This year’s Long Island Builders Institute Home, Trade & Remodeling Expo will feature some of Long Island’s biggest homebuilders exhibiting their newest projects, along with four custom made children’s playhouses, which one will be raffled off, and three will be donated to some great philanthropic organizations on Long Island. In the East Meadow School District, 23 East Meadow High School and 16 W. T. Clarke High School students were inducted into the district’s Art Honor Society on February 24th. To become a member,
students must be in grades 10-12, maintain an unweighted GPA of 85 percent and have a 90 percent or higher average in their art classes. Recently, the Art Honor Society created underwater, space and
fantasy theme coloring books for children at Nassau University Medical Center. To accompany the coloring books, the society is hosting a crayon drive until March 15 for students to donate new boxes of crayons.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time continues to march on, and those moments we so casually took for granted along the way become nothing more than a distant memory, relegated to the nostalgia pile, to be savored in the imagination only. The difference, though, is that these flashbacks are increasingly from not so long ago, mere years, rather than decades… yet they seem a lifetime away, just out of reach. It’s the little things, too, the laughs shared, the stories told, the impromptu gatherings, the gifts exchanged, the memories made. Whether with family members, friends, co-workers, even the occasional stranger, every moment is part of something
larger, a curve in the path – your path – of life. Every decision made, or not made; each chance encounter or outlined goal – all leads to the point we are currently at, for better or worse. How amazing to be able to foresee the consequences of our actions; but then, our choices would be far simpler, wouldn’t they? Gone would be the mystery, the spontaneity, the happy accidents that tend to occur along the way when you simply close your eyes and just let life take you by the hand. There are those who believe in destiny; and there are those who refuse to think we don’t have as much input in our affairs as any otherworldly force. Which is right? Who’s to say. The only indisputable fact is that everything does
happen for a reason. People come into our lives, or go, as the case may be; and we are better for it. Every chance meeting is a lesson in disguise, to be determined at a later date. In the meantime, we go on, as does time. Our world grows smaller as circumstances change our daily dynamics, and we are forced to adjust, whether we care to or not. The memories fade, and their significance wanes in the face of more urgent, pressing matters. But we should never forget… the people, the places, the roads taken – all have led to here and now. And one day, not so very far away, this, too, will be but a snapshot in the giant album of life. We had best preserve it from now.

staff and students to gather gently used prom dresses and accessories for young women living in homeless shelters. “Felisa Sternbach is the parent of a Mepham alumnus who contacted me asking if our Key Club would collect dresses to give to underprivileged girls,” explained Cheliotes, who also serves as the club’s faculty adviser. She said they collected more than 180 prom dresses and 30 pairs of shoes/accessories to be distributed at the Magical Moment event, held on for 100 Men. Biz Plan Finalists This month, the student business leaders of John F. Kennedy High School represented the BellmoreMerrick CHSD in the final round of the Long Island Virtual Enterprises (LI VE) Business Plan Competition. The LI VE is a collaborative effort that includes Nassau BOCES, Eastern Suffolk BOCES, Western Suffolk BOCES and the CTE Technical Assistance Center of New York. John F. Kennedy competed against 40 teams in the first round of the Sixth Annual Business Plan Competition, held in January at Farmingdale State College. The
students created two separate companies for the competition - Boxality and On the Move - for which they presented comprehensive business plans. After their presentations, the John F. Kennedy executives answered a round of questions from the judges, then promoted their businesses at the competition’s tradeshow, modeled after the realworld industry standard. In the end, it was On The Move that earned the right to compete in the Finals, hosted by American Portfolios Financial Services. The winning student entrepreneurs of On The Move are Mitchell
Boyer, Eric Gossert, Jared Hirsch, Nicole Sand, Jason Teich and Jaret White. “The Long Island Virtual Enterprises Business Plan Competition is made possible as part of the Perkins Grant Consortium,” said Ms. Gene Silverman, executive director, Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs and facilitator of the consortium. “This is one of the many ways the grant enriches the lives of students throughout Nassau County by giving them real world work place and 21st Century skills while still in high school.”

Scholarships Available A new round of scholarships to encourage high school students to pursue high tech careers in New York State is available. The New York State Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Incentive Program provides a full SUNY tuition scholarship to the top ten percent of students in New York high schools if they major in a STEM field and work in a STEM job in New York State for five years after graduation. To qualify for a STEM award, a student must be attending a New York State high school and be ranked in the top ten percent of his/her graduating class and enroll in full-time study at a SUNY in the fall term following high school graduation. HSEC SUNY STEM Scholarship Award Eligibility An applicant must:
• be a legal resident of NYS and have resided in NYS for 12 continuous months; • be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen; • be a high school senior/ recent high school graduate who will be enrolled full time at a SUNY or CUNY college, including community colleges and the statutory colleges at Cornell University and Alfred University, beginning in the fall term following his or her high school graduation; • be ranked in the top 10 percent of his/her high school graduating class of a NYS high school; • be matriculated in an undergraduate program leading to a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics at a SUNY
or CUNY college; • earn a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher each term after the first semester; • execute a service contract agreeing to reside and work in NYS for five years in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics; • not be in default on a student loan made under any NYS or federal education loan program or repayment of any state award; and • be in compliance with the terms of any service condition imposed by a state award. Students matriculated in these programs of study may be eligible for a STEM Incentive Program award. The program of study must result in an approved occupation.

Student Celebrity Wellington C. Mepham High School student Robbie Commisso recently photographed a classmate, Ian Randman, performing a fiery chemistry demonstration. That photo is now the February cover image of science journal, Chem 13. The photo was captured during Josephine Parlagreco’s AP Chemistry class and features Randman creating a “thermite reaction,” which is the pyrotechnic composition of metal powder fuel and metal oxide.
Wrapped in History During the study of ancient civilizations, Bellmore students in Carolyn Acevedo’s sixthgrade class at Shore Road School learned first-hand about the mummification process. As a culminating activity of their studies on ancient Egypt, select students allowed their peers to wrap them in plastic bags
and tape before applying plaster strips to create a cast for a mummy’s body and head. “The mummy project was a perfect way to bring history to life,” Ms. Acevedo said. “The students had such a fun time, were extremely motivated, and did a wonderful job.” After the cast dried, the mummy was painted
gold. Students then had to create a back-story for the pharaoh, detailing his or her achievements, reign and death in narrative form. Based on the pharaoh’s life, the students will then choose patterns and symbols to paint on the mummy, and the placement of encrusted jewels will finish the process.
One Message, One Voice The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District will host its second annual “One Voice, One Message” Super Hero 5K Run/Walk this spring. The event will take place on April 16th, at 9 a.m., starting and ending at Grand Avenue Middle School. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The school district’s
student ambassadors are organizing the race, and this year’s theme is super heroes. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes. “All six schools within the district will be a part of this worthwhile cause to unite the district through community service,” said Dr. Mara Bollettieri, assistant superintendent of

Second-grade students at Forest Lake Elementary School in Wantagh shared their recently acquired knowledge of coding with third-grade peers while teaching them to make apps. In December, each of
the second-graders learned the basics of computer coding during the school’s first Hour of Code event. The third-grade students learned how to make their own apps using BitBox, a program that
teaches users to make a specific app. They simply followed the directions on the computer and after becoming familiar with the program, were able to create their own apps with their acquired skills.

Coding Knowledge Wantagh Elementary School students have been putting their creative skills to use while making pixel designs out of Perler beads. The activity took place in the school’s new Makerspace room, a designated classroom where students can design and create, as well as solve real-life problems. Students were first
instructed to draw their designs on paper and then apply the corresponding, multi-colored Perler beads to the plastic pegboards. They were encouraged to think how design and color come together, much like the way illustrators and animators use pixels in the design process. The students were also encouraged to think about
how using this skill can make the world a better place, including presents for family and friends or fundraising possibilities. Principal Dr. Randee Bonagura said the activity was a teachable moment. “This activity was a reallife extension in that it connected a school activity to a potential hobby or career,” she said.

Visit with Fox Fox News senior meteorologist Janice Dean took time to read her children’s book “Freddy the Frogcaster and the Huge Hurricane,” a favorite of students at Gardiners Avenue School in Levittown. Ms. Dean has written a series of children’s weather books, including “Freddy the Frogcaster” and
“Freddy the Frogcaster and the Big Blizzard,” which many of the students brought to school to be signed. During her visit, Ms. Dean discussed how being a meteorologist is an important job for the airlines, farmers and other professions who depend on accurate forecasts. She explained how hurricanes
and tropical storms are categorized and how a green screen is used to broadcast the weather. The most exciting part of Ms. Dean’s visit, however, was her reading of the colorful book about a frog that keeps his attention on the sky and the students’ opportunity to meet this respected author.
Creating Sole Mates Shore Road sixthgraders in Bellmore have embarked on a collaborate artistic representation of their connection to the school community, as well as their impending move to the middle school this fall. Called the “Sole” Mates Legacy Project, students are working with visiting artist Catherine Russell to create a maritime-themed mosaic, which will be installed on the wall later this spring as a parting gift to the school.
“This project symbolizes forward motion in a positive direction, as well as progress, as each one of you moves on to middle school,” Ms. Russell told the students. The two-part ceramic workshop encompasses ceramic procedures and techniques. Students first imprinted clay with the soles of their shoes to add a design element to the end product. Using a cookie cutter, each student cut out the shape of a fish and two small circles. Ms. Russell
then collected the clay shapes and placed them in a kiln for 10-12 hours at 1,200 degrees. Students will then paint and glaze the shapes, which will be designed and constructed into a mosaic in the shape of a fish. Ms. Russell explained that though the students will leave Shore Road and their gift behind, the bond they share and the pride in their collective accomplishments will stay with them as they embark on new beginnings.

The Levittown community filled the Jonas E. Salk Middle School gymnasium as Challenger League student-athletes competed in the annual homecoming game on February 23rd. Reading Trip to encourage students to become excited about reading. Some of the PARP activities included a Disney dress-up day and a bookmark competition, and students who logged the greatest number of minutes were invited to a party with Principal Frank Mortillaro. Angela Schuman’s second-grade
class and Josephine Richiusa’s fifth-grade class accumulated the most hours of reading, while fifth-grade student Liliana Benhammou was named the overall winner, having read 1,500 minutes. Museum Visit Marirose Merola’s English Prep classes from Sanford H. Calhoun High School recently visited the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County in Glen Cove. The English class finished reading “The Diary of Anne Frank” and saw many artifacts from the Holocaust ,including an actual Yellow Star that the Jewish people in
Holland had to wear. “Their tour guide was impressed with our student’s knowledge of the Holocaust,” said Merola. “She enjoyed the conversations she could have with our students.” After touring the museum, students listened to an 83 year-old Holocaust survivor, Karl Schapiro, who spent 18 months in a ditch under a barn floor
with 16 other people. “His talk made a lasting impression on them,” Merola said of her students. “The director of the museum was very impressed with both the behavior and the caliber of students. She created a modified program for my class, and would love to see more of our students visit.”

Students enrolled in Levittown’s electrical technology program at the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center have received safety and awareness certification from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The 10hour certification course is required by New York State Law and was provided by the Electrical Training Center, Inc. Instructor Tom Samilo explained that safety is the most important factor when performing electrical work and OSHA certification is required by all electrical workers employed on public works construction, reconstruction, maintenance and/or repair
projects. This course provided the students with training on recognition, avoidance, abatement and prevention of safety and health hazards in workplaces, as well as information regarding workers’ rights, employer responsibilities and filing complaints. “In addition to safety, OSHA certification can be added to the student’s resume for gainful employment,” Mr. Samilo said. Enrollment in the electrical technology program provides students with in-depth instruction and hands-on experience with residential and basic commercial wiring. During the two-year program, students learn
about electrical theory, safety, alternative energy power sources, electrical code standards and how to properly prepare diagrams/ blueprints for live electrical work. During the first year of the program, students become proficient in circuit interrupters (GFCI and AFCI), motors/ generators, pipe bending and installation and knowledgeable in the National Electrical Code. They learn how to wire doorbells and handle other low voltage wiring. In the second year of the program, students learn series and parallel circuitry and conduit bending, as well as blueprint schematic reading. There are also work-based learning opportunities at the entry level. Honors & Accolades On February 25th, the East Meadow Board of Education honored Board trustee Jeffrey Rosenking, East Meadow resident Eleanor Mongonia and Woodland Middle School and W. T. Clarke Middle School’s “Terrific Kids” during their communication meeting. Mr. Rosenking was recognized for his ongoing service as a board member and commitment to board training. Nassau Area 11 Director Robert “B.A.” Schoen presented Rosenking with the New York State School Boards Association Board Achievement Award for earning 75 points in leadership and development training through the School Board
U Recognition Program. Following this prestigious award, East Meadow High School Principal Richard Howard, Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo and board members honored 89-yearold East Meadow resident Eleanor Mongonia with the Distinguished Service Award. Prior to becoming a resident 31 years ago, Eleanor was raised in Brooklyn where she helped her father run the family business after her brothers were drafted to the World War II. The board presented Eleanor with this award for her loyalty and service to her country and family. As the meeting continued, Woodland Middle School Principal James Lethbridge and W.

Clarke Middle School Principal Stacy Breslin acknowledged their December, January and February “Terrific Kids.” The Terrific Kids program is sponsored by the East Meadow Kiwanis Club to recognize sixth-, seventhand eighth-grade students who constantly improve as individuals, students and members of the community. In addition, the board, district administration and community members received a special musical performance by the FREE Players Drumline and Woodland Middle School sixth-grade chorus.
Skype Session Levittown’s Salk and Wisdom Lane middle school sixth-grade students experienced a real-life connection to literature after they held a Skype session with 15 year-old Peter Dankelson, who was born with a craniofacial disorder. The students have been reading R.J Palacio’s “Wonder” whose main character, Auggie, has a similar disorder. Stares and criticisms have always been a part of Peter’s life, and he is trying to spread the message of kindness by speaking with students
across the United States via Skype during his lunch period. During the Skype session, students were able to ask Peter and his mother, Dede, questions about his deformity and how he relates to Auggie in “Wonder.” Students inquired how facial differences have made his life better in some ways, whether he still receives stares and comments and whether peers accept him at school. Peter said he has lots of friends and that having a craniofacial disorder has
allowed him to speak to students throughout the country about being kind and non-judgmental. Peter said, “The people who accept you are people who you should hang out with.” Director of English K-12 Kerin Slattery explained that the Skype session drove home the message of the book in that Peter and Auggie shared a common thread. She congratulated Peter on his courage to speak to students about his disorder and thanked him for the message he taught the sixth-grade students.

Nabbing the Title The Bellmore-Merrick boys hockey team capped an undefeated season with a comeback victory to capture the Nassau County championship. The boys secured the February 26th win at the Long Beach ice arena in front of a raucous crowd.
The Bulldogs were up 3-0 when Long Beach tied it up and went ahead 4-3. The Bulldogs then tied the score in the final minutes of regulation to get into overtime. Then, in a thrilling fashion, they won on a penalty shot by junior John
Olsen. The final score was 5-4, the Bulldogs. The team, led by Coach Chris Patten and Coach Lee Mattes, will travel upstate to compete in the New York State Championships March 5th-6th.

The John F. Kennedy High School student government and Sports Boosters hosted their annual Jam the Gym events on January 29th and February 9th in order to support the girls and boys basketball teams. The nights were filled with fun and spirit for teachers, students and their families. Hundreds of people “jammed the gym” to support the teams
while having the chance to participate in entertaining halftime games and raffles. On January 29th, the fans packed the stands to cheer the girls on as they competed against Great Neck North. It was exciting to see the girls defeat their opponent; senior Cora Travaglione led the Cougars and earned the Player of the Game honor. Again students filled the gym on February 9th

Jamming the Gym to show the same support for the boys. Fans held up signs and pictures to show their love. The boys put a good fight but lost a close match to Carey. During both events, students participated in halftime contests like Ultimate Knockout and Guess the Final Score. Dozens of other raffles were held during the night.

Mastering the Method that participants were encouraged to try their hands at safe and practical experiments and to share results by developing a formal presentation. “The purpose of the science fair is for students to discover things they did not know and to get students excited about science,” Mr. Wallrapp said. In accordance with
the scientific method, participants identified a problem, formulated a hypothesis and developed a method to facilitate their experiment. After the experiments were conducted, students collected data to document their results, analyzed their findings and drew academically sound conclusions.
R.I.S.E. Program, an inhouse character education program implemented seven years ago, stands for respect, integrity, safety and staying healthy and empathy. Principal John Zampaglione said he is extremely honored that Character.org is considering Salk Middle School as a National School of Character and explained that the students and staff are responsible for having incorporated many of the R.I.S.E principles in their everyday behavior. “The school strives daily to demonstrate good behavior, tone, traits and
characteristics we teach in all of the activities associated with our character education program,” he stated. During the 20142015 school year, Salk Middle School received an Honorable Mention Award as a New York State School of Character by the Academy for Character Education at the Esteves School of Education of the Sage Colleges in Troy. In the 2013-2014 school year, the same organization recognized the middle school as an Emerging School of Character.

High School for the Arts Honored Anthony Morano of the Massapequa UFSD, a theater student at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), was honored recently by the White House, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and Prudential Financial for his humanitarian efforts. He earned both the President’s Volunteer Service Award and the
Prudential Spirit of Community Award for his substantial volunteer work. “Your volunteer service demonstrates the kind of commitment to your community that moves America a step closer to its great promise,” wrote President Barack Obama in a congratulatory letter to Anthony. “Thank you for your devotion to service, for helping to address the most pressing
needs in your community and our country, and for doing all you can to shape a better tomorrow for our great Nation.” The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes those who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country. It is offered in partnership by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, the NASSP
and Prudential. Anthony was also named a Distinguished Finalist for the State of New York in the 2016 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. He was selected for the distinction by a panel of state-level judges based on a rigorous set of criteria including personal initiative, effort, impact and personal growth. “You are an exemplary role model for your
peers,” wrote NASSP Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti and Prudential Financial Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld in a joint letter to Anthony. “Thank you for your inspiring commitment to serving your community. Contributions like yours make our communities and our entire nation stronger. We salute you for your achievement.” During the course of the past four years, Anthony
has raised $10,000 for a number of charities. He is also the host of LIHSA’s annual “Cemetery of Lost Souls” fundraiser, which he holds at his home in Massapequa Park. The event is supported by a number of Long island institutions including WBAB radio and the Halloween Home Haunters of Long Island.

Joys of Winter Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center kindergarten students in Jennifer Magliano’s class were not affected by the freezing, cold temperatures of winter, but instead, celebrated the
joys of the season during a Winter White Party. The celebration included the recitation and dramatic presentation of winter poems and songs for proud parents and staff in attendance. Students then
made a snowman craft and concluded the activity with snowy white treats and hot cocoa with marshmallows. In addition, everyone wore white or their best “Frozen” attire to mark the season.
100 Days Smarter In the East Meadow School District, Barnum Woods Elementary School kindergartners celebrated their first 100 days of school. Marianne Berry’s kindergartners began the day by strutting down the runway in their designer “100 Day T-Shirts.” Each student created a T-shirt featuring 100 items. The
collection included shirts with stars, hearts, stickers and pom-poms. Following the fashion show, Ms. Berry’s class rotated between various stations focusing on what students have learned since the first day of school. The 100-themed stations consisted of imprinting 100 stamps by counting by tens, writing and drawing
what they have learned over the past 100 days, and creating a 100 beaded necklace made of Fruit Loops. Continuing with the celebration, Kerri Portillo’s first-grade class read stories about 100 days of school and designed their own “100 Day T-Shirts” and “100 Days Smarter” crowns.

Word on the Street works and favorite literacy pieces to peers and parents. Director of ELA, Reading and Libraries Nicole Waldbauer said she was pleased to see that so many talented students participated in this celebration of the written word. “Word on the Street is a way for the district to celebrate literacy and the spoken word,” she noted. The cafeteria was decorated in a city theme with lights and banners of the New York City building scape and pizza was served to everyone who attended. 100 Ways to Be Thankful
On February 23rd, Meadowbrook Elementary School students in the East Meadow School District celebrated 100 days of learning. In preparation for the celebration, all students were encouraged to create a “100 T-shirt” utilizing 100 items to wear for the special day. The T-shirt designs included
100 “Smarties” candies, stickers and pipe cleaners. During the 100th day, each grade level participated in various 100 days of learning activities focusing on their creativity, writing and mathematical skills. Students in grades K-2 created 100 day crowns and decorated capes and banners with 100 items. Students in
grades 3-5 expressed their appreciation and gratitude toward their education, teachers and principals by creating puzzles, quilts and flags. Each puzzle piece, quilt swatch and flag contained a message from students thanking the teachers, principals and friends for making learning fun.

Impressive Season The Levittown MacArthur High School girls bowling team concluded another impressive season. The varsity team was named conference champions with an 11-1 record and finished second in the county for a second consecutive year. The varsity team was led by senior Rose-Marie
Snyder, who finished the season with a 189 average and earned All-County honors for the fourth consecutive year. Junior Amanda DeLisi finished the season with a 180 average and sophomore Amanda Petrillo finished with a 179 average. Both girls earned All-County honors for a second consecutive year. In addition, Skye
Mollica rounded out the starting varsity team by bowling consistently strong throughout the entire season. This summer, Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), Long Island’s top-ranked arts school, invites students to learn from the masters in a variety of disciplines. The LIHSA Summer Arts Academy offers young artists (entering grades 6-12 in the fall) a hands-on learning experience with professional artists who will help them to develop their skills. Beginnerthrough advanced-level classes and workshops are conducted in a custom-designed, airconditioned arts complex
that boasts professional dance studios, state-ofthe-art digital media and music/audio production labs, art studios, practice rooms and a fully-equipped professional theatre. Daily courses are available in dance, music (instrumental, voice and digital), theatre (drama and musical theatre), film and visual arts. Attendees work with ensembles, enjoy performances from guest artists and take cultural field trips to museums and Broadway shows. The academy concludes with performances by all students in each arts
discipline. This four-week academy runs July 5th through 29th, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Enrollment into the academy requires an individual school district recommendation. Accepted students are placed in classes based on age and level of achievement. Members of the South Nassau Unitarian Universalist Congregation (SNUUC) religious education program delivered books to member Dr. William BrysonBrockmann, Pediatric Psychologist at Winthrop University Hospital. Dr. Bryson-Brockmann a resident of Massapequa and long-time member of the Freeport congregation started the Reach Out and Read program at the hospital. He estimates that
by the time most children start kindergarten, they will have up to 10 books in their own private collection thanks to efforts like this one. “When we talk about health, we’re not just thinking of if the child is sick,” Dr. BrysonBrockmann said. “We want them to be successful in life. Through this program, young patients receive a new book to take home each time they have a check-up at Winthrop.”
Members of the congregation collected more than 100 books for the Reach Out and Read Program. Giving Dr. Bryson-Brockmann the books along with Valentine bookmarks the children made are Beatrice and Magalie Musto from Oceanside. Looking on are senior high school youth members, Avery and Max Benson from Levittown as well as Sean Nanos from Bellmore.
