A record breaking, crowd of over 1000 Long Islanders attended the 14th Annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon on Wednesday, February 11th. The sea of red could be seen throughout all the rooms at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. This year’s honorees included Howard Stein, Senior Managing Partner of the Real Estate Practice Group, Certilman Balin Adler & Hyman, LLP and Deborah K. Richman, President and CEO DKUSA, Ltd. and Community Honoree, Premier Cardiology. Those in attendance also heard from 14 yearold heart survivor Gianna Schupler, a competitive dancer. Gianna shared her open heart surgery experience and how she recovered to go on to

win a national dance competition. Gianna was an inspiration to everyone in the crowd. “Being a part of this event from start to finish was an amazing experience” said Teresa Evans, Executive Director, Human Resources, CHL Mortgage a division of Freedom Mortgage who chaired this years’ event. Dr. Jean Marie Cacciabaudo, Chief of Cardiology at Southside Hospital and Dr. Stacey Rosen, V.P. Katz Institute For Women’s Health were the Medical Co-Chairs. Leanna Karlson, Co-host of the Morning Show with Steve & Leeana on K98.3 did an amazing job as event emcee. The American Heart Association’s 14th Annual Go Red For Women Luncheon combined an elegant luncheon reception,

record breaking auction and networking opportunities. The Luncheon featured educational breakout sessions presented by recognized and credentialed healthcare professionals, providing women with information, resources and hope to take action and live a longer, stronger life. BULLYING Bullying is defined as “an overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people,” according to http:// dictionar y.reference.com/ browse/bullying?s=t. Being a student in seventh grade and a victim of bullying, my definition for bullying is when somebody thinks you are weak, “odd” or strange and makes fun of you for being who you are simply because you are different than them. Bullying is a very serious subject. Many cases of bullying happen each day, and kids do not tell an adult so they can get help putting an end to it. I made this mistake. I did not initially tell an adult, and this lack of action only made it worse for me. If you are getting bullied, you need to tell somebody or

you could eventually become self-conscious and doubt yourself. You could lose selfesteem and believe that you are what the bully says you are and isolate yourself from your friends. You think to yourself when your friends invite you to hang out, “They are only going to turn their backs on me too. I should just stay away from them from now on so they do not bully me.” Your friends may sometimes be the only people to help in these situations. When I was bullied, it was for three years! One in ten people get bullied every day. If you notice somebody being bullied, you need to stand up for them and tell the bully, “Stop it! Leave them alone.” If you are continuing to see somebody being bullied, you need to get an adult

immediately. Sometimes you may think that people are just joking around, but their intentions are to just make fun of you without you actually realizing what they are doing to you. Bullying does not have to be just verbal; it can also be cyber bullying and also physical bullying. In my case, I was verbally bullied. The words hurt dreadfully, but one way of handling it was by talking to my family. This was my way of getting the point that I was being bullied out, and I was able to also communicate my feelings when I talked about my situation. My family guided me in techniques to handle the situation and how to put an end to the bullying. Bullying is a serious subject.

who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” Such is the principle of proactivity based upon, of taking small steps to advance great lengths, ultimately. The key, of course, it to begin the process. Complacency is man’s worst enemy; however, settling into such a mindset is perhaps one of the simplest tasks to accomplish. Never mind that “To Do” list – it will be there tomorrow. And the next day. And the day after that. This is closely followed by its evil bedfellow, entitlement; that sense that you somehow deserve more than you have without feeling the need to prove it, or earn it, as the case

You exist day to day, you settle into your routines, and then…well, then you just settle. Plain and simple. Ambition flies out the window, and with it, that drive that propelled you forward for so many years falls flat. As easy as it is to fall prey to this downward spiral, it takes a concerted effort to right the ship and get back on course. This is where the “small stones” come into play. Even something as simple as making lists, outlines of what needs to be done in a

Your Brain On Drugs Dr. Stephen L. Dewey, Center for Behavioral and Molecular Imaging investigator at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, shared his research with Levittown School District’s secondary-level students on the effect of drugs on the human brain’s function and structure. “A drug changes your brain a lot longer than it makes you feel,” Dr. Dewey

told the students. During his presentation, Dr. Dewey explained his research with PET scan technology, a form of nuclear imaging, which provides doctors with a three-dimensional color image of the functional processes of the body. He explained that doctors determine the effects of drugs by studying the PET scan images of a patient, which light up with drug

use and dim with brain damage and inactivity. Dr. Dewey also explained that every drug of abuse, including caffeine and tobacco, works the same way by increasing dopamine, a hormone that makes people feel pleasure. Also important is environment, the number one case of relapse in drug abusers.

This month, the student business leaders of John F. Kennedy High School will represent the region in the final round of the Long Island Virtual Enterprises (LI VE) Business Plan Competition. If successful, these talented entrepreneurs will move on to the National Business Plan Competition in April. The LI VE is a collaborative effort that includes Nassau BOCES, Eastern Suffolk BOCES, Western Suffolk BOCES and the CTE Technical Assistance Center of New York. Bellmore-Merrick

competed against 33 teams in the first round of the Fifth Annual Business Plan Competition, held in January at Farmingdale State College. The students created two separate companies for the competition - Boxality and On the Move - for which they presented comprehensive business plans. After their presentations, the Bellmore-Merrick executives answered a round of questions from the judges, then promoted their businesses at the competition’s tradeshow, modeled after the real-

world industry standard. “The Long Island Virtual Enterprises Business Plan Competition is made possible as part of the Perkins Grant Consortium,” said Ms. Gene Silverman, executive director, Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs and facilitator of the consortium. “This is one of the many ways the grant enriches the lives of students throughout Nassau County by giving them real world work place and 21st Century skills while still in high school.”

Barnum Woods Elementary School second-graders recently engaged in a unit of study on famous Americans. As part of the unit, students researched and read biographies on famous individuals, including

George Washington, Amelia Earhart and Thomas Edison. To celebrate who they studied, second-graders dressed up in costumes as iconic Americans and participated in a parade around their school.
