As we begin this second month of 2017, let us take stock of the year so far… Mother Nature has been relatively kind, sparing us the worst of winter’s wrath and limiting the hazardous weather to one shovel-worthy pileup of the white stuff. Of course, history has shown February to be among the snowiest here on Long Island, so be forewarned. No matter what that little furry critter says tomorrow, we still have several weeks to go before we can start looking for crocuses. Me, I just purchased three new books and am actually looking forward to some cozy, inclement weather to settle in and start reading. The beginning of the year may not be great for outdoor activities - although, it should be noted,

some of the most exquisite sunrises and sunsets tend to grace our skies during these month - but there are plenty of indoor hobbies to embrace, from movies to bowling to planetarium shows and more. Speaking of pastimes, I was pleasantly surprised to receive quite a bit of feedback to last week’s column on the closing of my yoga studio, with many offering their recommendations for alternative locations and similarly touting the benefits of this spiritual practice. Thank you to all who wrote in – it is certainly nice to know that there is an entire community of fellow “yogis” out there, and that many of you read my column weekly! In line with that feedback, it also occurred to me that I never did share the arrival of a new little finned friend,

“Spud,” who I adopted back at the end of November. While no pet will ever come close to replacing my Buddy and our very special relationship, Spud is certainly an entertaining little fellow with a personality all his own. Just a mere baby betta when I took him in, he is slowly growing into a beautiful boy with spikey blue fins and a penchant for darting to and fro and “playing” with his reflection. Spud’s swimming skills can use a little work, and I’m still crushing his food pellets into tiny, more manageable crumbs for his delicate system; but, overall, he seems to be adjusting to his new home quite nicely. And with that, we head into February, hoping that each passing month brings with it a little more sunshine into our lives.

Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all of their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 16th annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women. For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease & stroke. An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by cardiovascular diseases. Glaucoma Awareness Month January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, an important time to spread the word about the importance of taking care of your eyes. The risk for vision loss and related complications increases with age. Some type of sight-threatening eye problem affects 1 in 6 adults 45 and older and Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, according to the World Health Organization. Protecting your eyesight is vital to maintaining your overall quality of life and preventing the onset of glaucoma. AgeWell New York encourages members to make their eyes a priority by following these few tips: Know your risk. Conditions like diabetes, hypertension, nearsightedness, farsightedness, eye injury, or eye tumor, place you in a high risk. Be aware of your family history and get yourself screened regularly. Early onset of cataracts or glaucoma can be hereditary and early

detection is key. Regular eye exams. Adults 40- 65 should have their vision checked every one to two years; after 65, at least once a year. Comprehensive dilated eye exams detect problems early, when they’re easier to treat. An eye exam also ensures your eyeglasses or contact lenses prescription is up to date. Look for changes in your vision. Be cognoscente of noticeable changes such as double vision, hazy vision, difficulty seeing in low light conditions, red eyes, frequent flashes of light or eye pain and swelling. Speak with your doctor immediately about these changes. Exercise. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, regular exercise - such as walking can reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration by up to 70%. Be cautious of heavy lifting or bending activities, especially if you have a chronic illness or disability. Protect your eyes from harmful UV light. Always

wear sunglasses or a brimmed hat that shields your eyes from the sun. This may help reduce your risk of cataracts and other eye problems. Maintain a healthy diet. Studies have shown that antioxidants can possibly reduce the risk of cataracts. Load up on fruits, vegetables and omega-3. Dark green, yellow, and orange fruits and vegetables contain carotenoids, which may defend against several medical conditions, including glaucoma. Speak with your doctor about supplementing with eye vitamins to ensure you are getting adequate amounts of nutrients to keep your eyes healthy. In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, two Chatterton School classes in the Merrick Union Free School District volunteered their time to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the food pantry at Bethel AME Church in Freeport on January 13th. Prior to their day of service, the students in Dr. Cinnamon Green’s and Mrs. Angela Kremberg’s classes read biographies of Dr. King that recounted his life and his journey as a civil rights activist in pursuit of

a world where everyone is treated fairly. The classes were inspired by Dr. King’s well-known quote, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” As a way to carry on Dr. King’s legacy, the students employed their culinary skills to make 119 sandwiches for community residents in need. Wearing hairnets and plastic gloves, they prepared the sandwiches and packaged them for the local food pantry. “By studying Dr. King’s

message and participating in this act of service, the students are learning that helping others is a rewarding experience and should happen throughout the year,” said Mrs. Kremberg. Both classes said they felt honored to give back and help others. Dr. Green and Mrs. Kremberg thanked all the parents who donated loaves of bread, jars of peanut and jelly, and zip-close bags to help students experience a day of service and giving.

Campo Salisbury Center, where Campbell performed songs containing powerful stories. The singer/ guitarist also visited all of

the district’s elementary schools over the course of the week to share positive messages with the students. “Music has the ability to transcend words,” said Campbell, who visits schools across the country on national tours. “I want my music to leave an impact on kids and get them to think about how they’re treating one another, what they’re going after in life and how to work together.” Campbell kicked off the show with “Life Is Good,” an original song about focus. “As students grow

up and go through life, honing in on the power of focus is huge,” he said. Among other tunes were “Change the World,” about looking out for others, and “Life I Haven’t Lived Yet,” conveying the importance of hard work and believing in oneself. The audience was entertained by these and many other songs, often clapping along or echoing the lyrics. Campbell discussed every song that he presented and encouraged attendees to think about the ways these messages could be applied to their own lives.

Making the Dream Work Woodland Middle School students in the East Meadow School District participated in a variety of team building activities on January 13th. The Social Emotional Learning Club held a game-themed Mix It Up Day for sixth- and seventhgraders during their lunch periods to meet new people, develop their social skills and work in teams. During their homeroom

period, the students received different colored bracelets that grouped them with new peers. Together, they took part in activities inspired by board games such as Apples to Apples, Uno, Scrabble and Monopoly. Across the hall, eighthgraders practiced their team building skills with exercises and gaming applications. Working collaboratively to

accomplish a common goal, they participated in exercises such as human rock, paper, scissors and land mine travel, where teams had to direct their classmates across a field of “land mines” without stepping on a mine or bumping into another competitor. The students also teamed up to play the puzzle game Candy Crush.

Kindergarten and third-grade students at the John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District recently worked together on an activity that combined literacy and engineering. For the Just Right Challenge, kindergartners from Maryann Doherty’s class heard the wellknown children’s story,

“Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” They then split into groups and worked with third-graders from the Alpha program, under the direction of teacher Gayle Angert, to create “just right” beds for Goldilocks. Before meeting with the kindergartners, thirdgraders sketched their ideas in their engineering design journals. Once together, the students were given a

Second-grade students at Bellmore’s Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center traveled back to the time of the dinosaurs during the annual concert for parents, faculty and peers. Under the direction of teacher Randi Andersen, the students performed four pieces that reflected the theme “Dinosaurs,”

including “Roll Back the Rocks,” “Tyrannosaurus Rex,” “Stegosaurus,” and the popular hit “Everyone Wants a Dinosaur.” Between each number, select students presented facts about these prehistoric creatures. Principal Patricia Castine complemented the second-graders on their

performance and noted that their hard work and commitment to practice during recess twice a week since September exemplified the district’s core value of dedication. “It takes a lot of hard work and teamwork to put on a successful show,” Ms. Castine said.

Ms. Emmer explained that through these techniques, her young artists learned about layering and perspective, as they had to create a background, middle ground and foreground. She also incorporated technology into her lesson by using the SmartBoard to project images of desert scenes, so that students could get a visual feel for a biome that they typically don’t experience on Long Island. Fifth-graders built on

the skills they had learned a year earlier by creating landscapes that paid homage to French artist Henri Rousseau. Similar to the fourth-graders, each student began by painting a watercolor background and making plants and other vegetation out of construction paper. The young artists then drew pictures of animals, real or imaginary, and combined all of the elements to create unique collages.

It’s a colorful time of year at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District, as students have been working on a variety of vibrant projects under the direction of art teacher Jill Emmer. Fourth-graders have been creating desert landscapes. They started by using watercolor paints to create sunset sky backgrounds. Calhoun walked away with the runners-up plaque; something the Calhoun girls haven’t done in more than two decades. “The girls represented their school, coaches and alumni with honor and proved to Nassau County that they are a program to be reckoned with,” Migliano added.

Sanford H. Calhoun High School’s girls track and field in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District recently competed and placed in the Conference Championships at Saint Anthony’s High School in Huntington. Led by captains Cristin Rodriguez, Katie Goodman and Christina Garbarino, the girls started off slow as East Meadow dominated all the distance events, but then the sprints and field events began and this was Calhoun’s time to shine. Rodriguez not only won the 55m hurdles, but also claimed her second conference title in the high jump; setting her personal best of 5 feet, the number two mark in all of Nassau County, explained coach Joseph Migliano.

Learning through Skype After reading the novel “Because of Mr. Terupt,” fifth-grade students in Tiffany Antonucci’s class at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District were able to chat with the author, Rob Buyea. Although they weren’t able to meet face-toface, technology still allowed the students to get an authentic learning experience. The class held a videoconference with Buyea using Skype. The students all prepared

questions for the author, who appeared on the SmartBoard, and they interacted during a question and answer session. The novel is about a year in the life of a fifthgrade class at Snow Hill School, told through the eyes of seven students. Ms. Antonucci’s students used the book to learn about character traits, plot structure, point of view, character change and theme. “Each student, as well

as myself, fell in love with this novel and we also felt truly connected to the characters and story line,” Ms. Antonucci said. “They thoroughly enjoyed the information Mr. Buyea shared with us as a writer. He left us with some powerful food for thought: ‘You must read, read, read, because all great writers are good readers and all good readers are great writers.’ It’s what we adopted as words to live by in our class this year.”

Making Paper A typical student uses a lot of paper in school, but probably doesn’t think too much about where it came from. Sixth-graders at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District found out, as they made their own recycled paper during a recent science project. Led by teacher Amanda

DiMonda, the students began by shredding old newspapers. They combined the paper with boiled water and cornstarch, mixed the items together, spread it out on aluminum foil and flattened it. The new paper was left to dry overnight and was ready for students to use the next day.

The students have been studying earth science and learning about the global climate change. Ms. DiMonda said the purpose of the recycling project was to show students how they can make a more positive impact on the environment.

The Distinguished Young Women of New York Scholarship Program is now accepting applications for its college scholarship program, open to current high school junior women in the state of New York who are graduating by June 2018. The state program will be held at Cohoes High School on Saturday, July 29th, 2017. Founded in 1958

Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino has announced the 2017 schedule for the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program. The town’s corps of VITA volunteers is ready to provide senior citizens and residents with limited income with free income tax return filing services. Sponsored by the Town of Hempstead’s Department of Senior Enrichment under the auspices of the Internal Revenue Service, VITA tax preparers are trained in the latest changes in the tax laws and assigned to local libraries and senior centers throughout the ten-week filing period. “For more than 40 years, Hempstead’s VITA volunteers have provided an invaluable service to our

residents, helping them to obtain the maximum allowable refund,” stated Santino. “Our dedicated VITA volunteers will be assigned to one of the town’s 18 sites, beginning February 6th through April 17th.” Participants must bring last year’s tax return (2015), all wage, Social Security and earning statements (W-2 and 1099, and 1095, if applicable), all interest, dividend, capital gains, IRAs, annuities and pension statements, 2016 property tax receipts, STAR exemption records, itemized expense records, social security cards and photo identification of all those filing tax returns. Most VITA sites require that an appointment is made in advance. Many of the VITA locations are

equipped to electronically file tax returns. Honor Society Inductees Wantagh High School’s National Honor Society inducted 107 new members during a traditional candlelighting ceremony, held in the auditorium on January 18th. The evening featured words of wisdom from administrators and staff, musical interludes by the high school’s string chamber ensemble and the singing of the national anthem by Alexa Sgroi. Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg noted that the inductees have made choices and sacrifices to reach this pinnacle of success, and challenged the students to continue on this path of achievement. “The challenge is not to rest on your laurels, but to strive to achieve loftier goals,”

she said. Principal Carolyn Breivogel congratulated the students for having achieved this honor and noted that they have demonstrated honor, as well as the instinct to choose between action and inaction. “It’s the small things you do every day that signifies your character,” she said. Keynote speaker Gina Federico spoke about how volunteering empowers volunteers to discover new horizons. “Step outside your comfort zone and continue to learn about your world, others and yourself,” she said. NHS co-presidents Benjamin Steinberg and Christina Weir congratulated the inductees and offered words of advice. “Take this milestone and make it a part of you,” Benjamin said. Christina also advised the inductees to “never place a limit on your dreams.”

Shelter Support items for the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. The club is seeking food, treats, blankets, beds and toys, as well as baby bottles to feed newborn kittens. “This is important because it gives dogs and cats something nice while they wait to be adopted,” said sixth-grader Nicholas Saunders. the pet supply drive by creating posters to hang throughout the school, making announcements and encouraging their classmates to donate. Faculty Variety Show On Friday, February 3rd, the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District will host its first district faculty variety show, “The Faculty Follies.” This fundraising event will help raise money for the new Community Cupboard. The evening will feature live performances by a wide range of staff members representing each of the

six schools as well as central administration. Students from the district’s Ambassador Program will serve as the emcees for the show. “This is another example of students and faculty coming together in the spirit of One Voice, One Message,” said Cheryl Fontana, director of the fine & performing arts. “The Student Ambassadors have done tremendous work

building the Community Cupboard. This night of entertainment is the faculty’s way of helping to support their initiative.” The show will be held at 7 p.m. in the Wellington C. Hitting Coach Visits Major League Texas Rangers hitting coach Anthony Iapoce recently spent time with Division Avenue High School players on the baseball team. Head coach Tom Tuttle and his staff for the annual winter clinic, hosted by Levittown West Little League, invited Iapoce. Iapoce discussed the

mental approach to hitting, as well as his experience working with professional players. The student-players then practiced various drills including hitting, fielding and pitching. Coach Tuttle noted that Iapoce’s visit had a major impact on the players, who gained insight into the mental aspect of hitting

and key points on how to reach their potential as players. “It’s not often you can get a Major League hitting coach to visit a clinic during his off season,” Tuttle said. “The Blue Dragon family, along with Levittown West Little League, can’t thank him enough for the great experience it gave our players.”

Winning Business Model Daniel Johnson and Justin Treiland, eighthgrade students at Wantagh Middle School, were the first place, proverbial $100,000 platinum winners of the business department’s Shark Tank Challenge for their project “Sports Imports.” The business would provide customers with a variety of sports jerseys and other paraphernalia at discounted prices. Madison Crandall and Julia Deedy were the second place, $75,000 gold winners for their business “Bake It,” and Emma Leavey and Gabriella Nogara were the third place, $50,000 silver winners for their business “Zippy.” Under the direction of Nancy O’Connor, students enrolled in the

eighth-grade business management course were required to participate in a final project called “My Business Idea!” The students worked as sole proprietors or formed a partnership, corporation or nonprofit organization with fellow classmates. The individual teams determined the business idea, name, logo and slogan, and startup costs and funding were researched. The students also created a website and completed a SWOT analysis to determine the company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and defined their target market and competition. During the Entrepreneurial Challenge on January 20th, also called

the Shark Tank Challenge, students delivered a PowerPoint presentation detailing their companies to a panel of judges from local businesses. Included in their presentations were business cards, the description of a grandopening event and links to a charity organization. “These Shark Tank Challenge projects have brought a significant amount of innovation and enthusiasm to the business management class,” Ms. O’Connor said. “The students not only gained knowledge about the free enterprise system, they learned they can own their own business as long as they are willing to work hard and passionately.”

On January 13th, Wellington C. Mepham High School students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District joined other budding entrepreneurs from throughout the island to compete for the top spot at Long Island’s Regional Business Plan Competition, sponsored by HSBC. Teams representing

56 virtual enterprise companies from 42 high schools in both Nassau and Suffolk counties had their written business plans and oral presentations judged by industry professionals and educators at Farmingdale State College. Mepham’s TruViewVR earned first-place honors for Most Enthusiastic Booth and Best Catalog at this year’s competitions.

Parent University As part of its mission to include parents in the learning process, the North Bellmore School District hosted a Parent University program, “The Parent’s Guide to Writer’s Workshop,” at Park Avenue Elementary School on January 19th. Writer’s Workshop, through Schoolwide Inc.’s units of study, is a new initiative in the district that offers more personalized instruction through the use of writing conferences, mentor texts and leveled libraries. It focuses on narrative, informational and opinion writing, allowing students to become independent

writers through the selfselection of topics. The Parent University program was led by Tillie McNamara, director of educational programs and staff development, and instructional coaches Amanda Licci, Cindy Quinn and Krista Zucker. They discussed the type of writing instruction that children receive, the materials that are used, the editing and revision process and strategies and resources for parents to use at home.
