The Levittown community gathered together for the Jonas E. Salk Middle School and General Douglas MacArthur High School wrestling teams annual Sumo to Support fundraiser to support a community member in need on January 11th.

Through their efforts, the teams raised $4,000. This was the third year that the middle school and high school wrestling teams hosted the event for a good cause. This year the focus was on helping Tara Dougherty, a mother of three MacArthur High School wrestlers

and two MacArthur High School graduates, who is undergoing cancer treatments. The whole family was present for the special evening where they were introduced by MacArthur wrestling coach Rob Paletta. “This fundraiser is to support one of our own,”

Leaving a (Paw) Print I recently received an e-mail for an event listing from a teacher at my old high school, which sparked a conversation about how many years it’s been since I roamed those very hallways myself {approaching 18, nearly half of my lifetime} and how it might be nice to stop by to say hello to the relatively few teachers who remain there after all this time. Which got me to thinking… there was a time when my fellow alumni and I couldn’t wait to “visit” after we graduated, popping in every few months or so to see what was new and exciting in the world of Lindy High. As the years passed, college came and went, and we found ourselves employed in our various fields of study, these encounters became few and far between. We no longer related to those teenagers who breezed by on their way to class, nor did we

see high school as the center of the only universe we had ever inhabited. We now had the world before us, one that included days not marked by a bell schedule, job descriptions not dictated by a syllabus. Sure, there was the occasional visit to the old college campus now; perhaps a special “guest” speaking engagement to a group of soon-to-be grads about to embark on their own adventures into the great world of career exploration. But that was where the academic connection ceased. Fast forward nearly two decades past these formative years, and the nostalgia for simpler times has returned. Having the opportunity to reconnect with those friends and former classmates has taken on added significance as the years have passed. Several have left us far too soon; others’ lives have taken

them to the far reaches of the country, making the advent of social media a welcome - and perhaps the only - connection. But among the hundreds that we graduated with, there are also the dozens who still reside right here on Long Island, instantly reachable and available to reminisce at any time. It’s a comforting thought, that ability to pick up where you left off at a given point, to chat about old times and new pursuits, and to realize - with rare exception - that we are all dealing with the same daily struggle to find that sense of fulfillment that was promised to us all those years ago. Perhaps a visit to the old high school stomping grounds is in order; a “refresher course,” if you will, courtesy of the very place where it all began. As they like to say in Lindy… once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog…

Leading up to the event, students participated in raffles to help raise money by picking the jar of who they thought would win each round. After each match, the sumo winner would pick a raffle ticket from their jar and that student would win a prize. Following the first round, the MacArthur varsity and JV wrestling teams wrestled against Mepham High School. Student versus student matches concluded the evening as participants

challenged their friends in the sumo suits. These students represented clubs and sport teams including football, cheer, volleyball, band, lacrosse, drama club and the school store. “We thank God every day for the community and how they have come together,” said Tara Dougherty’s husband John Dougherty. “It’s really outstanding to see how supportive and helpful everyone has been.”

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

“I believe all things happen for a reason” Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, said to me as we sat down to talk more in-depth about this international non-profit. It was not by coincidence that he and his wife crossed paths with Lawrence Hohler, retired Smithtown East HS teacher, and Joseph Kirima, primary school teacher in Kenya, to learn about what those two educators came together in hopes to form: a Kenyan orphanage. Hope Children’s Fund operates with the motto “Education Is Key” and for children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Mann explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family, hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. One of their favorites is of a young lady named Betty Gakii who entered their orphanage when she was little, did well and became a teacher, later got married and had children of her own, and now is the Administrative Assistant at this same orphanage! Kevin feels that he and his wife have received and learned much more from the orphans than they’ve given and taught them. With that being said, if you would like to help change the lives of orphans in Kenya, you can!

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Upon sponsoring a child, you will receive a photo and bio of them, and you can write letters/send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages to brighten their days. Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. Inner Beauty in Style Beautiful Me, an educational self-esteem program for girls, inspired a group of students at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District to spread a message about inner beauty. After taking part in the Hance Family Foundation’s Beautiful Me program, a group of 10 sixth-grade girls created their own series of age-appropriate activities. During the week of January 16th-19th, they visited kindergarten

through sixth-grade classrooms throughout the building to teach students that everyone is beautiful on the inside. Among the activities, children shouted out compliments to each other and wrote what they like about themselves on Post-it notes, which will become part of a schoolwide display. “I want them to get the feeling that everyone is beautiful in their own way,” said sixth-grader Gabriella Vallerugo, who said that the lessons took about a month to plan.

Added Isabela Cruz, “It’s important to love people for who they are, not what they look like or where they come from.” Mary Myers, who leads Beautiful Me as part of the district’s Prevention Program curriculum, said the goal is to help young girls build confidence. She is proud of the leadership role that the sixth-graders have taken to spread the message that “you can’t always judge a book by its cover.”

The original oak bookshelves were refinished in a dark brown stain, preserving some of the room’s original construction. “I was glad to see them preserved, as they are a gorgeous accent in the room,” added Walker.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District will host its annual faculty variety show, the Faculty Follies 2.1, on February 1st, at 7 p.m., at Wellington C. Mepham High School. Seeking Nominations Levittown Public Schools is seeking nominations for its annual Hall of Fame which honors the district’s best and brightest alumni who have become leaders in their fields of work, study or athletics. Nominees must have graduated from either Division Avenue, General Douglas MacArthur or Levittown Memorial high schools, a minimum of

10 years prior to being nominated. Candidates must have demonstrated outstanding qualities of citizenship and leadership and have made significant contributions to society. In addition, nominees must demonstrate these qualities in a manner that will inspire the students of the Levittown Public Schools in their pursuit of their careers and lifestyles.

Turning a Phrase in different colors and facing different directions. Students have to turn the shape around to find the hidden words and complete the quote. They then use a web browser to determine who said it. Instructional technology specialist Jenna Stack recently had students create their own circleshaped Snotes in a sixthgrade class at Saw Mill Road Elementary School. To

connect with the English language arts curriculum, they selected events from the book they are currently reading, “Bud, Not Buddy.” The challenge was creating an entire message in 80 characters or less, and only 20 characters per line. Ms. Stack taught the students how to create an encrypted message but not impossible to decipher.

A year ago, the girls from Sanford H. Calhoun High School winter track team would come up two inches and one second short of capturing the school’s first winter conference championship. The team vowed to never forget that feeling and this year they will redeem themselves by clinching a championship. They nabbed the Nassau Conference II track championship on January 17th, at St. Anthony’s Invitational. In the 600-meter, Calhoun sophomore Elizabeth Tuzzolo claimed second place for the girls, while Katie Corona took third and Nadya Resnick finished up in sixth. Elizabeth and Katie earned AllConference honors and the team took 15 points. They earned more points after the 55-meter high hurdles, with senior captain and returning all-state athlete Paige Sfiroudis cruising to an easy win and Heather Berberich capturing fourth place. Sfiroudis also won the Triple and Long Jump events, as well as scoring an unheard of 30 individual points. “I just wanted to perform

for my team, coaches and school,” she said. We knew this was the last chance we had to make history and I wasn’t going to let that pass. This victory was a true team win - we all contributed.” Coach Joe Migliano called Sfiroudis’ a ‘one-ofa-kind talent.’ “It’s hard to imagine that she never ran track before her sophomore year,” he said. “There isn’t an event that Paige can’t do, she’s one of the most wellrounded athletes I have ever coached.” In shot put, Madison Padro led Jamie Campanelli and Victoria Unz to a 1, 2, 3 finish grabbing a massive 24 points and becoming the conference champion. Tali Gekhman, Lindsay Sheridan and Julia frank would add 18 points to the teams total, taking second, third and fourth in the Race Walk. Gekhman and Sheridan earned AllConference honors. Sarah Tappeto nabbed second on the 300-meter dash, third in triple jump and would run on the team’s championship 4x400-meter relay. “She is a terrific athlete and fierce competitor,”

Migliano said. “Her potential is endless. Sarah has no idea how great she could be and I love that I get to coach her everyday.” Faith Dwyer, Emma Bhansingh, Alexandra Unz and Nadya Resnick (senior) would take the track and run the 4x800meter relay. Katie Corona, Sarah Tappeto, Samantha LeTorre and Elizabeth Tuzzolo took the 4x4-00meter relay. “I just wanted to get out fast and make sure I took it home for the team, in my head I knew I would never let the team down,” said Tuzzolo. “We didn’t know the score going into the race and coach always tells us that every point matters.” In the day’s last race, the 4x200-meter relay, Mia Advocate, Heather Berberich, Kayla Locasto and Kristina Losquadro took second place with just five meters to go. “The girls wanted it,” said Migliano. “We train 10 months out of the year with goals like this in mind. This was no magic trick or savvy coaching, it was all heart and dedication from them.”

Finding Their Passion Jonas E. Salk Middle School students in the school’s new archaeology club, established in Sept. 2017, merged ancient Greek god and goddesses into modern day society through their own digital stories on January 23rd. The project allowed students to showcase their creativity on the computer using PowerPoint or the program, “Storyboard That.” While reflecting on modern day life and

technology, each student created a digital story of what gods or goddesses would do in the 21st century, including how they would utilize the popular social media platforms of today. The after-school club is opened to Salk students of all grade levels who are interested in learning more about prehistoric people and their cultures, as well as ancient history. Under the guidance of club

advisers Angela Fallo and Renee Essex, the students work on projects relating to the study of archaeology each week. “I hope that students develop a deeper love for archaeology,” said Essex. “We do a lot of creative projects which students have displayed a great interest in and we are enjoying doing fun activities with them.”

Matthew Klein and Cameron Levy, both of John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, were recognized as 2018 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholars on January 9th. Nothing short of sheer commitment and sacrifice landed them here. They are two of 300 students acknowledged from across the nation and two of 46 from Long Island. Klein’s research, “Galaxy Cluster Assembly and Ignition of Active Galactic Nuclei,” was completed at SUNY Farmingdale. In layman’s terms, galaxy clusters are the largest structures in the known universe. Gauging their evolution is essential to understand basic properties of the universe. Klein researched more than 80 clusters, each containing 200-300 galaxy sources, to determine if there was a correlation between infalling galaxies and active galactic nuclei within a cluster. While the 150+ hours of research found that there was a negative correlation,

The drug used in his research, resveratrol, has been shown to extend lifespan, but its effects on stress resistance are unknown. His research revealed that the target enzyme of resveratrol, Sir2, operate in a common pathway to produce stress resistance and have an innate interaction between Sir2 and the stress response. Another drug was used as a base comparison. “This study has implications in the development of treatments that can increase resistance to a broad range of stressors, including aging and disease,” Levy explained. Levy is a highly competitive fencer, recently signed with Princeton University to play on the fencing team. He is currently ranked no. 20 in the nation, overall and often travels from school to the science lab to Brooklyn, where he trains five times per week. The Regeneron STS is the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition. Each scholar, selected from 1,818 entrants, receives a $2,000 award with an additional $2,000 going to his or her respective school. The 40 finalists chosen to compete in Washington, D.C., in March will be announced on January 23rd.

Research Discussion

Wrestling to the Title Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s John F. Kennedy High School wrestling team defeated Garden City on January 25th, with a 46-22 win to capture the Nassau League III title. Jack Krug became the 15th wrestler in Kennedy history to achieve 100 career wins. The squad boasts five wrestlers ranked in the top six in the Nassau County including Boaz Smart who is currently undefeated and

ranked no. 1 in Nassau and seventh in New York State. Other ranked wrestlers include Greg Brach (99 pounds), Krug (182 pounds), Brandon Mercado (106 pounds) and Dan Shafran (195 pounds). Greg Brach and Boaz Smart won the Shoreline Tournament on January 20th at New Rochelle High School. “This is one of the toughest in season tournaments in the state,” said coach Brian

DeGaetano. Brandon Mercado also made the finals and lost a close 6-4 match to the third ranked wrestler in New York State. “Smart became the first wrestler in school history to place,” DeGaetano added. The team is currently ranked seventh in Nassau and holds a current record of 11-3 in dual-meets. They now move on to individuals and then New York State competitions.

Winning Essayists The Jerusalem Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized Wantagh High School junior Megan Fehling as a firstplace winner in the New York State Christopher Columbus Essay Contest. In addition, Wantagh Middle School eighthgrader Juliana Rose and seventh-grader Jason LaPadula are winners in the regional 2017-2018 DAR American History Essay Contest. The annual DAR essay contests were established to encourage students to think creatively about

the nation’s history and to learn about historical events. High school students were instructed to write an essay relating to the topic “Advantages and Disadvantages of Working Relationships Between Foreign Parties” and to explore why Christopher Columbus, an Italian, managed to convince a Spanish monarch to fund his voyage. Middle school participants had to write an essay on the topic “World War I: Remembering the War to End All Wars.” Each essay was judged on historical accuracy, adherence to

the subject, organization of material, interest and originality, spelling and punctuation and grammar and neatness. As a first-place state winner, Megan will now enter her essay in the Northeast Regional contest. Juliana and Jason will enter the Northeast States DAR contest. All three students are also invited to present their essays at a DAR luncheon in May. Wantagh’s social studies department congratulates the students on this outstanding academic achievement.

In addition to the bustle of the kindergarten classroom, the slight sound of peeps came from an incubator in Fran Bauer’s and Christine Wuchte’s classrooms at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore. For several weeks, the students have been studying the lifecycle of chickens and other oviparous animals and have had the unique opportunity to observe chicks firsthand.

For their study, farmers from Quiver Farm in Pennsylvania delivered fertilized eggs, an incubator and supplies and an egg carton filled with plastic eggs depicting the different stages of incubation. The students also met rooster Jack and Jill the hen as they learned about the responsibilities of being new farmers. During the interdisciplinary science unit, students read and sang about chickens,

named each of the birds and used mathematics to calculate their approximate hatching dates. Upon arriving to school after the weekend, the kindergartners were excited to see that several of their chicks had hatched. Making a circle on the classroom floor, the teachers placed the chicks on paper for the students to observe their fuzzy friends. After the completion of the unit, the chickens returned to the farm.

The Brain Show Students at Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District recently showed off their brainpower by answering questions during “The Brain Show.” According to its website, the Brain Show is an educational trivia contest with the authentic look and feel of a live television game show equipped with

podiums, buzzers and microphones. Divided into three teams, students in grades 2-5 went head-to-head answering questions related to classroom curriculum such as math, biology, geography and more. After three questions, new teams were created to allow as many students as possible to participate in the fun.

Encouraged by a cheering audience, teams also racked up points between rounds by successfully completing dance challenges they had learned prior to the start of each new game. Bowling Green extends a special thank you to its PTA for organizing this interactive program.

When Wantagh Middle School music teacher Matthew Carlin is not teaching students chorus or music studio, chances are he is performing with his rock band or writing scores for professional television shows. On January 15th, Carlin was flown to Los Angeles to create arrangements at SONY Studios for contestants in the new Fox television show “The Four.” The whirlwind weekend also involved meeting with producers and working on ranges, vocal types and genres suited to the contestants to create the best live arrangements. Additionally, Carlin’s current band, Sir Cadian

“The Sing Off,” where they competed and were eventually eliminated. The group’s connections with SONY Studios producers and a stint on Fox’s “The X-Factor Season 2,” has led Carlin and YellowJackets colleagues with opportunities to work on vocal arrangements and to create charts for shows that are recorded in the studio, located in Culver City, Los Angeles. Carlin’s five-piece band is based out of New York City and its albums are available on music and streaming sites. Its music has been featured in motion pictures starring Danny Glover and Alec Baldwin. In addition, the band’s music was featured on the video game “Nascar Heat 2.” Carlin said his experiences in Los Angeles were amazing. “Working on ‘The Four’ was a wonderful experience that was well worth the jet lag,” he said. As for his experience playing for the RADD charity, Carlin said, “We loved performing for an amazing cause and helping to raise money to support this worthwhile organization.”

Aiming to Strengthen Six administrators and teachers from the Levittown Public Schools recently attended the K-8 conference “How to Make Math Count” at Molloy College to share their expertise with fellow educators. Hosted by the Nassau County Mathematics Teachers Association and the Nassau County Association of Math Supervisors, the day featured a variety of workshops to meet the curriculum and assessment concerns of elementary and middle school teachers. The annual conference was attended by over 400 teachers and administrators from Nassau, Suffolk and the

tristate area. Levittown attendees included Director of Mathematics and Business Dr. Ellen Stegman, Assistant Director of Elementary STEAM John Towers, Abbey Lane fourth-grade teacher Paul Speranza, Jonas E. Salk Middle School sixth-grade teacher Kim Welsch, Gardiners Avenue fifth-grade teacher Nicole Corron and kindergarten/ resource room teacher Gloria Kreutzberg. With the exception of Dr. Stegman, an organizing committee member, each presented on different topics during the event. Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts Kelly Jones explained, “Band Day is an excellent way for the students to become acquainted with the middle school and high school teachers and to realize what they have to look forward to.” Under the direction of teachers Mindy Dragovich

and Dan Aviles, students in grades 5-12 started off the day through participation in clinics and sectionals run by upperclassmen. The day commenced with a Band Day Festival Concert in the gymnasium in which the students collectively played Mark Williams’ “Honor Roll March,” under the baton of guest conductors Susan Babcock and Nathaniel Brinkman. Performances of Daniel Butterfield’s and Michael Miller’s “Tribute for Band” and Steven Shafer’s “Prism” were also followed by Wantagh High

Where Truth Lies

Tony Award winning Music Director Ted Sperling visited the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) recently, where he conducted a Master Class for the school’s music and theatre students. Mr. Sperling, who is about to start rehearsals as the music director for Lincoln Center’s revival of My Fair Lady, opening in March 2018, won the 2005 Tony and Drama Desk awards for his orchestrations of The Light in the Piazza, for which he was also music director. An original cast member of the Broadway musical Titanic, Mr. Sperling played bandleader Wallace Hartley. His off-Broadway credits as music director include A Man of No Importance, Wise Guys, A New Brain, Saturn Returns, Floyd Collins, Falsettoland, and Romance in Hard Times. Mr. Sperling also has numerous Broadway credits as music director, conductor and pianist, including the rapturously received revivals of Fiddler on the Roof, The King and I, South Pacific, Guys and Dolls, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Full Monty, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Angels in America, My Favorite Year, Falsettos, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Les Misérables, Roza, and Sunday in the Park with George. During the Master Class, LIHSA students performed their college audition selections for the Tony Award winner, who offered feedback about their performances. The class is now anxious to put his feedback about song choices, posture, tempo, relating with the audience, and connecting with the song and lyrics, into action to improve their audition pieces. The Master Class program is part of the school’s ongoing mission to provide its students with inside looks at the industries they are pursuing, and to introduce them to mentors within their chosen fields.

Poster Contest Winner Wantagh Middle School student Ava Kornbluth was recognized as a New York State winner in the NYS K-12 Kids Safe Online Poster Contest, sponsored by the Enterprise Information Security Office of the NYS Office of Information Technology Services. In conjunction with National Cyber Security Awareness Month, this annual contest

seeks to engage students in thinking about cyber security through the creation of posters that will encourage peers to use the internet safely and securely. A student of art teacher Jaclyn Gentilesco, Ava’s brightly colored poster depicted a dinosaur inside a computer monitor with the message “Make Cyberbullying Extinct.”

Contest officials received more than 900 entries from around the state, and Ava’s entry will now be sent to compete on the national level. The Wantagh School District congratulates Ava on this academic accomplishment and extends best wishes for success in the national contest.

In 2011, Forever 9-The Robbie Levine Foundation partnered with the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District to start a pilot program at Merrick Avenue Middle School, certifying all students in CPR/AED. “The program was so quickly a success, that it gradually expanded to all of the district’s middle and high schools,” said founder and local parent Jill Levine. “We realized that the most logical way to reach all students was in physical education class. Our foundation trained all of the physical education teachers to become actual CPR/AED trainers, and every student that goes through our schools is

trained in these lifesaving skills every year.” These trainings are a success due to the district and teachers embrace of the program and ability to incorporate it into the already existing curriculum. This collaboration was recently celebrated at the 10th annual Dealing with Hearts Gala, which fundraises for the foundation. “Our teachers are therefore directly responsible for lives saved, by some of the students that they have taught,” Levine added. While physical education is an integral part of the educational process throughout the district, it is programs such as these

that elevate students’ capabilities in real-world situations. “We are very fortunate to be able to partner with Forever 9-The Robbie Levine Foundation, to offer hands-on instruction in CPR and AED for nearly 5,600 students in our district,” said Eric Caballero, director of physical education, athletics, driver education and health. “This initiative would not be possible without the generous support of the foundation. The product of our partnership in this endeavor is the opportunity for our students to have the skill set to save a life.”

activities at the Levittown Public Library during district’s Summer Reading Extravaganza, had the opportunity to put their names in a raffle for a special prize. Five student winners from each of the six elementary schools were given a goodie bag handed to them by Grabenstein. “It is my hope that students realized how powerful writing is and how the choice in an author’s words make the story come to life,” said Slattery. “Our fifth grade students seemed so inspired by Mr. Grabenstein’s assembly and have been encouraged to use their voice to tell their story.”
