Long Island Teens Named Students Of The Quarter

Seventeen students from across Nassau County were named Students of the Quarter at Nassau BOCES GC Tech career and technical education (CTE) high school. These skilled CTE students were all honored for their grades, attendance, work ethic and preparedness. Bellmore-Merrick Students of the Quarter are: Ryan Duffey, who is studying Automotive Technology; Police Science student Nicholas Larsen; and Cassandra Niedfeld, who is studying to become

an Emergency Medical Technician. Bethpage Students of the Quarter are Cosmetology student Lily D’Avanzo, and Michael Menz, who is studying Automotive Technology. The East Meadow Student of the Quarter is Eric Mallilo, who is studying Automotive Technology. Luke Fischetti Recognized For Volunteerism

Grand Avenue Middle School eighth grader Luke Fischetti was honored by the Bellmore-Merrick Board of Education at their Jan. 12 meeting for his volunteerism during the Bellmore Lions Club Polar Express event held in early December. In partnership of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District and the Community Cupboard, the Lions Club Holiday

Polar Express hosted 575 children who received donated toys and other items. This annual free event is under direction and guidance of Lion Past District Governor, Nina Lanci, who has chaired the event for the past seven years. Fischetti used $200 of his own money to make baseball card gift packages to give out to deserving

children. “When Luke went to the baseball card store, the owner heard what he was doing and decided to match Luke’s contribution,” explained Lanci, who also serves as a member of the North Bellmore and Central High School District school boards. “Luke spent the entire day at the Polar Express event giving out his packages and helping the community.”

The Long Island Pet Expo Is Back!

The Long Island Pet Expo returns for the first time since the outbreak of COVID on March 5-6, 2022, with fur flying entertainment, dog sporting competitions and educational programs designed for the whole family. The event returns to the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena and features many special attractions, pet adoptions and outstanding shopping for pet lovers and their pets. “The Long Island area is passionate about animals and pets of all kinds,” said show co-producer Karen Garetano of Family Pet Shows, which runs seven similar events in the northeast. “We are excited to be back in the area after a long, unplanned break. The number of pet licenses

in the region has almost doubled since the start of COVID, and the interest in the event seems to have doubled too based on our phones and social media activity.” The 80+ special exhibits always feature some of the hottest new products coming out often before they hit the retail shelves. Dogs on leashes are always welcome, and several area rescue groups with adoptable pets will be on hand. Popular performers and presenters include Diana Frohman and her beautiful Dancing Dogs. Schutzhund Demonstration by Maximum K9 Service , the Dog Lovers Days Lure Course, Johnny Peers Muttville Mix, Doggie U K9 Academy Rainforest Reptiles, TICA

Championship Cat Shows and more. “We always have fun at these events, but we also are strong supporters of responsible pet ownership and humane values when it comes to all issues involving animals and pets,” said Garetano. “We partner with several community organizations, shelters, veterinarians and other animal lovers educate and inform when it comes to best practices for training, feeding and all aspects of pet care.” Community and rescue organizations participating in the show include Tylers Rescue, Chippy’s Angels to the Rescue, Haven Animal Foundation, Last Chance Animal Rescue, Pet Partners, LI Golden Retriever Rescue, and more The event is expected to draw over 10,000 attendees over the weekend. Admission is Adults $15, Kids 3-11 are $6, and those under three years old are always free. Saturday March 5th the hours are 10 am to 7 pm, and on Sunday, March 6th, from 10 am to 5pm. MEME TREND INSPIRES WANTAGH STUDENT RESEARCHER - Wantagh High School senior Jennifer Rosen had her 11th grade Advanced Placement Research paper on the “Karen” meme trend published online by the Journal of Student Research. Photo courtesy of the Wantagh School District Focusing specifically on incidents in which the person displayed racist behaviors, Jennifer did a two-part data collection and started with an analysis of 150 incidents. Narrowing it further down

to 56 incidents, she found out that in 27% resulted in career consequences and 27% had legal consequences. Social media, Jennifer noted, has essentially become another justice

system with widelycirculated videos leading to repercussions for people including being “canceled.” She explained how her research shows how someone’s digital footprint can impact his or her personal and professional life. It also demonstrates the damage that a third party can cause to someone else’s reputation. Jennifer said that while memes are often meant as an expression of humor and comedy, they are also a modern form of a communication. In AP Research, students are tasked with filling in knowledge gaps, and Jennifer said that this trend is something that hasn’t been looked at from an academic standpoint. “The research took a lot of time, but I found it very well worth it in the end,” she said. “It’s cool to be able to say that I am a published researcher and it shows the hard work that I put into my project.”

Jennifer took AP Research with teachers Heather Jones and Heather Naughton and said that it opened her eyes to how research is a great way to pursue knowledge in any area of interest, from humanities to the sciences. She also was mentored by two professors from Stony Brook University, who helped her navigate the process in getting her work published. In June, she will graduate from Wantagh High School with an AP Capstone diploma and plans to pursue a degree in business or data science in college. Not only does Jennifer dedicate much time to her academics, but she is also involved in numerous organizations including the Key Club, National Business Honor Society, National English Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society. Outside of school, she works parttime at a local real estate office.

Wantagh High School senior Jennifer Rosen admits her Advanced Placement Research paper on the “Karen” meme internet trend may be a little unconventional, but she found the topic fascinating. So did the Journal of Student Research, which published her work online in its high school edition. Jennifer took AP Research as a junior, the second course in the AP Capstone program. She noted that the coupled crises in 2020 of the COVID-19 pandemic and racial protest movements led to a surge of memes and videos posted on social media of outraged individuals. Intrigued by this new mainstream trend, Jennifer decided to make it the focus of her individual research project and explore the career and legal consequences faced by the “Karens” following the release of video content and subsequent memes.
