The snooze button. That wonderful option to roll over and drift back to sleep for just a few more minutes, or hours, apparently. Hence, why it is now 5 p.m. on deadline day and I am just beginning to formulate a column. Well, some semblance of one anyway. So what has everyone been doing this winter to keep occupied now that the holiday rush is officially over? Catching up on a little reading, maybe? Some TV series binge watching, perhaps? I, personally, am guilty of both vices, having

made it my mission to complete the entire five volume series of Game of Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netﬂix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult. (Speaking of, I don’t think people use terms like “hence”

and “whilst” quite enough, don’t you agree? A column topic for another time.) In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to fill your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again. Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.

All proceeds raised from this Dress Down Day was donated to the “Tunnel to Towers Foundation” for the families of the two brave, dedicated, and beloved NYPD officers that were innocent victims in the horrible December 20th attack in Brooklyn. The “Tunnel to Towers Foundation” supports first responders, including Police Officers, and honors the sacrifice these men and women make daily. With the unexpected

snow setting the mood, the morning began with the respectful reading of the names of Police Officers that are family members of the students and staff of Holy Family School. The student’s then listened as our Commissioner of Religious Affairs read the Policeman’s prayer to Saint Michael, everyone then recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang God Bless America. As far as the profit, there was no set donation amount. Students, faculty, staff, and families sent in the amount they wished to donate. The amount almost tripled our usual dree down day profit! In addition to donating money, every member of the Holy Family School Family promised to keep ALL Police Officers and their loved ones in their prayers. Students from Nursery through grade eight said they were proud to be wearing BLUE as a sign of respect and gratitude for ALL Police Officers!

Southern Cheyenne family, also shared stories with the children. The fourth-graders also enjoyed various other workshops devoted to Iroquois government and clay to go along with a music and dance experience.

Sonali Persaud, a sophomore at East Meadow High School, has been selected as a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership ambassador. She will participate with other teenagers at the HOBY Leadership Conference this spring. This conference brings tomorrow’s leaders together with today’s recognized leaders in business, government, education and other professions to discuss present and future issues. Sonali was selected through a rigorous interview process that

included an evaluation by faculty, administrators and a former HOBY ambassador. She unanimously impressed the panel with her confidence, poise, insight and genuine concern for others. Sonali is a very conscientious student who is involved in various extracurricular activities. She is a volunteer at North Shore LIJ Hospital, where she helps in various departments. A devoted girl scout, she’s working toward her gold award, volunteering regularly at Sunrise Senior Living.

Their project was: “Optimization of Catalytic Activity in Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells Utilizing Metal-Functionalized Graphene Oxide/Partially Reduced Graphene Oxide Coatings.” This project researched the potential of making the hydrogen fuel cell a viable energy source. Regional Finalist Russell Charnoff received a $1,000 scholarship also for his project, “Synthesis and Characterization of Graphene Nanoparticle Infused Polyethylene Nanocomposite Material for Enhanced Mechanical and Thermal Properties.” The finalist, Katie Mazalkova of Valley Stream competed with her partner from Jericho High School in the finals at George Washington University in Washington D.C. and they

target for drug-medicated atherosclerosis cessation.” This project examined a strain of aortic stem cells and their role in the immune response that causes atherosclerosis. Their research could develop new ways of treating heart disease. “The Town of Hempstead is very proud of these exceptional students,” said Murray. “I would like to congratulate the students, their families and schools for their outstanding achievements. I wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.” This year, a record number of 4,428 students registered for the competition and 1,784 projects were submitted. 408 students were named semifinalists and 97 were named regional finalists who advanced to compete at six Universities across the country. In New York State, 67 students were named Semifinalists and 17 students were named Regional finalist. 10 students reside in the Town of Hempstead (1 Finalist, 4 Regional finalists and 5 Semifinalists).

Hempstead UFSD senior Maurice Johnson, a music student at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts, has had an incredibly successful year. The teen vocalist was named a Finalist in the YoungArts Talent Search and has been selected to perform during Grammy Week in 2015. Maurice will head to Miami this month for the YoungArts finals, where he will compete to become a Presidential Scholar in the Arts, for which he would receive a medal from the president and have the opportunity to perform at the Kennedy

Center in Washington, DC. Maurice is one of only 178 students to be chosen as a finalist from more than 11,000 students nationwide. In February, Maurice will head out to California to perform at a host of events during Grammy Week, at the invitation of the national Grammys in the Schools program. The highlight of the trip will be the opportunity for Maurice to sing at the post show for the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. An all around talent, Maurice is studying vocal jazz, classical, and is a member of the pop ensemble, but his first love is gospel. He hopes to become a gospel singer professionally and is well on his way.
