discuss the importance and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s teachings. Each Bellmore student was asked to select and decorate a word they felt expressed Dr. King’s ideas and beliefs. Students shared their words and

On January 15th, under the direction of Randi Andersen, the secondgraders in the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center Rising Star Chorus held their annual winter concert. The theme for this year’s concert was “A Better You, A Better Me!” wherein the

children performed songs that exemplified Reinhard’s Core Values of friendship and the importance of having good character and a positive attitude. Before each song, groups of students introduced the various features of the song and how it related to the core values.

The groom’s mother, Jeannette Novack and bride’s grandmother, Irene Ambrosino, were also present to celebrate the event. The bride wore a white strapless Sincerity mermaid gown. She carried a bouquet of white calla lilies and yellow daisies. Patricia Duffy Elliott of Seaford, a friend for over

25 years, was her maid of honor. Townley Cozad of Fairfax, VA, Kathie Mullin of Sag Harbor, Laura Scurro of Commack, Kath Duffy of Chicago, IL, Joanne Kane and Laura Thimm of Hampton Bays were bridesmaids. They wore navy blue Sangria boutique gowns. Bruce Mueller of East Islip, a friend since birth, was the best man. The groomsmen were Jimmy Red Colbert of Sag Harbor, Irish Chris Maxwell of Montauk and the bride’s brother, Sam Mastandrea of Brooklyn. The couple met in March of 2011 at the World Pie restaurant in Bridgehampton. They spent their honeymoon in Aruba and have plans to stay put living in beautiful Sag Harbor and Montauk.

Recognized For Values Levittown sophomores Douglas Melgar from Division Avenue High School and Carissa Giuliano from MacArthur High School were selected as the 2014-2015 winners of the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership award. MacArthur High School

sophomore Teresa Neri was selected as an alternate. Through a rigorous selection process comprised of a nomination, essay and interview, Douglas and Carissa demonstrated the embodiment of core HOBY values, including volunteerism, integrity,

excellence, diversity and community partnership. HOBY programs allow students selected by their school to participate in unique leadership training, service learning and motivation-building experiences.

Celebrating Reading Summit Lane students in the Levittown School District were entertained by characters Flip, Muzz, Sniffie and Crunch during an author visit by Angelo DeCesare, who read his book “Flip’s Fantastic Journal.” During his presentation, DeCesare encouraged the students to write about things that are familiar

and to draw from their imaginations. He even showed the students how to draw the characters in his book. DeCesare’s visit was one of several activities during the school’s Parents as Reading Partners celebration, an annual event that encourages parents to read to their children each day. During

the week, members of the Levittown community and staff read to the students, and Kohl’s Store Associates in Action paid the students a visit and read their favorite books. Alan, a student musician who is a lyrical drummer, has made a powerful impact on music education in Nassau County, will be honored at the awards gala held in March by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation. The Foundation is an independent non-profit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget. When Alan Culbreath graduates from the Rosemary Kennedy School this year, he leaves behind a legacy of accomplishment that will have a profound influence on music teacher education programs throughout Nassau County schools for generations to come. In 2005, Alan was a

guest performer at the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education professional development workshop, “Teaching Music to Students with Autism and Developmental Disabilities.” His performance was a historic achievement that highlighted for educators the strengths and capabilities of special education students. In 2008, Alan participated in the New York State School Music Association’s standardsbased DVD project, “Music Views Across the State.” The DVD was widely circulated throughout Nassau County schools and is currently used in teacher education programs. Alan’s performance is a tremendous inspiration for instrumental teachers who have inclusion students in their school music programs. In 2013, Alan accompanied on drums an age-level peer for her College Senior Graduate

Student Honored Clarinet Recital at Log Island University. Senior Named Finalist

Samuel Epstein, a senior at John F. Kennedy High School, in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District, was named a finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search. Epstein was one of only 40 students out of 300 across the United States including Puerto Rico and five American high schools overseas to be chosen as a finalist. He joins only four other Long Island students with this designation. “This is incredible news!” said John DeTommaso, superintendent of the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD. “Every day I continue to be impressed by the dedication, hard work and accomplishments of our student-body and staff in Bellmore-Merrick and today is no exception.
