Animal Shelter. After a visit to the shelter located on Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh, John decided to hold a drive to collect
needed items for the animals who reside there. During a two-week period, he managed to collect $600 in cash, as well as
beds, toys, treats and other needed items on a list provided by employees. “When I walked through the hallway at the shelter, it brought me to tears that so many animals needed to be adopted,” he said. An avid animal lover, John said he plans to continue donating his time to the animal shelter and is looking forward to being able to work directly with the animals upon turning 18 years of age. In the meantime, John is working hard toward his goal of graduation and was named one of the high school’s 74 top seniors who attended the annual General’s Breakfast. John is most interested in business and computer science and is a member of the Business Honor Society. Members of the Levy Lakeside School Student Council in the Merrick School District held their annual toy drive to help less fortunate families in the community this
holiday season. Thanks to the generosity of the school community, more than 100 new, unwrapped toys were collected for children of all ages. The student

As part of a longstanding Levittown tradition, 74 top seniors from MacArthur High School’s Class of 2017 were invited to attend the annual General’s Breakfast. These academically talented seniors acquired a 95 percent GPA or above during their high school careers. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald and Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Todd Winch congratulated the honorees. Board of Education trustees, faculty and guidance counselors were also in attendance to celebrate the student’s four years of outstanding achievement. During his remarks, Principal Joseph Sheehan said, “As we look out over this impressive group of young adults, we can all agree that our future looks bright.”

During physical education classes, students at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District are reviewing topics in CPR, AED and first aid. Next year, the school will be re-certifying students since its good for two years. Under the guidance of the district’s athletic director, Eric Caballero, and in conjunction with the Robbie Levine Foundation, BellmoreMerrick’s physical education teachers have been designing and delivering lessons in CPR and AED to students in grades 7 through 12. Additionally, students at the high school level, received first aid training.

Finding Zen By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
I recently found out that my yoga studio, the one I have been frequenting for the last several years, will be closing come the end of February. Sure, there are other studios, other forms of meditation that can be explored; but this was my studio, the one I had come to regard as a sanctuary of sorts, a respite from the oftstressful daily grind. When I began taking classes there, some three or four years ago, my goal was to attend one, two – even three – sessions per week, at all different levels, in an effort to explore this newfound hobby. I had originally decided to look into the practice after
“retiring” from dancing for the previous 20 years, and determined that yoga would be the perfect combination of strength and conditioning, balance and relaxation, that I needed. Of course, my grand plans eventually dwindled down to about once a week, as I found a regular class that I loved. Every Wednesday (or as many as I could manage to make it to), I would look forward to those 75 minutes of guided technique and mental cleansing. Certainly, anyone can undertake the basic yoga stretches and breathing techniques on his/her own; but there is definitely something about a structured class which brings a whole new level to
the practice. And so, come March, I will need to find a new venue to attend, a new haven to explore this ancient ritual, which has so very many benefits in the modern world. How glad I am that I ventured into that particular studio all those years ago, and how very appreciative I am of the community of fellow “yogis” that I have come to know and respect. Here’s hoping that I find a new home for my hobby, one as welcoming and fulfilling and full of inspiration. ‘Til then, I shall savor these remaining weeks in my old familiar studio, surrounded by familiar faces; and I shall take a deep breath and appreciate all the goodness yoga has brought to my life.

Tech Day Held The fourth annual TechDay was held at Wantagh High School on January 7th, during which more than 120 district students in grades 5-12 expanded their knowledge of game design and programming, web development and mobile development. The goal of the event was to introduce and expand the students’ knowledge of computer science, a field expected to grow rapidly during the next decade. TechDay co-founder Peter Mountanos explained that the TechDay team is comprised of district alumni who assist students in understanding the basic notions of how computers work and how they can

They also utilized
Scratch and Python, the basics of coding, to make computer games. In addition, students learned Android development and built their own Android project by remaking the popular app. “Students who attended TechDay advanced their knowledge of existing and emerging computer technologies, making them better equipped for the future,” said Penny Curry, the district’s director of information systems and instructional technology.

Clara Song, a sophomore at East Meadow High School, has been selected as a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership ambassador. According to its website, HOBY, founded in 1958, is an organization that inspires and develops the global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. As an ambassador, Clara will participate with other teenagers at the HOBY Leadership Conference, where she will collaborate with recognized leaders in business, government, education and other
professions to discuss current world issues. Clara was selected through a rigorous process that included an interview by faculty, administration and a former HOBY ambassador. She unanimously impressed the panel with her poise, confidence and genuine concern for others. Clara is a very conscientious student who is involved in numerous extracurricular activities. She is a member of the school’s STEM, Pre-Med and Key clubs and an active member of the Science, Social Studies and English
honor societies. She also volunteers at WinthropUniversity Hospital and conducts her own research in the medical chemistry lab at St. John’s University. Last summer, Clara was fortunate enough to participate in a Global Health Initiative trip to the Dominican Republic, and she is currently planning a community service trip to Peru. With a passion for science and a desire to help others, Clara aspires to pursue a career in the medical field, specifically in global health.

Language Extravaganza In an attempt to assist Levittown sixth-graders in choosing a language to study, foreign language students from Division Avenue and MacArthur high schools held a World Language Extravaganza at Jonas E. Salk and Wisdom Lane middle schools. The high school students
prepared presentations about the advantages of studying a foreign language, the field trips available, and information about art, culture, jobs and careers available. Levittown Social Studies Director Steve Costello said the students are currently working with

their guidance counselors to choose a language for next school year. “The goal of the World Language Extravaganza is to get the students excited about taking a foreign language and to help them decide between taking French, Spanish or Italian next school year,” Costello said.

Buzzing with Words
We all deal with increases in expenses all the time. We recently learned that the minimum wage was increased to $10.00 per hour in our area, and it will continue to increase to up to $15.00 per hour by 2021. These types of increases are a result of decisions from our elected officials. On the surface, many people think this is good and fair; but when you delve deeper, you may find that it might not be so good after all. All businesses, including small businesses, must now figure out a way to deal with these increased costs. They now must decide how much of these costs their business can absorb and how much must now be passed on to the consumer. Many businesses are
still dealing with the large increases in their health care costs. Many businesses will be forced to eliminate positions, as well as minimize some of their services. Ultimately, it is the consumer who will be adversely affected by all of this. Let’s all hope for better days ahead! We have an opportunity with our new administration to cut the size of government and its excessive spending and waste. We have an opportunity to limit government control and waste in many areas such as healthcare, education, student loans and social service benefits. Able Americans should be in control of their own destinies, working and earning their own way in this world, and not
being enabled to rely on government handouts which ultimately become yet another cost to all of us hard working taxpayers. Government assistance is meant for those who are truly in need of and deserving of the help. These less fortunate Americans are the only ones who should be allowed to benefit from these costly government services. So, if you find yourself having to pay more for a product or service, or you seem to be waiting longer and longer for assistance in places of business or of government service, realize where this all started, and who is paying for all the wasteful government spending. It is US, THE TAXPAYERS.
The Wantagh High School Robotics Team earned both the Tournament Champion Award and the Robot Skills Champion Award during the “Men In Black” Vex Robotics Competition Qualifier on January 15th. Under the direction of John Walsh, the team was able to use their ingenuity, design, dedication and hard work to prevail over 16 other teams. In preparation for
competition, the students used their knowledge of engineering, science and mathematics to make modifications to a stock Vex robot, being careful to remain within the set rules of the competition. Teams then competed on a playing field, making their robots perform specific tasks. The theme of this year’s competition is Star Gazer, and students are required to program their robots to knock foam
stars off of a ledge and pick them up or knock them out of the playing field. The Wantagh Robotics Team is now qualified for the Vex Robotics Southern New York Championship in March and the Vex National Championship later this school year. The district congratulates the team on this outstanding accomplishment.

Winning Season The four-member team is comprised of seniors Amanda DeLisi, Alyssa Breeze, Skye Mollica and junior Amanda Petrillo. Amanda DeLisi and Amanda Petrillo were recently voted as top bowlers to watch on Long Island. In addition, DeLisi currently holds a
175 average and is ranked ninth in Nassau County, while Petrillo holds a 195 average and is ranked third in Nassau County. The Levittown School District wishes the team much success during the bowling season.

Northside School students presented two completed projects to the trustees, Central Administration and community during the January 11th board of education public meeting held at Levittown Memorial Education Center. Fourth-graders in Melissa Dinkelacker’s and Kevin Vilbig’s class demonstrated how the weight of cardboard affected the speed of their vehicles during their
Cardboard Boxcar Derby. As part of the science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics unit, the students studied the forces of motion and integrated science principles with math and writing. At the end of their presentation, they showed those in attendance how the cars worked. In an effort to show their appreciation of Levittown veterans, Northside students also created a large American
flag from Popsicle sticks. In art class, each student wrote the name of a family member(s) who has served in the military on a red, white or blue Popsicle stick. Many wrote thank you messages to these beloved veterans. The flag is on display at Levittown Memorial Education Center. Art teacher Nikki Kessler said, “We hope this project shows the gratitude we feel for those who have served the country.”

A Lesson in Mandarin
Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Department of World Languages expanded its offerings for the 20162017 school year with the addition of Mandarin Chinese. “The response to the program was positive, and classes are now well under way at both Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools,” said World Languages Chairperson Rosa Kaplan.
At the start of the year, seventh-grade students began studying the Chinese language and culture with their teacher, Helen Han. Through a storytelling approach, students were quickly immersed in the language, as Ms. Han believes in teaching her entire lesson in Mandarin. “It did not take long for students to begin speaking in Mandarin and they are already reading and writing simplified Chinese
characters and Pinyin,” said Renée Fallon, a world languages chairperson. The students are also learning about Chinese culture. Han incorporates authentic materials, videos, music and her own experience involving daily life in China. Currently there are 35 students enrolled in the program, including 15 at Grand Avenue Middle School and 20 at Merrick Avenue Middle School.

Youth Clinic During the holiday break, the Sanford H. Calhoun High School girls varsity and junior varsity basketball teams held a basketball skills clinic for fourth- to eighth-grade girls in the
Merrick and North Merrick communities. Nearly 60 girls attended and learned various skills, performed drills and built confidence. The next clinic will be held on January 21st, 2017,

Fourth-grade students at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore were immersed in a two-day in-house field trip to American Indian territory to hone their knowledge of the Eastern Woodland Native Americans. The curriculum-based event titled “Journeys Into American Indian Territory” discussed the geographical location of the Algonquian and Iroquoian peoples, their government and
modes of survival. The program also stressed principles taught in the district’s character education program, which focuses on core values and leadership principles. Presenter Ronnie Cornacchio explained to the students that tribes had to work together to survive. “It was a balanced society that depended on teamwork,” he said. Students also learned about respect, kindness
and teamwork during presenter Maddi Cheers’ telling of an Iroquoian tale titled “Lesson of the NoFace Doll.” During the field trip, students explored artifacts in the museum and a longhouse, learned to make clay pots, played traditional games, listened to Native American legends and learned traditional Iroquoian dances and music.
