In recognition of National Nutrition Month, Mandalay Elementary School students in Wantagh are taking a closer look at what they are eating during lunch. During March, the school goal is for students to become more mindful when choosing food items, to incorporate more lean

proteins, whole grains and vegetables and to limit sugars and processed foods. To kick off the program, PTA Co-President Sharon George, who is also a clinical dietician, held an assembly, which reviewed food values in one of three categories similar to a stoplight. This simplistic

method encouraged students to consider “Red” as foods to avoid, “Yellow” as foods to limit and “Green” as foods to eat more often. In addition, Principal Marie Pisicchio included trivia on nutritional facts each week during the morning announcements.

‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City. The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.

Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know. And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will

cooperate remains to be seen. March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home. So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

Mighty Fine Arts The North Bellmore School District’s top art and drama students are being given an opportunity to further develop their talents through the Student Arts League, a program open to sixthgraders. Classes are held for students from all five schools at Newbridge Road Elementary School, with groups typically meeting for three hours twice a month. Teacher Alison Hill said that an audition is required for interested theater students, and an art portfolio must be created for consideration in the visual arts program. “The Student Arts League gives them a time and space to explore their talents and express their creativity in drama and the visual arts,” said Janet Pollitt,

assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. In the dramatic arts program, participants write scripts, take part in acting games, refine their public speaking abilities and think on their feet through improvisation. It all builds up to an endof-year showcase in which students perform their own five- to seven-minute skits. “I’ve always loved performing,” said Martin Avenue Elementary School student Kristina Trupo. “This gives us a chance to try new things and gives us ideas about careers we might want to do when we grow up.” Saw Mill Road Elementary School student Nazair Stith, who said he has had a passion for acting

since watching movies as a young child, added, “It helps us to be stronger in our stage performances.” The visual arts students create several major projects during the year, in addition to maintaining sketchbooks. They make Mandalas, circular representations of their lives based on a Tibetan art form done in a medium of their choosing including colored pencils, watercolor paint or markers. Students also create wire sculptures, scratch art and still-life paintings. These activities give the children new opportunities that are built from the skills they have learned throughout elementary school. Their work is displayed at the year-end showcase.

Bond Referendum Approved On Tuesday, March 7th, East Meadow residents approved the community’s first joint East Meadow Schools and Public Library capital project bond referendum by a vote of 2,031 Yes to 835 No. Projects included in this bond will address major repairs and renovations to schools districtwide, improve energy efficiency, support science initiatives, and restore natural grass athletic fields for school and community use. The bond will also fund major

repairs and upgrades to the public library that will support additional programs and services, improve energy efficiency and security systems, and increase opportunities for students and patrons. “The Board of Education and administration would like to thank all community residents who voted on the bond and for their approval and continued support,” said Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo. “This is an exciting time for our

community and we look forward to improving our schools for our students and for future generations to come.” East Meadow Public Library Director Carol Probeyahn said, “On behalf of the library Board of Directors, we want to thank the community for your vote of support. We are looking forward to improving our library to provide expanded services for our children and community residents.”

Max Basil, an Advanced Science Research student at John F. Kennedy High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District, will once again be a published author in the science community. The senior’s research will be published as an abstract in the April issue of the

Journal of the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons. This will be his second journal publication as a co-author. “These awards and accomplishments tell just part of the ongoing story of research at Kennedy,” said Science Chairperson Robert Soel.

“Our ASR students excel in competitions regionally and nationally. They are making authentic contributions to the scientific community, and they are inspiring their peers and the young students coming up after them.”

Full Day Pre-K Island, which focuses on the developmental needs of pre-K to 6th grade students instructed in three unique, specialized schools with pre-K to 2nd grade at the Reinhard Early Childhood Center, Grades 3-4 at the Winthrop Avenue School, and Grades 5-6 at the Shore Road School. There will be a limited number of full-day placements available, which will be decided by lottery, if necessary. The fee for the Star Pre-K Plus program is $485 per month. Bellmore’s prekindergarten classes offer developmentally appropriate academic, art, music, physical education, foreign language and character development programs. The district also offers students stateof-the-art technology and emphasizes the unique talents and leadership inherent in all children. The Early Childhood Center’s highly

experienced teaching staff hold New York State teaching certifications and advanced degrees. Educational specialists at the center include speech/ language, occupational and physical therapists, special education and English as a New Language teachers and school psychologists. An article by Wantagh Elementary Supervisor Jessica Zimmer has been published in the Winter 2017 edition of “Vanguard,” a publication by the School Administrators Association of New York State. Titled “Magical Phrases: Using Words that Connect Us With Parents,” the article describes how certain language not only establishes better

discipline, but strongly connects administrators with parents. “The article is about how it is an administrator’s job to teach social skills and lifelong lessons, as well as how to get parents on board with these concepts,” Ms. Zimmer said. The East Islip resident has served as an elementary supervisor in Wantagh for three years. She acquired

a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from LIU Post, a master’s degree in literacy K-12 from Dowling College and advanced educational leadership certification from Stony Brook University. The Wantagh School District congratulates Ms. Zimmer on this outstanding accomplishment.

Disaster Research The Forest Lake Elementary School in the gymnasium was recently abuzz with enthusiastic fifth-graders, who were excited to share their research projects on 28 various natural disasters with peers and family members. During a science unit

on weather, the Wantagh students chose a natural disaster to study and research, such as tornadoes, typhoons, hurricanes and earthquakes. Their assignment was to use three or more sources for research and provide diagrams, photos, graphs, charts and historical

examples to complete a trifold, 3-D model or experiment. The projects were then displayed at the school’s inaugural science fair. In addition, select students were chosen to demonstrate some of their research to engage visitors in the scientific process.

competitions against districts with a similar program. Challenger League student-athletes from Division Avenue High School paired off against league participants from MacArthur High School and Salk Middle School during a basketball game. The participants were assisted by buddies and were cheered on by the high school cheerleaders

as they tried scored points for their teams. At the start of the game, participant Stephanie Church sang the national anthem and then each student was introduced to the community. The players showed an enormous amount of sportsmanship while still demonstrating their competitive spirit. The evening ended with a victory for each of the teams.

Sanford H. Calhoun High School’s Virtual Enterprise team, Poseidon Pure, were recently named LI Region of Virtual Enterprises Business Plan Competition finalists. Caleigh Alfarone, Devon Bayer, Rebecca Holtz, Colleen McKenna and Sara Samir were among those chosen. “These young ladies showed the utmost of professionalism, poise and confidence not only in their presentations but most importantly

in their preparation,” said their coach/teacher Peter Palazzo. “They were extremely diligent throughout the entire process and worked seamlessly together as a cohesive unit. Their understanding and mastery of business concepts is evident in what they have accomplished.” Poseidon Pure created a business/plan as well as the presentation as part of the competition. “They are a [theoretical] water filtration company,”

explained Palazzo. “They offer water filtration products to individuals, families, teams, schools, offices, etc. They also have charitable donations that help improve the life of others exposed to contaminated drinking water.” The Long Island VE firms will move on to the National Business Plan Competition in New York City on April 3rd at Microsoft Technology Center.

Kindness Project During the month of February, the second- and third-graders of Michelle Fenelius’ and Jenn Gargan’s classes spread

kindness throughout Norman J. Levy Lakeside School in the Merrick School District with their interactive kindness board.

As part of the school’s social and emotional service-learning program, Lions Quest, the students were asked to create a

project that involved the whole school. They discussed what kindness means, how one can be kind to others, how it feels to receive a compliment and the ripple effect that kindness has on people. After deliberation, the second- and third-grade students decided on creating a kindness board with the theme “Candy Is Sweet, but Compliments Are Sweeter,” where others could write compliments. hearts, students were able to take a heart off the board to keep or give to someone. Paper hearts were also placed next to the board for students to write more kind words. Students of both classes were in charge of explaining the board’s purpose during the morning announcements and classroom visits, motivating others to participate, and frequently filling the board with hearts. Additionally, teachers were asked to nominate students who performed random acts of kindness for the “Kisses for Kindness” initiative. Nominees received a certificate of

recognition and a paper Hershey’s Kiss with their name on it that would be displayed on the kindness board. Students were rewarded for pushing in a classmate’s chair, helping someone clean up, eating lunch with a new friend and including others during recess. Ms. Fenelius and Ms. Gargan were extremely proud of how successful the board was. “The enthusiasm and participation we received not only from our students but from the entire school was truly remarkable,” said Ms. Gargan.

Bringing Readers Together With children and adults across the country coming together to celebrate the birthday of renowned writer Dr. Seuss, Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District joined in the festivities. Read Across America was celebrated on March 2nd on what would have been the 113th birthday of the author. Buddy classes got together to share Dr. Seuss stories and participate in other reading and writing activities. Children in Danielle McAllister’s fifthgrade class were joined by students in Lynda Brust’s and Andrea Schmitt’s firstgrade class for a reading

of “There’s a Wocket in My Pocket.” Students then worked together to make their own book, with each buddy pair creating one page by picking a household location or object and a nonsense word that rhymes, and drawing a picture. “I want students to develop a love of reading and a love of writing,” said Principal Denise Fisher. “Dr. Seuss opens their eyes to a variety of genres. He’s unique in the sense that he’s able to give children different perspectives in the types of writing, because sometimes he’s serious and sometimes he’s silly.”

Karen Barrins’ secondgraders and JoAnn Belferder’s third-graders took a reader’s oath together. Throughout the school, students could be found next to each other on carpets and at desks reading to one another. Children said the event helped them understand about the value of reading, such as fifth-grader Sanjay Persaud who explained that it helps him improve his spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. “Reading is very important,” said fifthgrader Katie Burke, “because it helps your imagination and it gives you knowledge.”

Green Eggs and Ham In recognition of Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2, kindergarten students in Danielle Schiavetta’s class at Forest lake Elementary School in Wantagh participated in a green eggs and ham activity.

In addition to reading Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham,” the students made predictions about whether they would like green eggs. On the whiteboard, the students then read a green eggs recipe and

assisted Ms. Schiavetta in making the dish for an afternoon snack. After trying their recipe, the students graphed whether the eggs were indeed tasty and compared their results to their predictions.

Members of the Bowling Green Elementary School Kiwanis Kids in the East Meadow School District recently teamed up to help young children in Indonesia and Nicaragua pursue their educational dreams through the Bezos Family Foundation’s Students Rebuild Youth Uplift Challenge. The students assembled on February 27th to cut out paper hands and inscribe messages on them using crayons, colored pencils and markers. The uplifting messages suggested ways

to make the world a better place, such as preserving the earth, being kind to all and helping others. According to its website, the Bezos Family Foundation was created in 2010 in response to the devastating Haiti earthquake with the mission of assisting young people to achieve their full potential and make a meaningful contribution to society through education. The Youth Uplift Challenge invests in financial literacy, job and entrepreneurship training, and youth-led

On Their Feet groups and networks to help young people overcome the setbacks of poverty. For every hand sent in, the Bezos Family Foundation donates $1.90 - up to $500,000 - to Save the Children’s programs, which empower youth in Indonesia and Nicaragua to rise into the life they dream of. Celebrating Mardi Gras

Kickline Performs

After having their flight canceled, the Wellington C. Mepham High School kickline squad in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District was not having their hopes of competing at nationals squelched. Instead, the girls and coaches hopped on a coach bus and braved an 18-hour ride to Orlando, Florida.

“We competed in small varsity jazz, large varsity team performance and large varsity pom,” said teacher/coach Kerry Dennis. “This was the most competitive nationals we have ever attended. The competition was incredible. We received our highest score ever in team performance but missed finals by seventh

hundredths of a point.” Still the squad made it to finals for pom and jazz, placing 10th place out of 24 in pom and 15th place out of 30 in jazz. “The girls had an incredible time and represented Mepham and Bellmore-Merrick in the best possible way,” Dennis added.

Denise Schleith’s seventh- and eighth-grade French classes recently celebrated Mardi Gras at Merrick Avenue Middle School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District. Seventh-grade French students made Mardi Gras masks and learned about Mardi Gras celebrations in various French-speaking countries as well as in New

Orleans. Student volunteers made king cakes, traditional cakes eaten during Mardi Gras, decorated with the colors representing Mardi Gras (purple, green and gold.) Eighth-grade French students also continued a fun tradition from last year. “As the tradition goes, the students who received the ‘baby’ in their piece

of cake the previous year would receive good luck for that year, and have to make the king cake the following year,” explained Schleith. “In keeping with the tradition, two students brought in king cakes for the class to enjoy. All students received beads for answering questions about Mardi Gras and French culture.”

Merit Finalists Named

Two seniors from the East Meadow School District - Jordan Diamond from East Meadow High School and Alby Joseph from W.T. Clarke High School - have been recognized as finalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. To become one of the nation’s 15,000 finalists, Jordan and Alby had to submit a detailed scholarship application including their academic record, participation in extracurricular activities and community engagement, leadership ability, employment, and record of honors and awards. They also had

to achieve an SAT score equivalent to their PSAT score, maintain their prestigious academic performance and receive a recommendation from a high school official. The seniors will be notified this spring as to whether they are among the 7,500 students who have been selected to receive awards and scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Program based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments. Members of the NMS committee will evaluate the seniors’ academic records, the curricula and grading systems at their schools,

and their SAT scores, high school officials’ recommendations, information about their activities and leadership, and finalist essays. “I was pretty excited when I heard I was a finalist,” said Jordan. “This advancement is a rewarding reflection of my hard work. I believe the additional materials I submitted to the competition, such as the personal essay, also contributed to this designation.” Jordan is involved in numerous organizations at East Meadow High School, including membership in the National Honor Society and Social Studies Honor Society. He also serves as president of Model Congress, the Environmental Club, and the Math and Research Club. In addition, he belongs to the school’s peer mentoring program, where he educates younger students about bullying and the dangers of alcohol and drug consumption. Within the program, he also mentors a fellow East Meadow High School student, providing guidance and friendship throughout the year. Outside of school, Jordan volunteers as a

The Alix Rubinger Kosher Food Pantry has been relocated from Congregation BethEl in Massapequa to Congregation Beth Ohr in Bellmore. The Pantry is open Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. There is a large selection of non-perishable kosher foods that are available to all residents of Nassau County regardless of religious affiliation. Clarke High School’s Alby Joseph balances a rigorous schedule of Advanced Placement and college-level courses while immersing himself in an assortment of extracurricular activities. Among these, he is copresident of the school’s Tri-M Music, Science and National honor societies. He is also a member of the Math Honor Society, the school newspaper, Mathletes and Science Olympiad. With a passion for the cello, he has performed for the last three years in the pit orchestra for the school’s plays, in the AllState Festival at the New York State School Music Association 2016 Winter Conference, and will

perform at the upcoming National Association for Music Education’s 2017 Biennial Eastern Division Conference, the Nassau Music Educators Association All-County Festival and the Long Island String Festival Association’s Nassau Secondary Festival. Along with this exceptional achievement, Alby was recognized as a scholar in the 2017 Regeneron Science Talent Search and was named a semifinalist in the 2016 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology. “After hearing I was a

finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program, I realized how appreciative I am for my time at Clarke,” Alby said. “I am beyond thankful for the opportunities I had while growing up in the East Meadow School District.” In the fall, Alby wishes to study chemical engineering. Funding Awarded Supervisor Anthony J. Santino and the Hempstead Town Board are helping the volunteers who help our police officers by awarding various Auxiliary Police Units $19,000 to fund their training. The funding will provide $500 per unit in incorporated villages and $1,000 per unit in unincorporated hamlets. The Civil Defense Auxiliary Police assist in many police activities, such as crowd control, roadway crossing assistance and traffic control. “The assistance that the men and women of the Auxiliary Police provide to our great police departments directly contributes to making America’s largest township one of the safest places in which to live and raise a family,” stated Santino. “The Town of Hempstead

is honored to be able to provide assistance to this group of volunteers.” The Town of Hempstead executed agreements to provide $500 to the Civil Defense Auxiliary Units of East Rockaway, Lynbrook, Rockville Centre and Stewart Manor for the 2017 year. The town also agreed to provide $1,000 to each of the following units that serve unincorporated areas: Baldwin, Bellmore, East Meadow, Elmont, Five Towns, Lakeview, Levittown, Merrick, North Bellmore, Oceanside, Roosevelt, Seaford, South Hempstead, Uniondale, Wantagh, and West Hempstead. “One of the things that makes Hempstead Town a great place to live is the selfless volunteers who step up to make our communities safer,” said

Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad. The funding provided by the Town of Hempstead will be used by each unit to recruit, equip, and train its members. Art Honor Society A total of 74 high school students in the East Meadow School District – 42 from East Meadow High School and 32 from W.T. Clarke High School – were inducted into the district’s National Art Honor Society in a ceremony on February 28th. To become a member of the East Meadow chapter, students must be in grades 10-12, maintain an unweighted GPA of 85 percent and have a 90 percent or higher average in their art classes. NAHS advisers Gerard Ferrara and Jane Pawlowski of East Meadow High

School and W.T. Clarke High School, respectively, opened the ceremony by recognizing the talented inductees for their hard work and dedication to the arts and their studies. Following, both schools’ NAHS presidents shared how art has impacted their lives and reflected on how it takes courage to make art in today’s society. Continuing the celebration, guest speaker Frank Dentrone, a W.T. Clarke High School English teacher, expressed ways in which art has influenced his life and bestowed words of wisdom

upon the honorees. “My advice to you is to stay young, my friends,” said Mr. Dentrone. “Keep your eyes open for new things even in the most mundane situations, and keep your hearts open to that creative voice within you for as long as you can. I do believe you’re going to need it.” After taking the honor society pledge, the inductees joined fellow NAHS members and guests for light refreshments in the art gallery, where they toured an exhibit of artwork created by members of the society.

Focusing on Dance Levittown student Jared Stern, a MacArthur High School senior and student at the Long Island High School for the Arts, assisted in the development of the 2017 Inaugural Induction Ceremony for the National Honor Society for Dance Arts. As president of the

NHS for Dance Arts, Jared assisted teachers Dina Denis and Sydney Weltman in determining the qualifications for NHS membership and oversaw the election of board members. Jared is also a member of the Arrhythmia Dance Company in Smithtown,

Club at Woodland Middle School and the Key Club at East Meadow High School. She currently serves as the student chairperson for the North Shore University Hospital Foundation’s Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center, for which she organizes fundraisers, serves as a liaison between the organization and high school students, and speaks to volunteers and potential donors about the organization’s mission. In addition to her volunteer service, Shermeen is a board member of her school’s Ethnic Awareness club and a member of the Math Team, Key Club, Students Against Destructive Decisions and Science

Research, as well as the Science, Social Studies, Business, Spanish and National honor societies. She is also a member of Glamour Girls, which provides retirement home residents with cosmetic services such as hairstyling and manicures. The district commends Rachel and Shermeen for their exemplary service to the community and wishes them the best of luck in their future endeavors. Kind Words Kind words do not cost much.
