Wantagh Runners Flex Their Fundraising Muscle

Wantagh High School’s cross-country team wants everyone to stay healthy and fit. Knowing that some children might face physical limitations to do so, students recently held a fundraiser to help them overcome these challenges. The cross-country team recently held a pushup challenge, which raised $630 for the Limb Kind Foundation. The Long Island-based organization

provides prosthetic limbs to children across the world who are unable to afford them. Cross-country coach Julie Magnuson said that team members wanted to help children have the same ability to compete as athletes, which is why they chose this organization. The pushup challenge was held afterschool with about 25 students and staff members participating.

“We thought it was a great way to raise money for kids who need prosthetics,” said junior Katherine Killian, who completed about 50 pushups. With 73 pushups, junior Ashlee Favata was one of the top finishers. She enjoyed the event because it promoted physical fitness, generated a lot of school spirit and, most importantly, was for a good cause.

Post 9/11 Veterans To Be Recognized For Their Service

Local not-for-profit organization, Heroes Among Us joins with the United Veterans Organization of Nassau County and local Veterans of Foreign Wars groups, and the Nassau County Executive’s office to build a monument in Eisenhower Park to honor all post 9/11 servicemen and women. The monument will join other memorials in Veterans Memorial Park which honor veterans who served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans Monument will be the only monument of its kind on Long Island and one of the first in New York State honoring the courage, dedication, and bravery of United States servicemen and women who fought in military conﬂicts after 9/11. Over this twenty-year period, 7,000 servicemen and women died in battle and 30,000 post 9/11 veterans have died by suicide. The monument will provide a permanent reminder of their service and provide a much-needed sanctuary and

reﬂection space for veterans along with their families. “We are excited to have the assistance from our community to properly respect and honor our veterans in building this monument, which we feel was overdue,” said Virginia Cervasio, founder of Heroes Among Us. The estimated cost to build the monument is $150,000 and all the groups involved are currently working to raise the needed funds. Su’s mentor throughout the three-year process was ASR teacher Orquidea AfonsoAncieto, while ASR teacher Barbi Frank served as a mentor to Brown, Lin, Luisi, Prainitio and Rigaud. “They have inspired, guided and mentored our research students for three years while on remote learning, hybrid, and inperson instruction,” added Soel. “We could not be prouder of our advanced science research program and all the students who want to take on the challenge of creating

original research during their high school years,” added Superintendent Michael Harrington. “A program like the one that exists in our district does not happen without some very special educators. We are in awe of the six students named semifinalists and their projects.” These scholars represent 185 American and International high schools in 37 states and three countries, including three homeschools. Each student will be awarded $2,000 while an additional $2,000 will go to the school to support its

science program. On Jan. 20, 40 of the scholars will be named finalists, competing for more than $1.8 million in awards March 10-16. The Regeneron Science Talent Search is hosted by the Society for Science, a program of Society for Science since 1942, is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. Each year, nearly 2,000 student entrants submit original research in critically important scientific fields of study and are judged by leading experts in their fields.

This year, players got to work several hours before the race began by marking the course and setting up refreshment stations along the route. During the 5K, they handed out water and candy to the runners and gathered at the end to cheer participants as they crossed the finish line. Drew Palladino noted that the Wantagh community is extremely supportive of the football team throughout the season, filling the stands and cheering on the Warriors. The players volunteer their time at the Freaky 5K to express their gratitude. “It’s the least we can do to give back after all they’ve done for us,” Nick Aldino said. “I like the feeling of helping people out.” Luke Janosko said the event has such as positive vibe and it was great to

see so many people from the community come out for a good cause. Mark Maniet added that children like seeing the football players at the race, so their presence sets a good example about the value of community service. After the Freaky 5K comes Theissen’s annual holiday toy drive. Sean Carlo said that several players also contributed by bringing their donations to the foundation’s Wantagh Avenue headquarters. Most recently, the football team was named the recipient of the Community Service Award from the Nassau County Chapter of the New York State Athletic Administrators Association. The team will be recognized at a luncheon on June 10 at Westbury Manor.

The Wantagh High School football team continues to shine on an off the field. Not only did the team advance to the conference semifinals in the fall 2021 season, the players were also recognized for their community service work with two awards. The Warriors were presented with the Community Service Award at the Nassau County football dinner following the season. Coach Keith Sachs said that the award, given by the Nassau County High School Football Coaches Association, was in recognition of the team’s longstanding partnership with John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Every October, members of the varsity football team volunteer their time at the foundation’s annual Freaky 5K race in the community.

The holidays were a little brighter across Long Island, thanks to the generosity and thoughtfulness of PSEG Long Island employees. By participating in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program, an employee-led toy drive and a holiday greeting card campaign, dozens of coworkers helped spread cheer and hope this holiday season for neighbors in need. More than 120 co-workers fulfilled holiday wishes for 105 Suffolk County children enrolled in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. From bikes, tablets and video games, to toys, dolls and action figures, several hundred gifts were donated in all. A handful of PSEG Long Island employees also helped distribute the goodies and load clients’ vehicles the week before Christmas at the Salvation Army’s Riverhead headquarters. Here’s what some employees said about participating: “I am happy to carry on this tradition that my family started when I was a kid,” said Ashley Arndt of Dix Hills. “We always sponsored a family in need and it felt so good to support these sweet
