could write and how many shapes they could draw. Kindergartners dis-covered how far they could go in the school by walking 100 steps and did a “Race to 100” math game by rolling dice and moving their game pieces until they reached the magic number.

Innovative Fitness Programs For Seniors It is important to stay active and eat healthy foods in an effort to promote fitness and well-being. This is especially true for seniors, many of whom lead increasingly sedentary lifestyles as they age. The American Heart Association says adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity, and a Harvard University study says that exercise can be an insurance policy for heart health. Today’s seniors have more fitness options at their disposal than ever before. SilverSneakers® is the leading community fitness program for older adults in the United States. SilverSneakers® members can participate in specially curated programs at participating gyms and community centers across the nation. According to the organization, there are more participating fitness locations available than there are Starbucks® coffee establishments. Classes are fit for everyone, no matter their experience level. Those concerned about gym costs
may find that SilverSneakers® already is included in their Medicare Advantage plan for no additional cost. Plus, there is access to healthy living discounts from participating businesses. Canada has begun to develop its own senior-centric fitness programs. The Healthy, Safe and Strong group exercise program is an introduction to safe exercises available for adults age 60 and older in the province of Ontario. The program can help develop better stamina, maintain or improve balance and increase strength and endurance. StrongerU Senior Fitness is a relatively new program of pre-choreographed group fitness offering instruction in four program types: cardio, strength training, stretching, and circuit training. The program addresses a need in Canada for quality and consistent senior fitness programing. As studies show that engaging in physical activity is the most effective way for aging men and women to stay healthy, more adults may be compelled to join fitness groups that cater to the 50-and-over market.
They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season
for both programs will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! The Long Island Music Hall of Fame is proud to announce that it is accepting applications for the 2020 School Recognition Program. The Long Island Music Hall of Fame High School Recognition Program is designed to identify Long Island High School music programs that are creating valuable music experiences for their students and that are incorporating the National and New York State’s Standards for the arts in creative and meaningful ways. “We are very excited to offer Long Island schools an opportunity to have their music programs objectively evaluated,” said LIMHOF Vice Education Committee Chairman Tom Needham. “We will not only honor programs but will also share feedback and learn more about the challenges each school faces as we continue to support and promote
music education on Long Island.” Applications will be reviewed by a panel of music educators some whom have been recognized by the Long Island Music Hall of Fame as “Educators of Note.” High Schools will be given designations of Gold with Distinction, Gold, Silver, Bronze or Emerging. Application categories included program details, inclusion of standards, faculty, as well as community and board support. Recognized schools will have the opportunity to participate in an upcoming Long Island Music Hall of Fame event and will be acknowledged throughout the year. “The Long Island Music Hall of Fame is committed to music education, it is part of our mission and helps steer many of the programs we have developed,” said LIMHOF Chairman Ernie Canadeo.
“At the High School level, we support students with scholarships, educators with the Educator of Note award and the schools/ districts that work to keep their programs in the forefront for their students and communities. Too Much Sleep Can Be Harmful Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night (the NSF notes that a small percentage of people may need 10 hours of sleep per night). People who routinely sleep more than seven to nine hours may have an underlying health concern. For example, the NSF notes that a recent study found that routinely sleeping more than 10 hours per night can be linked to metabolic syndrome. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Obesity, headache and back pain are some
additional potential side effects of excessive sleep. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that genetics and age are significant factors in determining the amount of sleep healthy individuals need. However, young adults should resist the notion that they need less than seven hours of sleep per night because they’re young, while older adults should similarly avoid thinking that they need more sleep simply because they’re aging. As the NSF guidelines suggest, the sweet spot for healthy adults is typically between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. A good night’s rest is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. But adults must recognize that excessive amounts of sleep can be just as detrimental as inadequate sleep. Individuals can speak with their physicians to determine their specific sleep needs.

Mandalay Mental Health Summit Wantagh School District parents and faculty attended the district’s first Mental Health Summit, held at Mandalay Elementary School on Jan. 30. The Summit provided parents with the opportunity to select from a menu of nine presentations by experts in the field of mental health, nutrition, emotional wellbeing and raising healthy and emotionally thriving adolescents. Elementary school counselor Donna Schulman explained that a similar forum during the 2018-2019 school
year, in tandem with the Long Island Crisis Center, was such a success that the district decided to expand with this year’s summit. In addition to the informative presentations, Long Island Crisis Center representatives and members of SEPTA were also on hand with important information. “We want to increase awareness of mental health issues facing families and give parents resources to assist with their children’s development through adolescence,” Ms. Schulman said. Child and adolescent
psychiatrist Dr. Caryl Oris was the opening session speaker who delivered her presentation “Parenting: Helping Your Child Achieve Academic Success and Social/Emotional Well-Being,” setting the tone for the evening’s discussions. She discussed the importance of early brain development and tips for raising successful children including selfcontrol, communication skills and limiting screen and media time. “Good parenting is about having a good relationship with your child and working on ways to develop
that relationship,” Dr. Oris said. Other presenters included special education teacher Angela Farinacci, “Essential Oils Support Healthy Emotions;” nutritionist and dietician Sharon George, “Food and Nutrition for the Family;” Long Island Crisis Center crisis hotline counselor Debbie Grattan, “Raising Resilient Kids;” elementary education and special education and gifted teacher Renee
