Chinese lanterns and dragons hung from the classroom walls and students donned masks as third graders at Wantagh Elementary School celebrated the Chinese New Year.

For the past several weeks, the students have been studying the geography, government, culture, famous sites and history of China and have compared this newly acquired information with

life in the United States. The students also studied what life as a child would be like in both countries. As a culminating activity, class parents delivered Chinese food for all of the students to taste.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Executive Women’s Golf Association’s (EWGA) Long Island Chapter. As the largest women-focused amateur golf association in the United States with chapters in nearly every U.S. major market and corporate center, the EWGA has connected more than 100,000 working and professional women who share a passion for cultivating relationships and enjoying the game of golf. Random Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As if navigating the roads this winter wasn’t hazardous enough with the snow and ice and freezing rain, we now have a new obstacle to contend with – the vast wasteland of potholes cropping up on every corner and parkway ramp. Try attempting to slow down as your headlights catch a glimpse of the crater before you, just waiting to devour a tire or two. One more time – is it spring yet? At least spring training has finally arrived, and with it the not entirely unexpected announcement

from Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter that this season will be his final year playing baseball. A class act until the end, Jeter took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message of thanks and appreciation to his fans, his teammates, his family and friends. He will leave the Yankees at the top of his game, a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer with a legacy the likes of which will not be seen again. Speaking of, remember all those long lost friends you thought you would never see again? Well, thanks to social networking, virtual reunions have become fairly

common. Sure, there’s plenty of useless material to navigate through; but if you learn to utilize these sites properly, the odds of reconnecting with someone are pretty likely. Everything in moderation, right? That’s the mentality you need to adopt for spring – moderation – with diet, exercise, everything. Those bathing suits that have been cropping up in every department store? They’re not going away anytime soon. NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY - Red was the color of the day on Friday, February 7th, as St. Charles Hospital employees participated in the American Heart Association’s (AHA) National Wear Red Day. On February 16th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its 1st Annual Give From The Heart Athletes for Alzheimer’s event at Steel Fitness Gym in Bellmore. The event raised over $5,000 for its programs that help those who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease and their unpaid caregivers. Approximately 100 people participated in a daylong contest to determine who could perform the most sit-ups or push-ups in a given period of time. Dear Little Dollies,

a unique doll collectors shop in Bellmore, was the presenting sponsor for the event. Other groups and organizations in attendance included Molloy College, Kellenberg High School, and Nancy Burner & Associates. Volunteer coaches and Steel Fitness Gym trainers observed participants throughout the competition to ensure that the sit-ups and pushups were completed correctly and counted accurately. More than 900 people from across Long Island joined a “movement” on Wednesday, February 12th, by attending the hugely successful American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon at The Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement encouraged everyone in attendance to “Speak Red” to help save lives and take charge of their cardiovascular health and share the life-altering and life-saving information of

Students at Bellmore’s Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center put their creativity to use, as local author and illustrator Joyce Raimondo hosted a three-day Read Me A Picture workshop for the students. According to Ms. Raimondo’s website, the program encourages visual literacy, the development

of narratives by looking at pictures, writing, reading, art and verbal skills. During the PTAsponsored cultural arts program, students learned about famous authors and illustrators Marc Chagall and Faith Ringold and created their own art projects that told a story. “Anything can happen in

art,” Ms. Raimondo said. “Use your imaginations and create your stories.” Bellmore art teacher Karolyn Hertzberg said, “This program is great.
