Smith Haven Mall And Roosevelt Field To Host ‘ZOMBIES 2’ Events Smith Haven Mall and Roosevelt Field invite the community to “ZOMBIES 2” events, aimed at entertaining and delighting children of all ages. The events will take place at Smith Haven Mall on Saturday, February 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. and Roosevelt Field on Saturday, February 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. For added fun, shoppers can spin the Prize Wheel at Smith Haven Mall’s Guest Services for a chance to win special prizes during the event and enjoy music and additional activities at Roosevelt Field. During the events, families will be able to participate in a variety of activities including;
a craft project to create their own “ZOMBIES 2” sling bag, an exclusive photo opportunity and various giveaways. The fun starts near Center Court at Smith Haven Mall and North Court at Roosevelt Field. These events do not include live character appearances. Disney’s “ZOMBIES 2,” the highly anticipated sequel to the Disney Channel Original Movie “ZOMBIES,” is a music and dance-filled story that picks up as cheerleader Addison and zombie football player Zed are readying for Seabrook High’s Prawn, the school’s super-sized prom. However, the arrival of a new group of outsiders – mysterious
werewolves – threatens to shake up Seabrook’s newfound peace and causes a rift in Zed and Addison’s budding romance. “ZOMBIES 2” premieres Friday, February 14 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Channel. Simon® has collaborated with Disney Channel and Disney Junior to host special events and Disney Junior Play Dates in approximately 100 Simon Malls®, Mills®, and Premium Outlets® across the country. These unique events take place throughout the year and feature rotating activities themed to some of Disney Channel and Disney Junior’s most popular television shows and movies.

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate!

YES Community Counseling Center is pleased to announce it has received a $9000 Community Partner grant from United Way of Long Island. The funding will support the expansion of delivery services to residents of southeastern and central Nassau County. Jaclyn Dobbs, a student at Grand Avenue Middle School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District, named the school’s National Geographic GeoBee champion on Jan. 10. Alexandria Rabasco was
named a finalist. Dobbs will now have the opportunity to represent Grand Avenue at the state level. The GeoBee is an annual competition designed to inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world. Questions
cover geography, ancient and world civilizations, and cultures. More than 120 million students have learned about the world through participation in the GeoBee since its inception in 1989.
Stocking The Community Cupboard Shelves As part of a yearlong initiative to connect the curriculum to the community, the Merrick Avenue Middle School world languages department organized its second drive for the district’s food pantry, the Community Cupboard. “During the unit
on health and wellness, students collected personal hygiene items ranging from tissues to shampoo,” explained Chairperson Rosa Kaplan of the world languages department. “Hundreds of items were donated by both seventh and eighth grade students.”

Pet Safety Tips For The Winter Season

The temperatures are dropping by the day and with that comes snow, ice and other cold weather conditions. While you and your family are most likely prepared for the winter with warm clothing and shovels, what about your pets? Here’s how you can help your furry family members brave the cold and be safe all winter. Keep your pet warm. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, pets with thick or long hair tend to be more tolerant towards cold weather. If you bring your long-haired pup to the groomer during the winter, consider a simple trim rather than shaving their hair. Short-haired dogs on the other hand get cold fast due to their lack of fur to
insulate their body. Head out to your local pet store to buy a sweater or coat to help them stay warm. Protect their paws from de-icing chemicals. Salt and other de-icing chemicals can be harmful to your pet. Prior letting your dog or cat outside consider massaging petroleum jelly or pawprotectant on their paw pads to help prevent any redness and irritation, as recommended by the ASPCA. Winter boots made for pets are also a great alternative. Limit their time outdoors. The American Kennel Club says that like humans, both dogs and cats are susceptible to frostbite, especially on their earflaps and tails. Limit their play time outside during cold
weather spurts. Emergency preparedness for your pets. Power outages are common during winter-related disasters and can be a threat to you and your pet if the weather becomes severe, says AVMA. Create an emergency kit for your pet in the event of a winter storm or disaster that can lead to a power outage. The emergency kit should include seven days’ worth of water and food per pet, paper towels, waste baggies, blankets, toys and a flashlight with extra batteries. Cold temperatures can impose health risks to your furry friends but taking some precautions can help make winter more enjoyable for you and your pet!

Team A placed fourth out of 23 competing teams from across Long Island and earned a spot at the state competition to be held on March 1314. In addition, Team B members Anjelica Meagher and Amanda Ciarmella won a first-place medal in the Write It/Do It category. The annual Science Olympiad Competition includes more than 20 various science events
that challenge students to utilize their science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics skills to earn event medals while working with a partner. Wantagh’s Creative Minds Study Wind Energy Adrienne Downy, principal engineer for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, and Janna Herndon, NYSERDA project manager, visited Wantagh Middle School students enrolled in the Creative Minds course, to talk about the benefits of renewable energy and, in particular, two wind turbine projects approved by the state. The sixth grade Creative Minds course is taught by teachers Penni Miller, Nancy O’Connor and David Sposito and is one of various technology courses taught at Wantagh
Middle School. In line with technology courses, the Creative Minds course emphasizes development of mental process skills, such as creative thinking, decision-making, critical thinking and problemsolving. During the fall, Creative Minds students studied wind energy and created wind turbines. In addition to speaking about renewable energy, Ms. Downey explained the future of wind turbines to power homes and business throughout the metropolitan New York area and plans to “decarbonize” the power grid. She said that New York
State’s goal includes 70% of electricity coming from renewable energy. She also described two Long Island offshore wind projects, the Empire Wind and Sunrise Wind projects to be placed off of Jones Beach and Montauk, respectively. The turbine projects, Downey explained, will be places between 14 and 30 miles offshore and the turbines will stand as tall as the Statue of Liberty. “This will be happening in your lifetime,” Ms. Downey said. “There will be a lot of career opportunities to explore, so you should ask if this is a career for me.”
