Tips for Enjoying a Drive-In Movie Experience

(StatePoint) Social distancing guidelines across the country have made visiting a conventional movie theater difficult, if not impossible. However, what was once a relic of the past has now become an innovation in entertainment, the drivein movie theater. The drive-in movie theater is nearly as old as the automobile itself. While today, there are about 300 drive-in theaters across the country, many more are popping up wherever there is space. Indeed, Walmart recently announced more than 160 of its parking lots will be converted into drive-in movie theaters around the country and many small businesses are doing the same. “A drive-in movie is the ideal event for anyone with a car because they can get out for a drive to enjoy a common experience with friends and family while taking appropriate social distancing precautions,” says Rah Mahtani, marketing communications manager

for MINI USA. To shed light on this rediscovered institution of cinema, MINI USA created a guide for drivers to help them make the most of the experience. Here are five of their top tips: 1. Arrive early. Many theaters allow guests to arrive up to an hour before the show begins. Take advantage of this time to pick the best parking spot and stretch your legs. The nostalgia and magic of drive-in movies returns for a third installment to Town Park Point Lookout for a special “Winter Break” film series in February. As many schools across America’s largest township will be on a one-week hiatus for the annual “winter break,” between February 12th and February 21st, Supervisor Don Clavin and the Hempstead Town Board invite residents of all ages to enjoy a week of free entertainment at Town Park Point Lookout from the comfort and safety of their vehicles. Extending the Town of Hempstead’s ongoing efforts to provide safe, COVID friendly entertainment throughout the summer, fall and now into the winter, Supervisor Clavin and the Town Board are excited to provide families with a fun option while children are home for a week in the middle of February. The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. Below is a list of all of the programs that the BBCC offers. Lend A Helping Hand (LAHH): This unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for breast cancer and all types of gynecological cancers, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial assistance, child care, massage therapy, meal preparation and more. Pink & Teal Exercise Program: This exercise program is designed to help women regain flexibility, stamina and strength following breast or gynecological surgery and/or

cancer treatment. Clients meet with trained exercise physiologists for one-onone personal training sessions to address their specific physical goals and issues. Gift Of Health & Inspiration (GOHI): The Gift Of Health & Inspiration program includes a free tote bag, which is designed to be a supportive companion to the newly diagnosed cancer patient. The tote bag is filled with items to assist with your mind, body and soul. The items are nurturing, organic and holistic. They are given to patients at Good Samaritan and St. Catherine’s. Scholorship Programs: The BBCC offers scholarships to Babylon Township high school seniors who have had a parent or legal guardian with a personal breast and/ or gynecological cancer history. An essay must be submitted to be in the running for a scholarship! Vision Of Hope Garden (VOHG): There is a VOHG that this coalition started that is located on the southeast corner of Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst. Engraved bricks can be purchased in memory or in honor of someone who has battled breast or gynecological cancer and they will be installed in this garden. Bricks are available for engraving and installation at a cost of $50 each. Additionally, the BBCC is holding an Online Psychic Night! Join others for a gallery style reading as Georgia Rose channels messages from the other side! Nassau County Executive Laura Curran recently hosted the County’s annual Winter Clothing Distribution, which included a major donation by the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office of jackets seized during the course of a crackdown on illegal counterfeit activities. Hempstead Town Celebrates 72nd India Republic Day With a Ceremonial Flag Raising Over Town Hall Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and Town Clerk Kate Murray were joined by members of the Town Board and dignitaries from the Indian American Forum for a ceremonial hoisting of the National Flag of India to mark the 72nd India Republic Day. The small socially distanced ceremony held outside of Hempstead Town Hall was an important show of solidarity between the world’s most populous democracy as it observed its historical day of transition to a republic, and America’s largest township. “The Town of Hempstead is the proud home of a great number of IndianAmerican families who continue to add to the incredible diversity found in the economic, civic, and cultural life of America’s largest township,” said Supervisor Don Clavin. “Our community is better for their contributions, and I am glad to celebrate this important day with my Indian-American neighbors.” The histories of both the United States and the Republic of India have been interwoven through the decades since the original Republic Day whereupon the two nation’s emerged as intrinsic partners on the world stage. The deep ties produced through this transoceanic partnership

extend to the individual level as well, with the United States being home to a large and fast growing Indian-American community. While the COVID-19 pandemic has forced celebrants to reimagine traditional Republic Day festivities both in the Town of Hempstead and elsewhere, Supervisor Clavin and the Town Board felt it necessary to observe the holiday which honors the adoption of the Constitution of India on January 26, 1950 and the transition of the nation to a republic. “This is a great day around the world as communities celebrate India Republic Day and the historical significance of the holiday,” said Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby. “I am proud to celebrate this special day with neighbors from across the township as well wishers around the world recognize the adoption of the Constitution of India,” said Councilman Bruce Blakeman. “The adoption of the Constitution of India was an incredibly important moment in world history, which is why I am elated to join in the reimagined festivities taking place this year in honor of India Republic Day,” said Councilman Anthony D’Esposito.
