The Family Project is a program that has been part of the Bellmore-Merrick community for the past 40 years. Many people with developmental disabilities do not have the same opportunities to socialize and build independent recreational skills as people who are neuro-typical in their development. The Family Project Program, founded and coordinated by Steve Rose,

The Community Parent Center, the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District, Senator Michael Venditto, Assemblyman David McDonough, Legislator Norma Gonsalves, Legislator Steve Rhoads, Bellmore UFSD, N. Bellmore UFSD, Merrick UFSD and N. Merrick UFSD are hosting a Naloxone Training (Narcan) for parents, families and community members on Thursday, March 31st, at 7 p.m. in the Boardroom of the Brookside School, 1260 Meadowbrook Road, North Merrick. The training is presented by New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS). Naloxone is a lifesaving drug that can revive overdose victims. Its brand name is Narcan.

Naloxone (Narcan) helps restore breathing to a person who is overdosing from opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription drugs such as oxycontin, oxycodone and fentanyl. It works quickly and gives emergency responders time to get the person to a hospital. Naloxone training participants will learn how to administer the lifesaving antidote which can reverse the fatal effects of an opioid overdose; and receive a free Narcan kit. New York State and Nassau County have been working to raise public awareness about this lifesaving tool, offering free trainings, and increasing the availability of Narcan kits. Anyone over the age 18 can be trained with a simple and informative 90-minute lesson and a free life-saving kit. The Community Parent

It finally arrived, my very own upgraded home, complete with a filter, a light, a brand new silk plant, pretty gravel…everything a betta as particular as myself could possibly ask for! While not exactly a birthday present (I spied my Human hiding it under the Christmas tree a few months back), I had the pleasure of moving in just a couple weeks ago after my “one-year-in-the-bowl” festivities. I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive once I saw the setup; nothing like my tiny travel bowl, which was perfect for joining my Human and her family at the dining room table for dinner or on the coffee table for prime television viewing. No, this one-gallon estate is much better suited for its stationary spot on the kitchen counter – although I hear it can be unplugged and

relocated easily enough, you know, in case there happens to be anything good on Animal Planet. And my plant, I can’t say enough about its lengthy silk leaves, which create the perfect spot to curl up on and nap at any time of the day or night. No more frayed fins for this betta! This plant is smooth sailing, allowing me to flit to and fro and wedge myself in between its fronds without doing any further damage to my lovely physique. These days, the Human tends to feed me twice a day, once before she leaves for work in the morning and again when she returns home in the evening – just a few flakes each time (I do have to maintain my figure after all). I am having a bit of trouble navigating around the filter though, as it tends to blow my precious meal clear across the tank just as I have it within my grasp. What a workout!

I suppose that explains why I’ve been napping quite a bit more lately, either on my favorite leaf or wedged in the corner of my tank, face pressed against the glass, floating above the gravel. Plus, this new light is great for exploring when I’m home alone, doing my daily laps and combing the bottom for any rogue flakes that may have escaped – exhausting stuff. When the Human says “lights out,” she means it. Bedtime for Buddy! I look forward to spending the next chapter of my life in this beautiful new environment. Thanks to those readers who continue to check in on my livelihood and compliment my columns. I’ve even been told a book deal should be forthcoming! Merrick celebrates Family Project’s 40th year. As the founder of the Family Project in 1975, Rose started working with a small group of students and volunteers on the front lawn of Grand Avenue Middle School. As time marched on, so did the program, which grew in size to reach dozens of student volunteers each year and 30-50 regular participants. “Steve Rose retired as social worker from BellmoreMerrick in 2012, but has tirelessly continued his life’s work dedicated to working with people with disabilities through Family Project and several other local agencies,” said Eric Arlin, director of special education and pupil personnel services. “It is with tremendous gratitude for your 40 years of leadership, commitment and caring about the people of Bellmore-Merrick that BMCHSD Board of Education honors you for your work on the Family Project,” added board vice president Janet Goller.

SCOUT WEEKEND - Packs 189 and 96 of Wantagh sent 92 people for Scout Weekend at Frost Valley YMCA, located in the Catskill mountains. These first through fifth graders and their families had to be split between two lodges. Frost Valley had a full schedule of events to choose from throughout the day, including sports, skills and hobbies, fulfilling some of the scouting requirements. Evenings were spent around the fireplace in the great room at the lodge. The weather was excellent and everyone enjoyed a weekend away, outside the reach of cellular phone service.

Scholarship Available The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or postgraduate students who are studying journalism, marketing/ communication, or healthcare administration. (The scholarship is not for

clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The scholarship is administered by the Hospital Council’s

Gathering as One In the East Meadow School District, Woodland Middle School achieved first place in Island Harvest’s Students Feeding Students Challenge. Across Long Island, 18 middle schools and high schools participated in this challenge to donate food, water and other basic necessities to families in need. Among the competition, Woodland donated 3,658 pounds of food and water through their sixth-grade food drive

and seventh-grade “Water Walk,” awarding them first place. To honor their tremendous donation, Island Harvest CEO and Woodland Middle School alumna Randi Shubin Dresner awarded teachers, students and the school a trophy and certificate of appreciation on March 3rd for providing 1,000 meals to families on Long Island. In addition, sixth-grader Natalie Hernandez received a certificate of recognition

for donating the most food as a student. “As a prior student of Woodland and current East Meadow resident, I am extremely proud,” Randi said as she acknowledged the school’s contribution. “Programs like what you have done and will continue to do will make a difference in the lives of others. Your contributions helped children and families struggling with hunger on Long Island.”

Happy Heart, Happy Mind In the Merrick School District, Chatterton School students participated in the American Heart Association’s American Heart Month program to support cardiovascular research and education. On March 7th, students

exercised their heart muscles for 45 minutes by jumping rope, playing basketball and hula hooping with their friends. During the entire month, students in grades K-6 will learn about the importance of nutrition, fitness and

developing heart-healthy habits. In addition, the school hopes to surpass last year’s donation of $3,803 and raise $4,000 to help children and families fighting these battles.

On February 26th, students, teachers and community members from schools across the district came together at Calhoun High School to share their original pieces of poetry, fiction and non-fiction in the first ever BellmoreMerrick Writer’s Festival. Calhoun senior Josh Aberman developed the idea to combine a celebration of the written word with a charitable cause. This led to the creation of the districtwide event, which raised more than $600 for the nonprofit organization Economic Policy Institute and enabled 23 students and five staff members

to recite their creative writing. The EPI’s mission seeks to include the needs of low- and middle-income workers in economic policy discussions. “The festival is a great opportunity for writers of all ages to share their talents and celebrate their individual voices,” said Catherine Arresto, an English teacher at Merrick Avenue Middle School and Calhoun High School. In this format, she said that writers could express themselves creatively and freely while also supporting a worthy cause. English chair members Adeline Atkins, Mary

Donnelly and Kim Serpe organized and facilitated the event. Dr. Linda Opyr, former Nassau County Poet Laureate, kicked off the night with an explosively powerful keynote speech interwoven with her poetry while Josh Aberman acted as the emcee for the evening, closing the festival with a reading of his original poem, “It’s 8:30.” The district is proud to celebrate the creative minds and spirits of some of its most talented students and staff and is looking forward to establishing the festival as a BellmoreMerrick tradition.

Reading Worldwide In the Merrick School District, Norman J. Levy Lakeside School students celebrated World Read Aloud Day by partnering with their fellow classmates to take action on behalf of the 793 million people worldwide who cannot

Focus on Wellness A fit and active lifestyle was on the minds of Shore Road School students in Bellmore during the school’s annual Health and Safety/Wellness Week. On Mileage Monday, the students and staff accessorized with pedometers and tried to collectively take 3.4 million

“Cyber Safety: Dangers of Cyber-bullying, Social Media and Internet Safety,” a parent targeted program, is presented by the Community Parent Center and the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District on Tuesday, March 29th, at 7:30 p.m., at the Brookside School, 1260 Meadowbrook Road in North Merrick. The program, addressing the issues of cyberbullying, social media and online exploitation, will be presented by Special Agent Danielle Messineo, Federal Bureau of InvestigationLong Island Office. Bullying and cyberbullying are two of the biggest problems in schools across our country today. Over 3.2 million students are victims of

bullying each year. Nearly 43 percent of kids have been bullied online while 1 in 5 teens admit to sending suggestive photos/videos to their peers. Ninety-five percent of teens use the Internet daily. Learn what can happen when your kid’s impulses meet powerful technology. Sending Wishes In the East Meadow School District, Parkway Elementary School kindergarten and firstgraders celebrated popular children’s author Dr. Seuss’ 112th birthday with a weeklong celebration. Beginning February 29th, students created their own “Cat in the

Hat” caps, decorated the hallways with pictures of Dr. Seuss characters such as “Cat,” “Thing 1,” “Thing 2” and “Horton,” and were inspired to wear crazy socks and mismatched clothing to go along with “Fox in Socks” and “Wacky Wednesday.” Later that week, students

Student entries are selected by art educators and are limited to a maximum of three pieces of artwork from each teacher. This year, more than 400 art educators from more than 200 schools in 50 Nassau County school

Grand Avenue Middle School Art Club students had an enlightening experience painting at ArtSea, a private art studio in Babylon where they created beautiful acrylic paintings on canvas. Nicholas Giordano and Barbara Hirten, coadvisers of the Art Club, accompanied the students

on their art adventure. The studio’s instructor, kept the them engaged and excited to learn new skills throughout the workshop. The students discovered the challenges and pleasures of painting as they produced a finished piece of art to take home. “I was amazed at the quality of the work,” said
