Fillmore soon ventured into politics as well, using his Whig connections to run for the House of Representatives, where he served for eight years. By 1848, Fillmore was realizing even more ambitious pursuits, as he was elected to serve as Taylor’s Vice President. He would not serve long in that role, as an illness that befell President Taylor on July 4, 1850, would claim his life just five days later. That thrust Fillmore

into the presidency and right into the heart of heated debate surrounding the Compromise of 1850, a package of bills that aimed to defuse tensions and confrontations between the slave states of the south and the free states of the north. Fillmore would ultimately sign all five bills in the Compromise of 1850 into law, but it was his support for the Fugitive Slave Act, a controversial element of the compromise

Millard Filmore was the 13th President of the United States, assuming the nation’s highest office when President Zachary Taylor died in office after serving a little more than a year as president. Fillmore, a Whig lawyer from western New York who served as Taylor’s Vice President, was the last American president who was not affiliated with the Democratic or Republican parties. An early member of the Whig party, in 1851, Fillmore became the only president in American history to appoint a Whig Supreme Court Justice after his recess appointment of Benjamin Robbins Curtis was confirmed by the United States Senate in December of that year. Fillmore rose to occupy the White House after a humble upbringing in the Finger Lakes region of New York. At 15, the future president was apprenticed to a cloth dresser but was admitted to the bar in 1823 and soon became a successful lawyer in Buffalo.

Showcase Of Skills Levittown students enrolled in MacArthur High School’s business classes proudly displayed their group and individual projects during the business department’s fourth annual student showcase. Student work was presented in the areas of business ownership and marketing, computer programing, Advanced Placement computer science, desktop

publishing, digital media production, introduction to business, computer applications, sports and entertaining marketing, trial law and web design. Seniors Emily Kirincic and Dan McQuillan are enrolled in the digital media class. During the showcase they demonstrated how they could place students and parents in front of a green screen and change the background, as seen in television. Brian

Newins, who has taken both web design I and II, demonstrated how his website called “Merry Christmas” allows family members to record their Christmas lists each year. “I am impressed by the projects I have seen this evening,” Assistant Superintendent for Business William Pastore said. “These students are gaining many of the skills necessary for working in today’s business world.”

Senior Semifinalist W. T. Clarke High School senior Pavithran Ravindran has been named a semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search competition, the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition. Pavithran was recognized for his research project, “Formation of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) Inclusion Compounds with Urea and Thiourea.” Only 300 high school seniors were named semifinalists in the competition. Semifinalists were selected from more than 1,800 entrants from 460 high schools in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and five American and international high schools overseas. Pavithran will receive a $1,000 award from the Intel Foundation with an additional $1,000 going to W. T. Clarke High School.

Pavithran explained that Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), or PHB, is a plastic with many medical applications, including as a possible drug-delivery system. The only issue with PHB, he explained, is that it is very brittle in its natural state, and natural plastics are randomly organized so it is difficult to study single chains by themselves. To try and understand single-chain PHB better, Pavithran encapsulated the plastic within two host molecules, urea and thiourea. After washing the host molecule away, the PHB was more organized since only single chains fit in the hosts. He then studied the crystallization behavior and found that the PHB from urea is less brittle and thus more feasible for medical applications. His research was

conducted at the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University in Professor Nadarajah Vasanthan’s research lab this summer. W.T. Clarke High School research and biology teacher Erika Rotolo was also instrumental in Pavithran’s success. “This is one of the most amazing things that has ever happened for me,” said Pavithran. “Ever since watching a documentary on the Intel Science Talent Search, my high school goal has been to reach this point where I am able to conduct research that, I feel, really makes an impact.” Pavithran was recently accepted into Princeton University, and is currently waiting to hear responses from other colleges. He intends to study bioengineering.

with Levittown teacher of the deaf Meaghan Lang. Using their dominant hands, the students learned how to form the letters of the alphabet and played games to reinforce the

that required all escaped slaves, upon capture, be returned to their masters and that officials and citizens in free states had to cooperate with the law. Signing and enforcing the act would come back to haunt Fillmore in 1852, when he decided to run for a full term as President. The Whig Party, still upset that Fillmore supported the act, chose not to nominate Fillmore. That decision effectively ended Fillmore’s political career, though he did make a memorable run as a third party candidate in the election of 1856. In that election, Fillmore was the presidential nominee of the American Party, winning 21 percent of the vote, which was one of the best showings a third-party presidential candidate ever produced. Millard Fillmore passed away on March 8th, 1874, from complications of a stroke.

Winter’s Wrath So, one epic snowstorm/ blizzard/”Juno” (who names these things, by the way?) into the Winter of 2015, and I’ve just about had my fill. How about you? As lovely and peaceful as a blanket of freshly fallen snow looks on the landscape, unfortunately, “snow days” only last for about one day, if that. Once the plows emerge, and the salt and sand turns the pristine landscape into a mountain range of dirty, frozen boulders, the novelty wears off pretty quickly – even faster if you are the one responsible for shoveling it. This past week, after hibernating for as long as possible and savoring the

“day off,” I ventured into the great void of white, shovel and scraper in hand, and attempted to determine which mound might be my car. After wading through the untouched walkways and parking lot of my complex, it was time to begin the dreaded clearing-off-the-car process. Easier said than done. After standing on my tiptoes, vainly trying to reach the summit, I was able to push off most of the twofoot accumulation – only to have a mini-avalanche fall to either side of my car. What had been knee-deep snow was now waist-deep. Spectacular. And so it went, for hours, as I slowly made headway. Two things occurred to me during this time. #1 – I

desperately need a larger shovel, and #2 – I need to move to a warmer climate. Immediately. I realize that one major snowstorm through the first six weeks of winter qualifies as fairly fortunate. But seriously, did we need to make up for a season’s worth of snow totals in just one day? Mother Nature sure doesn’t play around. Add to that the fact that February – statistically speaking, according to the too-gleefulfor-my-taste newscasters – is the snowiest month of all and, well, refer back to point #2 above. In lieu of that, I suppose I could at least go shovel shopping before the next big one hits.

The Division Avenue High School wrestling team placed second at the Ross Cordell Rotary Tournament in Oneonta, New York on January 3rd4th. Wrestlers Francis Alexander, Chris Ponce and Ricky Stamm also won their respective weight classes. “It felt really good to see

our hard work payoff and see everyone perform very well at the tournament,” Stamm said. “We were fighting against the odds because we were only able to send 10 out of 14 competitors to wrestle.” In addition, Francis Alexander won his 100th match during the tournament. “It was a surprise,” Alexander said.

“I knew I was close to my 100th win, but I didn’t know that was the match. I was caught a little offguard.” Coach Bob Bennett, Principal Joan Lorelli and Division Avenue students and staff congratulate the team and Francis Alexander on these notable athletic accomplishments.

Lamp Creation Eighth-graders in Penni Miller’s wood and electronics class at Wantagh Middle School learned how to craft a lamp out of four-inch PVC piping. The project required the students to use a ripsaw and hacksaw, and to employ wiring skills and simple technology principles to finish their craft. They cut a metal rod,

which was then threaded with wiring, and cut out a pattern in the PVC piping to decoratively embellish the lamp. Sanding, spray painting and equipping the lamp with a switch completed the project. “The class has been learning about principles they can use later on,” Ms. Miller said. “They also learned that the use of these tools often crosses

over to other projects.” The wood and electronics class is an eighth-grade elective for which students receive half of a high school credit. The students will soon learn how to craft a wood charging station. Ms. Miller thanks Jonathan Weiss of N & S Electrical Supply in Huntington Station for donating the electrical wiring supplies.

SEASON OF GIVING - Three local non-profits will split a $5,000 donation from the Long Island credit union NEFCU, as part of its fourth annual “Season of Giving” holiday promotion that asks Long Islanders to vote on which local charity or nonprofit is most deserving of the donation. The winners of NEFCU’s “Season of Giving” were: The Ashley Wade Foundation, Massapequa Park; Ruff House Rescue, Rockville Centre; and Golden Paw Society, Huntington. Affecting Change In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, third-grade students in Arlene Berman’s and Ann Sallustro’s classes at Mandalay Elementary School in Wantagh put their knowledge of the First Amendment into practice to effect change in the school’s policy on outdoor recess during winter. Carrying posters and signs, the students staged

a peaceful and respectful sit-in in front of the main office, calling on Principal Marie Pisicchio to amend the rules concerning the temperature cutoff to go outside. Under the previous policy, the minimum temperature for students to go outside was 36 degrees. However, after back-and-forth dialogue with Ms. Pisicchio, the students were able to

reach a compromise. They are now allowed to go outside during recess when the temperature is 35 degrees or above, with consideration of wind chill, rain, ice, mud and wind. “The students learned that because of the First Amendment, they have the ability to effect change through peaceful protest,” Ms. Berman said.

The collective music of more than 100 instruments reverberated through the halls of Wantagh High School as student-musicians in grades 5-12 performed during the ninth annual Band Day Festival Concert on January 24th. Under the direction of conductors Mindy Dragovich and Dan Aviles, the students performed F.W. band instruments. The younger students also became more familiar with the upperclassmen through a variety of games. Dragovich told the parents and staff that she could not be prouder of the students’ performance, as well as the middle and high school instructors’ and Band Council’s assistance and efforts during Band Day. “The older students acted like friends, mentors, and brothers and sisters, making the event so successful,” she said.
