But on this day, a very special rescue was made. This was the day that Betty and Wilma were given a second chance at life. Betty and Wilma are two senior Labrador mixes. These two ladies were found wandering the streets by a local town shelter. They were aimlessly walking together, in the dead of winter.

Wilma is a sweet, sassy Chocolate Lab; and best friend, Betty, is a lively and loveable Black Lab. These wonderful dogs are truly inseparable. Their kennels are right next to each other at Little Shelter, but of course, that’s not close enough. These girls whine and cry for each other and are just ecstatic when then have the opportunity to play together.

drive to benefit the John Theissen Children’s Foundation by collecting toy donations in the school’s main lobby and at the annual Cupcake Dance.
Advisor Nicole Friedman noted that the students wanted to show their spirit after the traditional giving season had ended.
Four Chaplains Ceremony Hempstead Town Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad present an official Town of Hempstead Certificate of Recognition on the occasion of the Wantagh American Legion Post #1273’s Four Chaplains Day Ceremony. Commemorated was
the sacrifice of four military chaplains (Lt. George L. Fox, Methodist; Lt. Alexander D. Goode, Jewish; Lt. John P. Washington, Roman Catholic; and Lt. Clark V. Poling, Dutch Reform), who chose to go down with U.S.A.T. Dorchester on February 3rd, 1943,
after it was torpedoed by a German submarine. In addition to calming the frightened and tending the wounded, the chaplains gave up their life jackets. They were posthumously awarded the Distinguished Cross, the Purple Heart and Special Medal for Heroism.

Hempstead Town Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney congratulated and presented official Certificates of Recognition to the pupils who participated in the Valentines for Vets program
held at the Mandalay School located on Bayview Avenue in Wantagh. Through this program, which the Town instituted in 2001, students create valentines to send to veterans at local VA
hospitals. Many of these men and women don’t have families and it means a lot to them to know that the young children appreciate them for the sacrifices they made for our nation. Every athlete or coach does his/ her best to win, to earn awards and to be famous. Some people might go farther than they should to achieve this goal. Not only in little leagues or school teams do people cheat, but also in professional leagues. There have been many cases where people have cheated to get what they strived for. Does this mean they should be stripped of their awards? What if it was the coach’s fault and not the athletes? Who should be penalized for it? This year in the NFL, it has been alleged that the Patriots cheated their way into the Super Bowl. They deflated the footballs so it was easier for the quarterbacks and the running backs to hold and the receivers to catch. Every team member had to
have noticed the difference in the footballs, but yet no one did anything. An even bigger surprise is that the coach and quarterback denied any knowledge of it. Did they get what they wanted? Yes. The Patriots cheated their way into winning the Super Bowl. This is not the first time they have cheated to win the Super Bowl. First it was “Spy-Gate”; now it’s Deflate-Gate. However, they weren’t penalized for their actions. They have kept their titles and enjoyed victory parades. Yet, in the case with the Jackie Robinson West team, all the Little League athletes were stripped of their title. In that situation, the team “was stripped of its national title after an investigation revealed that team officials had falsified area boundaries. They did this
to add ineligible players to the roster.” (Newsday) In this case, the athletes couldn’t possibly have been aware of the fact that what the team officials did was illegal. Yet all their hard work had been for nothing. Every win they had was taken away from them. So, why were these children stripped of their titles, but the Patriots got to keep their wins? The Patriots’ wins were the biggest accomplishment in the football industry. Why is it that the little leagues have been stripped of their title but the professional leagues haven’t? Even though cheating in the first place isn’t right, should the athletes be punished if it wasn’t their fault? That’s your opinion to decide.

Students and staff at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center celebrated the 100th day of school on February 13th with a myriad of different activities. Dressed as how they thought they would look at the age 100, kindergartners and firstgraders participated in a special 100th day assembly. Led by Principal Patricia Castine and Assistant Principal Elise Cahill, the Bellmore students sang the Reinhard Rising Star song, the 100 Days of School Song and counted off to 100 to see how many kids represented the number of the day. Teachers also tossed beanbags as students counted to 100. At the second-grade level, students were given
mission bags and tasked with investigating the various ways they could make 100. Index card results were posted on the walls outside their classrooms. Additionally,

On February 16th, my “half-birthday,” I decided the time was right to adopt another fish to join the family. As of this writing, “Buddy” – as I dubbed my aqua-colored delta-fin betta fish – is adjusting quite nicely to life in his betta bowl. He swims, he floats, he eats… although not when I’m in the vicinity. I literally found myself crouching down out of sight to see if he was, in fact, eating. Most fish can’t wait for that first flake to drop; Buddy, not so much. Perhaps he’s just self-conscious. But I finally caught him in the act, sucking down a betta pellet and – get
this – chewing it thoroughly. I know, I know… fish don’t have teeth. But his motions mimicked a dog munching on a treat, breaking it down bit by bit until he had fully digested his dinner. That’s my Buddy, pretty and quirky and providing some of the best entertainment this side of the aquarium since my dearly departed finned friends, Harry and Harvey. By all accounts, bettas have a much more substantial lifespan than your average goldfish, so let’s hope Buddy hangs in for a while. Of course, I suppose he could already be pushing 3 years old as we speak, so his longevity remains to be seen. For me, the biggest test will
be the weekly water change / “bath time” process, that unwelcome disturbance of fishbowl tranquility that all marine life seems to detest. Unfortunately for Buddy, he has no shrubbery or decorative toys to hide behind – yet. We’ll see if I can find something appropriate for his little underwater kingdom. For now, he’ll just have to deal with being on full display for all to see. Hopefully, Buddy will still be flitting around come August 16th, and we can celebrate his “half-birthday” along with my “full” one. In any case, he now has a column to officially commemorate his arrival. Just what every fish wants.

Virtual Classes Offered Schools across New York State are working to implement the changes made to Part 154 of the state regulations on programs for English language learners. Long Island districts now have assistance in navigating these changes, thanks to Nassau BOCES.
The Nassau BOCES Center for Online Learning is inviting educators to join its collaborative support network, “Examining and Implementing the New Part 154 Regulations.” Educators who participate in this collaborative get a four-week virtual course, guiding them in
the implementation of the new regulations. The course offers video-based instruction enhanced by downloadable support materials. The truly unique aspect of the program is a virtual forum, enabling administrators and other educators from all over the
island to come together and pool their resources. The forum functions as an online collaborative for educators to share best practices and useful documents, as well as 0to discuss potential obstacles and solutions, and to work together to overcome common challenges.
“We’re building a community to support the implementation of the new regulations,” says Nassau BOCES Program Coordinator Elisa Barilla. “Collaboration is the key component. The forum allows districts to work together, to help each other to avoid stumbling

Thespians Pack The House Wantagh High School’s talented cast and crew drew a full house on opening night of Frank Loesser and Abe Burrows’ “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.” Under the direction of Heather Romano and vocal direction of David Burt, the cast and crew amused the audience with this tale about former window washer J. Pierrepont Finch who carefully follows the advice of the book “How
to Succeed in Business.” He eventually rises to the position of the World-Wide Wicket Company’s vice president of advertising and makes sure that everyone in a more powerful position is fired or transferred. The pit orchestra, under the baton of Mindy Dragovich, entertained theatergoers with sassy musical interludes, including “Happy To Keep His Dinner Warm,” “Been
A Long Day” and “I Believe In You.” Ms. Romano and Wantagh Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts Kelly Good explained that although the musical was extremely challenging, the students not only received a variety of musical and acting experiences, but entertained the community with a production that will surely be remembered for years to come.

Presentations in the school library included information about China, Turkey, Honduras, El Salvador, Pakistan and more. The students also dressed in native costume
as they shared with fellow students facts about their countries. Students from the language classes were encouraged to sing songs, and Spanish learners played a game of Memory (Spanish vocabulary version). Prior to International Day, teachers presented their classes with a PowerPoint of their own heritage. Many of the students also participated in a schoolwide travel poster contest.

Braille Challenge A total of 17 students from across the region recently gathered at W.T. Clarke High School for the eighth annual Braille Challenge. The Braille Challenge, a program developed by the Braille Institute of America, was designed to motivate school-aged visually impaired or blind children to continue their study of Braille. Students completed a number of grade-level exercises to demonstrate their proficiency in Braille reading, writing, reading speed and comprehension, spelling, proofreading and use of tactile graphics. This year, students had the opportunity to meet members of the Long Island Bombers Beep Baseball team, a group which demonstrated their version of baseball using a ball and bases which beep. Third Eye Insight, an organization that offers martial arts, meditation and yoga classes for the visually impaired and
blind community, was also on hand and introduced students to martial arts. Of the participants in the Braille Challenge, W.T. Clarke High School students Michael Taylor and Jessica Banschbach both participated in the event. The regional event is the first step on the road to the national competition, which will be held in June at the Braille Institute’s headquarters in Los Angeles. Students from across the nation are in the process on completing preliminary testing in the hopes of qualifying for the 60 spots available in the national competition. The top scorers in the preliminary round will advance to the nationals to represent their state as they compete against the top blind students from across the United States and Canada. the participants before the Braille Challenge commenced, noting the district remains honored to host the annual event each year. “I am so proud of all these students, and also in awe of all the talents that these students will be demonstrating today in the Braille Challenge,” she said, also commending Braille Challenge Coordinator Petra Tarrant. “This day could not have happened without all the hard work and tireless effort she has put in.” The district also extends its appreciation to the Special Education Institute of New York, Pizza Supreme, the Rockville Centre Lions Club, Seedlings Braille Books for Children, National Braille Press, Humanware and East Meadow’s Special Education PTA for their donations and support, and all the event volunteers for making the day such a success.

Inaugural Spelling Bee Levittown third-grader Alex Gao was the firstplace winner of Abbey Lane Elementary School’s inaugural spelling bee; fourth-grader Cole Stellman took second place. Under the direction of teachers Kelly DiPretoro and Paul Speranza, students in grades 3-5 were given a list of 100 words to study. Two written spelling tests were administered to narrow the pool of winners,
and an oral spelling bee was given in classrooms. Fourteen finalists were then invited to compete at the finalist level. Serving as spelling bee moderator, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald read each word and a corresponding sentence to the contestants, while Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Debbie Rifkin served as judge. The students were so well-
prepared that a second and much harder list of words was needed. “You are all winners and should be proud of yourselves,” Mr. Speranza told the students, who each received a certificate of participation. Principal Dr. George Maurer said the school will display a plaque on one of its walls and engraved with each first-place winner for years to come.
Winning PSAs MacArthur High School students were firstplace winners in Nassau County’s High School Drug Awareness Public Service Announcement Contest as part of the National Red Ribbon Campaign. MacArthur High School students Max Cohen, Samantha Marrero, Alex Philbin and Ashley Simoes created a 30-second PSA
titled “End The Stigma,” while Division Avenue High School students Kevin Granger, Erin McCauley, Alexa Nania and Nathaly Sanches won honorable mention for their PSA titled “Love Yourself-Be Drug Free.” Sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, the goal of the second annual county-wide PSA contest,
in which 125 students from 10 high schools competed, was to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal and prescription drugs and risk-taking behaviors. Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano congratulated the winners at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola on February 5th.

The annual contest encourages students to examine American history by writing a 300to 400-word essay on a patriotic theme. The 20142015 theme was “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans.” Essays were judged on knowledge of the

100 Days Smarter up like centenarians. Some classes charted 100 steps in the hallway with a paper footprint and predicted where their 100 steps would end. At Forest Lake, students predicted how many beanbags they could throw in 100 seconds into the hole of a beanbag throw game. Classes read poems and books, including Karen Fenstermaker’s “100 Animals” and Margery
Cuyler’s “100th Day Worries.” Using a scale, they also predicted which 100 objects (nickels, paper clips, candy, etc.) weighed more and recorded their results. “Each of the teachers was extremely creative in coming up with 100 Day activities, making this day one to remember,” Forest Lake Principal Anthony Ciuffo said.
Levittown’s Division Avenue High School Science Olympiad team, under the direction of teacher Gerard Marzigliano, secured a sixth-place ranking at the Nassau East Science Olympiad Regional Competition at Wantagh High School and will now compete at the New York State Finals at LeMoyne College in Syracuse on March 13th-14th. During the regionals, the team acquired medals in 15 out of 20 events, qualifying for the statelevel competition for the seventh consecutive year. MacArthur High School’s Science Olympiad team also made a strong showing at the regional competition, winning 14 medals in seven events, but will not advance to the New York State finals this season. Coming To Life In celebration of Presidents Day, Summit Lane students in Levittown became more acquainted with Civil War President Abraham Lincoln during an interactive dramatic program with actor and storyteller Lou Del Bianco. The presentation taught
students about Lincoln’s childhood, values and unwavering drive to become an educated man. Mr. Del Bianco, dressed in a period black suit and top hat, drove home the ideal of “perseverance” to describe Lincoln’s outlook on life.

Respect Is A-Ok Prior to Valentine’s Day, Mandalay Elementary School students in the Wantagh School District attended a PTA-sponsored assembly with The Uncle Brothers, Tommy Gardner and Axel Belohoubek, about being kind and respectful. “We are all different, and we want to celebrate that,” Gardner
said. The duo performed a number of their songs, including tongue twister “Bubba the Bully” and “Just Say No To Drugs.” Each song reinforced the notion of respect to oneself, others, our country and education. The Uncle Brothers also encouraged the students to perform
