he 2014 winter sports season has been a successful one for the Levittown School District’s Boys’ Bowling team. On January 23rd, the team defeated the Wantagh Warriors with a score of 2,680 to 1,983, gaining all 11 points in the match and clinching the Conference 7 championship. As the Levittown team wraps up their season with one position round left, the team is currently ranked fourth in Nassau County with a team average of 818.7.

Pre-K Registration Parents with a child/ children who will be 4 years old on or before December 1st, 2014 in the Levittown School District are invited to apply for admission to the Universal Prekindergarten Program during the 2014-2015 school year. The half-day program will be housed at one of our UPK providers beginning in September 2014 for 180 days through June 2015, roughly coinciding with the Levittown School District calendar. Craving Community Involvement
The first half of my school year has ended, and I have realized that I have started to crave more community involvement. To satisfy this urge to take part in more activities, I have begun to revive the South Shore Hookers Rugby Club. Essentially, for the past few seasons, this club has been defunct. Now, with the assistance of my brother and friends, I am striving to bring back a team that was once a staple of Suffolk County’s Rugby scene. Since I was a toddler, my father has taught me the basics of the sport, and I have taught my
friends. Playing on the field, I have developed a keen sense of peripheral vision. I have to be keenly aware of not only what’s in front of me, but also where my teammates are, and what everyone is doing on the field. I follow the same perspective in my academic studies. This helps me understand context, and has helped me solve challenging problems by looking beyond the obvious. The only setback that I have come across so far, is that we are lacking size. We have around fifteen or twenty guys, but we need twenty five to make a competitive
team. Essentially, I am reaching out to other members of the community to play on our team. As it is a U18 league, all players have to be under eighteen years of age. If you want to play on the South Shore Hookers, you must also live within driving distance of East Islip, as we practice at Hecksher Park. What Dreams May Come By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Do you dream? Better yet, do you remember these abstract visions once you awaken? Do they make any sense, or are they simply random collections of people in mystery places, moving wordlessly through your subconscious with no clear direction or purpose? I once took a class on the Philosophy of Dreams in college, where the sole objective was to keep a dream book and analyze its contents week-to-week, drawing conclusions from whatever images may have manifest themselves overnight.
To say there were many interesting – disturbing, even – discussions would be an understatement. And those were just the dreams my fellow students recalled! A dream is a wish your heart makes, or so the saying goes – but what of nightmares and other less desirable visions? What do they mean? Should any conclusions be drawn, or are they simply beyond the scope of human comprehension? And what of the dreams that fall into oblivion, never to be revisited again? I often find myself falling into and out of various
states of sleep, tossing and turning from one bizarre dream to the next, vaguely aware of the people and places surrounding me, but rarely discerning any viable plot from the whole scenario. The thing is, I rarely recall these visions by the time the new day dawns. There and gone, perhaps to be revisited at a later date. Or not. It’s a fairly exciting concept, when you stop and think of the mysterious majesty of it all – the subconscious, delving into the unconscious, and back again. Too deep? Brain on overload? Maybe it’s time for a little nap!

Bennett Pavilion at Town Hall in Hempstead. The theme of the 2014 celebration was Changing The World Through Education – Nelson Mandela. Braille Challenge
On February 1st, 25 students from across the region gathered at W.T. Clarke High School in the East Meadow School District for the seventh
annual Braille Challenge. The Braille Challenge, a program developed by the Braille Institute of America, was designed to motivate school-aged
visually impaired or blind children to continue their study of Braille. Contestants completed a number of grade-level exercises to demonstrate
their proficiency in Braille reading, writing, reading speed and comprehension, spelling, proofreading and use of tactile graphics. This year, students had the opportunity to meet members of the Long Island Bombers Beep Baseball team, a group which demonstrated their version of baseball using a ball and bases which beep. Third Eye Insight, an organization that offers martial arts, meditation and yoga classes for the visually impaired and blind community, was also on hand and introduced students to martial arts. Of the regional participants in the Braille Challenge, Michael Taylor, a W.T. Clarke High School student, participated in the competition.

The regional event is the first step on the road to the national competition, which will be held in June at the Braille Institute’s headquarters in Los Angeles. Students from across the nation are in the process of completing preliminary testing in the hopes of qualifying for the 60 spots available in the national competition. The top scorers in the preliminary round will advance to the nationals to represent their state as they compete against the top blind students from across the U.S. and Canada. Dr. Donald Sturz, director of special education and pupil personnel services for the East Meadow School District, said the Braille Challenge is a paramount
event for the district, and one it hosts with great pride each year. “It highlights students’ talents and capabilities,” he said. “When you see what they’re capable of, you can’t help but be inspired by them. They’re so engaged and so diligent. It’s an amazing day.” The district thanks Petra Tarrant, teacher of students who are blind or visually impaired, for coordinating the annual event. In addition, the district extends its appreciation to the Special Education Institute of New York, Pizza Supreme and East Meadow’s Special Education PTA for their donations and all the event volunteers for making the day possible.

The Town of Hempstead African-American History Month Planning Committee paid tribute to Doris Brown of Roosevelt for community service, and twenty-four Town of Hempstead employees for their twenty-five years ofservice to residents of America’s largest township. Barbara Jones, the first African American woman to be elected to
the CSEA Region One of Long Island, was honored with the Rosa Parks Award. “I am proud that we were able to present Barbara Jones with the Rosa Parks Award,” said Goosby. “Ms. Jones embodies the legacy left to us by the great civil rights champion, Rosa Parks.” “I am delighted that many residents of the Town of Hempstead joined together to reflect
upon and appreciate all of the contributions that African-Americans have made to this country,” said Supervisor Kate Murray. “AfricanAmericans have left an indelible and profoundly positive imprint on all facets of our community and nation, from spiritual enrichment, the sciences and culture to education and politics,” concluded Councilwoman Goosby.
Soup-er Food Drive A Success W.T. Clarke Middle School in the East Meadow School District recently hosted its third annual “Soup-er” Bowl food drive. The schoolwide initiative, held the week leading up to the Super Bowl, was organized by the school’s guidance department
in conjunction with the Builders Club. Throughout the week, students donated a variety of nonperishable items for the cause, including pasta, canned soups and vegetables and even personal care items. On January 31st, students
wore their favorite professional team’s jersey in anticipation of the upcoming Super Bowl and as a way of showing their support for their food drive initiative. All collected items were donated to the Island Harvest food bank on Long Island.

After the loss of someone very close, those around us are caring and concerned, making every effort to shield us from the hurt, and try to lessen our heartbreak. But at times, it just takes a quiet moment with a special someone or discovering something, anything, offering comfort or some relief from the grief, loneliness and unbearable ache. The “something” could be as simple as the warmth of an old, somewhat worn and familiar cup filled with hot and inviting morning coffee.

It appears as though each sip relieves some of the pain, even sharing the anguish while stirring emotions which, not surprisingly, leave you feeling a little drained and empty. It is not unusual to hold on and not let go just yet; it is okay to cradle the cup to your heart, cherishing your time together, and embracing some touching personal moments.

Adding a bit of sugar is a little reminder to reflect on those sweet times you shared in your life together, understanding that right now nothing seems quite right, nor appears to make any sense. As you stir your coffee, inhale the aroma and savor your memories, knowing the cup will soon be empty; and although there will always be an empty place in your heart, the images of the life you shared will gradually replace the sorrow. Listen to a sort of musical reminder as the spoon circles and brushes against the sides of the cup, and you will never forget that you will always cherish and embrace your old memories, while knowing the cup may empty today, but will fill with new memories each tomorrow. For now, just wake each morning with the thought “good morning sweetheart….let’s have a nice cup of coffee.” It’s OK! On February 11th, Circle of Hope is set begin its monthly “Cooking for Hope” series of classes where teens will learn to cook various Jewish foods, and then bring their creations to people in need. The new program is being launched in conjunction with CTeen. “Cooking for Hope is an amazing opportunity for our community’s teens to come together for an incredible cause,” said Michele Krebs Moscovitz, Circle of Hope coordinator. “We hope that the program will enable us to continue our muchneeded support for people in our community who are suffering from illnesses.” During each session, teens will have the opportunity to learn to cook a variety of Kosher dishes, from soups to kugels to rugelach, all the while bringing hope and happiness to those coping with illness. Circle of Hope, a project of the Chabad Center for Jewish Life, is a non-profit organization that provides awareness , emotional support and hands-on help to individuals and their families coping with breast

Many of these programs have dual credit agreements with Farmingdale State College as well as articulations with other colleges. “Nassau BOCES is extremely proud to help offer this opportunity to school districts as part of the Perkins Grant Consortium,” said Ms. Gene Silverman, executive director, Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs and facilitator of the consortium. “This is one of the many ways the program enriches the lives of students throughout Nassau County by giving them real world work place and 21st Century skills while still in high school.”
The Wantagh School District will hold the first of four public 20142015 budget workshops on Thursday, February 13th at 7 p.m., an hour prior to the Board of Education’s business meeting at the high school. Additional budget workshops are scheduled for Monday, March 10th; Thursday, March 27th; and Wednesday, April 2nd.
The February 13th budget workshop will be held in a roundtable format, and the community will be encouraged to share its beliefs on what should possibly be preserved or added to the budget or should be focused upon should reductions be needed. Issues and policies concerning class size, athletics, clubs,
transportation, staffing and the 2014-2015 budget planning process may be discussed during the roundtable discussions. At the conclusion of these discussions there will be a recap presented by a representative from each table. The questions posed will then be investigated by district administration and answered during the following workshop.

Seven teams of budding business leaders took top honors at the fourth annual Long Island Virtual Enterprises Business Plan Competition. It is sponsored by the Nassau BOCES Perkins Consortium in partnership with Eastern and Western Suffolk BOCES Perkins Consortiums, Virtual Enterprises, International and the CTE Technical Assistance Center of New York. Among those advancing to the finals are two teams of entrepreneurs from Bellmore’s John F. Kennedy High School, Baja Backyard Accessories and Cupcake Break, have advanced to the finals and will compete in the final round of competition on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at American Portfolio Financial Services Inc. in Holbrook. The competition

The orchestra, directed by Mindy Lamonica and accompanied by concertmaster Jolie Rebelo, performed several tunes, including Ukrainian Bell Carol by James Ployhar and Overture to die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss. Directed by Jonathan Ross and Rachel Fogel, the chorus performed an impressive set of songs, including Magic To Do by Stephen Schwartz and Gone Gone Gone by Todd Clark, Derek Fuhrmann and Gregg Wattenberg. TERMS OF SALE Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased.

The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a tax lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) and the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act(FIRREA),12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et.seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation(FDIC) receivership. The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The Nassau County Treasurer reserves the right to intervene in any bankruptcy case/litigation where the property affected by the tax liens sold by the Treasurer is part of the bankruptcy estate. However,it is the sole responsibility of all tax lien purchasers to protect their legal interests in any bankruptcy case affecting their purchased tax lien, including but not limited to the filing of a proof of claim on their behalf, covering their investment in said tax lien. The Nassau County Treasurer and Nassau County and its agencies, assumes no responsibility for any legal representation of any tax lien purchaser in any legal proceeding including but not limited to a bankruptcy case where the purchased tax lien is at risk. The rate of interest and penalty at which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount for which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all amounts deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase shall be of no further effect. Time is of the essence in this sale. This sale is held pursuant to the Nassau County Administrative Code and interested parties are referred to such Code for additional information as to terms of the sale, rights of purchasers, maximum rates of interest and other legal incidents of the sale. Hoops For Heart W.T. Clarke Middle School in the East Meadow School District hosted its Hoops for Heart program from January 24th-31st. During physical education classes, students learned about heart disease and the dangers of
smoking, proper nutrition and the cardiovascular system. Students participated in a variety of basketball exercises in the gymnasium, including dribbling, passing and lay-ups, which promoted the importance of being
physically healthy and remaining active. The program also raised money to support research for heart disease. All proceeds raised by the school will benefit the American Heart Association.

Celebrating A Life
Spreading Warmth In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s teachings, first-grade students in Christopher Merz’s class and second-graders in Eloise Eisenhardt’s class at Bellmore’s Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center collaborated to
create a mural. With the assistance of art teacher Karolyn Hertzberg, the classes to created the mural depicting ideas learned about Dr. King and his life through Bryan Collier’s book, “Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr.” The final product was presented to Principal Patricia Castine, where the students shared the significance of the various colors and words included on the mural.

Levittown’s Division Avenue High School’s science research and technology students placed third at the Invitational Science Olympiad Competition at Islip High School in December. This competition challenged participants to compete as a team during 25 individual science events. Under the direction of technology teacher Robert
Flauto, the students earned first place in six of seven building events. Science teachers Sarah LaBonte and Gerard Marzigliano also guided the students to wins in six academic lab events. The Science Olympiad team then traveled to Yale University in January to compete in the Science Olympiad Invitational Competition. Teams from

Olympiad Achievers New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Georgia competed against the Levittown students in 21 science categories. Division Avenue High School Class of 2011 valedictorian Karolina Ksiazek helped to organize the science events and gave the students a personal tour of the campus.
