Clarke High School’s valedictorians and salutatorians for the Class of 2024. East Meadow High School’s valedictorian and salutatorian are Maggie Li and Andrew Cheng, respectively; and W.T. Clarke High School’s valedictorian and salutatorian are Juliet Cimaglia and Lauren Henning, respectively. Maggie’s brilliance, unwavering work ethic and maturity have set her apart as a one-of-a-kind student at East Meadow High School. and Advanced Placement courses. Juliet has also earned commendable marks on her SAT. Juliet is a member of the National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, Rho Kappa Honor Society, English Honor Society, Italian Honor Society, and Business Honor Society. Juliet has numerous leadership positions including Key Club president, Robotics Club secretary and social media manager, Rho Kappa Honor Society president, varsity soccer team captain and was the Class of 2024 president in ninth and 10th grade. Juliet has earned the AP Scholar with Distinction Award, Scholar Athlete Award, Student of the Month in Business and Technology, and her artwork was selected for the East Meadow School District Art Gallery Exhibit. Juliet has earned a vital role at the magazine Just Allergy Things to raise awareness for people with allergies by spending countless hours designing posts for the magazine’s social

media account as well as writing her own articles. The district is proud to have Juliet as a leader in the school community and is excited to see where her future takes her. Her self-determination, kindness and academic achievements will certainly lead to her success. W.T. Clarke salutatorian Lauren Henning has set the bar with her work ethic since the time she entered high school. Her focus and determination have finally been recognized with the salutatorian honor. Due to her focus and conscientious work ethic, it is no surprise that she has earned a weighted grade point average of 109.06. Lauren has immersed herself in her schoolwork. She undertakes a rigorous course load in honors, college and AP level courses. She is in numerous clubs, honor societies and organizations at Clarke. Her extracurricular activities have shown that she is selfless and always striving to do more. Lauren continuously volunteers her time for great causes and afterschool organizations.

With each, Lauren takes on leadership positions, organizing events and spreading awareness of these organizations. She is a member of National Honor Society, American Sign Language Society, Math Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Rho Kappa, Science Honor Society, DECA, All District A Cappella, Peer Mentoring and Athletes Helping Athletes. She holds leadership positions as the student adviser for Athletes Helping Athletes, co-vice president for Science Honor Society, treasurer for the ASL Honor Society and administrative assistant for the orchestra. Lauren is also a talented athlete. She is a four-year varsity field hockey player and has been a leader for the team since the ninth grade. She received the award for All-Conference Scholar Athlete. Lauren is a very polite, mature young woman. She is a natural born leader, and her confidence is truly admirable. Lauren is someone that will change the world one day.

For 25 years, Levittown Community Council has brought fun, joy and happiness to the community through its well-attended and anticipated WinterFest event. This year’s celebration will take place on Saturday, February 10th from 11 AM to 3 PM at the Island Trees Public Library located at 38 Farmedge Road, Levittown. Admission to the event is free and there is entertainment, a magic

show, crafts and games for children and raffles for the adults. On board each year and a highlight of the event is a model train display offered by the Nassau Lionel Operating Engineers. Local schools and performers provide additional entertainment and community businesses offer fun activities. WinterFest originated as a Levittown 50th Anniversary event, which was adopted by the Council

since the year after when all the anniversary events were adopted by community organizations. Levittown Lions Club will provide free eye screening at the event as they have in previous years. Girls Who Code Form Group

A group of students at John F. Kennedy High School who share a passion for coding formed a school club last year, dubbed Girls Who Code. Faculty adviser and computer science teacher Carla Petroro oversees activities that are planned by four board members. At their Jan. 11 meeting, board members Jaclyn Cohen and Cailyn Puig explained specific checklist

of items for attendees to create a Scratch game. These included loops and variables such as scoring and restart options and conditionals such as winning messages, thus ending the game. “I have learned more about myself through this club,” Puig said. “I enjoy learning the activities ahead of the meetings and find it encouraging and fun to help others execute

their coding skills.” Goals of the club include helping students further their knowledge of computer science, software development, and games design. No prior knowledge of coding is required to join their monthly meetings. While members do not compete as a club, individual students have enrolled in Hackathons.

Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation. Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day. During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining

was available. But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining. The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous onsite and off-site volunteer opportunities are now available. While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site

positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/donation coordination. Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need. Fragments and Pegasus, student-published literary magazines at Wellington C. Mepham and Sanford H. Calhoun high schools, respectively, were both

recognized as a superior magazine by the National Council of Teachers of English. Nicole Maresca, Mepham faculty adviser and

creative writing teacher, said she was honored, and the rating marked a significant milestone for the magazine’s first contest entry. Fragments is among 375 student publications

nationwide that were entered in the contest. With a club staff of approximately 20 students, all are involved in the stages of production, including the creation of literary

and artwork, selection of pieces to publish, editing and layout. The annual publication of Fragments showcases student artwork, poetry, and prose from grades 9-12, reflecting a diverse range of genres and poetic forms studied by the students. Maresca added that “you will find many poems that illustrate a student’s deep understanding of a published work and provide a novel interpretation, an interesting response, or a mimicry of stylistic choices and craft moves.” “I am so glad that Ms. Maresca and the students have been formally recognized for their effort and hard work,” added Dr. Mary Allegretta, district English chairperson. “NCTE is a professional organization that has been around for more than 100 years, and it’s among the most respected professional organizations for teachers of English nationwide. So, this recognition is a big deal.” Calhoun’s literary magazine earned a rank above last year’s excellent

award with their superior rating. Student contributors selected a theme for each edition, aiming to share both written word and visual artwork connected to that theme. The magazine had six student magazine staff members, 14 contributing writers, and 13 contributing artists for the 2023 Pegasus edition, which focused on the theme of natural change. Faculty advisers Dawn Boland and Jason Boland oversee the production. “The literary magazine at Calhoun is a place for creative minds to contribute to the legacy that Pegasus chronicles,” Dawn Boland said. “As advisers, we are proud of the creative legacy that our students have created.” The REALM program publicly recognizes excellent literary magazines produced by students with the support of their teachers. REALM is designed to encourage all schools to develop literary magazines that celebrate the art and craft of writing.

A Brief History Of American Football Almost two-thirds of adults in the United States say they currently watch National Football League games. But American football is no longer relegated to the boundaries of the United States, as it is becoming a global sport. According to the International Federation of American Football, there are 80 countries with organized federations governing the game. Plus, thousands of youth and adult leagues exist all over the world. Even though soccer has long been a global sport, it seems the other kind of “football” is quickly catching up. The sport known as American football was borne out of the English sports of association football (soccer) and rugby. During

the late 19th century, elite Northeastern colleges took up the sport, playing a soccer-type game with rules adopted from the London Football Association. Intercollegiate matches began to spring up at schools such as Rutgers, Princeton, Harvard, and McGill University. Rugby-type rules became preferential among players and spectators. Walter Camp, known affectionately as the “Father of American Football,” transformed the rugbystyle game into the one that resembles American football today. Camp brought two key innovations to the game. The opening “scrummage” was eliminated, and a rule was introduced that required a team to give up the ball after failing to advance down

the field a specific yardage. Camp also developed the quarterback position, lines of scrimmage, and the scoring scale used in football today. Early games were controversial because of the high rate of injury. Even President Theodore Roosevelt stepped in to ask collegiate teams to revise regulations to make the game less brutal. The committee overseeing the rules would later become known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Thanks largely in part to the popularity of college football, professional football began to gain traction with the public. The American Professional Football Association was formed in 1920. That league

would later become the National Football League. The first televised NFL game occurred in 1939. Eventually, American football’s popularity would explode. Cheerleaders were introduced to the game in the 1960s. Currently, the

Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders are the most famous squad. Six teams in the NFL do not have cheerleaders: the Chicago Bears, the Cleveland Browns, the Detroit Lions, the New York Giants, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Green Bay Packers. Football games typically

last around 3 hours. The average attendance for an NFL game is 66,957 spectators. American football has become a multibillion-dollar industry. What developed on college campuses has grown into a worldwide phenomenon.

North Bellmore Accepting Applications For 2024-25 Pre-K Lottery The North Bellmore School District is accepting applications for its Universal Pre-Kindergarten program for the 2024-2025 school year. While the district recently received expanded grant funds and anticipates having a spot for all applicants, a lottery will still be held to assign placements. The program is contingent upon state funding. Children who will be 4 years old by Dec. 1, 2024, and will be eligible to enter kindergarten in September 2025, may participate in

TERMS OF SALE Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldier’s and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest

The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) the property securing same. The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The rate of interest and penalty which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount from which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. In Wantagh, Mandalay Student Hand Out Compliments Kindness is a part of daily life at Mandalay Elementary School in the Wantagh School District. To celebrate National Compliment Day on Jan. 24, students learned a meaningful way they can

be kind to one another. School counselor Donna Shulman and psychologist Maria Maleganos visited classrooms to discuss the importance of giving compliments. They said

that it is a way to show appreciation to people and spread joy. Good compliments, they added, are true, positive and specific. Students were asked to

write down a compliment they recently received and reflect on how it made them feel. Ms. Shulman and Ms. Maleganos also noted that giving a compliment should feel as good as receiving one.

To put their knowledge into practice, students wrote compliments to each other. In third grade classes, teachers assigned each student a peer to send a kind message. They made

“compli-mittens” – a paper craft of two mittens holding a heart. After brainstorming possible compliments, each student then selected one to write on the heart and share with his or her classmate.

Long Island Metro Lacrosse Foundation Welcomes 2023 Hall Of Fame Class The Long Island Metro Lacrosse Foundation, a chapter of USA Lacrosse, welcomed 11 players and coaches into its 2023 hall of fame class during the 38th annual ceremony held on Saturday, January 27. Among the inductees were two family members, James C. Metzger and Rob Pannell. Metzger, a standout player at Half Hollow Hills High School East and Hofstra University, also was recognized for his mentorship and as a Long Island lacrosse benefactor. His nephew is a former award-winning college player who has continued to set records and win awards with the MLL New York Lizards and PLL California Redwoods. Pannell also participated on three USA National Teams. Special awards were bestowed on Ed Wallace and Rosalia Gioia. The foundation’s mission is to share the positive spirit of lacrosse and support the highest ethical standards for all participants through annual initiatives that include targeted grants, scholarship programs, lacrosse educational clinics and events that raise awareness and resources to support the game. It collaborates with Nassau and Suffolk counties, and Metro New York, to improve the game. The organization’s board consists of men and women who coach and/or volunteer with teams from youth to post-collegiate levels, along with referees, umpires, organizers, managers, parents, supporters and others dedicated to lacrosse.
