ourth-graders at Norman J. Levy Lakeside Elementary School in the Merrick School District continued their Robotics Cycle this week, experimenting with new action and sense Cubelets. In groups, students assembled a variety of robots using Cubelets, which are magnetic blocks equipped with lights, wheels and sensors. Cubelets sense, think and act like a robot when snapped together. Students were challenged to identify the function of a new Cubelet.

As a culminating Pick a Reading Partner (PARP) event, Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore hosted an old fashioned carnival on January 28th to celebrate a month-long of additional reading. The students succeeded in reading an extra 50,000 minutes, so Principal
Patricia Castine and Assistant Principal Elise Cahill dressed as Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, respectively, to celebrate event theme “Rocking Out to Reading.” PTA members and Entertainment Plus More owners Chris and Leslie Cerverizzo donated the carnival games including
Krazy Cans, Big Mouth, Tick-Tac-Toe and more. Each student received a blow-up microphone to go along with the evening’s theme and prizes at each of the booths. Students even read an additional 15 minutes as Ms. Castine read Carolyn Crimi’s “Rock ‘N’ Roll Mole” in the school auditorium.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino has announced the town’s 2016 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program schedule. Trained VITA volunteers can provide seniors and residents with limited income with free assistance to prepare their federal and state income tax returns. The VITA program is sponsored by the Town of Hempstead’s Department of Senior Enrichment under the auspices of the Internal Revenue Service. “Assigned to town senior centers and local libraries, VITA volunteers trained by the town have provided invaluable aid to residents for over 40 years,” said Santino. “Our competent VITA volunteers stand READING CARNIVAL - Charles A. An Ode to Driving on LI By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.
Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow fly off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to
refrain from slamming on them for no good reason. Simply letting up on the gas pedal and, oh yes, steering can work wonders. These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. Stay tuned next week as Buddy the Betta celebrates his much-anticipated 1st Birthday in the bowl and offers his take on this thing called “Valentine’s” Day.

TERMS OF SALE Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased. The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a tax lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) and the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act(FIRREA),12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et.seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation(FDIC) receivership. The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The Nassau County Treasurer reserves the right to intervene in any bankruptcy case/litigation where the property affected by the tax liens sold by the Treasurer is part of the bankruptcy estate. However,it is the sole responsibility of all tax lien purchasers to protect their legal interests in any bankruptcy case affecting their purchased tax lien, including but not limited to the filing of a proof of claim on their behalf, covering their investment in said tax lien. The Nassau County Treasurer and Nassau County and its agencies, assumes no responsibility for any legal representation of any tax lien purchaser in any legal proceeding including but not limited to a bankruptcy case where the purchased tax lien is at risk. The rate of interest and penalty at which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount for which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all amounts deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase shall be of no further effect. Time is of the essence in this sale. The collective music of more than 100 instruments reverberated through the halls of Wantagh High School as studentmusicians in grades 5-12 performed during the district’s 10th annual Band Day Festival Concert on January 31st titled “At the Movies.” Under the direction of conductors Mindy Dragovich and Dan Aviles, students performed Jim Henson and Sam Pottle’s “The Muppet Show Theme,” Johnnie Vinson’s arrangement of “When I’m Gone,” Mike Story’s arrangement of the “Star Wars” main theme, Sean

younger students also became more familiar with the upperclassmen through a variety of games. Ms. Dragovich told the parents and staff that she could not be prouder of the students’ performance, as well as the middle and high school instructors’ and Band Council’s assistance and efforts during Band Day. “The older students acted like friends, mentors, and brothers and sisters, making the event so successful,” she said. To the younger students, she added, “You are now part of the (band) family.”

Clarke Middle School seventh-grader Nick Spano were crowned the schools’ National Geographic Bee champions. The 28th annual National Geographic Bee consists of fourth- through eighth-grade students testing their knowledge
of geography. In order for Michael and Nick to advance in the competition, they must complete the online qualifying test and score among the top 100 participants. If they qualify, Michael and Nick will be eligible to compete in the New York State Bee on April 1st. State winners then compete in the National Championship from May 22nd-25th.

In recognition of National Children’s Dental Health Month, kindergarten students at East Broadway Elementary School in Levittown learned how to properly maintain their healthy smiles. Dental hygienists Corina Conti and Alyssa Siegler from Adelberg Montalvan

Pediatric Dental, P.C. brought along their friendly dinosaur Dudley to demonstrate how to brush their teeth and floss correctly. “Taking care of your teeth is as important as taking care of other parts of the body,” Ms. Siegler told the students. The students watched a
video called “Dudley Visits the Dentist,” learned to brush their teeth for two minutes before school and bedtime and discovered how to eat correctly to prevent the accumulation of “sugar bugs.” The students then tried their hand at proper brushing and flossing on Dudley’s teeth.

Fourth-graders at Norman J. Levy Lakeside Elementary School in the Merrick School District continued their Robotics Cycle this week experimenting with new action and sense Cubelets. In groups, students assembled a variety of
robots using Cubelets, which are magnetic blocks equipped with lights, wheels and sensors. Cubelets sense, think and act like a robot when snapped together. Utilizing their critical thinking skills, knowledge of robotics, and each other,
students were challenged to identify the function of a new Cubelet, and to make predictions about what each would do. The Cubelets are quite unique, with some having sensitivity to light and temperature, while others can beep and spin.

Basketball Awarded Each month they select a winner from the community service stories shared and for January they recognized the Sanford H. Calhoun High School girls’ varsity basketball team, along with Coaches Peter Magnuson and Matt Fuentes, for their community service
work in hosting a clinic for younger children during the December break. The prize was a gift card to Frank’s Steaks in Jericho. In addition, the team just clinched their first playoff berth since the 2009-2010 season.
After competing locally and regionally in several competitions, the Wellington C. Mepham High School’s Varsity Cheerleading team earned a spot at nationals.
“With hard work and determination, these wonderful ladies succeeded their goal and achieved that bid to nationals and a second place trophy,” said coach Eliza Dall.
They will compete against the best in the nation from February 6th7th, at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Sharing Love In the East Meadow School District, Meadowbrook Elementary School partnered with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Student Series to help patients and families fight these medical issues through their “Pennies for
Patients” fundraiser. Students collected money and donated their loose change to help children battling childhood cancers. To promote the fundraiser, Meadowbrook held two spirit days, “Team Up Against Leukemia” and
“Spread Love for a Cure.” On these days, students, faculty and administration wore their favorite team jerseys and the colors red or pink. Over the three-week fundraiser, Meadowbrook collected more than $1,500 in donations.

PRESIDENTIAL AWARD - Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino and members of the Town Board presented a Citation to Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby to congratulate her for receiving the prestigious “Presidential Award” from the National Coalition of 100 Black Women’s Long Island Chapter. Goosby accepted the award at the chapter’s Black and White Candlelight Ball held at Jericho Terrace in Mineola on January 9th.

The students first measured sugar, vanilla and half-and-half into a Ziploc bag and ice cubes in another. In a number of the ice cube bags, salt was added to promote colder temperatures in
order to freeze the liquid mixtures. After shaking the bag containing the liquid mixture inside a bag containing ice cubes, the students checked to see whether their concoctions froze to become ice cream. A discussion then ensued why salt sprinkled on the ice cubes made a difference in the texture of the liquid mixture. The favorite part of the activity, however, was the sweet, smooth taste of homemade ice cream.
While attending an ice hockey tournament on Lake Placid in late January, Sanford H. Calhoun High School senior Austin McLoughlin sprung into action after a player was struck in the head and began having a seizure on the ice. “He actually excused an individual that was inappropriately administering CPR and took charge over the situation,” explained physical education teacher James Raucci. “He administered chest compressions after checking vitals, and when no heartbeat was present, he continued CPR.” Austin was able to establish a heart rate and moved the man into the recovery position. This course, which has been administered throughout the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District for the past few years, is financially funded by Forever 9 - The Robbie Levine Foundation. Founded in 2005 in memory of 9 year-old Robbie Levine of Merrick, who died of sudden cardiac arrest at his little league practice, the foundation raises awareness of the need for AEDs in youth sports. While it is a new New
York State Education Department mandate that high schools expose their students to AED and handson CPR administration, the district has been implementing this over the past three years. “It started as a pilot program at Merrick Avenue Middle School when my son was attending the school and then over the years we added it to more buildings,” said Jill Levine, founder of The Robbie Levine Foundation. Incorporated as a twoweek course during the physical education curriculum, The Levine Foundation also awards students a certificate of completion. “We are proud of Austin and thankful he and others have benefited from the January First Aid and CPR course,” Hollings added. This culminating activity applied principles learned about measurements, as well as the differences between a liquid, solid and gas. The ice cream making took place in the school’s designated STEAM (science, technology,

Raising Funds Sixth-grade students in Laura Koenig’s and Paula Locrotondo’s class at Wisdom Lane Middle School in the Levittown School District raised approximately $3,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. During the annual St. Jude Math-a-Thon, participants sharpened their math skills while helping children with
serious illnesses. For 26 years, Wisdom Lane Middle School has raised approximately $120,000 by encouraging its students to participate in the math-athon in which participants are sponsored by friends and family to solve math problems in a “fun book.” Wisdom Lane Middle School’s participation in the math-a-thon helps to provide the best possible
medical care for patients, regardless of their ability to pay. In addition to the money raised, students learned about the importance of helping others. Ms. Koenig is proud of all the students who participated in this annual event and is thankful for the support provided by the school staff.
Leaders Among Us From the time Bellmore students are enrolled in the district’s pre-kindergarten program, they are taught core values and develop the foundation for becoming leaders. As part of the character education program,
Shore Road School fifthgrade students examined the district’s core values of teamwork, integrity, respect, trust and dedication that define a Bellmore star and leader. The students then wrote an essay on the
qualities that define them as a leader. The essays were then displayed on a bulletin board in the hall titled “Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, there’s a Leader in Us All.”

The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that MacArthur High School seniorathlete Jared Wolfe received the National Football Foundation’s Jay Fiedler Award during the foundation’s Nassau County Chapter dinner. The Jay Fiedler Award is the foundation’s most prominent award, recognizing the nation’s most talented scholarathletes. This is the second consecutive year that a MacArthur High School
athlete has received this award. Jared and Division Avenue High School senior-athlete Anthony Anzano were also inducted into the National Football Foundation’s Hall of Fame. Jared is a wide receiver and running back on the team’s offensive line and line backer and safety on the team’s defensive line. Jared finished his high school football career with 104 catches for 1,312 yards and 16 touchdowns. A three-sport athlete,
Jared currently runs winter track and will play third base for the baseball team this spring. On last year’s Nassau County Championship baseball team, Jared was recognized as the Nassau County AA playoff game’s most valuable player. The district congratulates Jared on this prestigious accomplishment and much success in his college athletic career.
