Notice is hereby given that I shall, on the 16th day of February, 2016 through the 19th day of February, 2016, beginning at 10:00 o’clock in the morning each day, in the Legislative Chambers, First Floor, Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building, 1550 Franklin Avenue, Mineola, New York, sell at public auction the tax liens on certain real estate, unless the owner, mortgagee, occupant of or any other party in interest in such real estate shall have paid to the County Treasurer by February 11th, 2016 the total amount of such unpaid taxes or assessments with the interest, penalties and other expenses and charges against the property. Such tax liens will be sold at the lowest rate of interest, not exceeding 10 percent per six month period, for which any person or persons shall offer to take the total amount of such unpaid taxes as defined in Section 5-37.0 of the Nassau County Administrative Code. Effective with the February, 2016 lien sale Ordinance No. 175-2015 requires a $125.00 per day registration fee for each person who intends to bid at the tax lien sale. Here’s Hoping By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Hope: A feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen. And so it begins. February, the month of anticipation, from furry groundhogs predicting the forecast to expressions of love and affection come Valentine’s Day. Is there anyone who isn’t even the slightest bit glad to bid January farewell? Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to

say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netflix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Here’s to hoping that February provides the perfect precursor to spring, and all the beauty and wonderment it brings. Plus, we have an extra day to take advantage of this year, a bonus opportunity if ever there was one. Now all we have to do is make use of it, and of all those clichéd philosophies we want so badly to believe in. Whatever it is you are hoping for, may you have the courage to go after it. Good things come to those who wait; but a pointed step in the right direction surely doesn’t hurt. Here’s to February, to frosted windowpanes and picturesque winter sunsets and the beginnings of revitalization. Oh, and of course Buddy the Betta’s 1st birthday. Priorities humans, priorities.

Student Spotlight THE BLUE GLASSES SUBMITTED BY: COLLIN SLATTERY, AGE 11, EAST LAKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Vrooommm! The sound of the car engine was all I could hear. I just got back from the eye doctor. Not good. I knew that someday I would get them, but now? I was only 3 years-old. I looked at my mom and brother. They were talking, but I could not hear them. My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t. Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly. My brother hit the “speaker” button on her phone. “Guess who is going to look even more handsome?” My dad guessed me on the first try. About five more minutes passed, and we were rolling down a “one-

way” parking lot entrance. I saw these menacing looking penguins out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short. They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it. I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot. When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs

of glasses. I saw a bunch of chairs with a life-sized Mickey Mouse. I took a seat… “Slay-terry?” an old woman croaked. My mom, Aidan and I stood up and walked over. The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

The rate of interest and penalty at which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount for which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all amounts deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase shall be of no further effect. Time is of the essence in this sale. The AHA’s Go Red For Women movement focuses on women’s heart health awareness in February because far too many women are still unaware of the facts that heart disease is their number one killer-killing more women than all forms of cancer combined; or that the symptoms of heart

attack can be different in women vs. men, causing women to delay seeking treatment; or that ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for heart disease or stroke. This lack of awareness means that more women than men are dying from heart disease and stroke. Go Red For Women’s goal is to save women’s lives. The good news is that more than 80% of heart disease events in women can be prevented by making simple lifestyle changes like eating healthier, quitting smoking and exercising 30 minutes daily. On January 19th, Merrick Avenue Middle School (MAMS) students in Mrs. Beinert’s class were treated to a musical workshop with guest artist, Jason Kloos. Kloos, a MAMS alumnus, is a singer/songwriter, guitarist and pianist currently perusing his degree in music therapy. Since discovering music therapy, Kloos has interned and volunteered at several different special needs

facilities on Long Island. “Music has always helped me to create, grow and become the person I am today,” Kloos said. “It is my hope and mission to help others develop and recognize their own unique potential and identity through music.” The students spent the period working on following directions, motor skills, communication and social skills through singing songs, exploring

rhythms and expressing themselves through various forms of music. “This type of experience for students and staff continues to reinforce the district’s philosophy that music is a universal language for which everyone can share and be a participant,” said Cheryl Fontana, director of Fine & Performing Arts and Adult Education.

Day of Service On January 16th, students from all over the district joined their efforts and delivered the donations to local charities. On January 26th, the middle school ambassadors delivered donations to the local elementary schools. The elementary buildings from both Merrick and Bellmore were extremely grateful, and excited to hear about the

work students put in. “All in all, the MLK Day of Service was an outstanding event that provided valuable goods to those in need, and provided the students of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District a priceless, lifelong lesson,” said Andrew Del Rosario, assistant principal at Grand Avenue.

Optimum Community visited Wellington C. Mepham High School recently to present the seniors who participated in the fall Senior Service Learning Project with a $1,000 donation to their charity (Tuesday’s Children) in recognition of their participation in the Charity Champions contest. The Charity Champions is a contest which promotes volunteerism and helps students raise money for a charity of their choice. Since September, seniors in the Participation in Government classes and the Senior Experience program at Mepham have worked together to raise more than $7,000 for

Tuesday’s Children. The organization has made a long-term commitment to every individual impacted by the events of September 11th, 2001 as well as those who have been impacted by terrorist incidents worldwide. They did so by selling 275 flags for Mepham’s first Field of Honor which was displayed on the front lawn of the school from November 1st to December 9th. In addition, students spearheaded Mepham’s most successful Battle of the Classes to date while also holding “penny wars” to raise money for Tuesday’s Children. Many students traveled to New York City on Veterans Day to make care packages at Tuesday’s

Children’s headquarters. After learning about the events that led to Sept. 11 for three weeks in their classes, all of the students traveled to NYC to visit The National 9/11 Memorial and Museum. Assemblyman David McDonough joined Optimum Community in commending the students for their efforts, and the students and teachers presented the representatives from Tuesday’s Children with a $1,000 check. Mepham’s project will now be eligible to win an additional $5,000 for Tuesday’s Children if it is selected as the regional winner in the spring.

Symposium Semifinalists Two Sanford H. Calhoun High School seniors were recently selected as semifinalists for the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS). Katherine Ratner and Brian Kishinevsky, both Advanced Science Research students, will advance to the final round and present their research on February 7th. Katherine’s topic is “Power Dissipation of Tropical Cyclones in the Atlantic Basin by SubRegion of Origin.” “After watching the results of Hurricane Sandy, which was only a tropical storm when it

made landfall in the North East, I began to wonder if the current rating for hurricanes was enough to predict the potential damage a storm could cause,” she said. Katherine plans to major in Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University in the fall. “Because of ASR I have experience in the field I plan to spend my life working in, and confirmation that I want to pursue research,” Katherine added. Brian’s topic is “Orbits of Curves on a 4 Holed Sphere.” “I chose to research mathematics because math

is fun,” he said. “Through my three years in the ASR program, I learned what science research really means: the hard work, the discussion of ideas and much paperwork.” JSHS is designed to challenge and engage students (Grades 9-12) in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Individual students compete for scholarships and recognition by presenting the results of their original research efforts before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers.

Nicole Fegan and Paulina Fein, both seniors in the Sanford H. Calhoun High School Advanced Science Research Program, were recently named Intel Science Talent Search Badge Winners. Intel Science Talent Search entrants are eligible to earn this distinction for writing exemplary research papers. Nicole’s topic is “Accumulation of Mercury by Sphagnum Moss near a Sewage Sludge Incinerator.” “I fell in love with chemistry during my sophomore year, and that continued when I took

AP Chemistry,” she said. “I soon discovered that environmental chemistry was one of the most accessible and relevant topics of chemistry, and so when I was presented with a project centered on mercury in the atmosphere, I was instantly enticed.” Nicole was accepted to Brown University as an early decision applicant and plans to concentrate in both chemistry and mathematics. Paulina’s research topic is “The Underlying Causes of Disparity in Published Deep Brain Stimulation and Cognition Studies.”

“I chose this topic because I am fascinated by idiopathic disorders, human cognitive functioning and directly improving patients’ lives,” she said. “I wanted to discover not only an explanation for an interesting concept, but also explore the applications of my research on individual patients.” Paulina will attend Columbia University in the fall and plans to pursue scientific research while studying Latin American and Caribbean Studies and Classics.

Letters of Intent Seven seniors at Sanford H. Calhoun High School recently signed letters of intent to play athletics for various colleges and universities. Before their peers and school officials, Assistant Principal Dr. Neil Testa addressed the studentathletes and prepared a video montage to display their athleticism. “Each of these Calhoun athletes has not only demonstrated their athletic abilities at the highest level, but has also shown dedication and commitment to their teammates, their school

and their community,” Testa said. Nicole Imhof will be playing softball for University of Massachusetts Amherst, a division I school. Lauren Hilke will be playing lacrosse for Kutztown University, a division II school. Kimberly Pike will be playing basketball for State University of New York (SUNY) at Potsdam, a division III school. Derek Abitz will be playing lacrosse for SUNY Plattsburgh, a division III school. Dylan Hughes will be playing baseball for Queens College, a division

II school. Paige Lewis will be playing lacrosse for Adelphi University, a division II school. Taylor Iacono will be playing soccer for Adelphi University, a division II school. “We hope that your experiences here as Calhoun athletes stays with you throughout your collegiate career and beyond, and we hope that one day you will come back and share your experiences as well as your own advice to future generations of Calhoun athletes,” Dr. Testa said in closing.

Justice League In the Merrick School District, Lakeside Elementary School fifthgraders in Shari Dorfman and Ruth Rosenberg’s class studied historical individuals who defended justice in honor of civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Both classes began the lesson by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, discussing the meaning of “justice for all” and

singing “What Can One Little Person Do?” by Sally Rogers. Following the opening discussion, Ms. Dorfman and Ms. Rosenberg grouped their students into pairs where they identified individuals in history who stood for justice. Students read picture book biographies of a historical individual such as Susan B. Anthony, Cesar Chavez, Elizabeth

Cady Stanton and Gordon Parks. After reading their biographies, students completed a sheet that highlighted their defenders of justice, including the issue they faced, who helped them and who stood in the way. Concluding the activity, students partnered with other pairs to create a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting one other’s defender of justice.

Zoo of Love Bowling Green Elementary School thirdgraders are sending a zoo of love to children at Stony Brook University Hospital this Valentine’s Day. They were inspired by the story of Stony Brook University Hospital doctors

who reconstructed the face of Dunia Sibomana, a young African boy who was mauled by chimpanzees near Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Hearing of Dunia’s story, students wanted to send

warm regards to young patients. They decided to create a zoo of animal Valentine’s Day cards with poems hoping children make a quick and safe recovery. The zoo consists of bunnies, tigers, bears, penguins and pigs.

During the East Meadow School District’s January 14th Board of Education communication meeting, members of the board, central administration and faculty honored East Meadow High School alumnus Clay Benjamin Fried for his Eagle Scout ranking in Troop 157. Clay received the Superintendent’s Award for excellence upon achieving

the highest advancement rank in Boy Scouting and completing his community service project of refurbishing a memorial to John F. Kennedy in Eisenhower Park. To earn this ranking, Clay had to progress through each Boy Scout ranking, earn 21 merit badges, serve six months as a troop leader, participate in a Scoutmaster conference,

complete an Eagle Scout board review and plan, develop, and provide leadership to a service project for a religious organization, school or community. The district congratulates Clay for this tremendous honor and wishes him the best in his future endeavors.

During an assembly at Shore Road School in Bellmore, Nassau County Police officer Sharon Galvin addressed sixthgrade students about the perils of cyberbullying and the importance of Internet safety. She encouraged the students to be “upstanders,” or people who make a difference in

the world. She cautioned the students on having too many followers on social media and warned that Snap Chat and Instagram, like all social media, can be traced by police officials. “This is no joke,” Officer Galvin told the students. “Technology comes with a big responsibility, and nothing is private on the

Internet.” Officer Galvin also gave suggestions on how to handle a threatening or harassing message online. She encouraged the students to tell the perpetrator to “stop,” to block or un-follow that person and to tell a trusted adult about a problem they are having online.

New Logo Unveiled Art students were called upon recently to create a new logo for the ongoing “One Voice, One Message” initiative in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District. The winning logo, which includes the names of all six buildings, was voted on by student ambassadors at a recent meeting. The creation of seventh-graders

Mia Bader and Mia Bello, both Merrick Avenue Middle School students, was selected. The Ambassador Program is a districtwide, student-led think tank that was created in March of 2014 in response to the Dignity Act. These student ambassadors, who represent all four district high schools and

two middle schools, join together throughout the school year to address human relation issues that have impacted our community and society as a whole. They work closely with teachers and administrators to achieve districtwide goals under the “One Voice One Message” philosophy.

Levittown faculty from MacArthur High School and Salk Middle School participated in a series of Sumo wrestling matches to benefit the John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Under the direction of coach Michael Marrero, the participants donned immense Sumo wrestling gear to the delight of a packed crowd in the MacArthur High School gymnasium and wrestled their way to a $1,750 donation for sick and underprivileged children. The event coincided with the MacArthur High School wrestling team’s Senior Night. “I am happy to see that so many people came out for such a good cause,”

Coach Marrero said. “We hope that the Senior Night Sumo Showdown will be an annual event that will continue to benefit the John Theissen Children’s Foundation. This was a good day for our community.” The Sumo match participants were Salk Middle School Principal John Zampaglione versus MacArthur High School Principal Joe Sheehan; Salk teachers Bill Kind versus Caroline Kind; Coaches Brian Luball versus Chris Weggeland, MacArthur High School teachers David Levy versus Chris Bergersen; assistant principals Patrick Mulligan versus Michael Scaduto; and MacArthur

Winning Model High School teacher Chris Leahy versus Dean Steve Fazzolari. MacArthur High School graduate, former New York State wrestling champion and Ultimate Fighting Championship wrestler Gian Villante, was the guest referee. After the Sumo wrestling matches, the MacArthur High School wrestling team took to the mat and dominated the Westbury Dragons in their last league match before the post season. The graduating seniors honored during Senior Night were John Bachas, Travis Cooksey, Sal Deluca, Nick Goodelman, Jeremy Hughes, Vincent Thron and Noah Weisberg.

Anthony Piergiovanni, an eighth-grade student at Wantagh Middle School, was the firstplace, proverbial $100,000 winner of the business department’s biannual Shark Tank Challenge for his project “Ant’s Sports Store.” The business would help mold sports players and to encourage children and teens to fulfill their desires. Grace Conway and Claire Yustat were the second-place, $75,000 winners for their company called “We Can Workshop,” and Jacob Chan was the third-place, $50,000 winner for his company named “Love to Learn.” Under the direction of business management teacher Nancy O’Connor, students enrolled in the

eighth-grade business management course were required to participate in a final project called “My Business Idea!” The students worked as sole proprietors or formed a partnership, corporation or non-profit organization with fellow classmates. The individual teams determined the business idea, name, logo and slogan, and startup costs and funding were researched. The students also created a website and completed a SWOT analysis to determine the company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and defined their target market and competition. During the Entrepreneurial Challenge

on January 22nd, also called the Shark Tank Challenge, students delivered a PowerPoint presentation detailing their companies to a panel of judges from local businesses. Included in their presentations were business cards, the description of a grandopening event and links to a charity organization. “These Shark Tank Challenge projects have brought a significant amount of innovation and enthusiasm to the business management class,” Ms. O’Connor said. “The students not only gained knowledge about the free enterprise system, they learned they can own their own business as long as they are willing to work hard and passionately.”

and high school and middle school teachers Violet Turner and Franco Zagari will present their workshop titled “Limitless Language: Creative Multilingual and Symbolic Writing.” The annual LILAC/ NTC Conference offers workshops that span all grade levels and a variety of helpful and useful topics and teaching strategies. Being invited to present a workshop

is a prestigious honor. During the conference, scholar and researcher Tim Shanahan and awardwinning children’s and young adult author Andrea Davis Pinkney will deliver keynote addresses. In addition to presenting their workshops, the Wantagh teachers will enjoy collaborating and sharing their ideas with colleagues from across Long Island.

Tops in Geography Salk Middle School eighth-grader Aiden Schwartz was the winner of the school-level National Geography Bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Jacob Valasquez and William Valinatti were second- and third-place winners, respectively. Students were selected to compete in the Geography Bee based on their scores on a 35-question, multiple-

choice test administered to the entire school. Finalists then had 15 seconds to answer questions in front of their peers about states, continents, national parks and world cities, which were administered by social studies teachers Samantha McKevitt and Eric Rubin. The Geography Bee resulted in a final round between Aiden and Jacob

Aiden then took a test online consisting of 70 multiplechoice questions to qualify for the New York State level competition held in Albany this spring. Petition for a Song At the heart of the Bellmore School District’s character development program are core values and leadership principals that assist students in developing life skills. These leadership principals were well noted by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Famularo, who received a petition from

eight Winthrop Avenue students to bring his guitar to the school and sing “Apples and Bananas” during lunchtime in the cafeteria. Dr. Famularo sings to every class at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center, and the students wanted to continue this tradition at Winthrop Avenue School.

Will Cona, Zach Greenseid and Sam Kalish in Elisa Braverman’s third-grade class started the petition and Valentino DeLuna, Alex Freidman, Jack LaGalia and Alessandro Walaitis pitched in to acquire 130 signatures over a period of six days. The petition was sent to the superintendent’s office

with an accompanying letter detailing the process. “We asked a lot of people in the cafeteria, at recess, in class and so on,” Sam, Zach and Will’s letter stated. “We had a blast asking people, and when we got 130 people, we got

very excited.” Dr. Famularo said he was impressed by the students’ initiative to form a petition. “It shows real leadership skills and initiative, core values that we teach our students,” Dr. Famularo said.

The result was a performance of the “Apples and Bananas” song during the students’ lunch period as the staff and students accompanied Dr. Famularo in singing this district favorite.

DECA to Advance The Division Avenue High School chapter of DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) Chapter, advised by Frances Crusco, participated in the Nassau County Regional Competition at Freeport High School in January. Of the 25 studentmembers in ninth-12th grade who entered the business competition, eight students won top placements, advancing them to the New York State Conference in Rochester in

March. DECA is an extracurricular activity that helps to prepare future leaders and entrepreneurs through role-play competitions in business themed areas. Bhavi Kadakia, Ian Kavanaugh, James Lunetta, Anthony Richard, Brandon Smith, Matt Sochinsky, Anna Yoo and Jamal Zafar qualified for advancement to the state conference. Alex Montoya, Alex Lunetta, Cassandra McKee,

Amanda Jakubiak, Andrea Garthwaite and Jessica Vasseghi will compete in categories that begin on the state level. Based on their performances at the regional conference, Srikar Indrakanti, Charlie Mauro, Kayla Olivieri, Shannon Pousson, Nick Weinert and Sean Wolf will also accompany the team to Rochester.
