At Lee Road School, kindergarten students shuffled through the hallways to see where 100 steps would take them. They also wrote about what they would do if they had $100, and dressed like centenarians.

Girl Scouts of Nassau County will showcase eight varieties of the ever-popular Girl Scout Cookies® at Chocolate World Expo (CWE) on Sunday, March 6th from 10 a.m. to 7p.m. The event, held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, will feature tastings and gourmet chocolates, baked goods, specialty foods, cheeses, gelato, wines and much more! Tickets can be purchased in advance, $15 for adults and $10 for children (ages 2-12) or purchased at the door at $20 for adults and $15 for children. Tickets include admission to the expo itself and full admission to the Museum’s fascinating exhibits. “We are so excited to return for our second year and give attendees an opportunity to sample and purchase Girl Scout Cookies®!” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts

of Nassau County. “We will have all six of our classic varieties, Thin Mints, Trefoils, Do-sidos, Samoas, Tagalongs and Savannah Smiles, in addition to the most recently added cookies, Rah-Rah Raisin and Toffeetastic.” The day of fun will also feature performances by Mentalist Oz Pearlman and demonstrations by celebrity chefs Tony Albanese, Scottish Francis, Barret Beyer and Larry Rosenberg. As an added treat the Girl Scouts of Nassau County Chorus is expected to perform. Strolling Into Spring By: Jamie Lynn Ryan March. That month of transition. The beginning of spring and all things new. A rebirth of sorts. Or so we convince ourselves, anyway. Why not January, or February? I suppose weather has as much to do with our moods as any internal factors; and, while March makes no promises with regard to its atmospheric conditions, I think we can safely assume that the worst of winter is now behind us. There is something about the blossoming of trees and flowers, the lengthening of daylight hours, the greening of the now-barren grounds… it signals a revitalization of the year as it stands, a pause in the monotony, a gradual phasing out of the state of hibernation many of us have

been mired in since the holiday season. Just last weekend, I took the time to stroll along two of our pristine Long Island beaches – one on the outskirts of Northport, and the other out on the North Fork. Sure, it was a bit brisk and barren; but just to experience the fresh sea air, to feel the sand beneath my (sneakered) feet, to gaze out onto the crystal blue Long Island Sound… there is something to be said for venturing outside and exploring. That said, it would’ve been nice to have maybe just a couple more snow days to vegetate with a clear conscience, to stay under the covers and catch up on Netflix. The one true “blizzard” was exactly that, one and done, over a weekend. Kind of a waste. The rest of the “snow

days” were more of a minor inconvenience, not nearly enough down time to truly capitalize. That’s the thing about time. When we have it to spare, we don’t often utilize it to its full potential, choosing instead to waste it idling away the hours on trivial things like sleep and mindless chores. Instead, choose to take that leisurely drive, set out on a new adventure to an unexplored corner of the world – even within your own neighborhood. Take pictures, read books, paint, write a song… do things you’ve always wanted to do, today. Tomorrow may be partly cloudy with a chance of rain; but that also means there’s at least an equal chance of sun. May spring be that season of hope for everyone.

Nearly 120 children on the autism spectrum recently showcased their talents and abilities during the “Gersh 201.6 FM” radio

themed live Winter Show held at Gersh Academy in West Hempstead, where students ages five through 21 sang and performed

choreographed numbers alongside live tracks of popular radio tunes from personalized playlists they made in class.

Culminating the students’ many hours of hard work and rehearsal time that began in January, the show featured a total of 12 acts that were proudly watched by over 200 parents as well as Gersh Academy students, staff and teachers. Performing to a medley of radio hits of yesterday and today, elementary students sang and danced along such songs as One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful and Pharrell Williams’ Happy; middle school students performed to such tunes as Good Charlotte’s Game On and Billy Joel’s Piano Man; and high school students strutted their stuff to such perennial favorites as We Will Rock You by Queen, I’m Every Woman by

Chaka Khan and On The Radio by Donna Summer. In between musical performances, students also showcased their acting and comedic chops through a staged radio newscast and comedy skit. Celeste Gagliardi, Principal of Gersh Academy, said that Gersh Academy’s Winter Show is held every year for a very specific purpose. “As delightful and enjoyable as it is to watch our students perform in our Winter Show each year, our Winter Show is far more than just a show – it is an experience with great takeaways for our students,” explains Gagliardi. “This show gives our students a forum for channeling their artistry, creativity, self-expression and camaraderie while

overcoming the many challenges that so many children with developmental disabilities often face, including speaking, social anxiety and sensory integration deficits that can make it difficult to be exposed to loud sounds, music or noise.” Beyond choosing their own music, learning the lyrics and mastering choreographed numbers for performing in the show, the students also designed their own stage sets, which included hand-made vinyl records. They also created themed baskets that were raffled off in an auction held during the show, benefiting Gersh Academy’s special events and projects.

Day at the Beach Inside Forest Lake Elementary School, Wantagh students traded their jackets for Hawaiian shirts and their snow boots for flip-flops as they celebrated the school’s annual Beach Day. Even the snow piles and freezing temperatures outside were long forgotten as classes participated in a number of activities to celebrate the coming summer months on Long Island. In kindergarten classes, students rotated

to different Beach Daythemed stations. They worked mathematical equations by counting fish crackers, fished for rhyming words with fishing poles and painted shells. On the classroom’s Smart Board, students completed sentences with a beach theme, and wrote letters and numbers in a sandbox. In other classrooms, students were encouraged to spread their towels on the floor and to engage

themselves in a great book. In the school’s designated STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics) room, Kathy Bopp’s second-grade students participated in a MakerSpace activity. Students were instructed to create an octopus out of plastic cups, paper clips, decorations and bells. The activity assisted the students in honing their imagination, planning and problem-solving skills.

Cooking Into the New Year Birch School celebrated the Chinese New Year by reviewing the traditions and rituals of the holiday, and also by cooking wontons. Stacey Mahoney and Trish Luberto’s fourthgrade class discussed the customs and festivities of the New Year, which included a large dinner with friends and family, wearing red to represent joy, prosperity and luck,

and receiving red envelopes filled with money or coins. After reviewing the history of the New Year, students prepared handmade wontons to enjoy with the help of class parent Jory Cener. Students assembled wontons with step-by-step directions, and they learned about wonton filling, which included Chinese seasoning and vegetables, such as water chestnuts, bamboo, min-

corn and snow peas. In addition to celebrating the Chinese New Year, kindergartners enjoyed a Lion Dance by members of the Birch staff, including Mr. Ng and Mr. Chan. Mr. Behnke accompanied the dance by playing the drums. Following the performance, students tested their skills of picking up a fortune cookie with chopsticks.

Raising More than Heart Rates

Sixth-graders at Norman J. Levy Lakeside Elementary School in the Merrick School District participated in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart program, raising $4,847.85 to improve the lives of people battling

cardiovascular diseases. On February 12th, students exercised their heart muscles for 45 minutes by jumping rope with their fellow classmates. Prior to the event, they learned about the importance of nutrition, living a healthy

lifestyle and fitness. The district congratulates the sixthgrade class for caring about the lives of others and contributing to the largest donation in Lakeside’s history.

Historical Figures Third-graders at Chatterton Elementary School in the Merrick School District became famous individuals as they presented information about historical figures in their class’ wax museum. As part of their nonfiction reading unit, Lindsay Struss’ thirdgrade class completed a research project on the

life of significant people, including Elvis Presley, George Washington, Taylor Swift, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Rachel Carson. With the push of a button, third-graders came to life as their famous characters and shared facts highlighting the successes of their individuals. Along with a memorized speech, each student created a

poster that included a portrait, a Venn diagram comparing them to the famous figure and a timeline chart of notable events that occurred during the person’s life. The project encouraged students to learn about historical figures and their contributions to the world.

The Levittown School District and Division Avenue High School congratulates Coach Steve Kissane on his 300th win during the Freeport Girls Basketball Tournament on December 29th. Coach Kissane has coached the girls varsity basketball team for the past 25 years and has led the team to the conference championship for the last three years. In 2010, Coach Kissane led the team to the Nassau County Championship, Long Island Championship and to the New York State semifinals. In reflecting upon the team’s successes over the years, Coach Kissane explained that team

chemistry has been the key ingredient. A good group of seniors and a solid core of team players have resulted in this year’s victories, he mentioned. Levittown Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics Keith Snyder described Coach Kissane as the “consummate coach” in that he blends knowledge, determination, aptitude and class into a “gentleman’s approach” to the coaching profession. Snyder also said Kissane is always available to his players, colleagues and family and requires his team to perform a community service project during the basketball season. His teams not only win on the court, Snyder

said, but the players and team often receive awards for sportsmanship and scholar-athlete designations. “I wish I could clone Coach Kissane as an example of what every coach should be,” Snyder said. “I often refer coaches to him for mentoring. I’m truly honored to have brushed elbows with a man of his stature.” Division Avenue High School Principal Joan Lorelli said, “A humble man, Steve Kissane has always put the team’s successes ahead of his own, and we proudly acknowledge this prestigious accomplishment.”

Older & Wiser In honor of completing their first 100 days of school, Chatterton School kindergartners paraded down the hallway dressed as centenarians. With gray hair, canes,

sweater vests and glasses, kindergartners paraded through the halls with “100 Days of Kindergarten” posters for other students, teachers, faculty and administration to see.

Ashley Kim, a senior at MacArthur High School, has advanced to a finalist position in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Ashley will now continue alongside 15,000 chosen finalists to compete for one of 7,400 National Merit scholarships offered in March. At this level of the competition, members of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation will evaluate the finalists’ academic records, information about the high school’s curricula and grading system, recommendations, information about activities and leadership

and a personal essay. An exemplary student, Ashley is an Advanced Placement Student with Honors, vice president of the National Honor Society, president of the French World Language Honor Society, secretary of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and member of Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society). A talented violinist, Ashley is a member of the school’s chamber ensemble, chamber orchestra and pit orchestra. Ashley is also a Peer Leader, member of the Mathletes and Science Olympiad teams, and member of the Key Club and International Club.

Earlier this year, Ashley was invited to attend the school’s prestigious General’s Breakfast, along with peers, who have received a cumulative 95 percent grade point average during all four years of high school. During her free time, Ashley volunteers in the emergency room at Nassau University Medical Center. Ashley is undecided about a college, but said she plans on studying computer science next fall. The Levittown School District congratulates Ashley on this outstanding academic achievement and much success in the competition.

On February 12th, the Sanford H. Calhoun High School girls track team ventured into New York City for one of the most prestigious meets of the year and emerged as national qualifiers. “Coming in virtually unknown and as a huge underdog, no one expected much from the girls - no one but them,” said Coach Joseph Migliano. “The task for the night was simple, run a certain time and qualify for the national championships, this was much easier said than done, as only one team in all of New York State had qualified already.” The girls got off to a fast start led by junior standout Cristin Rodriguez. Rodriguez ran a personal best that night in her leg of the relay and set the team up in a good position.

“Rodriguez would hand off to junior sensation Devon Bayer for the next leg of the race,” said Migliano. “Looking like a veteran, Bayer ran a smooth and extremely fast leg, setting her personal best for the season as well.” Up next would be senior leader and captain Juliann Vizoso running the 400 meter leg of the race. Vizoso was a game time decision for this meet, “as only two days prior she was in the hospital getting her lungs drained for a fluid build up,” according to Migliano. He said Vizoso ran her best race of the season setting up a smooth transition into one of the best runners this nation has to offer, Grace Moore. Moore ,who has been well known for her distance races, would run the 800-meter leg of the relay,

and in true star fashion she did not disappoint, Migliano explained. “Grace got off to a blazing start passing three girls within the first 200 meters,” Migliano said. “Grace ran a strategically smart and fast race setting up to pass her opponents at every opportunity. She would anchor the relay beating her personal best by over 10 seconds.” They are the first national qualifiers in Calhoun High School history, and are currently ranked 43rd out of more than150,000 high school teams in the country. The girls will go on to represent Calhoun High School at the National Track and Field Championships on March 11th in New York City.

Spreading Positivity Taylor Schad, a senior in the Leadership Program at Wellington C. Mepham High School stood in the hallway on February 12th, handing out purple-frosted baked goods and spreading positive messages. “Tell someone you love them today,” she called out to passersby. For P.S. I Love You Day, no donations are involved. Instead the day, which focuses on suicide prevention, simply asks people to show and tell others that they care. Students and staff are also encouraged to wear purple to show support. “Tell those important to

you that you love them,” explained Schad. “Also, try to complete random acts of kindess – which you should be doing anyway.” The high school’s Leadership Program is a two-year course comprised of 58 seniors who are selected by teachers and staff. “The purpose of the class is to build communication skills, encourage peer mentoring and hone listening and decisionmaking skills,” said teacher Jacqueline Geller. Students have organized Pay It Forward Day, assisted at Freshman Orientation, attended the

Human Rights Conference and hosted other events that promote positivity throughout the school. For P.S. I Love You Day, members also wrote out nearly 1,200 messages attached to Hershey Kisses with compliments. These were distributed during first period to each student, as well as placed in faculty mailboxes. One Voice, One Message The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District will host its second annual “One Voice, One Message” Super Hero 5K Run/Walk this spring. The event will take place on April 16th, at 9 a.m., starting and ending at Grand Avenue Middle School. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The school district’s

student ambassadors are organizing the race, and this year’s theme is super heroes. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes. “All six schools within the district will be a part of this worthwhile cause to unite the district through community service,” said Dr. Mara Bollettieri, assistant superintendent of

Three students at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School were honored in the annual “Voice of Democracy” essay contest held by the Hicksville VFW for the district’s students. This year’s theme was, “My Vision for America.” Teachers from three Hicksville schools judged the essays. They were then read and judged by members of the William Gouse Post 3211. The

awards ceremony was held on February 22nd. The Holy Trinity winners were: First Place, Senior Michael Monahan of Wantagh; Second Place, Senior Michael Nguyen of Westbury and Third Place, Senior Jennifer LoCascio of Levittown. Holy Trinity High School is a private, co-educational Catholic high school founded in 1966 drawing students from Nassau,

Throughout Levittown School District, elementary students celebrated the first 100 days of school with a variety of fun-filled math and English language arts activities that reinforced skills learned since the beginning of school. At Lee Road School, kindergarten students shuffled through the hallways to see where 100

steps would take them. They also wrote about what they would do if they had $100 and dressed like centenarians. During a math activity, students made a trail mix recipe, counting out 10 each of marshmallows, pretzels, Skittles, popcorn and more. The food items were placed on a graph and counted prior to being mixed into a

delicious concoction. In addition to academic activities, Summit Lane Elementary School students collectively sang songs and modeled their artistically rendered T-shirts during a 100 days of school assembly. Each student modeled their shirt for the audience and then joined peers for a variety of math and ELA activities.

Dragon Pride Award Eight Division Avenue High School students, two from each grade, received the Dragon Pride Award for outstanding character and citizenship during the second quarter of the year. Conceived by the Division Avenue School Development Committee and chaired by assistant

principal John Coscia, the Dragon Pride Award recognizes the tenets of dignity, respect, accountability, generosity, open-mindedness and noble actions. The following students were nominated by staff for their contributions to the positive quality of life on

Imaginations Fly Reflections Program encourages students of all ages to reflect on this year’s theme, “Let Your Imagination Fly,” to create works of art in the categories of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts and to earn positive recognition for their achievements.

Eighth-grade swimmer Youssef Ibrahim finished the dual meet season with the Bellmore-Merrick Sharks undefeated in 1-meter Diving.

“Youssef started the division championships with a bang by taking first place and qualifying for the state championships in Buffalo,” said the district

swim coach Robert Kaefer. The Grand Avenue Middle School eighthgrader went on to win this event at both the Division A Championships and the Nassau County Championships. Youssef scored a personal best with 491.05 points at the county championships, thusly qualifying him for the New York State Championships, which will be held at Erie Community College in Buffalo from March 4th-5th. Girl Scout PSA The Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) recently recorded a radio PSA to promote their 2016 “Girls Go the Distance” Walkathon Campaign that will be broadcasted on WALK-FM. Madison, a Girl Scout Cadet from Malverne, used the PSA to encourage listeners to attend the April 17th Walkathon where more than 800 people will be participating. This event supports GSNC’s Healthy Living Initiative programs, encouraging girls to live healthy lifestyles physically, emotionally and socially. Families and

individuals will also enjoy food, games and activities. The event will be held at Old Bethpage Village Restoration on Sunday,

New Facade Unveiled

Wednesday afternoon the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center in Garden City, New York, officially named their mascot, a Dalmatian

puppy, which is a piece of the building’s new façade, designed by H2M architects and engineers. H2M’s Director of Architecture, Joe Mottola, who is also a Massapequa

Volunteer Firefighter, is a board member at the museum and volunteered H2M’s services to design the façade. The project team for the design included Project Designer

Katie Stone, Structural Engineering Department Manager Mike Mckeown, Staff Engineer Berhan Gebregziabiher and Project Designer Patrick Stone. The name of the Dalmatian was determined by a statewide New York contest last November inviting children age 12 and under to submit names for the official mascot of the center, a 25foot tall Dalmatian puppy, now adoring the façade of the museum. The winner is Lilyana Rodriguez, 5, of Massapequa, who chose the name Valiant to represent courage, an appropriate name to describe firefighters and the work they do. Lilyana was presented with a miniature firefighter uniform by the Museum’s Executive Director, Alana Petrocelli. The museum also hosted a celebratory

party after the ceremony for Lilyana and her family, classmates and friends. The Massapequa Volunteer Firefighters, including Joe Mottola, Pat Stone and TJ Corona attended the ceremony with their fire truck and used the 100-foot ladder to rise up to the dog and display his name on a large bone-shaped dog tag, as Lilyana revealed the name at the entrance of the museum for the news cameras and newspaper photographers as they captured the moment. “I’m very excited to have contributed our services to the museum, the firematic services and the community. Giving back to the community is of utmost importance and is furthered with this project by continuing the dream of the founders to provide a hands on opportunity to learn

about fire safety for our youth and community members,” said Joe Mottola. “Congratulations to Lilyana and her family.” The project was initiated in order to improve the aesthetic of the façade, provide a statement piece that was highly visible to the surrounding area to attract visitors, and to introduce wayfinding signage for the museum’s entrance. The museum wanted a “whimsical” design that was kidfriendly. Opened in June 2006, the museum is a 10,000 square foot interactive facility where individuals and families can experience firsthand the proud tradition of firefighting in our communities. The new façade was completed in October 2015.
