Peacocks & Pretty Things Beauty. They say it is in the eye of the beholder; but truly, it exists all around us, if we take the time to notice. My love of photography has certainly enhanced my ability to appreciate the aesthetics of my surroundings, from interesting cloud formations while waiting for sunsets, to pretty roadside blossoms that would otherwise be characterized as weeds to the undiscerning eye, to the novelty of light and shadow as it plays out upon a surface. Such is the abstract nature of visual “art.” And then there are the moments when it appears before you in its most natural, stunningly striking form. Case in point: several weeks ago, my friend and I enjoyed a late lunch at the famed Milleridge Inn, having both decided that it was the perfect locale after having not dined there in quite some time. To our surprise, the holiday lights were still on full display, with remnants of the Christmas season in every corner of the restaurant and shops. Having just finished dismantling my own decorations the previous week, I was at once
nostalgic and slightly weary of them. As we exited the bakery and made our way to the official Christmas shop located on the property, I spotted what appeared to be a large bird sitting on the railing of the ice cream parlor. “Is that real?” I whispered to my friend, “Or just a decoration?” We stared intently, only to be instantly startled. “It moved! Oh my gosh, it moved!” As we tentatively approached, we realized it was a GIANT peacock. And with that, no less than half a dozen others peered out from behind various corners and crevices, along with several chickens and peahens. Unfazed by the humans before them, they moseyed to and fro, pausing briefly to study us. Thoroughly infatuated, we wandered after them, attempting to snap pictures and even a few short videos of these majestic feathered creatures. As I knelt down and tentatively reached my hand out toward one especially beautiful specimen, my friend grabbed my phone to
capture the sight. The bird cocked his head slightly, examining me carefully, then strode purposefully toward me. Unsure if he was planning to sit on my lap or - more likely - to take a sizable bite out of me, I froze, backing away slightly. “Did you get the picture?” I nervously called to my friend. “Yes, I think I took about 27 of them,” she replied giggling. Alright then, no sense pushing my luck. I quickly stood up as the peacock stared at me, seemingly perplexed. “Sorry pretty bird, thanks for the photo op.” And with that, he fluttered his massive wings and took off, soaring to a nearby tree branch. By that point, a small crowd had gathered around us, amazed that this one bird had taken such an apparent liking to me. A little boy exclaimed to his parents, “Wow, they fly???” Peering up at the bird, now perched overhead, my friend and I looked at each other in utter amazement. “That,” I said, “was clearly the highlight of the day.” Beauty. It’s everywhere.

Sixty-six of General Douglas MacArthur High School’s top seniors were recognized during the school’s annual General’s Breakfast on January 10th. The Levittown Public School’s central administration along with board members, MacArthur administrators and guidance department were all present for the special event. Students included those that had a cumulative GPA ranging from a 95 to a 103.9. Seated at decorated blue and red tables, Principal Joseph Sheehan welcomed everyone to the breakfast. He praised the students for their academic accomplishments throughout their high school careers. “You have proven that hard work and dedication does pay off and you have represented MacArthur High School with the necessary characteristics that makes us all so very proud of you,” he said. “Thank you for all that you have done these past four years.” The students were then

Clarke High School in East Meadow on December 28th. Only 14 wrestlers in Long Island history have reached the 200-win record. On January 3rd, Loew placed second in the Eastern States Classic, held at Loch Sheldrake, New York, to round out his record of 31 wins and one loss for the

season. Jonathan started his career as a 99-pound seventh-grader, under coach Paul Gillespie. During his six seasons with the Warriors, he has acquired AllCounty designations in grades 8-11, an All-State designation in 11th-grade, as well as the title of All-American as a junior. Last season, Jonathan placed fourth in the National High School Coaches Association National Wrestling Championships in Virginia Beach in April, and also won the Journeyman Fall Classic. During the offseason,

Career Match he wrestles with his brothers and trains at Vougars’s Honors Wrestling in Syosset. His work has paid off, because at 195-pounds he is ranked nationally as a top 15 wrestler. So far, his overall record is 216 wins, 41 losses with 108 pins. Loew said. “It has been great being a part of a winning team throughout my career in Wantagh.” Jonathan will continue his wrestling career at Cornell University this fall where he will also study business.

Replicas of stained glass windows, representing the church where Martin Luther King, Jr. listened to the powerful messages of his father’s sermons in Atlanta, Georgia, were hung on Alexandra Grodin’s classroom windows at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore, reminding fourth-grade students that
leaders, like them, can make a difference in the world. The interdisciplinary art and social studies project was the result of a study on the civil rights movement and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s profound effect on racism. The students first read Doreen Rappaport’s “Martin’s Big Words: The

Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” After writing down inspirational quotes from the book to share with peers, the students crafted the stained glass windows to symbolize the difference the civil rights leader made in the world and in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 15th.
The Braves and Rams were welcomed into the Kennedy Cougar den on January 12th as John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District hosted the eighth-grade boys basketball game between Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools. The event, which served
as the official kickoff to welcome Kennedy’s incoming freshmen class, included performances by the cheerleading and kickline teams from both middle schools. “All future Cougars in attendance received Cougar Nation T-shirts and were treated to building tours provided by Kennedy student leaders,” explained

Attention Parents Parents who have a child/children residing in the Levittown School District and have attained the age of four years on or before December 1st, 2018 are invited to apply for admission, on behalf of their child, to the Universal Pre-Kindergarten Program during the 2018-2019 school year. ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal
and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!
“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” . . . this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry that reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. They operate a very impressive Food Outreach weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile manner because the Gospel
tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. Sean Bellia, Thomas McDonald and Jason Von Holten, eighth-grade students at Wantagh Middle School, were the proverbial $100,000 platinum winners of the business department’s Shark Tank Challenge for their project “JTS Prosthetics.” Their business would sell prosthetic limbs. Timmy Burke and Tommy Campisi were the second-place, $75,000 gold winners for their business “Chromium,” which would sell football equipment. Entrepreneur Hannah McCormick’s cosmetic company, “Light It Up,” was the third-place, $50,000 winner. Teacher Nancy O’Connor explained that
students enrolled in the eighth-grade business management course were required to participate in a final project called “My Business Idea!” The students worked as sole proprietors or formed a partnership, corporation or nonprofit organization with fellow classmates. The individual teams determined the business idea, name, logo and slogan, and startup costs and funding were researched. After defining their target market and competition, they created a website and completed a SWOT analysis to determine the company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. During the January
22nd Entrepreneurial Challenge, called the Shark Tank Challenge, students delivered a PowerPoint presentation detailing their companies to a panel of judges from local businesses. Included in their presentations were business cards, a grandopening event description and links to a charity organization. “The Shark Tank Challenge has brought innovation and enthusiasm to the business management class,” Ms. O’Connor said. “The students gained knowledge about the free enterprise system and learned they can own their own business if they are willing to work hard and passionately.”

Serving Up Talents Family members, central office administrators and board of education trustees attended the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center’s annual Culinary Showcase at the Levittown Memorial Education Center on January 11th. The event allowed culinary students to demonstrate their skills while guests enjoyed a delicious meal. GC Tech Director Frank Creter and culinary teaching assistant Lillian Creedon welcomed everyone to the showcase and discussed what the evening is all about. “As we strive to teach them the ropes, we should
all remember that they are here to learn, have fun and get their feet wet as they explore the many facets of culinary, baking and restaurant services,” said Creedon. While the seniors prepared meals in the kitchen, junior culinary students circled the room and waited tables. Under the direction of Chef William Samboy, the seniors prepared a salad with homemade dressing, a meal of prime rib, baked potatoes and mixed vegetables, and cheesecake for dessert. Levittown’s GC Tech culinary arts program is a
two-year program in which students are instructed in the fundamentals of cooking, baking and wait staff/hospitality. Culinary menu planning, food science and health and safety procedures are major components of the program and students practice their skills daily in the school’s modern commercial kitchen and bakery. They also have the opportunity to earn college credits, internships and apprenticeships, as well as the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s five-year ServSafe certification.
Character Defined Using consumer brand packaging, Shore Road sixth-grade students in the Bellmore School District created a collage of words that define leadership through an art process called cerealism. The brightly-colored legacy artwork was the culminating project of a workshop held by pop
artist Michael Albert. Albert is known for his use of consumer brand packaging, such as cereal boxes, and various reusable materials to create unique collages with powerful messages. During the workshop, the students searched for words that define leadership from a variety of
recyclable cardboard boxes, including cereal boxes. The words were cut out and glued onto a canvas to create a leadership mosaic of leadership words. The legacy art will hang in the school’s hallway as a reminder for students to practice leadership principles.

Reinhard Early Childhood Center students exhibited leadership, teamwork, persistence and musical skill during separate annual winter concerts held on January 18th and 19th. Under the batons of orchestra director Kelly Brandstadter, vocal director Laura Laude and band director Jennifer Mac Vicar, student-musicians played and sang a variety of classical and popular tunes including Soon Hee Newbold’s “The Russian Music Box,” Imagine
Dragons “Believer” and Brian Balmages’ “Fanfare on a Theme of Imagination.” Reinhard secondgrade students took the audience on a “Musical Journey Through the Decades,” under the baton of choral director Randi Andersen. In addition to tunes stemming from the Ragtime era, various individual performances of music by Frank Sinatra, The Andrew Sisters, Spice Girls, Ella Fitzgerald, Chubby Checker and more entertained and excited audiences with renditions of celebrities from gone-by
eras and today. Reinhard Principal Patricia Castine said, “This concert is an opportunity for students to take a leadership role through narration and solo performance roles. It takes an enormous amount of dedication and persistence to prepare for a concert performance.” Shore Road School Principal Patrice Matthews also thanked the board of education and central administration for their support of the music program as well as parents for sharing their students’ enthusiasm for music.
Putting Skills to Use Sixth-graders at Chatterton School in Merrick have been using their extra recess time to fine-tune their journalistic skills and pen a series of articles for Newsday’s Kidsday section. Twenty-five students who worked together in the school’s lunchtime Writing Club have been writing about local places to eat, things to do around Long Island for kids, product reviews, their own personal cool collections and much more. During the week of March 3rd-
9th, everyone will be able to enjoy their work as Kidsday will publish their articles all week long. The group recently interviewed Harley Bird, the 16-year old girl who is the voice of Peppa Pig on the popular Nick Jr. animated series. In December, Writing Club members Sarah Iuzzolino, Hannah Lewis, Donovan Matthews and Isabella Vieni were selected to attend a meet and greet and interview Bird in Manhattan. The article was published in the December
30th, 2017, edition of Kidsday. According to club advisers Debbie Cain and Derrick Horodyski, upon hearing they were chosen, the four students were very excited and quickly went to work developing interview questions for her. “The students’ questions were thoughtful and fun, and Harley Bird was extremely kind during the interview,” Cain said. “Overall it was a wonderful experience, one they will never forget!”

Senior Standouts Amy Rzemieniewski and Dylan Chase from Division Avenue High School and Deanna Barbara and Gerald Fiorenza III from General Douglas MacArthur High School were recently recognized as Outstanding Physical Education students at the Nassau Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance’s High School Outstanding Student Awards Dinner. The students were honored due to their leadership, citizenship and outstanding achievement in physical education. Each year, Nassau Zone honors
one graduating male and female from high schools across Nassau County who meet the required Physical Education Outstanding Student criteria for achievement. All four students were awarded with a medallion and certificate for their accomplishment. In addition to being star students, all four are highly involved in their school community. At MacArthur High School, Barbara is on the girls varsity softball team and girls swim team. She is also a Girl Scout, part of the school’s Recycling Club, Key Club and Big Sister
The families of the Levy Lakeside School community recently stepped up for an important cause. In conjunction with Student Council, Lakeside collected 350 toys donated by families and community members through the school’s Toys for Tots drive. The Student Council
Crew was amazed at all the toys they were able to bag and pass on to the local chapter of Kiwanis to help local families who are less fortunate. “This alone made us very grateful that we could do something that made such a difference in the lives of our neighbors,” said Jack,
a member of the Lakeside Student Council Crew. “We were honored to know that we could take away some parents’ worries and help put a smile on their faces. We hope everyone had a great holiday season and we wish all the Merrick families a happy and healthy 2018!”

Key Club members at General Douglas MacArthur High School recently raised more than $1,800 for breast cancer awareness and research through fundraising efforts with the American Cancer Society’s Mobile Fundraising App. The club members shared the
app link to family and friends over the course of approximately two months and accepted cash donations. The club also participated in the Jones Beach Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in October. Due to their fundraising efforts, the American
Cancer Society awarded the Key Club with a banner which will be displayed in the high school. “I was so surprised and excited,” said Key Club adviser Ayla Demirayak. “It was great that the kids get to see their hard work pay off and get recognized.”
Valentines for Veterans Students from Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District recently contributed to the Town of Hempstead’s Valentines for Veterans program. Children from kindergarten through sixth grade made personalized cards for troops overseas. Saw Mill students
combined to create more than 750 cards, which were handed to Town Supervisor Laura Gillen upon her visit to the school on January 19th. The cards featured drawings and heartfelt messages. “Our students enjoy doing things for others,” said Assistant Principal Danica Brugge. “This

Celebrating Dr. King Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s contributions to the civil rights movement were the subject of several reading and writing assignments at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. Kindergartners drew pictures and wrote responses based on Dr. King’s quote, “Love is the key to the problems of the world.” The children were asked to think of ways they could spread love. After reading “Martin’s Big Words,” first-graders
wrote “I Have a Dream” pieces about the ways in which Dr. King changed the world. They also drew pictures based on words associated with him, such as freedom, kindness and truth. Teacher Judith Ciccone took Tootsie Roll pops and changed the wrappers so when students opened one, it was a different flavor. This was to teach them that it’s more important to judge someone by what’s on the inside. In fourth-grade classes, students watched a Brain
Pop Jr. video about Dr. King and analyzed a reading passage using the RAFT method - Restate, Answer the question, For example and Tie it up. They had to determine the main idea of each paragraph. Teacher Jeanne Patterson said the project connected social studies with literacy, as students took a current topic and used it to improve their reading and writing skills. Sixth-graders wrote acrostic poems from the word “dream.”

Budding Scientists Abbey Lane Elementary School second-graders explored the world of science with the help of presenters from Mad Science of Long Island and their hour-long program “Matter of Fact” on January 17th and 18th. Presenters Proton Pete (Peter Siklodi) and Professor Soda Pop (John J. Clements) visited each second-grade classroom
to transform the students into scientists. The students learned about the states of matter, molecules and the difference between physical and chemical changes. Through handson experiments, the students built their own molecules, created a “volcano” with baking soda, watched a nickel transform into copper using a battery and created
their own “Mad Science Goo” to take home. Mad Science provided goggles for the students as they took turns contributing to each task and watching their experiments transform. At the conclusion of the program, each student was awarded with a certificate from Mad Science for completing the “Matter of Fact” program.

Souper Way to Help With the biggest football game of the year on the horizon, students at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District are using the opportunity to help others. The Student Council organized a “Souper Bowl,” which runs through February 2nd. Fourth-graders at Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District became immersed in a mystery story experience lead by Submerge Storytelling. According to its website, Submerge Storytelling is an educational program that transforms a classroom into the setting of a story, motivating students to draw conclusions about the characters, plot and themes. Using a twin-sized bed, desks, Legos, wall decorations and sports memorabilia, Parkway’s Literacy Center was transformed into the bedroom of 12-year-old named Trevor Cool, who breaks codes for the CIA. The students examined evidence and applied their literacy and critical thinking skills to become detectives in
