work, but it really pays off in the end.” “I used to play basketball but it’s as if this is my winter sport now,” Simar said. “We stay late every day to work on events – we’re always together as a team.” Leading up to the Nassau East Regional Tournament the students prepared by competing in the Pennsylvania, Ohio State University, Cornell University, and Princeton University Satellite Tournaments. The team will travel to Le Moyne College in Syracuse on March 18 to compete against 60 teams to determine the Top 10 in New York State for each event and a chance to represent New York at the National Tournament.
