Souper Success W.T. Clarke Middle School students in the East Meadow School District recently held their annual Soup-er Bowl food drive, collecting more than 100 pounds of nonperishable

food items for Island Harvest, a nonprofit established in 1992 to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. On the day of collection, students were encouraged

to wear their favorite team jersey or Clarke spirit-wear as they donated items such as soup, pasta, cereal and snacks for those in need.

Wantagh High School and Middle School band students attended a performance by the U.S. Air Force Heritage Brass Quintet, who was on tour in the tri-state area. Doug Jones (tuba), Michael Mannella (trombone), Mark Nixon (trumpet), Daniel Omer (French

horn) and Jonathan Rattay (trumpet) played a mix of traditional and jazz music, spoke about their choice of instruments and noted the “form” of each musical number. Horn player Daniel Omer also explained the indispensible goal that military music groups play

in community relations throughout the world. He noted that military musicians offer morale and support to the troops, help to improve the reputation of the U.S. military and provide community outreach in countries where U.S. troops are deployed.

I remember the day like it was yesterday… which is fairly impressive, considering it was actually 17 years ago, to the day in fact. This momentous occasion of which I speak, on March 8th, 2000, was the date I was told by our high school principal that I was, in fact, “officially” the valedictorian of our senior class. I can’t say the news was a complete shock, as we had all been given informal ranks pending the start of the college application process several months prior. At the time, my guidance counselor had informed my parents and I that all paperwork sent out from the administrative offices would name me as “approximately” first, a fact that I had never even thought to consider up until that very moment. I had always enjoyed school and had accumulated a collection of Honors and Advanced Placement classes

on my transcript by my senior year; but class rank was not something I had ever particularly focused my attention on. I knew it existed, obviously; but most colleges were more concerned with your overall GPA and SAT scores, not your comparison among a class of your peers. As I rounded the corner on that afternoon, en route to our “rotunda” outside the cafeteria, I was startled to find the principal seated there next to one of my friends. “Oh good, you’re here,” he said. Uh oh, I thought. My mind raced, trying to determine what I could have done to warrant this unexpected visit. Next to him, my friend had a sly smile on his face. What is this about? I couldn’t imagine. “I have some news,” he grinned, standing up and extending his hand in congratulations. “It’s official – you’re number one.” And there it was. Twelve years of hard work and

dedication, culminating in that moment, that handshake – and those five words. It was unforgettable, so much so that I chose to capture the instant in one of my college scholarship essays. The theme was “The Most Memorable Moment of My Life.” And it was; possibly, still is. The bell rang, signaling it was time to head to our next class. But I had something to do first. I raced over to the wall of payphones by our front entrance, digging for quarters as I ran through the hallway (remember, this was 17 years ago). My hands shaking, I excitedly dialed my home number. “Mom!” I practically squealed into the receiver. “Guess what???” Since then, that date has been ingrained in my mind. Each year, it comes and goes, bringing with it a smile as I recall all the happy memories of a moment that seems so fresh … and yet, so very, very long ago. Officially.

Students at Norman J. Levy Lakeside School in the Merrick School District celebrated World Read Aloud Day on February 16th to take action on behalf of the 758 million people worldwide who cannot read. Throughout the day, students in grades K-6 engaged in literacy

Famous Americans The hallways of Barnum Woods Elementary School in the East Meadow School District were filled with distinguished historical figures, thinkers and inventors as secondgraders marched in the Famous Americans Parade on February 15th. Prior to the celebration, held to honor Presidents Day, the students spent

months researching innovators in American history, learning about their childhood, discoveries and impact upon the world. Among the illustrious individuals were Betsy Ross, Neil Armstrong, John F. Kennedy, Amelia Earhart, Juliette Gordon Low and George Washington. After completing their

research projects, the second-graders created costumes resembling their characters for the school’s Famous Americans Parade, during which they walked the halls and visited other classrooms to present facts about their historical person. Their peers were able to ask questions and guess who the students portrayed.

Cheer Squad Champs The Sanford H. Calhoun High School varsity cheerleaders became Nassau County Champions at the Nassau County Section 8 Championship on February 26th. They had an undefeated season

in the Division 1 Co-Ed category. They will be competing in the New York State Championship on Saturday, March 4th in Syracuse, New York. “We are so proud of the

team and their coaches, Chrissy Meiselas and Crystal Cass for a great fall and winter season and successful competitions this winter,” said Principal Nicole Hollings.

Caught Being Kind Students at Meadowbrook Elementary School in the East Meadow School District exemplified good character by participating in the school’s Random Acts of Kindness Week from February 13th-17th. Students in grades K-5 engaged in activities and

assemblies that modeled kindness and respect. With each day carrying a different theme, they learned about the importance of manners and speaking to others with kind words, took turns on the playground, donated pet supplies to the school’s Kiwanis Kids animal shelter drive and engaged

with fellow students they did not know well. As a visual display of the good deeds happening throughout the week, the students wrote their acts of kindness on paper fish, which were then posted on a “Caught Being Kind” bulletin board in the main lobby.

Special Performance In honor of Valentine’s Day, members of the Students Against Destructive Decisions club at Birch School in the Merrick School District performed a variety of love songs for residents of The Bristal Assisted Living facility in Westbury on February 14th. For over a month, the fifth- and sixth-grade students perfected their routine of friendship and love songs under the guidance of Birch School social worker and SADD adviser Robyn Fruchter.

Along with learning lyrics to songs like “L-O-V-E” by Nat King Cole and “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” by Randy Newman, they also learned dance moves and created handmade props consisting of letters and smiley faces to accompany their performance. In a patriotic gesture, the group concluded their performance by singing “God Bless America” while waving miniature American flags as a tribute to beloved Bristal resident Walter Flahertty. Mr. Flahertty had taught the

members the lyrics to the song during their visit last year. Following their performance, the students enjoyed memorable conversations with the residents as they worked on crafts with them and asked them questions about their lives. The group will be returning in April once again to visit the assisted living community and share reports about what they learned about their new friends from The Bristal.

Mixing It Up East Broadway Elementary School students in the Levittown School District are trying to cross the lines of divide that often occur in lunch rooms across the country. As part of the school’s character education

program, the school hosted Mix It Up at Lunch Day, so that students can make new friends by sitting at new tables in the cafeteria. A starter card, called a joke in your pocket, was given to each student as an icebreaker for conversation

As part of the graduating tradition, sixth-graders at Norman J. Levy Lakeside School in the Merrick School District made more than 2,000 sandwiches for the homeless during the school’s Sandwich-A-Thon on February 17th. In the beginning of the year, the students were asked to bring in donations for the annual event, including bread, zip-close bags and gloves. Sixthgrader Victoria Rickert presented the flyer to the local Stop and Shop where her grandmother works, asking the store for any donations it could provide. cartons of chips and cookies, 84 cases of bottled water and enough cold cuts to foster more than 2,000 sandwiches. Additional donations were provided by local vendors, including hey!cookie bakery in Jericho, which donated more than 700 freshly baked cookies, and Bagel Plaza in Merrick, which provided an assortment of bagels for the cause. On the day of the event, the entire sixthgrade class, along with teachers, administrators and parent volunteers, gathered at the school to assemble the sandwiches. Working in assembly lines,

the students compiled meal boxes containing sandwiches, packages of cookies, chips and bottled water. The sixth-grade faculty, who help organize the event each year, thanked the Class of 2017 for another successful Sandwich-A-Thon. “We are so tremendously proud of you for working together to help your community,” sixth-grade teacher Sue Molloy said to the students. “Always remember that any act of kindness, no matter how small, can have a huge impact on the lives of others.”

A Night for Numbers More than 100 kindergartners participated in engaging, hands-on activities during the North Bellmore School District’s recent Math Family Game Night at Saw Mill Road Elementary School. Open to all kindergartners in the district and their parents or guardians, children rotated among five different stations where they worked on math skills such as place value,

probability, measurement, groups of 10 and odd and even numbers. Children played games with various manipulatives, such as in Slap It, in which they used playing cards to determine odd and even numbers, and Race to 50, an addition game using dice. Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Janet Pollitt and Saw Mill kindergarten teacher Soula Sotirakos organized the event.

Teachers from all five schools ran the stations, and administrators served hot chocolate. Four W.T. Clarke Middle School students in the East Meadow School District have qualified for the New York Regional National History Bee. The school’s qualifiers - seventh-grader James Griesing and eighthgraders Andrew Garces, Nick Spano and Roberto Sison - had taken an inclass written exam on both

U.S. and global history and were among the top 20 highest scorers in the school. Having excelled on the online exam, which was the next step of the competition, they will now advance to the regional finals, to be held in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, on April 21st. At the regional finals, the students will participate in

three rounds of fast-paced and interactive buzzerformat competition against other students in the region to determine who will advance to nationals. The district wishes James, Andrew, Nick and Roberto much success as they move forward in the competition.

Love of Writing Love was in the air in Melissa O’Donnell’s second-grade class at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District on February 14th, when students shared their literary talents for a Writing Review Celebration. Leading up to the event, the students were asked to write a review about their favorite restaurant, book, movie, television show, color, animal or vacation spot. The assignment required them to give five well-thought-out reasons as to why they

considered their selection to be their favorite. They completed the reports with illustrated covers and an author biography page. Reviews covered a range of topics, from cupcakes, The Melting Pot restaurant and Camelback Resort in the Poconos, to “Star Wars” and the book “All the Way to America” by Dan Yaccarino. Family members, teachers and classmates in attendance rotated among the second-graders’ unique written works, leaving positive comments about

them. Afterward, the students continued their observance of Valentine’s Day by creating a heart-shaped book containing some of the things they love. Under the guidance of PTA parents, they cut a stack of folded construction paper to create a full heart that opened like a book. Inside, they wrote about the people and things they love, including their parents, siblings, teachers, friends and pets.

All-County Exhibition The Art Supervisors Association welcomes students, parents, art educators, administrators, and community members to attend the 2017 Nassau All-County Art Exhibition, which will take place on Sunday, March 12th, from noon to 4 p.m. in Roosevelt Hall at Farmingdale State College. This exhibition, with no admission charge, will honor more than 1,200 kindergarten through 12th-grade students who have demonstrated excellence in a wide variety of two-dimensional visual art forms including drawing, painting, printmaking, computer graphics and photography.

Student entries are selected by art educators and are limited to a maximum of three pieces of artwork from each teacher. This year, over 400 art educators from more than 200 schools in 50 Nassau County school districts, will submit student artwork for this prestigious exhibit. “Bellmore-Merrick is proud to announce that it has 53 student-artists whose work will be featured that day,” explained Cheryl Fontana, director of fine & performing arts and adult education. “The Art Supervisors Association is honored to provide this venue that gives

our community the opportunity to appreciate the creativity, imagination, and skill that is produced by a fundamental, innovative, and vibrant K-12 sequential visual arts education.” One of the ASA goals is to nurture young artists and for the ninth consecutive year, ASA will present scholarships to one outstanding graduating senior from every member high school in a special Scholarship Awards Ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. immediately preceding the noon opening of the exhibit.

Scientific Method The scientific method was clearly on display during Shore Road School’s fifth-grade science fair in the school gymnasium in Bellmore. The fair encouraged students to apply curricular knowledge as they designed experiments on various topics of interest. In addition, John F. Kennedy High School science research students spoke with many

of the student-scientists about their research and experiments. “Students are the ultimate scientists in that they perform the research and the experiments themselves,” science consultant Brian Wallrapp said. “The fair is also an opportunity for students to learn something they did not previously know and to encourage students to become excited about

science.” In accordance with the scientific method, participants identified a problem, formulated a hypothesis and developed a method to facilitate their experiment. After the experiments were conducted, the students collected data to document their results, analyzed their findings and drew academically sound conclusions.

Donating Pennies Meadowbrook and Parkway elementary schools in the East Meadow School District raised more than $5,000 collectively for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through their respective Pennies for Patients fundraisers. During the threeweek fundraisers, which were conducted under the guidance of Daniela Murphy, the social worker at both schools, students in grades K-5 were asked to donate spare change and create collection boxes so

that their friends, families and neighbors would donate as well. At the end of each school day, students sent their donations to the main office, where Ms. Murphy tallied each grade’s daily contribution. Meadowbrook surpassed its goal and accumulated a total of $3,060 – the largest donation ever raised for Pennies for Patients in school history. Parkway exceeded its objective, accruing a total of $2,000. Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Campaign

Specialist Alexa Landro visited the schools on February 15th to accept the total donation of $5,060. She thanked the students for their generous contribution and explained that their donations will assist in finding cures and improving the quality of life for cancer patients and their families. Since 2007, both schools have raised more than $20,000 each for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Gift of a Good Book

Through their collaborative efforts, the entire fourth grade at Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District held a book drive that yielded more than 300 books for pediatric patients at Nassau University Medical Center.

Before the collection began, the students created flyers, delivered morning announcements and visited classrooms explaining the purpose of the drive, which was to collect gently used or new books for children at NUMC and their families.

Linda Walsh, the NUMC executive director for the NuHealth Foundation, visited the school on Feb. 17 to accept the numerous boxes of donations and thank the fourth-graders for improving the lives of patients with the gift of a good book.

The Long Island volunteer committee attended The Fresh Air Fund’s annual Friendly Towns Leadership Conference from Friday, February 3rd through Sunday, February 5th at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. Inspector Morales shared with the close to 300 volunteers in attendance how The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program greatly impacted his life. The closing ceremony included inspiring remarks by Fresh Air siblings and concluded with a spectacular performance by the Bronx Theatre High School Step Team. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from

low-income communities since 1877. First time Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from seven to 12 years old, who live in New York City. Prestigious Grant Awarded the only library sciences school in that area to be admitted into membership in the prestigious iSchools Consortium. “Long Island University is proud to partner our nationally recognized Palmer School with the resources of the Robert David Lion Gardner Foundation to help preserve Long Island’s history,” said LIU President Dr. Kimberly R. documents currently held by historical societies across Long Island, with a particular emphasis on Suffolk County. LIU will showcase these documents at an annual Gardiner Symposium, while promoting year-round visibility of these historical societies. The project will be led by Dr. Gregory Hunter, Professor of Library and Information Science who heads the doctoral program at the Palmer School. Dr. Hunter is a nationally recognized

Foundation will help preserve Long Island’s history and also ensure that the next generation of archival professionals has the skills to preserve history in the digital age.” The grant includes significant scholarship support for masters and Ph.D. students at the Palmer School, in addition to opportunities for longterm fieldwork placement that benefit both the historical societies and Palmer School students. “The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation’s
