Happy St. Patrick’s Day
Sunday, March 17th The Legend of The Shamrock
Good St. Patrick traveled far to teach God’s Holy Word, and when he came to Erin’s sod, a wonderous thing occurred... He plucked a shamrock from the earth and held it in his hand, to symbolize the Trinity that all might understand... the first leaf for the Father, and the second for the Son, the third leaf for the Holy Spirit - Three of Them in One.

Fixed Rate CD offer available in AL, AZ, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NM, NV, NY, PA, SC and VA. Portfolio by Wells Fargo® customers are eligible to receive an additional interest rate bonus on these accounts.3 1. To qualify for this offer, you must have a new or existing Platinum Savings account and enroll the account in this offer between 01/21/2019 and 03/22/2019. This offer is subject to change at any time, without notice. This offer is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NY, SC and VA. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 2.08% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money (from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., or its affiliates) to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the term of this offer. The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.10%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000 minimum, the Special Rate will not apply and the interest rate will revert to the standard interest rate applicable to your Platinum Savings account. As of 12/10/2018, the standard interest rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NY, SC and VA with an account balance of $0.01 to $99,999.99 is 0.03% (0.03% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, standard interest rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. Offer not available to Private Banking, Wealth, Business Banking or Wholesale customers. 2. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 01/21/2019 and 03/22/2019. The 11-month New Dollar CD special requires a minimum of $25,000 brought to Wells Fargo from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank N.A., or its affiliates to earn the advertised APY. Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A fee for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the Special Rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. Due to the new money requirement, accounts may only be opened at your local branch. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Offer cannot be combined with any other consumer deposit offer. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed. © 2019 Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. Catching Up with Oscar & Emmy Winning Actress Regina King By Allison Kugel
With an acting career spanning four decades and multiple awards, Regina King has effortlessly embodied countless memorable characters across the big and small screens. From thought provoking films like Boyz n the Hood, Poetic Justice, Jerry Maguire and Ray; to lighter fare like the Legally Blonde and Miss Congeniality franchises, Regina King brings a sparkle to every role she’s tackled. On the small screen, King’s presence in past television series like Southland, The Boondocks, The Leftovers, Shameless, and her Emmy-winning turn in American Crime, have highlighted some of the more significant social issues of our time. Wherever art is imitating life in a significant way, Regina King has been tapped to play a pivotal role in the project.
NASSAU ZONE 1 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY MARCH 6, 2019 • www.southbaysneighbor.com
On February 24th, King took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her stand-out role in the critically acclaimed film, If Beale Street Could Talk, now playing in theaters. Prior to the Academy Awards, Regina King and I discussed her Emmy-winning role as Latrice Butler, the grieving mother of a teenage son who is the victim of a death by auto hit and run perpetrated by a group of Jersey City police officers. Allison Kugel: What drew you to playing Latrice Butler in Seven Seconds? Regina King: I was drawn to the role of [prosecutor] KJ Harper (played by Clare-Hope Ashitey), and [series creator] Veena Sud was sure that she wanted me for the role of Latrice. I liked the pilot script and decided to take that dive into the emotional pool. Allison Kugel: You play the mother
of a teenage boy who is killed by a police officer. What was your process in tackling this role? Regina King: Being a mother myself, and the mother of a black young man, there are certain fears you have that are unique to having a black child in America. You have fears as a parent when your kids are growing up, because you can’t control everything. But there are those experiences that are specific to black children that are not the same for others. You experience a bit of it, yourself, as a child growing up in America. You then carry that perspective with you throughout your life. So, I had that going into this role. I also spoke to a mother whose son was murdered by a police officer. Hearing her pain up close and personal, and her feeling safe enough to share it with me, I would say that combination was how Latrice was birthed. Allison Kugel: Is the story a fictional account or based on true events? Regina King: It was based on the truth as far as the regard for black American kids and the law, and how they are regarded in America. That part of it is true, of course. So many examples have had similar outcomes to this story, but it was not taken from one specific person’s story. Allison Kugel: Do you think a series like Seven Seconds has the power to impact hearts and minds for societal change? Regina King: I think [so]. What’s reflective for me is not reflective for you. Seeing it in a television show or in a movie creates an opportunity for each of us to see the other’s perspective. I feel that the series American Crime (the ABC series for which King won an Emmy) was very similar in that way. Allison Kugel: Do you take a role like this home with you? Regina King: I tried not to take it home with me. But again, a bit of this lives with you. It is the narrative of a part of the fabric of what America is. It took a lot out of me; I’ll be honest. It was the closest to an experiential role I’ve ever had. I’ve known people who have been victims of police brutality, but no one who was closer than a friend or a distant family member. Because it was a friend or a distant family member, I wasn’t with them in their day-to-day struggle of what that experience brings. You go through life hoping that you never personally have an experience like that, but you know that the odds are greater than
not that you will, because of who you are. Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about your 2nd Emmy win for the Netflix limited series, Seven Seconds. In recent years, you are winning awards left and right? How does each time feel? Regina King: All three times being nominated felt different. But there is nothing like the first anything, right? It’s totally surreal. The second time is kind of like, “Nah-uh, really?! How did I find a hundred-dollar bill again in the exact same place?!” It’s one of those feelings. Not to be frivolous about it, but it’s like, what are the odds? Allison Kugel: What do you see as your higher purpose in all that you do, from parenting your son to your work. And what spiritual philosophy do you subscribe to? Regina King: Overall, just trying to walk in my truth. I recently did a panel talk (Entertainment Weekly’s Women Who Kick Ass Comic Con Panel) and [actress] Chloe Bennet said something that I definitely subscribe to. She said, “At this moment in time, I can feel a certain way and say a certain thing, and then in 2022 I might contradict that, just because I’m in a different place at that point.” For me, I can only be in my truth right now, in this moment. If I am walking in that truth, if I share an opinion right now about something, in the year 2022 I will not say, “I didn’t say that back then.” I would know I said it, because in that moment it was true for me. Allison Kugel: Right. You would say, that was me then. I saw this beautiful tribute on your Instagram feed to actress Marla Gibbs. Marla gave you your first big job playing her daughter on the show 227 in the 1980s, when you were fourteen years old. You thanked her for all that she did for you as your mentor. You say, among many other things, “She taught me how to be a professional.” I want to ask you about some other influential people you’ve worked with over the years, and what your takeaway was from working with these people. Let’s start with Tupac Shakur, who you worked with in 1993’s Poetic Justice. Regina King: I would say he’s a man that walked in his truth. Man, did he ever! That would be the biggest takeaway, in that he was just unapologetic, and it was beautiful.
Allison Kugel: And working with Tom Cruise in 1996’s Jerry Maguire? Regina King: An example of a consummate professional. If you hear anybody say that they don’t like that guy, hmmm, I don’t know. I’d have to go back and look in the books on that person. He’s a good guy, and he is a professional. He is that same example of what Marla [Gibbs] was, and I saw from him that it exists when you’re on that mega level. Allison Kugel: And working with Jamie Foxx in 2004’s Ray? Regina King: Jamie is super talented. The first thing that came to my mind when you said “Jamie,” is that he’s a caring guy. He takes great care with things that he does, and with the people that he works with. That’s the reason why he’s so good at embodying a character, because he takes care with the details. Allison Kugel: I also came across a picture you posted with your son. You were waiting in line together to vote in the June 2018 primaries, and it was his first time voting. Finish this sentence for me: “I hope that in my son’s lifetime…” Regina King: The first thing that came to my mind is that he wants to have children, but he goes back and forth between asking if it’s irresponsible to bring children into this world or not. And I see where he is coming from with that. Allison Kugel: Tell him that you have great faith in the next generation to lift the consciousness of this planet. Regina King: Oh, I tell him that all the time, that I have great faith in him and his generation. Literally, from year to year with the conversations that we have, it goes from, “When I have kids,” to, “Man, I don’t know if I want to bring a kid into all this.” Just because of certain things that happen in the world. It’s the same reason you
don’t want to turn on the news half the time. Allison Kugel: If there’s one thing the kids from Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida showed me, it’s that with the younger generations coming up, there is a different level of consciousness, and it gives me great hope. Regina King: What I love is that they’re able to articulate their passion in a way that is open. Whereas, I feel like a lot of our generation, we weren’t able to articulate our anger as effectively. There is a maturity present with the younger generation, but they still have that passion. It makes me more confident in what they can accomplish. Used Car Buying Online (NAPSI)—A recent study by Interactive Advertising Bureau shows that 96 percent of consumers begin their car search online. In fact, millennials spend as much as 12 to 13 hours researching cars online before making the decision to buy. Buying a used car requires even more research and there are lots of places online to do so. Here are four points to help you avoid wasting
time. 1. Know what you want. Have a budget and clear idea of the type of car that’s right for you first. Use online reviews, too. Getting pulled off track will overcomplicate things. 2. Where you shop can be just as important as what you buy. Choose reputable websites and dealerships where vehicle history information is readily available. 3. Get a good handle on
Stop Roof Streaks
what the car you’re looking at is worth. That way, you’ll know when a bargain looks too good to be true. 4. Find the cars you want and avoid the ones you don’t by starting your search using vehicle history at Carfax.com. Choose 1-Owner, no reported accidents and more, plus every car there comes with a free Carfax Report.
(NAPSI)—If you ever see black or other colored streaks on your roof, your problem is more than looks-but it can be resolved. What It Is Those streaks come from vegetation eating the mineral content of your shingles. The vegetation is literally eating your roof for lunch. Not taken care of, it will shorten the life of
your roof dramatically. What To Do Fortunately, there are inexpensive, easy-to-apply cleaners that can remove this unwanted vegetation. Too Many Walls By: CIP
If walls could feel, would they smile inside The day you came home in this world alive If walls could feel, would they watch so in-depth The moment you took your very first step If walls could feel, would they rejoice and play At each birthday, every candle blown away If walls could feel, would they not want to joke That night you came home and your heart was broke If walls could feel, would they be so pleased Of every accomplishment and thing you achieved If walls could feel, would they shed a tear As you planned your wedding and the day drew near If walls could feel, would it be so exquisite All the times you came home for a surprise visit If walls could feel, would they mourn the loss Of the matriarch and this ill-begotten cross

The Charity of the Month for March is: Birthday Wishes!
It’s not every day that you come across a group of people who are so selfless and who work tirelessly to give others the opportunity to have something that isn’t even a necessity. I happened to come across passionate and compassionate people like this and knew I had to feature what they do! Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. They improve and empower the lives of homeless children and their families by providing joy, play and hope through the magic of a birthday party.
program is their On-Site Party Program, which provides monthly parties at the shelters they serve and this celebrates all children with birthdays in that month. The second program is their Birthday-in-a-Box Program, which provides a party packed into a birthday box, which is delivered to families in domestic violence and scattered sites. In 2018, Birthday Wishes of Long Island served 669 girls and 619 boys with more than 6,500 homemade cupcakes, more than 6,000 goody bags, 1,200 craft and activity kits, 7,728 gifts wrapped and delivered and more than 1,100 Birthday-ina-Box Kits built by volunteers.
Most people are so fortunate that they don’t even think twice about celebrating their birthday with gifts and a birthday cake; they just assume that will happen every birthday! But for some families, a birthday party is a luxury that they simply cannot afford. On their birthday, some children may not expect any gifts and cannot imagine their name on a birthday cake with brightly lit colorful candles just for them. This is where Birthday Wishes steps in!
All of their birthday parties are run by carefully trained and backgroundchecked volunteers, who participate as individuals, families and groups. Their grassroots philosophy fosters the spirit of volunteerism and community service in adults, children and families, who donate their time and resources! Birthday Wishes is the first organization in the entire nation, and the only one on Long Island, to provide this invaluable service.
Birthday Wishes began in Massachusetts and after the first national news story released featuring Birthday Wishes, a social worker from Long Island was so inspired that she contact the co-founder to bring the joy of a birthday party to the homeless community here on Long Island. Birthday Wishes of Long Island began having parties in one shelter, and today they work with 80 shelters/transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Each month they give more than 120 children a birthday celebration!
A great way to support Birthday Wishes is to attend or sponsor their 2nd annual Food, Wine, & Wishes Event on March 20th at Appliance World of Huntington. This is a fun evening of chef tastings from top Long Island restaurants, as well as terrific silent auctions and over 75 raffles. To purchase tickets, please visit www.LongIsland.BirthdayWishes.org/ Food-Wine-Wishes. Tickets are $60.00 per person and sponsorship opportunities are available. Feel free to call their office at (516) 390-3505 for additional information.
Each birthday child receives supplies to have a party with all the children that live in the shelter, such as juice boxes, cake or cupcakes, candles, decorations, paper good and yes, a wonderful bag of presents to open! Birthday Wishes serves children ages 1-19. This organization provides birthday parties through two programs. One

By Helene Kolotkin of Deer Park Helene Kolotkin of Deer Park enjoys making her Peach Crisp recipe as winter begins to give way to the beginning of the spring season. According to Helene, "The recipe was given to me by a neighbor of mine who moved to Long Island from California, so I guess you could say this recipe originated on the west coast." Once spring rolls around, Helene knows it's time to start making her Peach Crisp. "It's my offiical marker that spring is right around the corner, and it's one of my favorite desserts!" Helene recommends serving her Peach Crisp warm, with vanilla ice cream. What You Will Need 4-6 cups peeled and sliced peaches 1 cup flour 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 tspn nutmeg
1/4 tspn salt 1/2 tspn cinnamon 1/2 cup butter 2 tbsp water grated rind and juice of 1/2 a lemon Preparation Mix flour, sugars, nutmeg, salt and cinnamon. Mix in butter with a fork until coarse crumbs are formed. Place peaches in a greased 9x9 baking dish. Cover fruit mixture with crumbs and pat down. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Then uncover, and bake for another 30 minutes until top is browned. Serve and Enjoy!
Most FedEx envelopes are made from 100 percent recycled content. All FedEx boxes are recyclable. For more information, visit www. fedex.com.

“Why does this keep happening to me?,” you may ask yourself after the umpteenth romantic relationship gone bad, continual financial difficulty, ongoing health issues or an ongoing addiction. You look at other people’s circumstances, and lament your own unfortunate patterns. As hard as this is to hear (although, it may be a relief), those pesky repetitive patterns are part of your soul’s contract that you voluntarily constructed before you arrived here. That mystery of mysteries, “Why is this so easy for her, and so difficult for me?” Or, “Why do I have to battle this illness? Why me?” It’s not random. These are the things you came into this life to work on and master. When you acknowledge that truth and make the connection, you can then begin to view these life challenges as just that, an interesting challenge that needs to be tackled head on so that you can move past it and not have to repeat it. There is an age-old debate about destiny versus free will. The truth is, both exist harmoniously
and synergistically. Here is a good analogy to help it make sense: the hand of cards you are dealt is your contract, otherwise known as your “destiny.” The way you play that hand is your free will. There are signposts along the highway to guide you, but ultimately free will reigns supreme. This means that once we incarnate into human form and we are up against worldly emotions, ego and myriad distractions; people, places and circumstances will present themselves to give you the opportunity to master the lesson, but the choice is yours to make. Here is an example: A person charts into their contract to live a life of material privilege, and then in midlife they lose nearly all of their material possessions and must rebuild from scratch. They can either choose to transcend their ego, take personal inventory and put one foot in front of the other to rebuild in a positive and constructive way while realigning their values; or they can fall into a permanent pit of despair, or perhaps, choose to turn to illegal activities to rebuild their wealth.
Another person may chart an addiction into their contract with the soul’s intention of overcoming the addition and going on to help others who are struggling with addiction. Or, they can choose to give in to that addiction and live a life of self-harm and selfindulgence, and ultimately see their life and health deteriorate. Upon their life review once they have crossed back into spirit, they will either review a life with much soul growth, or realize they didn’t make the progress they had intended, and they will want to return at some point and try again. When faced with life’s hardships, understand the work that must be done to overcome and transcend that particular piece of karma that your soul has chosen to come here to work on. There are many resources provided for us in the form of signs and synchronicities, spiritual guidance, knowledge, and people to help guide you on your journey. And you wouldn’t have chosen this path if your soul didn’t know it was up for the challenge.

All About Authors Students in Christina O’Neill’s fifth-grade class at the East Meadow School District’s Bowling Green Elementary School saw the reward of hard work when they received their published, “All About Me” books on January 30th. The class started the process of writing at the end of September and
then created illustrations for their writing. Each book was compiled of autobiographies written by each student. The books featured stories and events from their lives with corresponding drawings. Following the completion of each story, Mrs. O’Neill combined the documents to be sent for
publication. The students’ excitement mounted before the books arrived and they officially became published authors. The district congratulates Mrs. O’Neill’s class on their writing ventures and everyone looks forward to reading “All About Me.”

Throughout the Wantagh School District, students paired off in groups to read to one another or listened to a variety of fiction and nonfiction pieces read by faculty and administrators during the annual World Read Aloud Day on February 1st. World Read Aloud Day encourages people throughout the world to read aloud together and share stories to advocate
for literature and the written word. According to Director of Humanities and Literacy Ryan Aliperti, the vision for this program was for every Wantagh student in grades K-12 to participate as a listener in the read-aloud experience. “Participating in read alouds not only fosters a love of written language when sharing in the experience of a common story,” Ms. Aliperti said,
“but doing so also enables people to indulge in listening to the written word being spoken.” In addition to traditional reading, Google hangouts were utilized by secondary students. This video conferencing platform allowed older students to read aloud to the younger students through the use of technology.
Parkway Students Read Aloud The East Meadow School District’s Parkway Elementary School celebrated World Read Aloud Day on Feb. 1 with several classroom activities throughout the building. A highlight was an initiative in which fifthgrade students visited kindergarten, first- and second-grade classes with their favorite books. Each fifth-grader read to their
younger peers while also asking questions to create an engaging literacy lesson. The fifth-graders researched some of their favorite books prior to choosing one to showcase. Upon making their selections, the students created questions on postit notes that they adhered into certain areas of the books in order to bring an
interactive component into the activity by having the younger students answer the presented questions. “This is a great way to help promote literacy in our district as our fifthgraders engaged the younger students in their favorite books and how reading can be fun,” said Principal Jamie Mack.

Youth Wellness Summit
The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District is partnering with the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide to host a Nassau County Youth Wellness Summit on Tuesday, March 19, from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m., at Brookside School. The Youth Wellness Summit is a day-long event hosted by the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide and offered to Nassau County public and private high schools at no cost. The summit was designed to provide students, staff and administrators with the resources needed to support overall wellness, including the prevention of teen suicide and other
upstream prevention measures. By engaging participants with a variety of activities, students will be able to develop positive coping strategies, increase their knowledge as it relates to overall wellness, and learn practical techniques that can be easily implemented in their individual learning environments. SPTS has offered the Youth Wellness Summit in New Jersey since 2014 and is excited to be working with community partners to introduce this important programming in Nassau County. The Summit begins with a powerful and interactive panel discussion
presenting young people with inspiring stories of resiliency and hope. Throughout the day, effective prevention and wellness techniques will be presented on a variety of topics including coping skills, yoga, preparing for life after high school, removing toxic friendships, building selfconfidence and effective communication skills. All Nassau County public and private high schools will be invited to select six students, three sophomores and three juniors, to attend. The newly selected boys seventh- and eighth-grade volleyball teams at Merrick Avenue Middle School started their first season practice with a training clinic with the New York State boys champions volleyball team from John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School
District. Led by coach Dennis Ringel, 16 members of the team came down to help get the first practice going with some great demonstrations and oneon-one coaching for the seventhand eighthgraders. “The high schoolers were able to show off some of
their skills, while working the middle schoolers to get their season off to a great start,” said Daniel Stiglitz, a technology teacher and co-volleyball coach at Merrick Avenue. The boys are also coached by Mark Gross.
