Deadline Soon The Long Island Horticultural Society’s (LIHS) scholarship application deadline is approaching. Each year, the LIHS offers scholarships to Long Island
college students enrolled full-time or part-time in a horticulture program. In 2017, the Society will offer two scholarships of $1,000 each. Students interested in applying for

SAFETY DIVISION AWARDS - On January 31st, an awards ceremony was held for members of the Nassau University Medical Center’s Public Safety Department who were recognized for their outstanding performance. Year of the Rooster In celebration of the Chinese New Year, Wisdom Lane Middle School family and consumer science students displayed their cooking skills with the preparation of a Chinese
meal. The students made egg rolls and a vegetable stir fry, under the direction of teacher Elaine Zeller. After the meal was prepared, the students sat down to a decorated
table to eat their meal with chopsticks. They also sampled traditional candies and fortune cookies, donated by parent Sally Hang.

that once the new millennium began, all relatable historical markers were left in the past, and with them some of the most vivid memories of days gone by. How innocent those days seem now, by comparison. Of course, the passing years have brought with them many wonderful innovations and improvements; but we seemed to manage just fine at the time, before it even occurred to our imaginations to dream such concepts. We may not have had cell phones back in school, but we knew how to make snow angels and snowmen, and we knew how to enjoy an unexpected day off much better than our adult selves seem to now. And with that, my shoveling – and my work – is done for the day. It’s on to baking chocolate chip cookies and sipping hot cocoa while catching up on some reading for me. Who says a little nostalgia isn’t good for the soul? Happy Winter to all.

Ah, snow days. Time was, they were a rare occasion to be looked forward to, an excuse to be carefree and cozy and free of all obligation. No more. Now, they are fraught with angst over the prospect of shoveling out, navigating the treacherous roadways and – somehow – making up for the time lost, whether at work, school or elsewhere. Oh, to be a child again… Speaking of the younger generation, as I was moving mound after mound of heavy, wet snow to the curbside in my apartment complex this past week, one of my neighbors remarked how “back in the day” it was common to see the local middle and high school boys clamoring to shovel out their neighbors’ driveways, usually for a quite reasonable sum. They made a few extra dollars, the elderly and infirmed were spared the agony of backbreaking labor, and all was well with the world.
“Nowadays,” he said, “you’ll be lucky to get them to look up from their phone for a minute.” Which brings me to my next point – when, exactly, did it become a requirement for every child from the age of four on up to have their own cell phone? I understand the practical purposes it serves in case of emergencies and all; but you can’t tell me that sending a child to school with a phone is not a distraction waiting to happen. Back in my day (all 17 years ago) we brought quarters for the pay phone. And, if by chance we were low on change, we asked to go to the Main Office, where they were more than happy to let us call home for a ride. My, how times have changed. It’s funny how we tend to lose the perspective of exactly how much time has elapsed between certain milestones in life. When someone says “ten years ago,” I immediately assume they’re referring to the 1990’s, when in fact that decade is now ancient history by comparison. It seems

Stories came to life on the faces of Lee Road School students in Levittown during a StoryFaces performance with storyteller and artist Christopher Agostino. The assembly was one of several activities during the school’s annual celebration of Person/People As Reading Partners in which students are encouraged to read each night.
“Stories are meant to be shared,” Agostino told the students. “Once you have heard them, their yours to share with others.” Select students were called to the front of the room, where Agostino painted their faces to illustrate traditional and folk tales including “The Legend of the Haunted Bridge,” “The Tiger that Went to the House of the
Sun,” and “The Lion and the Mouse.” During the performances, Agostino also encouraged the students to read and expressed how reading has developed his career as an artist. “Reading is an adventure that brings me to a whole other world,” he said.
Presentation Set The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, in conjunction with local school districts and organizations, will hosts Stephen L. Dewey, Ph.D. who will address the impact of abusive drugs on the human brain on February 16th. Dr. Dewey’s presentation, “The Effects of Drugs of Abuse on the Teen Brain,” will include illicit drugs, prescription drugs, marijuana, synthetic marijuana, energy drinks, caffeine, e-cigarettes and Flakka. Through the use
of actual PET images, he will also explain how alcohol and drug use affect the developing adolescent and adult brain. His format is nonjudgmental and is based on objective scientific data. This is schoolcommunity partnership that has support from the Bellmore-Merrick Community Coalition, Community Parent Center, Bellmore School District, North Bellmore School District, Merrick School District, North Merrick School District,

Honoring National Parks the parks including the Everglades, Zion, Grand Teton and Arches during their computer class with the assistance of technology teacher Taylor Stoessel. After compiling their information, the students spent an additional six weeks creating presentations using Microsoft Office Sway. The program allowed them to
present their final projects to their classmates with interactive videos and high-definition photos. The activity, which aligned with the fifthgraders’ social studies curriculum, taught them valuable skills in research and public speaking while providing an in-depth lesson in U.S. geography and history.

In the past 24 years, his players have also acquired 20 league championships, three Nassau County championships, two Long Island championships and one state championship. For five years, Costello coached the Long Island team during the now defunct New York State Empire Games. Costello noted that many of these top players continued their careers in the national
sector with the Mets, Blue Jays and Brewers. Costello noted that this award is recognition for all of the school’s coaches and players. “It is a reflection of our program and the tremendous hard workings of our students,” he said. “I have been so lucky to coach these kids.” When asked about his prescription for success, Costello said coaches should not micromanage the players. “You have to give the players the freedom to play and not over-coach,” he noted. “The kids will always rise to the occasion.”

Fifth-graders at Meadowbrook Elementary School in the East Meadow School District commemorated the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service by conducting research on the history of 25 U.S. parks. For six weeks, the classes of Valerie Kasper, Emily Caroddo and Kara Riley researched the locations, wildlife and history of
MacArthur High School varsity baseball coach Steve Costello has been named Region I Coach of the Year as well as New York State Coach of the Year by the National Federation of High School Coaches. The region includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. Costello has served as head varsity coach at MacArthur High School for 25 years. During Costello’s 30year coaching career in Levittown, his teams have garnered 468 wins and
Fifth-graders at Levy Lakeside School in the Merrick School District kicked off the new year on a healthy note by recently participating in a Be1st Fitness boot camp. Representatives from the Be1st Fitness training facility visited the school to teach students about the significance of exercise,
living a healthy lifestyle and maintaining good form through various exercise circuits. The boot camp consisted of body weight exercises such as push-ups, sit-ups and squats to zone in on core muscles. It also provided cardiovascular exercises such as burpees (squat thrusts) and jumping
jacks and addressed coordination with obstacle courses containing agility ladders and small hurdles. After completing the boot camp, the students divided into two teams to compete in an obstacle relay course that incorporated all of the exercises they had just learned.
Scholar Athletes The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that the Division Avenue High School varsity cheerleading and varsity girls volleyball teams were designated as New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete teams. To qualify, 75 percent of team members earned a 90 percent GPA or greater during the winter season. The district congratulates the student-athletes on this outstanding academic accomplishment.

Carnival Celebrates Reading As a culminating Pick a Reading Partner event, Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore hosted an old-fashioned carnival to celebrate a monthlong of additional reading. The students succeeded
in reading an extra 73,272 minutes, so Principal Patricia Castine and Assistant Principal Elise Cahill dressed as NASA astronauts to celebrate the event theme “STARS Stick Together and Read.” During the carnival, the
students played games including Krazy Cans, Big Mouth, Tick Tock Toe and more. Students received prizes to go along with the night’s theme and even took the time to take a picture with district mascot Stellar.
Generous Gift The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Community Cupboard received a generous gift during the board of education meeting on February 1st. Members of the Bellmore Lions and
Kiwanis clubs presented the cupboard with a $1,500 check. Housed at Brookside School’s administrative building, the cupboard is a fully-stocked food pantry for local needy families.
“This has been a beautiful experience that has brought this community together,” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mara Bollettieri, who helped spearhead the project.

The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that the Women’s Gridiron Foundation and the United States Women’s Football League have presented Salk Middle School seventh-grader Gia Stamatelo with the 2017 National Game Changer Award. The 5-foot-2 seventh-grade football team running back and line backer, who assisted in her team’s undefeated season, was nominated by the New York Sharks professional football team.
The award recognizes Gia for inspiring young girls to pursue their dreams with passion, self-respect and without fear. “It makes me feel great that people see me this way,” Gia said. “I feel women are as capable as a man to play football.” The honor roll student has been playing football since she was 5 years old as a member of the Red Devils and Levittown Pride teams. Gia plans on trying out for the eighth-grade middle school team next fall and

Raehse, who won her school’s bee by correctly spelling “pertinacity,” joined Keith Zazzi at the regional bee. Zazzi, a seventh-grader at Merrick Avenue, secured his spot by correctly spelling “prestidigitation” at his
school’s competition. The students first competed in their individual classroom spelling bees hosted by their teachers, and were then offered a spot to compete in their schoolwide spelling bee. The winner at Hofstra will attend the 92nd annual National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in May.
Gaining Insight culture, they learned that the Chinese have a picture language as well as a spoken language. As a culminating activity, the first-graders painted
symbols representing happiness, luck, peace, health and love on red construction paper and made Chinese lanterns.

The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a tax lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) and the property securing same. The Nassau County Treasurer reserves the right to intervene in any bankruptcy case/litigation where the property affected by the tax liens sold by the Treasurer is part of the bankruptcy estate. However,it is the sole responsibility of all tax lien purchasers to protect their legal interests in any bankruptcy case affecting their purchased tax lien, including but not limited to the filing of a proof of claim on their behalf, covering their investment in said tax lien. The Nassau County Treasurer and Nassau County and its agencies, assumes no responsibility for any legal representation of any tax lien purchaser in any legal proceeding including but not limited to a bankruptcy case where the purchased tax lien is at risk. Souper Bowl Scholars Third-graders at Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District proved to be fantastic football fans as they completed several assignments related to the Super Bowl on February 3rd. Kristi De Lace’s class celebrated the Falcons vs. Patriots face-off with projects, activities and treats. The students researched the history of the Super Bowl and its past winners, presented their facts through charts,
learned about biographies as they answered questions about Matt Ryan and Tom Brady, and predicted this year’s winner. They used multiplication to review Super Bowl squares and improved their geography and map skills as they located states that hosted previous Super Bowls. The day was not without its artistic element, which the third-graders embraced as they created persuasive posters designed to influence others’ decisions about which team to
root for. The front of the classroom was decorated with the creative posters, with equal representation of both the Patriots and Falcons. Overall, the Super Bowl learning experience involved reading, writing, technology, research and math. Thanks to parent volunteers, students enjoyed typical game-day snacks, football-themed lollipops and a field of cupcakes after completing their work.

entries with 803 students from around the world being named finalists. During the debates this summer, the finalist essays will be considered for additional top prizes and the will be presented to United Nations SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres.
As Bellmore students pass through Winthrop Avenue’s main hallway, they are encouraged to take the time to read one of the many hearts that hang from the school’s Random Acts of Kindness Tree. “The tree is a reminder to all of our students of

The Virtual Enterprise class at W.T. Clarke High School in the East Meadow School District demonstrated their business acumen and ingenuity when they competed in the Virtual Enterprise International Northeast Regional Trade Show at Farmingdale State College on January 13th. According to its website, VEI is a global business simulation that offers students a competitive edge through project-based, collaborative learning and the development of 21st-century skills in entrepreneurship, global business, problem-solving, communication, personal finance and technology. Consisting of 19 seniors, W.T. Clarke’s VE class mimics the operations of a real business, with departments including accounting, marketing, human resources and web design. The company is entirely student-run, with teacher Joseph Pavia acting as its consultant. In addition to managing its daily operations on
a multi-departmental level, the students also evaluate employee growth and receive a virtual salary that can be spent on products and services offered by other schools’ VE firms, both local and international. W.T. Clarke’s firm, Munchkings, sells snack mixes that are customized to target consumer groups’ tastes. The “Lazy Man Mix,” for example, is an assortment of potato chips, popcorn, chocolate candies and mini chocolate chip cookies and is geared toward the armchair athlete. The “Veggie Mix” is a blend for the more health-conscious consisting of veggie straws, veggie chips and pressurecooked potato chips. At the regional show, the Munchkings’ administrative team presented their 30-page business plan and a 15-minute PowerPoint presentation to a panel of judges. In addition, undercover judges walked the sales floor to analyze the businesses of more
than 900 students. They awarded the Munchkings first place for best sales pitch and second place for most enthusiastic firm, the latter bestowed upon those companies that exhibit the most passion, energy and perseverance. “This is not an ordinary class,” said Pavia. “My students always amaze me with their dedication, hard work and perseverance. I am very fortunate to teach this class and am beyond grateful for the incredible support I receive from my administrators.” The results have not calculated, but if the Munchkings advance, they will participate in VEI’s 2017 Youth Business Summit, a national-level competition that will be held in New York City from April 3rd-5th. This competition brings school firms from all over the U.S. and the world to trade live with each other. The East Meadow School District wishes the Munchkings much success as they continue in the competition.

St. Raphael CYO will host its 10th annual Winter Classic Boys Basketball Tournament for youth teams, 4-8 grade, from February 16th-26th at their parish gymnasium on 600 Newbridge Road in East Meadow. The tournament is one of the premier events on Long Island held in February at the culmination of the boys CYO campaign that has garnered rave reviews from coaches, parents and players in the Nassau and Suffolk County communities. on all participating teams receives a commemorative t-shirt from this year’s tournament. Raffle prizes, concessions and contests for kids attending the tournament are also a unique feature of the tournament for each and every game. For the youth basketball purist it is a well organized, fun-filled competitive tournament atmosphere you won’t want to miss. The gymnasium is also handicap accessible.
