100 Days Brighter As Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center students recently filed into their classrooms, they were greeted with balloons and congratulated by faculty and staff for having attended the first 100 days of school. Students in pre-K, kindergarten and first grade then gathered in the

auditorium where they sang the Reinhard Song, “The 100 Song” and “One by One” to celebrate the momentous occasion. To sharpen their math skills, everyone counted to 100 by tens and fives, stayed completely silent for 100 seconds and searched with classmates for 100 words posted throughout the

school. In addition, second-grade students participated in a 100-Day math challenge by writing equations totaling 100. Many of the students also decorated their T-shirts and poster boards with items totaling 100 and dressed as 100-year-old people.

A talented cast and crew drew a full house during performances of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” held in the Wantagh High School auditorium. Under the direction of Heather Naughton and vocal director Jennifer Alessi, the cast amused the audience with this memorable tale about the beautiful mermaid princess

The pit orchestra, under the baton of Mindy Dragovich, entertained theater-goers with popular musical interludes, including “Under the Sea,” “Beyond My Wildest Dreams,” and “If Only.” Prior to opening night, the National Honor Society

held an Intergenerational Dinner with a Greek café theme for the community’s senior citizens, who were invited to attend a free performance of the musical. The students served the guests a meal of lemon chicken with potatoes, Greek salad and a variety of desserts.

The bond initiative will fund the repairs and renovations to the schools, improve energy efficiency, support science initiatives and restore the district’s natural grass athletic fields for school and community use. The proposed bond would also support major repairs and upgrades to the public library to enhance additional programs and services, improve energy efficiency and security systems and increase opportunities to serve students and patrons. During the life span of the bond, the average annual cost to the taxpayer is $57.53, or approximately 16¢ per day. The projected average annual cost to the taxpayer is calculated using the average assessed property value as determined by the Nassau County Assessor’s Office. It is anticipated the work in the schools will begin during the summer of

2018 and the library work will also begin sometime in 2018. This is an exciting time for the community. All residents are encouraged to vote on Tuesday, March 7th, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., at all district elementary schools. On Tuesday, March 7th, residents will have an opportunity to vote on a joint bond referendum proposed by the East Meadow Public Schools and the East Meadow Public Library that, if approved, will renovate and improve the schools and library to better serve students and community residents into the future. For the first time in East Meadow’s history, residents will vote on a joint bond at significant savings to the taxpayer. sweet treat to the team who collected the most pantry items for the districtwide Day of Service event — a warm hotcake breakfast. At MAMS, students are split up into four site-based teams. Various staff members floured, flipped, served and syruped a pancake feast

for the winners, Team 3, which included about 200 students. “Merrick Avenue collectively supplied more than 1,000 pieces of donated items to the Day of Service that went to various shelters and group homes,” said Assistant Principal Katelyn Dunn.

I’m fairly good with directions. For someone who, as a passenger, is rather oblivious to her surroundings, once in the driver’s seat, I can generally navigate with little trouble. Of course, in this day and age, there is always the added benefit of GPS to fall back on. And by benefit, I mean often maddening source of frustration and bewilderment. Case in point: my friend and I have, over the last several years, attended several of the laser light shows at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. Of course, there are several possible routes to take, but all roads ultimately lead to one winding, somewhat meandering path through the

hilly terrain of Centerport. As these shows are generally in the evening, I always plug the address into the phone’s map so as to be sure I don’t miss a turn en route. Of the approximately half a dozen times we have headed this way, I can honestly say we have never managed to travel the same way twice. Never. Not once. Just last week, as if to prove the point, my phone’s darling virtual assistant proceeded to take us on a grand tour of the residential area surrounding the planetarium, complete with dozens of unnecessary turns (followed by U-turn’s and “rerouting”), forks in the road (continue heading straight, she said) and even a pass over a small body of water (do you remember there

a fun guessing game as to which way she might send us next. Amazingly, our time of arrival only fluctuated by a minute or so, in spite of the fact that our route never came close to matching the virtually straight line that had appeared on the map. It was a bizarre journey, to be sure – and will continue to be, should we venture that way again. That, at least, seems to be a guarantee.

Challenger League student-athletes from Salk and MacArthur High School paired off against league participants from Wisdom Lane Middle School in an annual homecoming basketball game. MacArthur High School buddies assisted the Salk Middle School and MacArthur Challenger League athletes, and the MacArthur cheerleading team rallied the crowd with stunts and cheers. The MacArthur High School pep band, under

the direction of Joseph Romano, also raised the spirits of the crowd. At the start of the game, the Salk-MacArthur Challenger team ran through a homemade paper banner, and each player from both teams was introduced to the community. The players showed an enormous amount of sportsmanship while still demonstrating their competitive spirit. The evening ended with a victory for each of the teams.

Wantagh High School Virtual Enterprise students have realized national success in their global approach to selling ice cream. Under the direction of VE teacher Nancy O’Connor, Abstract Ice Cream received an honorable mention during the VE Employee Manual Competition, an honorable mention in the Elevator Pitch Competition and now ranks in the top 25 percent of VE companies in

the Branding Competition. Through an Abstract Ice Cream subscription, patrons receive a unique flavor of ice cream each month. Abstract Ice Cream and RUSH, which sells electric sports equipment for the ultimate athletic experience, are two virtual companies run by students enrolled in the district’s new Virtual Enterprise Program. As employees of a virtual business, students are

held accountable for the company’s performance. They conduct market research, develop a business plan, develop and design an e-commerce website, pay wages and taxes, maintain 410(K) plans and develop an annual report. In addition, VE students have the opportunity to interact with 5,000 other VE firms locally, nationally and globally.

During the Wantagh UFSD Board of Education meeting held on February 16th, the board accepted the resignation of Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg for the purpose of retirement. Concurrently, the board unanimously appointed Assistant Superintendent for Instruction John McNamara to succeed Mrs. Goldberg as superintendent of schools, effective July 1st, 2017. “On behalf of the entire board, I wish to extend my sincere thanks to Mrs. Goldberg for her years of service and wish her a quiet and relaxing retirement,” said Board President Anthony Greco. “Mrs. Goldberg stepped into the role of superintendent during a time of administrative instability in our district, and her leadership skills and commitment to our district and students have helped Wantagh reach a higher level of achievement.” Under Mrs. Goldberg’s leadership, Wantagh has implemented full-day kindergarten; increased the overall rigor of academic offerings, including the implementation of AP Capstone, STEAM programs and the Chromebook initiative; enhanced facilities; and passed budgets compliant with the tax levy cap. Also during her tenure as superintendent, the high school graduation rate has remained steady at 99 to 100 percent and student enrollment in Advanced Placement courses has increased. Mrs. Goldberg joined the district in 1977 and served as a special education teacher, director of pupil personnel services and principal of Forest Lake Elementary School

for 17 years before taking on the role of superintendent. “It has been my privilege to spend the majority of my career in Wantagh,” said Mrs. Goldberg. “I will take many fond memories of my time here with me into my retirement. I thank the board, the students, staff and community for their support during my years here. I am confident that Wantagh will continue to thrive under the leadership of Mr. McNamara.” Upon learning of Mrs. Goldberg’s intent to retire, the

members of the board considered their options regarding the selection of the next superintendent. Following internal discussions, they concluded that Mr. McNamara had the professional qualities, personal integrity and strong familiarity with the community to lead Wantagh into the future. “We are very fortunate to have such a qualified

He began his educational career as a social studies teacher. Mr. McNamara holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Providence College, a master’s degree in liberal studies with a concentration in social studies education from Stony Brook University, and school district administrator certification from Touro College. “It is truly an honor to be appointed as the next superintendent,” said Mr. McNamara. “I thank the board for having the confidence in me to serve in this role. Promoting Teamwork Shore Road School sixthgraders dressed in college team colors and attire to challenge one another during the school’s annual Sixth-Grade College Olympics. The students first demonstrated the democratic process by determining their college

teams, which included the Penn State Nittany Lions, UCLA Bruins, Michigan Wolverines, Maryland Terrapins, Oregon Ducks, North Carolina Tar Heels and Syracuse Orangemen. Under the direction of physical education teachers Brian Scott and Mallory Cogen, the

students battled it out on the court with a game of basketball as their peers cheered from the sidelines. “The Sixth-Grade College Olympics promotes camaraderie among the students, as well as sportsmanship and healthy competition,” Mr. Scott explained.

What’s Inside As part of Health and Safety Week, Winthrop Avenue School students stretched out on mats to learn some basic yoga moves. Taught by Department of Education yoga instructor Arleen Mattos, the activity was an introduction to the techniques learned in the school’s new yoga club to be offered this spring. “This is the ultimate way to make your minds

and bodies healthy and to connect with your essence,” Mattos told the students. Participants learned etiquette on the mat, the symbolism behind the starting bell and elementary yoga techniques. They also learned that yoga builds flexibility and helps followers to pay attention and manage feelings. In addition to yoga instruction, students also

spoke with Nassau County Police Officer Sharon Galvin about technology safety and safety in the community. They attended an assembly on good nutrition and healthy eating habits, as well as bully prevention. Students also learned about passenger and pedestrian safety through the AAA Program.

Celebrating 100 Days Forest Lake, Mandalay and Wantagh elementary school students celebrated the first 100 days of school with various English language arts, mathematics and art activities. In Sarah Danziger’s kindergarten class at Wantagh Elementary School, students painted 100 gumballs on paper

gumball machines, built a structure using 100 plastic cups, finished activities in a 100-Day Book, and dressed as 100-year-old people. Christina Basedow’s kindergartners also made bird feeders by placing 100 Cheerios on a string. Firstgrade students participated in a 100-Day word search, wrote about what it would

be like to live to 100 years old, and charted the distance of 100 steps. Many of the kindergarten through fifth-grade classrooms celebrated the momentous occasion by decorating their T-shirts with 100 of their favorite items.

Community Partnership In celebration of Valentine’s Day, the John F. Kennedy High School Key Club from the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District worked with Bellmore School District’s kindergarten students at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center on a Love Bug project. The activity allowed the 25 club members to receive

valuable community service hours, while providing an opportunity to mentor younger students. The kindergartners had fun decorating their red construction paper love bugs with fluffy pipe cleaner antennas, eyes and messages of love, while the high school students demonstrated

important role modeling and teamwork skills. Adviser Jessica Chilton said the high school students enjoyed working with the younger students. “The Key Club always looks forward to visiting schools and fostering a community partnership between districts,” she said.

A Sweet Tune

The Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center Student Advisory Council visited residents at Parkview Nursing Center on February 8th in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Dressed in red and pink, the 25 first- and second-grade students performed several songs, including “Love Somebody,” “V-AL-E-N-T-I-N-E,” “You

are My Sunshine” and the “Reinhard School Song.” The students then distributed Valentine’s Day cards. The students had practiced the songs with music teacher Randi Andersen and were well prepared for the morning. “Our goal was to spread sunshine to the residents,” Mrs. Andersen said. “The purpose of SAC is to make

a difference and each one of us can do that every day.” In addition, secondgrade students in Marisa DeMarzo’s class joined Mrs. Andersen on Valentine’s Day to spice up the morning announcements. The students brightened the start of everyone’s school day by singing “Love Somebody” and “V-A-L-E-N-T-I-N-E.”

Celebrating 100

Kindergarten students at Northside School in the Levittown School District are now smarter for having attended the first 100 days of the school year. Dressed as 100-year-old

people, they participated in classroom activities designed to reinforce their skills to count to 100. In addition, the students completed assignments in which they decorated

poster boards with 100 of their favorite items. In the afternoon, the entire class marched through the hallways to model their attire and to celebrate this momentous milestone.
