Math-A-Thon Fundraiser

aura Koenig’s sixth-graders at Wisdom Lane Middle School in the Levittown School District have raised $1,800 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by participating in the hospital’s Annual Math-a-thon. For 25 years, Wisdom Lane students have been honing their math skills and soliciting sponsors to raise donations to help children with serious illnesses. To date, the school has raised approximately $117,000. Congratulations!

help faculty members grow their skills, and help the schools groom their next generation of skilled administrators. The Diocese of Rockville Centre Education Department and the elementary schools are currently working with St John’s University, Fordham University and Molloy College on initiatives to advance Catholic education. St. John’s University announced the establishment of the St. John’s Catholic School Scholarship in November of 2011 that provides any graduate of a Catholic high school a minimum of $10,000 over four years, with a maximum potential scholarship of $20,000, based on financial need. The scholarship will benefit many of our students, will help to strengthen the Catholic school network, and is a strong endorsement by St. John’s University in the value of a Catholic school education.

The relationship with St John’s also helps with two professional development programs for principals and faculty. Through project TIE (Training Innovative Educators), St. John’s has been providing our schools with intensive professional development with a focus on Math and ELA teaching strategies. The second program, CLT (Curriculum Learning Teams), involves meetings at the university and onsite at the schools to work on new curriculum and instructional practices. The Diocese has also worked with Fordham University to develop and educate future Administrators. Teachers in the Diocese who have been chosen to participate in this program receive a Masters degree in Administration. The commitment to excellence displayed by participants in this program assures that the Diocese will have future leaders with the required competencies to lead as visionaries

and manage operations successfully. Molloy College and the Diocese have created a series of workshops to improve instructional delivery to meet the needs of diverse learners. The Molloy faculty has been working closely with schools in the Diocese on response to intervention, the use of educational technology, and the implementation of best practices. One of the most interesting aspects of the work with Molloy has been the pilot program to integrate iPads into the special education program at St. Agnes Cathedral School in Garden City. Together, from the formation of values in elementary school, to the development of character in high school, to the polishing of skills in these great colleges and universities, Catholic children get an advantage for life, and their families get a solid return on their investment.

School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) along with Farmingdale State College Foundation will present its annual Fred Breithut Scholarship Breakfast Fundraiser. The event will be held February 14th at the new Campus Center at Farmingdale State College, starting at 8:30 a.m. This year’s theme is “We Love Robotics!” All proceeds will go to benefit the Fred Breithut Scholarship. The scholarship, which was created in 2009, is awarded to an incoming Farmingdale State College student who will receive $1,000 for each semester he/she attends the college. It is a tradition for SBPLI to keep this scholarship intact due to Mr. Breithut’s love and admiration for students when he was alive. The scholarship truly represents what Mr. Breithut supported: to further the education of the youth on Long Island. Admission is a suggested donation of $30. Those

State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher today announced that Stony Brook University will play a leadership role in the system’s introduction of Open SUNY, offering one of the first degree programs to be powered by this signature initiative. Stony Brook’s Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering online degree will now be offered to students with a comprehensive suite of supports and services to aid in degree completion. SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher introduced the new “Open SUNY+” degree programs during her annual State of the University Address today in Albany. “Open SUNY will provide our students with the nation’s leading online learning experience, drawing on the power of SUNY to expand access, improve completion, and

prepare more students for success,” said Chancellor Zimpher. “In addition to these new, fully-online degree programs, Open SUNY will take every online course we offer at every SUNY campus - now upwards of 12,000 course selections conducted by 7,000 faculty - and make them easy to find and accessible for every SUNY student and prospective leaners around the globe.” “We are proud of our collaboration and success in serving a qualified student population that may not otherwise be able to pursue a degree in electrical engineering,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Friends By: Bob Sinclair A breathtaking summer sunrise enhanced the silhouette of two couples wandering along a winding path toward a serene and deserted beach. They were captivated by the ocean’s rising tide, as the cascade of rolling waves tenderly rearranged all the sand within their reach. Caressed and warmed by the brilliance of the early morning sun, and the magic of the moment, they steal a breath of time to scratch their names in the inviting, ever-shifting sand. Embracing the tranquility of their surroundings, each couple, moved by the power and timeless majesty of the sea, seems to reach out to one another as their fingers instinctively intertwine, making it difficult to distinguish one hand from the other hand.

Returning at sunset, serenaded by the haunting sounds of the sea, only to discover the ocean had once again somewhat magically shifted the sand, washing away most letters and scrambling the rest into one word that expresses so much more. It Takes An Island Debra Markowitz and her partner, John Marean, of North Merrick always discussed amusing story lines and funny anecdotes when walking their rescue dog, Trippy. When Debra Markowitz wrote the screenplay for the short film, The Last Taxi Driver, they discussed different people who would play the roles if it ever got produced. Then Debra spoke to her filmmaker friends, and the wheels started turning. Debra Markowitz and The Majors Productions (Marc Riou of Huntington, Nugent Cantileno of Mineola, Robert La Rosa of Valley Stream, Joshua Paige of Port Jefferson Station and Carrie Ferrante of Connecticut) explored the possibility of producing this dark comedic horror film on Long Island. John Marean and his producing partner, Cecily Mihok-Trenka (Rapier Wit Films of Merrick) got involved in the production, and it became even more of a reality. Steve Sage of Steve Sage Productions (originally from Greenlawn, now of Rocky Point) jumped on the bandwagon with his Red camera. Kory Diskin (Roslyn Heights) came on as Production Designer. Regina Hardy (originally of Glen Cove, now of Hempstead) came on to assist as 2nd AD. Helene Schulman from Suffolk signed on as Set

Photographer/Videographer. As per writer/director/producer, Debra Markowitz, “The most exciting thing about The Last Taxi Driver is the collaboration between all the Long Island filmmakers. It’s wonderful to work with all of these talented, creative

The Last Taxi Driver is a dark horror comedy about one man’s determination to retain his career as a taxi driver and refuses to give up when most of his customers are eaten by zombies. The teams will have six weeks to construct the robot and prepare for the upcoming competition to be held on March 27th-29th at Hofstra University.

Residents of New York can ring in the New Year with 10 free flowering trees by joining the Arbor Day Foundation any time during January 2014. By becoming a part of the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation, new members will receive two Sargent crabapple, three American redbuds, two Washington hawthorns and three white flowering dogwoods. “These beautiful trees will give your home in New York lovely flowers with pink, yellow and white colors,” said John Rosenow, founder and

chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “These trees are perfect for large and small spaces, and they will provide food and habitat for songbirds.” The free trees are part of the Foundation’s Trees for America campaign. The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between February 1st and May 31st, with enclosed planting instructions.
