(SBPLI) is announcing that March is Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science and Engineering Month and is urging girls to get involved in robotics as a way to become interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science and Engineering Month was created by the Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Network, a notfor-profit organization that encourages young women to pursue careers in STEM. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Are you all enjoying your one extra hour of daylight? Feels more springy already, doesn’t it? Me, I’ve always looked to St. Patrick’s Day as the transitional date when winter finally – and hopefully thoroughly – gives way to spring. After that, it’s only a matter of time ‘til we’re dying Easter eggs, breaking out the pastels and looking to plant our gardens. After journeying to Ireland this past summer, it was fascinating to see how little the homeland pays attention to this

“holiday.” It is a uniquely American celebration of… well, in theory, Irish pride. In reality… let’s just say, Irish heritage seems to be optional in the grand parade of drunkenness and debauchery that descends upon the entire month of March here in New York. But back to the dawn of spring and sunshine and butterflies and flowers… there’s something very exciting about this rebirth of Mother Nature, isn’t there? The time for hibernation is over. Get out the cleaning supplies, put away any lingering remnants of winter, and start redecorating for this

new season of rebirth. So, take solace. It’s been one long, tedious winter, to be sure. But spring is ready to be sprung upon us all. Open the windows, let the light in, stop and smell the flowers – once they’ve begun to bloom, of course. Pretty soon, the snowcovered landscape will be a distant memory. We’ve all claimed we’re going to enjoy this upcoming spring and summer that much more after the last several months of bone-chilling cold. So let’s follow through on that, shall we? No time like the present to begin anew.

The competition is named after the late cartoonist Rube Goldberg, who specialized in drawing simple machines made out of ordinary objects to accomplish a task. This year’s task was to zip a zipper, and the students’ machines were judged on complexity, machine flow, creativity, humor, storytelling and achievement of the assigned task.

Director of science and technology education Kathleen Cahill explained that the students have been working on their projects since last spring. “The students utilized their STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to solve a problem, in this case to zip a zipper,” she said. “Any student can participate in the Rube Goldberg competition and the teams work together to problem solve solutions to the task.”

Artists Of Excellence

The artwork of Kerri DeLisi and Nicolette Piscitelli, seniors at MacArthur High School in Levittown, was selected for exhibition in the Advanced Vision 10: High School Artists of Excellence exhibition at LIU Post. The annual exhibit highlights artwork of excellence among the most talented, skilled and artistically creative art students on Long Island. In addition, Kerri received an honorable mention award for her pencil drawing of a young girl suffering from insomnia. Kerri’s piece is from her portfolio concentrating on mental disorders. “I think being selected for the show is an honor in itself,” Kerry said. “Getting recognized for something you worked so long and hard is truly a rewarding feeling.” Nicolette’s entry was a colored pencil and ink drawing from her portfolio concentrating on anatomy and figure drawing. The piece combined a female figure and machine-aged imagery inspired by the mechanics of the human body. Kerri and Nicolette are both Advanced Placement students in Lynn Spinnato’s class. The Division Avenue High School administration and staff is pleased to announce that Savvas Papadopoulos and Lyndsey Petrofsky have been named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectfully, of the Division Avenue High School Class of 2014. Savvas is an Advanced Placement student with Distinction and a 2013 recipient of the Rensselaer Medal for Excellence in Science and Mathematics. He was also selected to participate in the prestigious Stony Brook University Simons Summer Research Program and was a student ambassador for the People to People program in France, Italy and Greece. Savvas is the president of both the Science Olympiad team and student council and is a member of the National Honor Society,

robotics team and Math Honor Society. In addition to his educational pursuits, Savvas is a Boy Scout and renovated the entrance to the Levittown Historical Society as his Eagle Scout project. He plans to attend Cornell University this coming fall, where he will study engineering. Lyndsey is an Advanced Placement Scholar and recently attended a school trip to France. For the second consecutive year, she has held the office of president for the Distributive Educators Club of America and competed at the national level last school year. Lyndsey is the Key Club project manager and treasurer of the Chamber Singers, as well as a member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society and broadcast club. Lyndsey is a guitarist and formerly attended the New

York State School Music Association’s All-State competition. She also had her artwork displayed in Times Square as a winner in a Sharpie Company art competition to promote the band “One Direction.” In addition to her educational pursuits, Lyndsey works closely with the Nassau County regional and school PTA organizations to head workshops about drug abuse and its effects on families. Lyndsey has been accepted to Binghamton University, but is still undecided where she will study international business in the fall. The Levittown School District congratulates both Savvas and Lyndsey on these exceptional accomplishments and extends best wishes for a successful future.

A talented musician, Belinda is an All-State and Long Island String Festival Association participant, a member of the school’s pit orchestra, vice president of the chamber orchestra, and has played at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as a member of the Gemini Youth Orchestra. Her extracurricular activities include being a

Peer Leader and a member of the Key Club, mathletes, Amnesty International and the international Art club, as well as the art and recycling clubs. Last year, Belinda was one of five MacArthur High School students chosen to compete in the Nassau County Math Competition and had a poem published in “A Celebration of Poets.” In addition, Belinda is a volunteer for Tom Souzzi’s democratic campaign for Nassau County Executive. She has not chosen a college at this time, but plans on studying economics this fall. Mira is an Advanced Placement student with Honors and one of 90 girls nationwide to intern for NASA WISH at the L.B.J. Space Center in Houston. She was a Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership semifinalist and an honorable mention winner in the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. In addition to having received Senator Kemp Hannon’s

Rising Star Award, Mira was selected to serve as a Peer Leader and a member of the School Development Committee. She is a member of the robotics, science bowl and Environthon teams and is a member of the Christian and art clubs. She has also held offices in the World Language Honor Society and environmental club. An accomplished pianist, Belinda was selected as an All-State musician. She is also a Science Olympiad, Science Congress, and Math Oympiad winner. As an athlete, Mira has competed four years on the school’s swim team and the USA Swim Team and plays tennis and soccer on outside teams. A conscientious volunteer, Mira’s efforts include blood drives, car washes, nursing homes, hospitals, youth galas, and church groups. She has not chosen a college at this time, but plans on studying neuroscience this fall.

Wantagh High School senior Andrew Bloniarz has been selected as a candidate for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in academics, leadership, service and artistic excellence. Each year, only 3,000 students are invited to apply for consideration as a Presidential Scholar. In April, 560 semifinalists will be selected and only 141 students will ultimately be named Presidential Scholars. Andrew is an Advanced Placement Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society and National Foreign Language and Tri-M Music

Program Candidate honor societies. He was named a News 12 ScholarAthlete for his scholastic accomplishments, athletic ability in track and leadership qualities and service to others. Andrew is president of the Class of 2014, homecoming king, a member of the school’s General Organization and student representative to the school’s shared decision making committee. Other scholastic pursuits include team captain of the awardwinning Science Olympiad Mathletes and Rube Goldberg teams. Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad are inviting residents to start planning their week off on their day off. “Passport Day in the USA’s Largest Township” will be held at Hempstead Town Hall (1 Washington Street, Hempstead) on Saturday, March 22nd, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering residents a convenient weekend date

Clarke Middle School’s Student Government, with support from Sacred Heart Academy and Hofstra University, donated more than 700 pairs of jeans to Cotton Incorporated’s Blue Jeans Go Green denim recycling program. Through the program, the jeans collected by

After studying the concepts of momentum and impulse, Wantagh Middle School sixthgrade students enrolled in the Horizons program created devices designed to protect eggs dropped from a vertical distance of 20-30 feet. The teams of students were first

instructed to sketch their egg drop designs, and then use various materials to construct the devices while keeping in mind the principles of drag, cushion, suspension and overall mass. The teams started dropping their eggs from 10 feet, and then each

surviving team progressed to a higher level. For each of the two participating classes, there were two teams that successfully dropped their devices from the top of the bleachers. The egg drop device with the smaller mass was determined the winner.
