The Wantagh School District is pleased to announce that Wantagh Elementary School Principal Dr. Randee Bonagura published a book titled “Embrace Makerspace: A Pocket Guide for Elementary School Administrators.” Published by Rowman & Littlefield, Dr. Bonagura’s book describes the considerations and practical strategies
administrators should consider upon setting up a Makerspace program in their schools. Makerspace is an educational initiative which brings students together in a designated location to design and create, equipping students with the 21st century skills of critical thinking, collaboration and communication. In writing the book,
Dr. Bonagura researched nationwide Makerspace pedagogy and based her premise on the school’s experiences with the initiative. “We are very positive about Makerspace here in Wantagh,” Dr. Bonagura said. “The program is about providing enrichment and creative experiences for all students.” Dr. Bonagura has served as principal for four years and was previously the district supervisor for reading. She received a doctorate in literacy studies and a bachelor’s in elementary education from Hofstra University and a master’s in school administration from the College of New Rochelle. I ended last week’s column hoping that this month of February would bring with it a little more sunshine into all of our lives… While this is a nice sentiment, of course we know that life does not always work this way, and there are plenty of storm clouds to weather along the way. This just reinforces the notion that we must all take the time to appreciate the little things in life, the special moments, those people we love and the many memories we share, as we simply never know when they will become precisely that… just a faded memory among many others. After the passing of my grandfather nearly a year ago, and the subsequent sale of the
house that my grandparents had called home for more than 50 years, there was obviously much cleaning out and sorting through mementos to be done. In some ways, this was the most difficult task of all. To me, nearly everything held some sort of significance, some deep emotional attachment which evoked so many precious recollections of years gone by. Of course, these are just objects, material possessions which hardly make up for the loss of the person they are associated with. But the photographs… those are truly special. And boy, are there photographs. I, being of the slightly OCD nature, coupled with my fervent love of all things photography, volunteered to take on the initial task
collages. Several months later, I’ve barely made a dent in the process. But it doesn’t matter. There’s no rush where memories are concerned. They should be carefully recollected, and savored. Every single photograph tells a story; and every story unlocks a treasure trove of feelings and emotions – some happy, some sad, some wistful… all meaningful in their own respective ways. And winter, while it may not bring a lot of sunshine into our lives, is the perfect time to take a moment to appreciate all the memories that do.
29th annual National Geographic Bee, for which they answered questions covering numerous facets of geography in the United States and the world. Both winners will join students from across the country in taking an online written test as part of the next round of competition. The top 100 scorers in each state will then be eligible
to compete in their state bee. The state winners will advance to the national championship rounds in Washington, D.C., where they will have the chance to win a $50,000 college scholarship. The district wishes Mitchell and Nicholas much success as they continue in the competition.

Michael Harrold of Jambo Productions took Bellmore fifth- and sixthgraders on a trip around the world during assemblies at Shore Road School. Sixth-grade students have been studying ancient river valleys and civilizations and Harrold’s presentation expanded their knowledge of
Egyptian, African, Asian and Indian civilizations and culture. Fifthgrade students have been studying western civilizations and also expanded their knowledge of the Inca, Aztec and Mayan cultures of Latin America. After the assemblies, Harrold shared artifacts he
collected on his journeys, including aspear from Uganda, an African seat, insects from different regions across the world, money and stamps. He shared personal anecdotes from his trips and allowed students to explore his many artifacts.

Writers Celebrated nearly two months, using books to search for ideas and supporting facts. The children were given the option of selecting a topic they felt they were an expert on, or picking one they wanted to become an expert in. Ultimately, they studied a wide range of subjects, from pumpkins, dolphins and athletes to patriotism and different time periods. After compiling their
research, they penned their nonfiction works, complete with a table of contents, introduction, glossary, index and author biography. At the celebration, the students shared their research with parents and family members, who rotated around the room to learn about the array of topics.

Reading Around the Room Merrick School District professionals, local officials and community members gathered at Chatterton School on January 20th to read to students as part of the school’s Community Read Aloud celebration. The event was part of Chatterton’s two-week “Dive Into Reading” Pick a Reading Partner program. Among those who read grade level-appropriate books to the students in grades K-6 were
Assemblyman David McDonough, Legislator Steven Rhoads, Town of Hempstead Councilman Gary Hudes, Hempstead Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad, members of the Merrick Police Department and Fire Department, Board of Education President Dr. Pamela Banks, district administrators and other influential community members. and how reading helped them to become successful adults. Three students in Sanford H. Calhoun High School’s Advanced Science Research program in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District were each recipients of a $200 research grant for their recent research proposals. Jonathan Ellison, Zachary Kaminiski and Alex Kuschner were each awarded a NYIT Mini Research Grant. January marks the midyear point where ASR students begin to present their topics at both local and regional research competitions. “This grant will help to offset the costs involved with materials and/ or printing expenses pertaining to their research projects,” said Jennifer Pefanis, the school’s research director. “All three boys have spent the last three years working tirelessly on their projects and it is with great honor that they accept this grant.” Ellison’s research, The SADD DONATIONS - Members of the SADD club at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School are collecting items to help needy children in Nicaragua. Students Against Destructive Decisions at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District has been collecting items to benefit needy children in Nicaragua. The club is seeking donations of school supplies, toiletries and personal hygiene products, small toys and coloring books. The items will be distributed by high school and college students to children in villages outside of the city of León.
Fifth-grade teacher Maria Regan, whose daughter will be making the trip for the fourth year, brought the idea to the school. She explained that by having the SADD club participate, Dinkelmeyer students could help fulfill the district’s mission of contributing to the global community. “We want our students to help the world community and what better way than to help children in another country,” said Ms. Regan. “I think we do a great
job of helping others in support of our mission statement. The students are learning that one small act of kindness can change a life.” SADD members helped spread the word by creating posters, making announcements and encouraging classmates to donate. They also saw photos from past trips to Nicaragua to truly understand the needs of the children who will be receiving the items.

field. “Protecting the environment and clean energy are very important to me.” Kuschner’s research, “Interactions of MMP14 Between Trilobite Gene Mutation and Kif5B Jaw Phenotype in Danio Rerio,” studied crossbreeds of zebra fish. “It determined the relationships between certain proteins and genes involved inside zebra fish,” Kuschner explained. “I was able to observe different crosses and matings of this fish.” Both humans and zebra fish are vertebrates, therefore Kuschner’s goal was to “map out relationships and interactions between the genes of super fish and hopefully find a model that is similar.” Their work will be presented at the Long Island Science Congress in April.

Aidan Araoz, an eighthgrader at Wantagh Middle School, is the winner of the school-level competition for the National Geography Bee. Prior to the holiday break, preliminary rounds were conducted in all classes, and 30 students qualified to compete in the schoolwide finals on January 20th. and District Supervisor of Social Studies Christopher Widmann, competitors were tested in a challenging contest on their knowledge of U.S. cities, historic places and continents, as well as U.S. and world geography. After the school competition, Aidan took a test for a chance to participate in the state finals. The National Geographic

Lessons in character education were promoted as the entire student body at Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District lent their hand to a “unity mural” outside of the school’s library. The project, led by Joyce Raimondo, founder and
director of Imagine That! Art Education, was open to all first- through fifthgraders. With smocks tied on and paintbrushes in hand, the students worked together to create a dynamic, colorful masterpiece that illustrates positive character traits and embodies
the school’s motto of respect, citizenship, trustworthiness and caring. Their teamwork and collaboration resulted in a masterpiece that teachers, staff and administrators will enjoy for years to come.
English as a New Language students at Meadowbrook Elementary School in the East Meadow School District rang in the Chinese New Year with a variety of activities on January 26th. Prior to the celebration, the second- and third-grade ENL classes studied the history of the Chinese New Year by reading stories, taking part in music and
dance ensembles, and learning phrases like “gung hay fat choy” (“may you become prosperous”). They also embellished their classrooms with customary decorations for an authentic atmosphere. As traditional Chinese music played in the background, the students rotated among stations where they created red envelopes containing lucky
money, made fortune cookies that held messages of wisdom, and designed paper lanterns in the traditional colors of red and gold. The students could also take photos in a freestanding photo booth, adorning themselves with props such as dragon masks, emperor hats and hand fans.

Eunice Lee, a seventhgrader at Jonas E. Salk Middle School in Levittown, was the school winner in the National Geographic Bee. Sponsored by the National Geographic Society, students who received the highest scores on a 35-question multiple-
choice test qualified for the semifinal round on January 27th. Contestants answered questions about states, continents, oceans and world cultures in a traditional bee format. Eunice won the competition against second-place winner Chris Schwartz by correctly
answering “Louisiana,” the state where the Cajun people reside. Seventhgrader Anna Conway was the third-place winner. Eunice then took an online test with 70 multiple-choice questions to qualify for the New York State Geographic Bee in Albany later this year.
Certificate of Recognition During their January 19th meeting, the East Meadow Board of Education recognized district resident Alan Hodish for his service to the community. The board presented him with a certificate of recognition for his many years of advocacy and dedicated service to the children of East Meadow. “This recognition is long overdue,” said Superintendent of Schools Leon Campo. “On behalf of the administration,
school district and board, I am particularly proud to recognize one of our most outstanding East Meadowites, Alan Hodish, for his involvement in the East Meadow community. Alan is highly deserving of our praise because he has worked tirelessly over many years to develop a relationship with our students that has made a difference in their lives.” The evening was punctuated with musical performances by the brass ensemble from
W.T. Clarke High School and kindergartners from Barnum Woods and Parkway elementary schools. Led by the Enrichment Through the Arts teachers, the Barnum Woods young children, sang “I’m a Little Snowman” to the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot” and “Down by the Bay” while the Parkway kindergartners dressed in patriotic colors, performed “Red, White and Blue.”

COORE and Prep for Life students who attend Sanford H. Calhoun High School, which houses the district’s special education program, are afforded the opportunity to participate in the Bellmore-Merrick Challenger Sports League. “The students were especially excited to show off their new BellmoreMerrick jerseys thanks to the Director of Athletics, Eric Caballero,” said Mike Pisano, a special education teacher and coach. Over the course of
six weeks, the students participated in bowling, basketball and volleyball games at their individual athletic ability level against numerous other school districts including Massapequa, Seaford and Amityville. “The outcome of the games is not about who wins or loses but the priceless memories that are made,” said Helen Kanellopoulos, assistant director of special education. This after-school activity
allows the district’s COORE and Prep for Life students to interact with each other outside of the school day and meet peers from other districts, Kanellopoulos said. “The 2016-2017 Challenger Bowling League was an absolute success and a lot of fun was had by all,” said Lisa Naud, a special education teacher and coach. “We are looking forward to an exciting Challenger basketball season.”

Habitat Build
The Leo Club at Wellington C. Mepham High School and the Key Club from the Meadowbrook Alternative Program in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District joined forces with Habitat for
Humanity during a build on January 18th. Leo Club adviser Josephine Parlagreco joined the students as they participated in their winter build and assisted with the construction of a home in Roosevelt.
“The students had a fantastic day and once again helped a family in need,” said Principal Michael Harrington. “We look forward to their continued efforts this year.”

Coach Bob Bury, who is known as the “Father of Calhoun Wrestling” and has been recognized at a state and national level, was the featured guest of honor. The day started with a junior varsity match and was followed by Calhoun

The varsity match immediately ensued and proved to be a tight contest with Mepham edging out Calhoun in bouts and eventually winning, 7-5. “Thanks to Mepham coaches Sean Arresto, Mike Muscara, Ken Richards and Rob Tobia for their part in making this a great event,” added Director of Athletics Eric Caballero. “Much gratitude and thanks are extended to coach John Hamilton for
all of his hard work in organizing the event and turning Mr. Caballero’s idea of hosting an ‘Alumni Wrestling Match at Calhoun’ a reality,” added Sean Arresto, Mepham’s head coach. “Coach Hamilton also organized an after-match gathering that proved to be a wonderful time for all who attended.” Calhoun’s current coaching staff looks forward to making the Alumni Wrestling Match an annual event.

ISLAND SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY
Hands On Lesson Chatterton School fifth-graders received a hands-on lesson about the importance of recycling with the help of the Long Island Sierra Club on January 20th. The lesson was led by L.I. Sierra Club Educational Committee members Sue Watins and Melanie Moeller, who spoke to Melissa Edelman’s class about the benefits of recycling. Among these benefits were conserving energy, saving natural resources, and reducing pollution and dependency on fossil fuels to help
the people around them such as classmates, teachers, friends and family. This followed with a discussion on how to treat others. A bar of soap represented unkind and hurtful language. As the soap touched the water, it repelled the pepper and pushed it to the side of the bowl. Students finished by adding a teaspoon of water and pouring it in the center of the water, to symbolize the sweetness of kind and
daily impact on the earth, as well as a Town of Oyster Bay recycling sticker for completing the challenge. The district extends a special thank-you to Linda Sabo, Chatterton’s social worker and adviser of the school’s Green Team, for promoting environmental consciousness in students and showing them how to help preserve the earth’s natural resources. In addition to the lesson, Chatterton does its part to reduce, reuse and recycle by having bins for plastic, glass, cardboard and paper in each of its classrooms.

Sixth-graders and their kindergarten buddies recently worked on a science and literacy activity that focused on respect, the character trait of the month for January at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. The buddies began by reading books together that focused on friendship, kindness and respect. They then sprinkled pepper into bowls of water to represent
mitigate the effects of climate change. They also demonstrated how to sort household items into three categories: those that can be placed in a recycle pail, those that can be brought to a collection/donation site and those that are unrecyclable. Following the presentation, the fifthgraders tested their understanding by separating jars, batteries, hairspray bottles and plastic containers into recycling categories. Parading Into the New Year Third-graders at Levy Lakeside School in the Merrick School District kicked off the Chinese New Year by creating dragon costumes and donning them in a school parade on January 27th. The parade was part of a 15 year-old tradition at the school in which all third-grade classes create their own 10-foot dragon costumes after studying the history, culture and traditions of China, particularly the New Year festivities. With tremendous enthusiasm for the celebration, students collaborated for two weeks to design authentic dragon costumes using paint, construction paper and streamers.
As the entire school filled the hallways for the parade, third-grade representatives spoke about the significance of the holiday over the PA system. The students explained that the Chinese New Year, currently the Year of the Rooster, traditionally marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of the planting season in China, and that the purpose of the parade is to celebrate different regional and traditional Chinese customs. They also explained some of the customary parade symbols, including the fish for surplus and abundance, the color red for happiness and good luck, and the major symbolic character –
the dragon – as embodying rain and good luck. In addition, they taught their peers the traditional phrase “gung hay fat choy,” meaning “may you become prosperous.” Following the announcement, celebratory Chinese music played over the loudspeaker as the entire third-grade class paraded through the hallways under their colorful dragon costumes while displaying customary signs and symbols of the holiday such as lanterns, roosters and fish. Students in grades K-6 joined in the celebration by sporting festive dragon masks and chanting “gung hay fat choy,” as the parade went by.
