other competitions with trophies awarded. Dennis Dunne also spoke on a new exhibit that will, eventually, be in the lobby of Levittown Memorial pertaining to our Veterans. There will be memorabilia that has been collected from families that have had members in the Armed Forces. Superintendent Tonie McDonald is on board and in favor. It will be our military project and salute to Levittown Veterans. Signs of Spring And just like that, the snow has melted and signs of spring have begun to sprout here and there, signaling the end of hibernation and the beginning of so many wonderful things in this second season of the year. Of course, we are not completely out of the frozen woods yet; but it certainly is nice to feel the warmth of the sun in the month of February nonetheless. Last year, March brought with it a robin’s nest, complete with four perfect blue eggs, to my grandparents’ house. I often wonder if one of the babies will return this spring to lay its own batch of eggs and continue the line of fuzzy birds born in that backyard. So many wonderful memories took place in that very spot… how fitting that new life

should be born there as well. I recently picked up a bunch of tulips and roses while shopping, deciding that the post-holiday season barrenness of my apartment could use a little splash of color to liven things up. It’s amazing what a bowl of flowers can do to improve the atmosphere of a room… how I do love to snip and arrange fresh blooms in vases on occasion. It’s times like these that I wish I had a real garden of my own to tend; but alas, decks are really only conducive to the standard potted plant. I am certainly looking forward to heading out this spring and exploring the beaches and parks of Long Island as they come back to life. Aside from the exercise these random, meandering strolls encourage, they

The Students Against Destructive Decisions Club at Grand Avenue Middle School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District has been focused on making positive impacts and contributions to their community. “We look at positive ways to promote citizenship and be positive student leaders who do not have to rely on drugs and alcohol to feel good or to be accepted,” said teacher and club adviser Pia Santadonato. During their Mugs of Love project, the club collected more than 200 gently used mugs to donate to the Interfaith Nutrition

Network’s Freeport site in mid-February. They packaged up the mugs with various pantry food items. The INN feeds approximately 100 people each day and is completely run by volunteers. With their Wrapped in Love project, students delivered nearly 40 handmade baby blankets to the neonatal unit at Winthrop-University Hospital. “These blankets will be used to keep the babies warm and the babies will be able to take the blanket home with them when they are released from the hospital,” Santadonato

explained. Their recent Candy Gram project, spearheaded by eighth-grader Jordyn Krinsky, will benefit the Free to Breathe group to raise money for lung cancer research. “My grandmother was diagnosed with lung cancer last year and I wanted to fundraise for research,” she said. “The organization is working to double the current survivor rate.” With these projects and others, Santadonato said she hopes the students enjoy the feeling that comes along with doing something positive in the world.

Cayla Conley, a senior at John F. Kennedy High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District, recently shattered a school record during the track and field conference championship. Conley, clearing 7 feet, 6-inches in the pole vault, was an entire foot higher than the previous record. “I’ve always had a love for running,” she said. “It allows me to express any emotion that I’m feeling at the time.”

Third-graders in Jessica Pirozzi’s class at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District have taken writing to the next level. The students recently published their own narrative stories after learning about author and illustrator Patricia Polacco, who has written more than

140 books. Each child created a picture book based on an experience that has happened in his or her life. After completing a rough draft, students then edited and revised their stories. They made sure to include narrative elements such as dialogue. Students drew a picture and glued a sentence

strip on each page. They also created their own covers and title pages. The finished products were showcased during a classwide publishing celebration. Ms. Pirozzi said that she came up with the idea for picture books to expand upon the North Bellmore new Writer’s Workshop initiative through Schoolwide Units of Study. Love of Sports Seventh- and eighthgraders at Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District put their love for sports into practice as they raised money for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The school’s athletic department hosted two fundraisers to benefit

the causes - a powder puff football game and a volleyball tournament. Assistant Principals Patricia Graham and Christine Egan led two teams of students for the football game. Students, teachers and administrators paid $2 to watch the game on the school’s football field,

raising a total of $780 for Memorial Sloan Kettering. On January 3rd, the girls volleyball team held a round-robin tournament, where teams played each other for five minutes in elimination rounds until two final teams were set to play. The tournament raised $200 for St. Jude.

Aspirations Honored Division Avenue High School seniors Danielle Mahn and Sejal Mehra are 2017 Greater New York City Affiliate winners of the National Center for Women and Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing. Chartered by the National Science Foundation, NCWIT is an 850-member community of corporations, academic institutions, government agencies and nonprofit organizations working to increase girls’ and women’s

participation in technology and computing. The Aspirations in Computing award honors high school women who are active in computing and technology through their demonstrated interest in and achievements in computing, proven leadership abilities, academic performance and plans for secondary education. Both Danielle and Sejal are enrolled in the school’s Advanced Placement computer

science principles, science research II and technology research lab courses. Danielle would eventually like to start a Women in Technology Club at the college or university she will attend this coming fall. Sejal plans on pursuing a career as a computer engineer. More than Baskets W.T. Clarke Middle School students in the East Meadow School District raised more than $800 for the American Heart Association by participating in the schoolwide Hoops for Heart program from January 23rd to 27th. According to its website, the American Heart Association is the nation’s oldest and largest

voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. To assist in the battle, schools can host Jump Rope for Heart or Hoops for Heart fundraisers that promote physical activity, heart healthy living and community service. During their gym classes, students rotated among stations to enhance

their basketball skills by practicing ball control and making jump shots and layups. Afterward, the classes participated in a knockout tournament, eliminating each other by scoring baskets before their opponent until two finalists were left to face off in a championship matchup.

Eight students from John F. Kennedy and Sanford H. Calhoun high schools in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District were selected as semifinalists to present their research at the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium at York College on February 5th. This is the first time in Kennedy’s history that all who submitted were

selected as semifinalists. Kennedy students Max Bazil, Arin Forstadt, Claire Kelly, Jennifer Rakhimov, Michael Sternbach and Perri Zilberman were joined by Calhoun students Samantha Hernandez and Sara Samir. Based on their scientific research presentations, Forstadt and Kelly of Kennedy were selected as finalists and will compete at York College on

February 19th. JSHS is designed to challenge and engage high school students in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Individual students compete for scholarships and recognition by presenting the results of their original research efforts before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers.

In It for Life The Bellmore Elementary PTA presented 15 individuals with New York State PTA Life Membership awards during the annual Founders Day Celebration held on February 7th at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center. Honorary NYS State Memberships are the highest honor the PTA can bestow on an individual and is given to those who have made a significant contribution to the welfare of children. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Famularo thanked each of the recipients for their dedication to the students. “It is about the children of the community,” he said. “Tonight we celebrate the adults who have dedicated

invaluable time in our community of learners.” After each of the recipients was called up to the podium, family members filed onto the stage with flowers and hugs. The evening was also punctuated with performances by the Reinhard Rising Star Chorus, the Winthrop Avenue CharACTer Drama Club, Shore Road Chorale and members of the Ukulele Club. To top off the evening, Dr. Famularo and the Belltones entertained all who attended this cherished Bellmore tradition. Eighth-grade students in Richard Zawislak’s French class at Grand Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District celebrated Chandeleur Day. Betsy Siegelaub, a retired Bellmore-Merrick French teacher, visited Mr. Zawislak’s class to teach them all about the holiday. Similar to Groundhog Day, Chandeleur Day (La Chandeleur) is also on February 2nd and has traditions associated with

the change of weather. Students learned about the history and importance of the day, listened to music and played games to celebrate the day. But the “piece de resistance” was the making of the crepes, which is treat eaten on the holiday. Students filled their crepes with various jams, Nutella and whipped cream and enjoyed chatting with Mrs. Siegelaub. To end the day, the students tried their hand

at flipping the crepes to see how the rest of the winter season will fair. “Quand la Chandeleur est claire, l’hiver est par derrière; Chandeleur couverte, quarante jours de perte!” (If Chandeleur is clear, no more winter to fear; If Chandeleur is gray, 40 more days winter will stay.) According to the Chandeleur Day celebrations at Grand Avenue, it looks like spring will come late this year.

Reading Inspiration Children and their families came together to celebrate literacy during an evening program on February 7th at Martin Avenue School in the North Bellmore School District. The first Camp Read A Lot, organized by the school’s Shared Decision Making Team, was a success with more than 140 “campers” attending. Teachers and parents worked together to plan activities. The special guest was a 16-year-old published author, Yasmine Hamdi, who wrote “Spirit of the Wind.” She discussed

the writing process, held a question and answer session and signed copies of her book. “It was really cool to have the professional author there,” said fifth-grader Lara Ismailescu. “She was only a few years older than us so it was inspiring to see that she is a real author at 16.” There was a read aloud which featured new books such as “Finding Winnie” and “The Day the Crayons Quit,” as well as classic stories like “The Giving Tree.” Breakout sessions included literacy games, a

primary reader room and video book chats. A popular event was Book Buddies, in which the sixth-graders read to younger students. “Camp Read A Lot was such a rewarding event to be a part of, and I am immensely proud of the work that was put into making the evening such a resounding success,” said Principal Leyna Malone. “This event is what Shared Decision Making is all about - teachers, administrators and parents working together to make Martin Avenue a great place to be.”

Judge’s Award Wisdom Lane Middle School Roboteers received the Judge’s Award for the robotics team’s design and program skills during the Vex Robotics Competition Qualifier held at Freeport High School. Coach David Loveland said team members prepared for five months and worked for hundreds of hours optimizing the design of

their robot. In preparation for competition, students used their knowledge of engineering, science and mathematics to make modifications to a stock Vex robot, being careful to remain within the set rules of the competition. Teams then competed on a playing field, making their robots perform specific

tasks. The theme of this year’s competition is Star Gazer, and students were required to knock foam stars off of a ledge and pick them up or knock them out of the playing field. The Levittown School District congratulates the students on this outstanding accomplishment.

and coordinating the annual event. “Thank you to everyone who made today’s Braille Challenge a success,” she said. “This day could not have happened without all of your hard work, dedication and commitment. I am so proud of all these students and am blown away by their amazing ability to read and write in Braille.” Following, students had the opportunity to participate in three interactive workshops. In the first, they practiced martial arts and selfdefense techniques with Sensei Devin Fernandez from Third Eye Insight in West Islip. With the help of volunteers, participants learned defensive moves using their knees, fists and elbows. The students transitioned to the classroom for the second workshop, where they displayed their proficiency in reading, writing and comprehending in Braille. They also created Valentines using cookie cutters, metallic paper and stickers. During the third activity, students met and played with members of the Long Island Bombers Beep Baseball team, a group of players who demonstrate their version of baseball by using beeping baseballs and bases. The young

students ran the bases and located the baseball from the sound of its buzzing. At the closing ceremony, the students received Braille Institute medallions, certificates of recognition and goody bags for participating in this year’s 10th annual Braille Challenge. Participants and their families also attended a brunch graciously provided by the East Meadow Special Education PTA. Among the participants in the Braille Challenge were Meadowbrook Elementary School second-grader Kayla Ochtera, Bowling Green Elementary School thirdgrader Matthew Palmeri and Woodland Middle School seventh-grader Robbie Stahl. The regional event is the first step toward the national competition, which will be held in June at the Braille Institute’s headquarters in Los Angeles. Students from across the nation are in the process of completing preliminary testing in the hopes of qualifying among the top-scoring 60 contestants. Those top scorers will advance to nationals to represent their state as they compete against the best Braille students from across the United States and Canada.

Advancing to State Wantagh High School’s Science Olympiad Team A placed sixth out of 44 teams, with Team B trailing in eighth place, in the regional competition held at Wantagh High School on January 30th. Team A will now advance

to the New York State competition, to be held at Le Moyne College in Syracuse in March. The annual Science Olympiad competition includes more than 20 various science events and challenges students

Helping through Health

A trip to a remote Tanzanian village where his parents grew up when he was 10 years old propelled Sanford H. Calhoun senior Hadi Aziz into becoming a social activist. “They were lacking the medical necessity found in basic first aid kits and it was then that I knew I wanted to help these people,” said the Calhoun Advanced Science Research student. Determined to make a difference, he approached the school’s senior experience Fashion Show board last year with his presentation. The board annually selects a philanthropic organization to donate their proceeds. His proposed organization, Safe Motherhood Project, which aims to improve

maternal health status, was selected and received $10,000 that was raised from the Fashion Show. Earlier this year, he was able to visit Kibaha, Tanzania where he saw first-hand how the funds were used - a newly created consultation room and pre/post-natal care clinic at Medewell Health Center. During his brief visit, a mother had given birth and he said he “was so grateful to see the happiness” on her face. Aziz speaks the region’s native Swahili and was able to learn more about their former available healthcare. “This clinic now offers prenatal and postnatal care to this impoverished part of the country,” he said. “It’s amazing that we can

see how much we impacted a community 3,000 miles away from Calhoun,” he added. “We essentially brought this level of care to the community that was previously unavailable.” The trip, which was self-funded, was further evidence that Aziz wishes to pursue a career in the medical field one day and travel the world to help those in these types of communities. This year, Aziz hopes to be selected again as the Fashion Show’s beneficiary. This time his proposed organization will be the Medewell Eye Clinic, which provides on site consultation eye care and cataract surgeries in East African communities. “Going to an optometrist is considered a luxury here and many suffer from blindness conditions that are treatable,” Aziz explained. “To be able to give these people the gift of sight would be the best gift I could give.” Photo courtesy of: Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District

Three students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have been named finalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Alaina Anderson of Sanford H. Calhoun High School, Maximilian Bazil of John F. Kennedy High School and Rachel Jozwick of Wellington C. Mepham High School all received this distinction. “We are proud of the

exemplary students who received this prestigious honor,” said Superintendent John DeTommaso. “In addition to being strong in academics, they have each contributed greatly to their school community.” The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. High school students enter the

National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Approximately 15,000 students or about one-third of the 50,000 high scorers qualified as finalists. From here, approximately 7,500 students will be notified of various monetary, corporate-sponsored or college-sponsored awards.

St. Baldrick’s Event

Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District will host its annual Chop Your Lock’s for Charity event to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation on March 21st, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the gym. “Over the past 10 years, the Calhoun High School community has been an incredible supporter of this wonderful event,”

said teacher and event co-organizer Melissa Rohr. “School community members can get involved by shaving their heads, cutting their locks or donating to the cause. “In addition, Calhoun faculty and staff have been tremendous in garnering support for the event by promoting it among their students, teams and clubs, as well as coming out the night of the event in full

support,” said teacher and co-organizer Joseph Bianca. The money raised goes directly to the St. Baldrick’s foundation, which aims to fund research which helps find cures and treatment for childhood cancers. In April, their Pascagoula counterparts will visit Merrick, spending a day at Calhoun High School as well. The trip was partially funded by students’ fundraising but the remainder is being financed individually. “We’ve already been talking to them about what they want to do when they are here and most of them have never been to New York City, so that seems to be on the top of the list,” added Roberts.

Over 100 Nassau BOCES Barry Tech students from the school’s Healthcare Classes came together recently for an anticyberbully workshop. Cyberbullying remains a hot topic since recent reports claim that 43% of teenagers have been bullied online over the past year. These statistics prompted students and staff to view the movie, Cyberbully, and reflect on how the issue effects them in their everyday digital lives. Students referred to a specially created Movie Viewing Guide as they watched the video, which was followed by a discussion led by the school’s social worker, Nancy Tuck. Eleven students have been chosen by their peers to represent Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the first leg of a cultural exchange trip to Pascagoula, Mississippi. This is the first time any school in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District has participated in such a program. “We Facetimed with our host students and exchanged videos explaining what school life is like for each of us,” explained Caitlyn Tolchin. The students, who depart on February 23rd, are from the Leadership Class, which promotes community service and fosters leadership skills among students. They will double up with host families and spend one day shadowing their southern counterparts at school.
