Flashback To Today By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There seems to be an obsession lately, especially on social networking sites, with “flashbacks” and “throwbacks” to times that, in hindsight, were happier and simpler. These moments are shared in the form of photos, videos, reminiscences of milestones and markers, all subtle indications that, for whatever reason, we are not overly happy in the now. But what of the present day? Some would contend that, to borrow from Billy Joel, this is the time to

remember (cause it will not last forever…la, la, la). And they would be correct. Difficult as it may be to step back and appreciate our current situation, whatever it may be, we may find that it was quite ideal in hindsight. No one knows what the next year, or month, or week, or even day, will bring. And there’s really not much sense dwelling on this vast unknown, as much of it is beyond our control. The important things, like family and friends and health and happiness… unfortunately, we can only do so much to maintain our little bubble

of complacency before some outside force pops it. They say you should find the positive in everything, make the most of adverse situations, and do at least one thing each day for you… but how many of us do? No, we would rather move robotically through life, obsessing over each obstacle, letting the slightest bump in the road throw us completely off course. One day, today will be the flashback we choose to highlight on some virtual “wall.” Let’s try enjoying it in real time.

The Long Island Hurricanes Girls Volleyball Team based out of Seaford, NY sent their U12-Elite team to the Annual Capitol Hill Classic Volleyball Tournament on Presidents Day Weekend in Washington DC at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. This is the largest girls volleyball tournament on the East Coast of the USA. There are nearly 1000 teams from the ages of 12 to 18 years old, that play on over 100 courts, over the three-day Presidents’ Day weekend. Typically, only the best teams are sent by their clubs to participate in this tournament. The L.I. Hurricanes girls U12-Elite team, coached by Thomas Badamo of Seaford

and Joseph Heimbauer of Massapequa went undefeated to finish as the Gold Bracket Tournament Champions. The team defeated the New York City Juniors National team in two straight sets in the championship game. The U12-Elite were the only team to finish in first place from the GEVA regional volleyball authority, which includes the NY and NJ region. They played so well that the team was selected to be included in a documentary of The Side-Out Foundation, which raises funding for breast cancer awareness. Two of the Hurricanes players out of the entire athletic pool of hundreds of players within their age bracket earned prestigious

honors. Gabriella Heimbauer earned MVP and Emily Van O’Linda earned Best Digger. Passion for volleyball is nothing new for the Heimbauer’s of Massapequa. Adriana Heimbauer who plays volleyball on The Island Volleyball Academy’s U14 team won 3rd place overall in the Gold Bracket. This special team has won the Gold Bracket Championship for the past two years. They remain undefeated within their age bracket in regional play and continue to be the team to beat. Congratulations to all our Long Island volleyball athletes!

auditorium, the students participated in a scavenger hunt for sight words and counted 100 balloons decorating the hallway. While the younger students were in the auditorium, second-graders were given a mission bag with the task of showing all the various mathematical ways one can get to 100. Throughout the day, students could be seen wearing homemade shirts that featured 100 items,

while others dressed as how they thought they would look at the age of 100. Additionally, the kindergarten and firstgrade students wore a special “100 day” hat that they had personalized with crayons and markers. In their classrooms, students participated in mathematical counting exercises, arts and crafts projects, writing assignments and reading activities.

The Long Island Real Estate Group recently gave a $25,000 donation to Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD) to allow for a dental suite to be named for LIREG in The Charles Evans Health Services Center. Dentistry is a challenge

for many individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. ACLD’s Health Services utilizes a desensitization program to help individuals reduce anxiety about going to the dentist. The program allows for this population to improve their dental health, which is essential to their overall well-being.

Waving Goodbye To Winter

As we wave goodbye to winter, it is easy to forget that there are people out there without a home, food or even shoes. end up sleeping on the streets in the middle of a snowstorm. A few weeks ago, I took part in a Midnight Run. We went to the city and gave out bags of clothes to those who needed them the most. They were eternally grateful for our contributions. One man even tried to give us a thank you gift. Despite the fact that they have so little, the homeless people that we met proved to be some of the most generous. Even though some people regard them as “bums,” the homeless are fighting an uphill battle each and every

day. If one thinks living on minimum wage is tough, try surviving on change. Although I have no firsthand experience in the realm of the homeless, I can imagine just how hard it may be. People can be intolerant of the homeless. They wave them away when all they ask for is change. There is no daily salvation for this group of people that are trying so dearly just to make it. Before you curse the weather while waiting for your car to heat up, remember the men and women who are sleeping in the snow.

Stony Brook University’s Andrew Flescher, PhD, was awarded first place by the American Association of Publishers (AAP) with a Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) Award for his book, Moral Evil, in the publishing category of Theology and Religious Studies. Dr. Flescher is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Preventive Medicine and English, and he is a member of the Core Faculty in the Program in Public Health at Stony Brook Medicine. The AAP’s annual awards program, established in 1976, recognizes the very best in professional and scholarly publishing in more than 40 categories. The PROSE Award entries are judged by peer publishers, librarians, and medical professionals. “I’m stunned to receive this award for my book, which in essence about the subtle but far reaching consequences of human inaction,” said Dr. Flescher. “I am deeply grateful for all of the insightful people at Stony Brook and elsewhere with whom I conferred over the last four years about the topic and those who helped me to refine my thinking at every stage of the project.” In the acknowledgements section of his book, Dr. Flescher explains that the book is a result of exploring the nature of evil over the past decade with students and colleagues. “Rather than asking about its quantitative reduction or qualitative reinterpretation, I am interested in what we do with the fact of evil. What

is a morally constructive model for dealing with the problem of evil? What are the best resources within our religious and moral traditions for thinking about evil in a manner conducive to human flourishing? Whence the motivation for another book about evil,” writes Dr. Flescher in the book’s introduction. Dr. Flescher uses four models to help the reader understand the concepts of moral evil: the presence of badness, the presence of goodness, the absence of badness, and the absence of goodness, which he explores in the first four chapters. In the fifth and final chapter, Dr. Flescher explores evil as inaction and the achievement of moral betterment to help overcome evil. In a review of Dr. Flescher’s book, Diana Fritz Cates, PhD, Professor and Chair, Department of Religious Studies at the University of Iowa wrote, “What is moral evil, and why do people so often fall into its clutches? Flescher’s analysis is penetrating and ethically unflinching. At the same time, it reflects great compassion. This book ought to be read by everyone who longs for goodness and is pained by its absence.” Dr. Flescher has written two other books, Heroes, Saints, and Ordinary Morality and The Altruistic Species: Scientific, Philosophical, and Religious Perspectives of Human Benevolence.

Throughout Forest Lake Elementary School in Wantagh, students were busy decorating valentines and writing letters to send to veterans as part of the Town of Hempstead’s Valentines for Veterans Program.

Prior to decorating their cards, each class received a lesson about the importance of veterans and their contributions to the nation’s freedoms. The older students were instructed to write a letter to a veteran thanking him
