In conjunction with Lee Road Elementary School’s Community Service Committee in the Levittown Public Schools, Lee Road musicians performed their winter concert for a cause on January 22nd. Student members of the Lee Road Community Service Committee and non-members, along with former Lee Road students
collected 190 food items during the evening to benefit the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Long Island Cares, Inc. With the help of Lee Road Community Service Committee advisers Julia Moore and Christina Wilkinson, parent member Jenny Thompson and parent volunteers, concert-goers were encouraged to donate
food items before taking their seats at the concert. The generous donations would help the orchestra, choruses and band to “turn their music into meals.” Chapin, a Grammywinning musician and humanitarian founded Long Island Cares, Inc. to help feed local families in need.

Gardiners Avenue Elementary School fifth-graders in Nicole Corron’s class recently learned about what it means to be mindful. The students engaged in a lesson about how to practice mindfulness and the benefits of mindful meditations. The class also discussed ways in which they were already applying focus and stress reduction techniques to activities such as martial arts, performing arts and athletics. After the discussion, the students participated in a writing activity in which each student described how he or she was feeling at that moment in time, as well as naming a “happy place,” or a place that when thought of brings happiness. Following the activity, students learned about yoga breathing exercises and a teacher-led “happy place” meditation. At

Thwarting a Dangerous Trend Nassau DA Singas and NCPD Commissioner Ryder are supporting legislators Arnold Drucker and Debra Mulé in their push to make “revenge porn” a crime in Nassau County. At a press conference that took place on Tuesday, January 29th, Nassau County’s top law enforcement officials explained why they support a proposal co-sponsored by Legislators Arnold W. Drucker (D - Plainview) and
Debra Mulé (D - Freeport) that would make “revenge porn” a crime in Nassau County. Following months of research and outreach to victim-advocate groups and law enforcement leaders, Legislators Drucker and Mulé co-filed the legislation on January 22nd that would make disseminating revenge porn an unclassified misdemeanor that is punishable by one year in jail and a $1,000
fine. The legislation will also empower victims to seek civil damages. A representative from The Safe Center Long Island was in attendance and read a victim impact statement to illustrate the need for immediate local action, and to give a voice to the emotional, physical and professional damage that can be caused by perpetrators of revenge porn.

Fluent in KidOYO Shore Road School sixth-grade students in the Bellmore School District are taking their programming skills to the next level by learning the popular coding program KidOYO. Under the direction of library media specialist Mary Willis, the students have been participating in drawing challenges by Hatch. The students first learned to code a picture
of a square and other basic geometric shapes, which taught sequential movement skills and code direction. As they progressed to the coding of a hexagon and octagon, the students learned looping, which is a repeated block that isolates commands to make a shape. More advanced skills include the ability of the students to clone a sprite, which is a two-dimensional
image independently manipulated within a larger image environment, such as leaves falling off of a tree. Ms. Willis said that though some of the students find coding challenging, the students are significantly advancing in their computer coding skills through this funfilled program.

“Helping Both Ends of The Leash” Paws of War is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military Veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each Veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love that only a companion animal can bring! Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters.
The lives of many American Heroes have been changed forever because of what this organization has done for them!

Therapy Dog Program - This is a volunteer based program in which certified Therapy Dogs are brought to visit individuals that would benefit from a dog, but unfortunately cannot have one at the time being. War Torn Pups Program - This program has brought back dogs from Afghanistan, Syria and Jordan that Service Members have found while out on tour. Community Education Program - This program allows Paws of War to work with members of their local community. Through this program, they are able to provide a direct connection between Veterans and the younger population. Vets to Vets Medical RV - This mobile RV provides certain medical services for service animals at no cost to Veterans!
Paws of War is growing and has been recognized by national leaders, national press and some of the larger sporting franchises have even partnered with them to sponsor a dog. The men and women that this organization provides services for have dedicated their lives to serving our great country, and Paws of War strives to help them in every way possible! PRAAT is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that was incorporated in 1993 as a community
service project of the Patchogue Rotary Club. Veterinarian Dr. David Roy Hensen founded this
organization with a belief in the therapeutic potential of dogs! PRAAT screens, trains and eval-
uates all dog-handler teams (the volunteer and their dog). Upon a successful completion of the
PRAAT dog-handler team training, teams become eligible to make visits at over 150 of their contracted and insured facilities across Long Island. PRAAT also runs a Doggie Reading Club. This
program is designed to encourage children to improve confidence with their reading skills, while

The Paws of War Service Dog Program relies heavily on the support of their community and volunteers. Through this program they are able to provide service dogs and their training to Veterans in need at no cost, truly providing them with a miracle! A service dog can help combat the daily symptoms of PTSD. They are trained to pick up stress signals and intervene with their owner to direct their focus back to a positive environment. They can also greatly increase the quality of life for someone suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury. Paws of War trains service dogs to combat the daily issues that someone suffering from TBI has. Each service dog given out is intensely trained before handed off to the Veteran.

PUBLIC NOTICE OF COUNTY TREASURER’S SALE OF TAX LIENS ON REAL ESTATE Notice is hereby given that I shall, commencing on February 19, 2019, sell at public on-line auction the tax liens on real estate herein-after described, unless the owner, mortgagee, occupant of or any other party-in- interest in such real estate shall pay to the County Treasurer by February 14, 2019 the total amount of such unpaid taxes or assessments with the interest, penalties and other expenses and charges, against the property. TERMS OF SALE Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldier’s and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased. The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. The rate of interest and penalty which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount from which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase be of no further effect. Time is of the essence in this sale. The class is a real work environment in which the students assume business responsibilities based on their backgrounds and interests and the classroom simulates the atmosphere of a company. As employees of a virtual business, students are held accountable for the
company’s performance. They conduct market research, develop a business plan, design an e-commerce website, pay wages and taxes, maintain 401(K) plans and draft an annual report. In addition, students have the opportunity to interact with 5,000 other VE firms
from school districts locally, nationally and internationally. The district congratulates the students on this outstanding accomplishment and much success in future competitions.

Simple Ways To Be Good To Yourself Years ago, I was roaming the aisles of Costco and picked up a book, titled, 101 Simple Ways to Be Good To Yourself by Donna Watson Ph.D. I’ve been re-reading it ever since. As we grow older and our responsibilities mount, we lose touch with our own needs. Children, spouses, jobs (second jobs), mortgages, car payments, friends in need…the list is endless. The weekdays bleed into each other in a frenetic blur, and on weekends we can barely catch up on sleep, catch our breath and take the kids to their weekend activities. Sometimes “adulting” can make you want to cry “Uncle.” Most likely, you’re running on fumes. If your battle cry of the moment is, “Stop the ride, I wanna get off!” a few small adjustments can recharge a burnt out battery. There are plenty of simple ways to be good to you, which will, in turn, help you be good to others. BREATHE. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, stop right there and breathe. Breathe out all of the air in your body through your mouth. Count to four and
then breathe in through your nose, filling up your abdomen (not your chest). Hold for four seconds. Then, slowly let the air leak out through your mouth as your belly deflates. Repeat. LAUGH. Make YouTube your friend. I personally love the television show, All In The Family. When I need a good laugh, I cue up a full episode on YouTube and laugh myself silly. Laughing is good for the soul. LISTEN. Nothing soothes me like Jazz music. Did you know that brain surgeons play their favorite music in the operating room to take the pressure off? Sometimes, in order to do your best, you have to actually place your attention elsewhere to remain centered and focused. WALK. Take a walk in nature. Walk briskly, look at the grass, the trees and the sky. Breathe in the crisp air, feel your body move and your heart rate slightly increase. Feel your muscles working to move your body. ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss—is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Building a Virtual Enterprise Wantagh High School’s college-level Virtual Enterprises International firm, Coffee Cubed, won silver medals in the company branding, employee handbook, e-commerce website, impact marketing and video commercial categories during the Long Island VE Trade Show, held at LIU Post on January 9th. Coffee Cubed provides a rechargeable custom thermos that heats content to any temperature in two minutes or less. Coffee cubes are placed in the thermos tray and dissolve into the water, making a perfect cup of coffee. The cubes are perishable and do not cause pollution like k-cups. The Wantagh School District implemented the VEI program during the 2016-2017 school year, which allows students to develop a virtual business from concept to implementation.
Moving Forward According to the dictionary, a Puff Adder derives its name from the snake’s habit of inflating itself and hissing when it feels threatened. It is considered of one the most poisonous snakes in the world and is found in several countries around the globe. If you think about it, not only is this the habit of this reptile but it also applies to bullies who have the same reaction once they feel threatened by an outside force. Bullies are present around the world and while they don’t make a hissing sound when angry, it’s easy to notice how their facial expression turns into a grimace. They exhibit a negative body posture with arms folded tightly around their chest (to psychologically protect them from the perceived negative force facing them).
The class is a real work environment in which the students assume business responsibilities based on their backgrounds and interests and the classroom simulates the atmosphere of a company. As employees of a virtual business, students are held accountable for the
company’s performance. They conduct market research, develop a business plan, design an e-commerce website, pay wages and taxes, maintain 401(K) plans and draft an annual report. In addition, students have the opportunity to interact with 5,000 other
VE firms from school districts locally, nationally and internationally. The district congratulates the students on this outstanding accomplishment and much success in future competitions.

Calhoun Class Takes to the Streets On January 15th, Brian Joyce’s leadership class at Sanford H. Calhoun High School was spotted cleaning trash near Dunkin Donuts on Webster Street. A community member shared her appreciation with Principal Nicole Hollings. “The amount of enthusiasm displayed by these young adults was inspirational and much appreciated by the
residents,” the note read. “It’s wonderful to realize that there are responsible and caring students.” The students were surprised that the simple act of picking up trash could have such an effect on people. “People came out to thank us for what we were doing,” sophomore Maura Walters said. “It is amazing how something so simple can make such
a difference for people and the community.” In her weekly email sent on Jan. 18, Principal Hollings shared with parents her pride for the students who choose to do good and kind things for others. “In the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr., let us all look for ways to do good, be kind, shed light on injustice and be better people,” she said.

A Teddy Towards Kindness Approximately 40 Jonas E. Salk Middle School students from Michele Witte’s seventhand eighth-grade classes recently participated in the Tyler’s Teddies movement, raising approximately $300 for Kids In Danger, a nonprofit organization dedicated to child consumer safety products. The fundraiser, which was inspired by a little boy
named Tyler who died as a result of an unsafe child product, allows students to “pay it forward” during the holiday season. The students prepared hundreds of little teddy bears with a tag that read: “You received a Tyler’s Teddy and now you get to pay it forward! Do something nice or be someone kind; this little bear is sure to remind!”
The bears were sold for $3 each during students’ lunch periods. Many students purchased teddies and gave them to unsuspecting friends and family members who in turn were asked to “pay it forward” by doing a good deed during the holiday season. At the end of the fundraiser, the school hosted a pajama day as a celebration of kindness.
Brain Power on Display Students at the East Meadow School District’s Bowling Green Elementary School demonstrated their wide range of knowledge by participating in “The Brain Show” on January 23rd. “The Brain Show,” according to its website, is an educational trivia contest with the authentic look and feel of a live television game show
equipped with music, lockout buzzer systems, chase lighting and LED scoring systems. The show was broken into three sessions as second- through fifthgrade students answered age-appropriate questions while also encouraging audience participation. Questions covered topics related to math, biology,
geography and more. Following each session, teachers went on stage to answer general knowledge questions chosen by the host, Glen. Bowling Green extends a special thank you to the PTA for organizing this fun and interactive program.

Electricity and magnetism were the subject of a dynamic lesson with science consultant Brian Wallrapp. Winthrop Avenue School fourthgraders in the Bellmore School District learned that when electricity and magnets connect, the result is a powerful effect. “In terms of static
electricity,” Mr. Wallrapp said, “a dangerous level of unbalanced electrons causes lightening in the atmosphere. And the effect can be very dynamic.” The students learned that electricity and magnetism are made up of atoms and that one gram of salt possesses three quintillion atoms. In
addition, they performed several experiments with balloons, a plasma ball, a globe and paperclips that demonstrated how electromagnetism worked. The students most enjoyed learning how humans can conduct electricity by forming a human circuit.
Kindness is the Goal In addition to the Bellmore School District’s monthly focus on specific leadership principles and core values, each building also works toward a schoolwide Starboard goal. Winthrop Avenue School’s Winning Star students are currently tracking acts of kindness throughout the school day. This wildly important
goal is highlighted on a prominent bulletin board in the school’s main lobby and is a unifying goal to focus on through February 8th. Students who perform or witness acts of kindness can submit a form to the main office. The students are interviewed by faculty and a confirmed act of kindness is recorded.

After 20 acts of kindness are tallied, a puzzle piece is removed from the star shape on the bulletin board with the goal of collecting enough acts of kindness to reveal the star’s leadership principles and core values. “The overall purpose of this goal is for each act of kindness to inspire another,” said Principal Sally Curto.

Not only does recycling prevent items from ending up in landfills, it reduces the amount of raw materials used to make new products. Here are some myths and facts about recycling commonly used food and beverage cartons: Myth: Cartons can’t be recycled. Fact: Cartons are certainly recyclable. They can be turned into new products, such as
paper towels, tissues and writing paper. They can also be turned into environmentally friendly building materials, in a process that uses no water or chemicals. Myth: If a package doesn’t have a recycling logo on it, it’s not recyclable. Fact: What can and can’t be recycled varies by community and is primarily dependent on the recycling facility. Cartons can carry the standard “Please Recycle” logo under the Federal Trade Commission’s
green guidelines. It’s best to contact your community or check its website to find out what can and can’t be recycled. Myth: You have to put your recyclables in a plastic bag and then in your recycling bin. Fact: Plastic bags can jam up equipment at recycling centers, slowing everything down and potentially preventing recyclables from getting recycled. Instead, place materials loosely in recycling bins or carts.
Myth: You have to crush cartons and remove the caps and straws before recycling them. Fact: Just empty any remaining product. No crushing is required, and the caps can be left on. You may want to stuff the straws back into the carton to make sure they don’t become litter. Myth: Cartons have a waxy coating and therefore can’t be recycled. Fact: Food and beverage cartons don’t contain any wax. Cartons are made
