They counted by 10s to create beaded necklaces, penned answers to the statement “I Wish I Had 100…” and designed “100 Day of School” crowns. Carrying the theme over to their wardrobe, they embodied the fashion of centenarians, wearing suspenders, hair rollers, mustaches and glasses. First-grade classes at the

100 Days Wiser school also got in on the fun. They sported T-shirts that they had personalized by gluing 100 items, such as Legos, birthday candles, Popsicle sticks and stickers on them. They also wrote reasons why they love first grade on small paper hearts, and then arranged them on a banner to form the number 100.

Attention Parents

Parents who have a child/ children residing in the Levittown School District and have attained the age of four years on or before December 1st, 2018 are invited to apply for admission, on behalf of their child, to the Universal Pre-Kindergarten Program during the 2018-2019 school year. The program is a half-day program which will be housed at one of our UPK providers beginning in September 2018 for 180 days through June 2019, roughly coinciding with the Levittown School District calendar. The program has limited space and participants will be chosen during a random lottery selection process. A waiting list will be established to fill any vacancies that may arise. All students must be potty trained by the start of school in September 2018. If you are interested, please visit our website at www. levittownschools.com and follow the link indicated to fill in all the information. The interest form must be submitted online no later than March 2nd, 2018. You will receive a confirmation email that it was received and then receive notification of when the drawing is being held. You do not need to be present during the drawing. Those selected in the random

lottery process will be notified by email and receive a district registration packet, in the mail, in order for placement to be finalized. This program is fully funded by a New York State Department of Education

Exploring Ecosystems As part of the study on ecosystems, fifth-graders in Margaret Gallagher’s class at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District created models of real live ponds.

During the science investigation, students observed the ways in which organisms live and survive in their ecosystems by interacting with living and non-living elements. The children created

ecosystems in clear plastic soda bottles using sand, small rocks, water, Elodea plants and snails. They studied the snails for seven days and learned about the differences between consumers and producers.

Animal Show and Tell A snake, a tortoise and insects were guests in a first-grade classroom at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District on February 16th. New York City science teacher Steven Lebowitz visited Melissa McCabe’s class to show off some of his creatures. At Saw Mill, parents are often invited in to share their expertise, and Mr. Lebowitz’s animal

presentation delighted his son Jared and his classmates. He introduced children to Popcorn the corn snake and Dash the turtle, as well as a leopard gecko and Madagascar hissing cockroaches. Mr. Lebowitz talked to the students about the animals, their life cycles and their habitats, and discussed the differences between predators and prey. Students were able to touch some of the

creatures. The presentation served as an introduction to the animal unit in science. Ms. McCabe explained that throughout the year students have been learning to think and act like scientists, which includes research and observation. Children were also able to make connections to their nonfiction writing pieces, as many chose a specific animal to write about.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders and local village government. They begin the day early, picking up and delivering food donations. The food is then stored, sorted and prepared for the chefs. Volunteers set up, serve and clean after mealtimes. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders

and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup Kitchen announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation, named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become selfsustaining with a solid foundation of local community support. As they enter this exciting phase, the new corporation will serve our neighbors in the same caring tradition that has been the hallmark of these soup kitchens. Welcome Friends has independently met the challenge to become selfsustaining to ensure that guests need not fear the loss of meals. Under the leadership of the Executive Committee and Kitchen Coordinators, volunteers create a sense of community for neighbors affected by hunger and poverty by serving them with dignity and respect in a safe welcoming environment. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer! Celebrating 100 As students entered Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center, they were welcomed with balloons and congratulatory remarks from faculty and staff, as is the school’s tradition on the 100th day of the school year. Dressed as 100-yearolds, the students marched into the auditorium to celebrate the occasion with song and exercise to match the Bellmore School District’s 2017-2018 theme of “Mind, Body, Heart.”

“Not only are the students educationally smarter, they are also more physically fit,” said Principal Patricia Castine. “The students are really meeting the challenges this year of becoming Bellmore ‘rising stars.’” During the assembly, the students counted to 100 by ones, fives and 10s while exercising. They jumped rope 100 times with physical education teacher Elia Deblasio, sang the “100th Day of School” song,

counted to 100 by 10s on the Math & Movement mat and answered questions related to the number 100. They also talked to peers about their favorite activity during the first 100 days of school. After the assembly, the students returned to their classrooms where they participated in additional 100th day English language arts and math activities and searched for 100 site words throughout the school.

Elementary Celebration Elementary school students throughout the Wantagh School District celebrated their first 100 days of school with English language arts, mathematics and art activities. Many of the students at Forest Lake, Mandalay and Wantagh elementary schools showed their enthusiasm for this

momentous occasion by decorating their T-shirts with 100 items, and some of the younger kindergarten students dressed as 100-year-olds. Student Recognized

Aashini Shah, a senior W.T. Clarke High School in the East Meadow School District, was recognized as a runner-up in the Altice Connects Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Contest. Per contest rules, Shah had to write a 500-word essay about a Latino she would choose to spend the day with and explain her

decision. She wrote about physicist Theodore Taylor and his impact on nuclear weaponry. In the late 1940s, Taylor was a prominent nuclear weapon designer who later in life became a nuclear disarmament advocate advising the threat of nuclear terrorism and the risk of nuclear power. Inspired by his work and ethical reasoning,

Shah would have liked to spend the day with Taylor to discuss today’s current issues with nuclear weaponry and applaud his impact on society. In late January, Altice Public Affairs Manager Kristen Thurber presented Shah with a certificate and an iPad for her essay.

Wantagh’s Mandalay Elementary School’s motto for the month of February is to “Be kind to everyone, even yourself.” This theme was highlighted throughout the week of February 12th-16th as the students celebrated Kindness Week with a host of activities to drive home this important message. On February 12th, the students attended a “Cultivating Kindness” assembly with motivational

speaker Rich Specht, who explained how his son’s tragic accident was the impetus for spreading kindness. He explained that kindness is like a seed that we can cultivate through various altruistic deeds and then challenged the students to go out and change the world. “Kindness is the greatest superpower we have,” Mr. Specht told the students. “You have this superpower, and for every action there

is a reaction.” Other activities during the week included attendance at the My Face assembly, the speaker having the same condition as character Auggie in R.J. Palacio’s book “Wonder.” Students were strongly encouraged to be kind to others with disabilities and deformities. Students also collected donations for the local animal shelters.

Barking in the New Year English Language Learners and third-grade students at Meadowbrook Elementary School, in the East Meadow School District, celebrated the Chinese New Year on February 12th, by immersing themselves in traditions associated with the holiday and leading a schoolwide Lunar New Year parade through the hallways. To put context to the celebration, students learned some of the history behind the Chinese New

Year by reading stories, taking part in musical and dance ensembles, and learning phrases like “gung hay fat choy,” which translates to “may you become prosperous.” ELL students prepared for the festivities by creating Chinese noisemakers in the traditional colors of red and gold, fashioning dragon puppets to ward off evil spirits, and constructing an origami dog, in honor of this year’s animal on the Chinese zodiac. They

also embellished their classrooms with customary decorations and listened to traditional Chinese music to create an authentic atmosphere. The festive props were used to lead the entire third-grade class in a parade through the building. The procession was made complete with a dragon that the thirdgraders had designed using cardboard boxes, streamers, pipe cleaners and paint.

Regional Spelling Bee Wantagh Middle School eighth-grader Paige Treiland was one of 130 students in grades 4-8 who competed for the title of top speller during the 2018 Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee, held on February 11th at Hofstra University. Paige survived four rounds of the highly competitive contest, which is the official regional competition for the Scripps National Spelling Bee, to take place

in Washington, D.C. in May. Paige began her spelling bee journey as a member of the school’s Spelling Bee Club, under the direction of adviser Christine Hult. Paige won the club’s spelling bee competition and headed to Hofstra, where she joined students from Nassau and Suffolk counties on Feb. 4, who took a qualifying test for the regional contest. Paige was in the top third of student-

scorers invited back for the oral spell down and was eventually eliminated with the misspelling of the word “mahout.” Paige said she prepared for the competition by studying the roots of words and through practice with her mother. When asked if she had any advise for future competitors, she said, “Definitely don’t get too nervous and think it (spelling of the word) through.”

Wrestling Commendation During the Wantagh School District’s February 15th Board of Education meeting, New York State Sen. John Brooks presented a proclamation to members of the Wantagh High School wrestling

team, congratulating the student-athletes for having been named the first New York State Division I Dual Meet Champions. Earlier this month, the Warriors and coach Paul Gillespie received the

designation from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association after having defeated Minisink Valley Central School District, 37-28, at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena.

Health & Safety Week

A Bellmore School District premise is that proper exercise and nutrition are paramount to a student’s ability to learn and are equally important to academics. This was evident in Winthrop Avenue School’s Health and Safety Week when students took a closer look at ways to make their bodies healthy and strong. The week of February 12th-16th commenced with a visit from dentist

Dr. Matthew Siegel, who provided tips for keeping teeth strong and cavityfree. The school hosted a workshop on healthy eating habits and The Magic of Five a Day: Good Nutrition and Healthy Eating assembly where students learned about the power of food in conjunction to their health and their ability to learn. School social worker Christine Davison also held workshops on stress

reduction, while students additionally learned about ways to be safe on the internet and off the school campus from Police Officer Monez. The week ended with a pedometer class challenge in which students were provided pedometers to wear. Their steps were added up at the end of the day and the class that accumulated the most steps was the winner.

Musings on March In like a lion… so blow the winds of March, and with them, promises of springtime blossoms nurtured by the warmth of the sun. But until then, we must contend with the last of winter’s storms, cold and rainy as they may be. Seems to be a metaphor for life as a whole, this month of transition which ushers us out of the doldrums of our hibernation into newfound energy and possibility. Of course, change is not necessarily seasonal, nor is it always dictated by Mother Nature, but the symbolism holds true nonetheless. Being of Irish descent, one of the more notable milestones has always been St. Patrick’s Day; however, upon visiting the Emerald Isle several years back, I was

intrigued to learn that the date holds little significance for those who reside across the Atlantic. The celebration which ensues on the main streets of many cities in America is, in fact, unique to the great U.S. of A. While spring officially arrives in just about two weeks, I have always associated the beginning of the season with the arrival of the Easter bunny and all the pastel decor it brings. Once April gets underway, it’s a fast track to warmer days ahead, afternoons spent soaking up the sun on the beach and summer concerts under the stars. But I digress. March, the month of tumult and turmoil, fading out into the serenity of spring. So it flows, and with

Studying Local Landmarks From the Brooklyn Bridge to the Montauk Lighthouse, fourthgraders at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District learned about the various landmarks that dot Long Island. Students had to research well-known places on the

island, which included Brooklyn and Queens in addition to Nassau and Suffolk counties. Among the spots chosen were Jones Beach, Belmont Park, Sagamore Hill, MacArthur Airport and the big duck in Flanders. The fourth-grade social studies curriculum

focused on local history. The landmarks activity culminated with each student making a physical presentation. They built models, created posterboard displays and make PowerPoint presentations and videos.

Expanding the Pantry The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s food pantry, dubbed the Community Cupboard, has recently expanded – both in size and service. They are now serving more than 40 local families bi-weekly and have added shelving and increased available donations. A volunteer effort on

February 10th centered on an expansion of space and reorganization of donations. “It is amazing that our Cupboard has expanded in our short year-and-a-half. It is a true community effort,” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mara Bollettieri, who also serves as co-organizer. Additionally, students

and staff from Sanford H. Calhoun High School recently started a new community service-based club called Cluboard, that will serve and benefit the Community Cupboard. Assistant Principal Mark Melkonian is the adviser. For more information about the Cupboard, call 516.992.1073.

Celebrating Mardi Gras

Denise Schleith’s seventhand eighthgrade French classes at Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Merrick Avenue Middle School recently celebrated Mardi Gras. Seventh-graders enrolled in the French class made Mardi Gras masks and learned about the history of Mardi Gras and its celebrations in

various French-speaking countries, islands and in New Orleans. Student volunteers made “King Cakes,” traditional cakes eaten during Mardi Gras, decorated with the colors representing Mardi Gras: purple, green and gold. Eighth-graders in the French class continued their tradition from last year. As the tradition goes,

the students who received the “baby” in their piece of cake the previous year would receive good luck for that year, and bring the “King Cake” the following year. All students also received beads with Mardi Gras colors for answering questions about Mardi Gras and French culture.

More than Pennies The student body at Parkway Elementary School, in the East Meadow School District, came together for a noble cause and broke a school record. The Parkway School raised $3,500 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through their Pennies for Patients fundraiser. During the three-week fundraiser, conducted under the guidance of

school social worker Daniela Murphy, students in grades K-5 were asked to donate spare change and create collection boxes so that friends, families and neighbors could donate as well. At the end of every school day, students sent their donations to the main office, where Ms. Daniela Murphy tallied each grade’s daily contribution.

Parkway surpassed its goal by $1,000, resulting in the largest donation ever raised for Pennies for Patients in the school’s history. Mrs. Aimee DePaulo’s first-grade class raised the most out of the entire school with a total of $327.80. The class received a special party for their hard work and dedication to helping the community.

Advancing to Finals Two seniors from General Douglas MacArthur High School in the Levittown Public Schools recently qualified as finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Jared Schwartz and Helen Zhang will continue on in the competition with the hopes of receiving one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million offered this spring. Both Schwartz and Zhang are among

15,000 of the 16,000 semifinalists in the competition to receive the finalist title. To become a finalist, Schwartz and Zhang submitted a detailed scholarship application, providing information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, their leadership abilities, employment and honors and awards that they have received. All finalists will be considered for National

Merit Scholarships. Dan Shafran, a senior at John F. Kennedy High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central School District, placed fourth at the New York State Wrestling Championships on February 24th-25th.

“This was the highest place finish for a JFK wrestler since Nick Laurino in 2006,” said coach Brian DeGaetano. Shafran finished the season with a 42-5 record, which was a significant

improvement from his record last year. He started wrestling in his junior year last season and wrestled mostly junior varsity and had a 5-7 record on varsity.

Senior Recognized

General Douglas MacArthur High School senior Helen Zhang from the Levittown Public Schools was selected as a 2018 Presidential Scholar candidate in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program from the United States Department of Education. Zhang joins MacArthur High School senior Christian Hernandez, also a candidate in the program, for his accomplishments in the Career and Technical Education field at Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 to recognize and honor some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors

for high school students. Candidacy is based on outstanding performance on the ACT Assessment or the College Board SAT and nominations. Zhang has displayed her strong academic skills throughout her high school career. She challenges herself each year with Advanced Placement exams and has received scores of 98 or higher on all her regents and final grades. “Helen Zhang is unlike any student I have worked with over my 15-year career as a High School Counselor,” said guidance counselor Stacy Phillips. “Helen’s ability to see beyond the text, beyond the questions and the simple answers is quite frankly put remarkable. Her memory and attention to detail is unmatched by any student I have ever worked with.”

In addition to her academic achievements, Zhang is also heavily involved in her school community. Among her many extracurricular activities, she collects recyclables throughout the school, participates in the school musical’s pit orchestra and is a valued member of MacArthur’s Science Olympiad team and Science Research program. “By being designated a candidate for the Presidential Scholars Program, this is just another feather in her cap,” said Principal Joseph Sheehan. “Aside from her plethora of amazing accomplishments throughout her academic career, what’s even more impressive is her modesty, compassion and desire to be successful both in school and within the community. Sandwichathon As part of their annual service learning project, approximately 85 sixthgraders, along with staff from Levy Lakeside School in Merrick, dedicated time during their day to make and pack more than 3,000 cold cut sandwiches to feed families in need. The sandwiches were donated to the River Fund, a mobile food pantry that fights hunger in dozens of New York City neighborhoods. For a little more than an hour, the Lakeside cafeteria resembled an assembly line of focused philanthropic scholars and staff hustling to get these sandwiches ready for distribution. But it wasn’t just the sweat

and manpower that they provided: students and staff themselves donated turkey, cheese, ham and bread cold cuts and bread for the sandwiches. The Lakeside PTA chipped in with 100 pounds of cold cuts as well. Local businesses also stepped up, as Stop and Shop donated 210 loaves of bread, 250 pounds of cold cuts, zip lock baggies, 24 cases of chips and a pallet of water. Hey! Cookie donated 46 dozen large chocolate chip cookies, while Spiga Bakery, Suburbia Prime Meats, Town Bagel and Wonder Bread also made significant contributions to the cause. According to sixth-

grade teacher and project coordinator Susan Molloy, the idea was born seven years ago from a single Lakeside student who wanted to do something special for the homeless on her birthday. Other Lakeside students heard about the effort and were inspired to help out. “Given the size of the school’s student body, we decided to create our own ‘Sandwichathon’ project,” said Molloy. “Each year the effort grows and donations increase, giving more of our students the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.”

State Wrestling Champs Wantagh High School wrestler Jonathan Loew earned the title of New York State Champion during the New York State Public High School Athletic Association finals, held at Times-Union Center in Albany on February 24th. The 195-pound, nationally ranked senior will continue his wrestling career at Cornell University this fall. It has been a season of accolades as Loew recently earned his 200th career win during the Clarke Duals, held at W.T. Clarke High School in East Meadow on December 28th. Only 14 wrestlers

in Long Island history have reached the 200-win record. He also assisted in his team’s winning of the first Division I Dual Meet Championship. On January 13th, Jonathan also placed second in the Eastern States Classic. Jonathan started his career as a 99-pound seventh-grader, under coach Paul Gillespie. During his six seasons with the Warriors, he has acquired AllCounty designations in grades 8-11, an All-State designation in 11th-grade, as well as the title of AllAmerican as a junior. Last

season, Jonathan placed fourth in the National High School Coaches Association National Wrestling Championships in Virginia Beach in April, and also won the Journeyman Fall Classic. During the offseason, he wrestles with his brothers and trains at Vougars’s Honors Wrestling Club in Syosset. Loew said, “It has been great being a part of a winning team throughout my career in Wantagh. I couldn’t have asked for better teammates.”

The variety of badges allow scouts to explore different areas such as sports, crafts, science, trades, business and future careers. During his Boy Scout career, Mauro has earned his Arrow of Light ranking, became certified as a Leave No Trace Trainer and was a

National Youth Leadership Training participant. “It’s a great sense of accomplishment knowing all the hard work I had to do to get here,” he said. “It was great to finish but I just want to find the next challenge and keep going.” Mauro continues to have a close bond with the Boy Scouts of America. He has served as a member of the Theodore Roosevelt Council’s Boy Scout Resident Camp, Onteora Scout Reservation, for the past 4 years and currently serves as his Troop’s Junior Assistant Scoutmaster and as the Order of the Arrow, Buckskin Lodge Chief. “I’d like to say that our engagement story was picture-perfect but, the truth is our engagement was as real life as it gets. Kurt was coming over and, on his way in, he gave me a package from “outside” that he said must had been delivered. I didn’t think too much of it; I figured it was something I had ordered for Christmas. I opened it up and there was a box of Lucky Charms with a very legitimate looking letterhead. It said that I was a winner of their “Marshmallows Only” contest, which I had entered religiously over past few months since their promotion started. I was so excited that I put down the letter before I finished reading it, and took out two bowls for him and I to enjoy. A few minutes passed and he asked me if I read the letter and I answered him “yes” - but the truth is I didn’t. I was too involved in my marshmallow winnings to be concerned about the invoice. He picked it up and said to me that I won a prize. I answered him, “Of course I won a prize, we are eating it! Marshmallows are the best prize ever!” I took the letter from him and finished reading it. It said “Congratulations Ms. Titcomb! Please take the prize at the bottom of the box as a token of our appreciation!” I reached in the box and pulled out a little blue velvet box, and when I turned around, he was down on one knee and asked me for my hand in marriage. I was so surprised I wanted to scream with joy, but I still had a mouthful of marshmallows and started to choke a little bit. He asked me if I was okay and to please not throw up on him. I was finally able to stop coughing and he looked up at me - still down on one knee because I had forgotten to answer him! I finally realized and said, “Yes, 100 million times, YES!” He got up and we kissed and I was crying tears of pure joy! I realized he had painstakingly hand-picked out hundreds of marshmallows over weeks and weeks to give me the absolute sweetest, thoughtful engagement I could have ever imagined. It may not have been picture-perfect for everyone, but it couldn’t have been more perfect for us. Sometimes things don’t always go exactly as planned, but with a little bit of luck and a heart filled with love, memories like this will surely be cherished forever!”
