The John F. Kennedy and Sanford H. Calhoun science departments in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District each fielded Science Olympiad teams that earned high rankings at the Nassau East Regional Science Olympiad held on February 3rd at Wantagh High School. The Kennedy Science Olympiad Team A placed 12th out of 43 teams and Team B placed 17th. At

the regional competition, Cougar Science Olympians earned medals in 12 events: Chemistry Lab, eighth place, Matt Molzon and James Hayes; Disease Detectives, ninth place, Katherine St. George and Mikaela Milch; Duct Tape Challenge, third place, Marielena Delgado and Cecelia Hayes; Fermi Questions, 10th place, Aidan Benjamin and Andrew Kessler; Game

Named a Reward School New York State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia has named Wantagh High School as one of the state’s 155 Reward Schools. Reward Schools are schools with high academic achievement or those with the most progress in the state and do not have significant gaps in student achievement between subgroups. To be identified as a Reward School for high performance, for which Wantagh High School has been identified, a school must meet the following requirements: Be among the top 20 percent of schools in the state for English language arts and math performance for both the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school years, or be among the top 10 percent of schools in terms of gains in ELA and math performance in the 2016-2017 school year. Have made Adequate Yearly Progress for the 2015-2016 school years for all groups of students on all measures for which the school is accountable, including the requirement that 95 percent of all

groups participate in the English language arts and mathematics assessments. Not have unacceptably large gaps in student performance on an accountability measure between students who are members of an accountability group (e.g., low-income students) and students who are not members of that group. Must have a graduation rate above 80 percent, and the percentage of students who graduate with a Regents diploma with advanced designation or a Career and Technical Endorsement (CTE) must exceed the state average. Must demonstrate that their graduation rate for students who entered the school performing below proficient in ELA or math exceeds the state average. Superintendent of Schools John C. McNamara noted that the collaboration of students and faculty contributed to this prestigious honor. “Best instructional practices inspire students to strive for success, and I could not be prouder of this significant achievement,” he said.

County Qualiﬁers Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s John F. Kennedy High School wrestling team had 11 wrestlers qualify for the recent Nassau County Championships. Of those 11, five earned All-County honors by placing in the top six in their weight class. Greg Brach finished

in fifth place; Brandon Mercado and Dan Shafron each finished in third place; and Boaz Smart and Jack Krug both competed for the county championship, finishing in second place. Krug lost 1211 in a challenging match that went into overtime. “We had a memorable season with a great

group of kids who loved wrestling,” said coach Brian DeGaetano. “Their hard work earned them one of the best seasons in 10 years for Kennedy. Families came out in full force to enjoy this year’s 17th annual WinterFest, a hallmark event hosted by Levittown Community Council at Levittown Hall on February 3rd. The theme of this year’s event was Broadway and guests were treated to show tunes sung by vocalist Vanessa Alvera and projections of a wide variety of musical shows with accompanying music by deejay Jim Wilson of Rhythm Force Entertainment. Off Broadway was a delightful puppet show by Partyloons that children laughed with and danced to enthusiastically. Local organizations exhibited and attracted people to their tables by offering a free activity. More than 100 prize bas-

kets were distributed via a raffle for which each adult received five free raffle tickets when they entered the venue. Basket were made up predominantly from merchandise donated by local merchants and individuals. A Super Raffle of prizes including a 5-burner barbecue, microwave, $100 worth of lottery tickets, a recon vehicle and drone donated by Home Depot, Jay’s Appliances, Sal V. Tartaglione, Architect, Susan Martin, CPA and Dalton Funeral Homes respectively drew the attention of a large group of participants. The event is possible by the generosity of local businesses, donations of individuals and Council members’ dues, which are $10 a person, $15 for a

family and $50 for an organization or business. Children participated throughout the day in free arts and crafts activities, were entertained by face painters and temporary tattoos artists. Sweet Messages Various student groups and classes from the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District once again came together to promote a common message of acceptance and anti-discrimination. Held on February 9th, P.S. I Love You Day, was created in 2011 as a nonprofit organization to spread love in order to decrease bullying and promote mental health awareness. At Wellington C. Mepham High School, members of Jackie Geller’s School Community Leadership class encouraged friends to send positive messages to classmates throughout the day. “We also hand wrote positive messages on paper hearts for the entire

student body and attached a Life Saver candy to each one,” explained Mepham student Lauren Lasker. “We even personalized them for all of the faculty members to let them know we appreciate them,” added Kayleigh Specht. John F. Kennedy High School Key Club and adviser Jessica Chilton, along with the Gay Straight Alliance and Student Government members joined forces to make and sell purple ribbons to raise money for the organization. They planned on it being a daylong effort, but quickly sold out. “They also created posters with positive messages that were hung around the building,” Chilton added.

At Sanford H. Calhoun High School, ENL teacher Heather Glick’s International Buddy Club hosted a similarly aligned Step Up, Stand Up challenge. “This event aims to help each person have their own voice to promote peace, love and acceptance toward others,” explained Glick. “Whether it’s through music, poetry or really any form of expression, we encourage everyone to attend and help us spread awareness and love.” Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools also supported P.S. I Love You Day, donning purple attire to support the effort.

Elementary school students throughout the district visit the center, located at the Levittown Memorial Education

Center, to engage in hands-on science activities and lessons. The center includes a pond, greenhouse and indoor and outdoor classrooms. Recently, the students have been furthering their knowledge on the seasons, greenhouses and the environment. During the board meeting, the kindergarten students explained the tools they have utilized during those lessons and their favorite

experiences at the center. A Unique Boutique with a Selfless Cause Amanda Munz, founder of The Fashion Foundation, started a non-profit in 2014 to sell fashion apparel at a reasonable price and, more importantly, to help provide students with school supplies. As someone who has always loved fashion, Amanda decided to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising, she went on to receive a Master’s degree in Public Administration. While getting her feet wet in the fashion industry, she constantly took note of people throwing fashion apparel in the garbage, as well as samples building up that designers didn’t know what to do with. This inspired her to start The Fashion Foundation, where she utilizes those pieces by selling them at a reasonable price, and then pays it forward by using the profits earned to purchase school supplies for students to help them succeed. Today, Munz runs a showroom in Farmingdale, as well as a pop-up showroom in Manhattan, where new apparel can be purchased for a fraction of its retail cost. Many items are also available for purchase on her website, www.TheFashionFoundation.org. To this day, she has received thousands of pieces from fashion companies and helped countless students succeed. The Fashion Foundation has purchased clean uniforms, notebooks, art

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Ian Mugambi, a 12 year-old boy in need of a sponsor. Ian lost his mother and sister and currently resides at this orphanage in Meru. For further details on mentoring Ian or another child, please contact Aida Mann at AidaMann@optonline.com. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and Aida often travel to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to come along so they can meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case. Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

Fidelity Award As a school committed to the development of a positive learning environment, Woodland Middle School, in the East Meadow School District has received the Silver Fidelity Award from the International Alliance for Invitational Education. In 2016, Woodland earned the Inviting School award from the IAIE for

Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s Wellington C. Mepham High School’s chapter of the National Italian Honor Society hosted its 16th annual Italian Culture Night under the direction of adviser and Italian teacher, Kristen Montuori. The evening was filled with music, poetry, games and food. Honor Society President Olivia Larocchia sang the classic, “Io che non vivo.” The theme of the evening was Carnevale and guests were treated to mask making and a

poem recitation by society member Amanda LaRossa about the Italian holiday. “Guests wore their masks throughout the evening, simulating a true Italian Carnevale,” said World Languages Chairperson Rosa Kaplan. “The evening also included the annual game of Tombola, an Italian style-bingo, led by honor society officers, Joe Lozito and Gavin Dass.” The Italian Honor Society would like to thank all of the Mepham families as well as the local businesses that helped to make the event successful

The Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s John F. Kennedy Girls 4X800-meter relay team nabbed the Nassau County Championship during their meet on February 7th, earning the school its first title in nearly 15 years. The relay team includes

juniors Jillian Conlon and Alicia Prainito, freshman Maya Spottiswood and Merrick Avenue Middle School eighth-grader Marissa Spottiswood. Maya also earned AllCounty status in the 1,500-meter by placing third a mere 40 minutes

before her championship relay. “With no seniors, these four girls will only be getting faster over the next few seasons,” said Chris Mammone, who is head coach. Barbara Green is the assistant coach.

Boys Basketball Tournament

St. Raphael CYO will host its 11th annual Winter Classic Boys Basketball Tournament for youth teams, 4-8 grade, from February 15th-25th at their parish gymnasium on 600 Newbridge Road in East Meadow. The tournament is one of the premier events on Long Island held in February at the culmination of the boys CYO campaign that has garnered rave reviews from coaches, parents and players in the Nassau and Suffolk County communities. each festival is an accomplishment that brings together Long Island’s most talented musicians. The district congratulates the students for their leadership in the music program.

Selected to Sing

Tess Kurtzman, an eighth-grade studentmusician at Wantagh Middle School, has been selected to perform with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York’s European Tour this coming summer. Under the baton of MYO conductor Shoshana Hershkowitz, Tess will perform on Long Island prior to a two-week stint in Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Vienna and Budapest. The MYO fosters a community of talented

young musicians from Long Island with opportunities to rehearse and perform choral and orchestral masterworks at the highest level possible with recognized leaders in musical education and performance. Tess explained that she first applied for a place with the MYO when she was in fourth grade and was accepted to perform with the choral group the following year. Since her association with the MYO, Tess has performed in

Carnegie Hall twice and says she still gets a thrill out of the experience. “It is such a fun experience to perform in front of such a large audience,” she said. “It is also a thrill to share the experience with the choir.” Tess, who is a soprano, is a four-time All-County musician, president of the a capella club and a member of the school’s drama club, where she has performed in “The Adams Family” and “Mary Poppins.” She is also a member of the St. Francis Theatre Group with whom she has performed in “Shrek” and “Legally Blonde.” Although singing is her passion, Tess is also learning to play the piano and is currently taking a music production class. There was no need for Punxsutawney Phil in Rich Zawislak’s eighthgrade French class on February 2nd; students celebrated Groundhog Day French style instead. Known as La Chandeleur or Chandeleur Day, students learned the day was originally the religious holiday of Candlemas that is now simply enjoyed by making (and eating) crêpes with some fortune telling. La Chandeleur resembles Groundhog Day because certain signs of the crepe can indicate whether harsh winter weather is nearly over or

will continue. Betsy Siegelaub, a retired Bellmore-Merrick French teacher, visited Zawislak’s class at Grand Avenue Middle School to teach the students about the holiday. “Students learned about the history and importance of the day, listened to music, and played games to celebrate,” explained world languages chairperson Renée Fallon. “The pièce de résistance was the making of the crêpes. Students filled their crêpes with various jams, Nutella and whipped cream, and enjoyed chatting with Mrs. Siegelaub in French,”

added Zawislak. To end the day, the students tried their hand at flipping the crêpes to see what the rest of this winter has in store — “Quand la Chandeleur est claire, l’hiver est par derrière; Chandeleur couverte, quarante jours de perte.” Translated to English: “If Chandeleur is clear, no more winter to fear. If Chandeleur is gray, 40 more days winter will stay.” The results? According the Chandeleur Day celebrations at Grand Avenue, it looks like spring will arrive early this year.

Injured teddy bears were lined up at Searingtown Elementary School in Albertson yesterday as kindergarteners took on the roles of doctors and nurses to treat the injuries. Slings were made, cuts tended to, and teddy bear pulses were checked. It was all part of a free “Teddy Bear Clinic” orchestrated by NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Trauma Center to teach young members of the community about injury prevention, treatment, and to educate them on the medical profession. The children brought in their favorite teddy bear or other stuffed animal, with NYU Winthrop providing equipment for the students to dress up as doctors and nurses. Adelphi University nursing students pitched in, dressed in scrubs and with stethoscopes to assist in treating the injured bears. “We teach children how to take safety into their own hands such as by wearing bike helmets, seat belts, and stopping at stop signs,” said Ellen Berghorn, RN, who heads NYU Winthrop’s Pediatric Injury Prevention Program. “We also teach students that the medical world is really not so scary, and the children’s handson experience treating injured bears helps bring that to light.” “This program is an

Unintentional pedestrian injuries are the fifth leading cause of injury-related deaths for children ages 5 to 19, with teens particularly at risk. Safe Kids Worldwide emphasizes the need for children of all ages to put down phones and take off headphones when crossing the street. Two students in Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s Sanford H. Calhoun High School’s Advanced Science Research program were recipients of a $200 research grant each for their recent research proposals. Courtney Lange, 18, and Amelia Seabold, 17, both of Merrick, were awarded $200 NYIT Mini Research Grants. “The Life Sciences faculty review committee has determined your submission to have scientific merit and potential impact, and we are confident your studies will contribute to the field of science and technology,” stated the grant award letters. Lange’s research, The Poweroff Study, delves into how a common natural dietary supplement affects sleep quality. Her study is being conducted at NYU Langone. “Sleep quality is something that affects everyone,” Lange said of her research. “I wanted to learn more through the study, which is currently in the recruitment phase.”

Duo Awarded Research Grant

Special Art Project Fifteen art students in Carissa Roche’s classes at John F. Kennedy High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central School District volunteered to participate in charitable art mission that aims to affect children halfway across the globe. Students drew or painted the portraits of 15 Syrian refugee children for the nonprofit organization, Memory Project. “The portraits will be delivered back to the Syrian children, then we will receive a video of the children receiving the artwork, seeing firsthand the joy it brings them,” Roche explained. For the students, it is an opportunity to creatively

practice kindness and global awareness. For the Syrian children, the portraits help them feel valued and important, while also receiving a keepsake for years to come. Students in grades 9-12 participated on a volunteer basis. There was no reward other than “knowing they were doing something kind to create a positive memory for someone less fortunate,” Roche explained. “I am very proud of the students who chose to participate in a selfless act to bring a little joy to underprivileged children who they will never know or meet,” said Roche. “It was worth being able to put a smile on their faces by recreating them on a

paper,” said sophomore Gianna Venero. Since March 2011, conflict has devastated Syria, gravely affecting millions of children. “As we went through this process of creating the portraits, we became very intimate with the children’s faces. As you look directly into their eyes, you know you are taking part in something special,” added Roche. Students couldn’t help but think about their subjects’ struggles. “It is powerful knowing what I could do with a piece of paper and some colored pencils,” said junior Renata Davi. “Maybe the little girl that I drew has a bigger story than we all know.”

World Read-Aloud Day In celebration of World Read Aloud Day on February 1st, first-graders in Jamie Lyn Celeste’s class at Wantagh Elementary School paid a digital visit to Virginia author Sue Fliess. During the video and audio chat, Ms. Fliess read her soon to be released book “Mary Had a Little Lab,” the story of which is based on “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”

Sponsored by nonprofit organization LitWorld, World Read Aloud Day encourages people throughout the world to read aloud together and share stories to advocate for literacy. According to LitWorld, 750 million adults lack basic reading and writing skills. In addition, reading aloud to children every day puts them ahead by almost a

year of children who do not receive daily read alouds. “Mary Had a Little Lab” will be released in March, so the students were lucky to have the opportunity to hear the book read out loud prior to being released to the public. They also had time to ask her questions about her other popular books and her reasons for becoming an author.

Honing Their Coding

As part of districtwide recognition of Computer Science Week, students throughout the Merrick School District participated in the nationwide Hour of Code. Students from Birch, Chatterton and

Levy Lakeside schools all learned how to use block coding and programmed small robots to make controlled movements and perform functions at their command.

The Hour of Code is a global movement designed to inspire coding. Schools are encouraged to organize activities that help teach students to code and make it fun.

Firstand secondgraders at Chatterton School in Merrick have been learning the strategic art of chess thanks to a program sponsored by the school’s PTA Cultural Arts committee. The Long Island Chess Nuts are working with students for four consecutive weeks to instruct them on the rules of the game while providing

them with opportunities to demonstrate what they have learned by playing their peers. Long Island Chess Nuts is a non-profit scholastic chess club with over 2,000 members, learning and playing chess throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties with the goal of promoting the educational and positive

benefits of chess to all children. Programs are held in over 50 schools and 45 libraries throughout the year. Studies have shown that chess increases reading and math levels and also hones concentration, strategy skills, selfesteem and confidence in young children.

The works of these talented individuals were judged among more than 330,000 submissions to the annual competition which recognizes excellence in writing and art. The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers is a nonprofit organization that identifies exceptional artistic and literary talent of students. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition, which dates

back to 1923, allows teenagers in grades 7-12 to submit works in 27 categories for judging by luminaries in the visual and literary arts. The roster of past winners includes Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote and Joyce Carol Oates. Students Erin Hogarty (drawing/illustration and mixed media), Emily Kalinoglu (photography), Dean Savridis (photography), Athena Yao (drawing/illustration, comic art, painting and sculpture) and Helen Yao (sculpture) were selected as Gold Key winners, and their works will be further considered for national recognition. Nicolette Marciana (drawing/illustration),

Kaitlyn O’Connor (drawing/illustration) Athena Yao (painting) and Helen Yao (fashion) received Silver Key Awards. In addition, Melissa Cruz (drawing/ illustration), Erin Hogarty (drawing/illustration), Gabrielle Marciana (drawing/illustration), Isabelle Samudio (drawing/illustration), Stephanie Tracy (drawing /illustration), Athena Yao (fashion) and Helen Yao (drawing/illustration) received honorable mention awards. Practicing the Method

It was an evening of exploration and discovery as Winthrop Avenue thirdgrade students in the Bellmore School District showcased their innovative and colorful experiments and presentations during the school’s annual thirdgrade science fair.

Principal Sally Curto said, “The annual science fair is a great opportunity for the students to explore scientific concepts that they are interested in and to share their results with peers.” The goal of the activity was for students to try their

hands at experiments that are safe and practical and to share their results with administrators, faculty, family and peers. Students explored a variety of topics including the creation of slime, static electricity, heart health, magnets and more.

Earth Day Cleanup

How do you celebrate Earth Day? Each year, Levittown Community Council, in conjunction with the Town of Hempstead, hosts a clean up event to bring to light the coming of Spring and the importance of maintaining our local environment. Areas in and around the boundaries of the Levittown and Island Trees school districts receive the benefits of the project. The areas to be cleaned this year will be limited to four or five and the Council is seeking suggestions on places that are in dire need but which are safe for volunteers to work. Teaming Up for Success

Developing their teamwork skills, Woodland Middle School students in the East Meadow School District recently participated in Mix It Up Day and team building activities. The Social Emotional Learning Committee held a decades-themed Mix It Up Day for sixth- and seventhgraders during their lunch periods to meet new people, develop their social skills and work in teams. During their homeroom period,

the students received different colored bracelets that grouped them with new peers. Together, they took part in activities identifying toys, characters and songs from the 1950s to the 2000s. Additionally, throughout the day, eighth-graders practiced their team building skills with exercises and gaming applications. Working collaboratively to accomplish a common goal, they participated in

activities such as human rock, paper, scissors and land mine travel, where teams had to direct their classmates across a field of “land mines” without stepping on a mine or bumping into another competitor. The students also participated in icebreaker speed chatting and activities related to science, technology, engineering, the arts and math.
