In the interest of reshaping the model of the traditional library space, the staff at Merrick Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, recently unveiled their redesigned library media center – a true combination of the technology of the present paired with the aura of the past. “It has become the heart of the building,” said English Chairperson Adeline Atkins. “The entire space is warm, inviting and intellectually engaging.” To encourage and reinforce the value of literacy, Merrick Avenue Principal Dr. Taryn Johnson, noted that it was essential to include different learning areas, access to technology
and literature that was readily at the fingertips of the students. “It was imperative that we remained cognizant of the fact that students learn differently and that the varying spaces support students’ learning styles.” Keenly aware that this generation has embraced learning through technology, this new library is replete with iPads, Chromebooks, Kindles, Google Goggles, an Interactive SmartBoard, Apple TV and a 3-D Printer. Dr. Johnson added that plans for a Makerspace are in the works. In homage to the original library, a card catalog has been repurposed into a charging station and a supply closet has been transformed into a lit
display case. The district’s maintenance team restored the beauty of the original oak cabinetry through a sanding and restaining process that harkens the shelving back to its original era and grace. The signatures of both classic and modern writers adorn the perimeter of the entire library separated by stacks of gilded books. Each signature is reflective of the spirit of the age in which the writers lived and the passion evoked in the subject of their works. Singing for All to Hear fortunate children with a warm and cozy winter. This year’s collections resulted in seven huge bags of items. The assemblyman also commended the council for how eloquently they conducted their meetings and promised to bring a few tips to the Assembly in Albany.
Under the guidance of their school’s music department, fifth- and sixth-grade students at Lakeside School in the Merrick School District displayed the fruits of their diligent practice and burgeoning musical skills with recent festive winter concerts. Both concerts featured
a variety of winter classics by the school’s jazz band, band, orchestra, honors string ensemble, chorus and chorale. The first was performed before an audience of fellow students, teachers and administrators at the elementary school. The second, held at Merrick Avenue Middle School at
night, was performed for families and community members. The Lakeside School community applauds these young musicians on their talents and extends a special thank-you to Lakeside music directors Elizabeth Comito, Jeffrey Glemboski and Judith Witmer for their dedication.

Artwork on Display Students spanning first through 12th grade in the East Meadow School District were recognized for their talents and creativity during the district’s “A Young Artist Exhibition.” Students, families and faculty members browsed the 130 pieces of artwork on display at the Leon J.
Campo Salisbury Center as W. Tresper Clarke High School’s string quartet performed winter classics. Those who had their work on display had been chosen for their adept technique in collage, painting, drawing and photography. The district extends special thanks to Assistant Superintendent
for Curriculum and Instruction Cindy Munter, Director of Music and Art Kathryn Behr, Art Chairperson Heather Anastasio, art show coordinator Lisa Young and the district Art Faculty for their hard work and dedication in arranging this year’s gallery.
Cracking the Code During a physical education unit, Shore Road School students solved puzzles to unveil corresponding Bellmore School District core values and leadership principles. Based on the popular game Escape the Room, the students worked in teams to solve clues at
various stations, including Lock the Clocks, Cargo Conundrum, Puzzling Puzzles, Square Your Squares and Book Buster. By working together to unlock the codes, the students revealed district values such as teamwork, synergy, sportsmanship and respect.
Physical education teachers Mallory Cogen and Brian Scott said the unit, which also took place at Winthrop Avenue School, honed the students’ sportsmanship and teamwork skills, while combining math and English language arts skills.
Accepting Applications The North Bellmore School District will once again offer Universal Pre-K to District children, if funding is received from the New York State Education Department. Applications are available in the main office at all five elementary schools and may be picked up on school days between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Information about the program is available on the district website at www. northbellmoreschools.org. The pre-K program,
which is contingent upon state funding, will begin in September 2017 and run through June 2018 at no cost to selected families or the school district. Because there are a limited number of available spaces, participants will be selected by lottery. Children who will be 4 years old on or before December 1st, 2017 and will be eligible to enter kindergarten in the North Bellmore School District in September 2018, qualify
for Universal Pre-K, which will take place at local preschools. Parents will not have a choice as to location, and transportation will be the responsibility of the parents. Applications must be received by Friday, March 17th to be considered. Eagle Scout Soars Freddy Parola of Wantagh Boy Scout Troop 96 recently completed his Eagle Scout Project at the Bellmore Presbyterian Church on Bellmore Avenue. Freddy sought to make the Church more access friendly through the installation of a handicap/ accessibility ramp at the main entrance of the Church. With the support
of his Church and members of Troop 96 of Wantagh, Freddy spent several months planning, organizing and implementing the installation of the ramp at the Church. Over the course of two weekends, over forty Scouts, community and Scout leaders came together to prepare the foundation and install the ramp. As a result
of Freddy’s project, all congregants and visitors to the Church now have direct and convenient access to the Church Sanctuary. The ramp was dedicated on Sunday, December 18th at approximately 11:30 a.m. after Church services. At that time, the Pastor, congregants and visitors formally recognized the ramp as a new addition to the Church campus.

Coca-Cola Semifinalist Danielle Mahn, a senior at Division Avenue High School, was selected as a 2017 semifinalist for the Coca-Cola Scholars Program for her leadership, academic achievement and commitment to the community. The Coca-Cola Scholars Program is one of the nation’s most recognized corporate scholarship sponsors, which sponsors more
than 1,400 exceptional college students annually, with scholarships of $3.45 million awarded through the foundation’s programs. Once semifinalist applications are reviewed, 250 regional finalists will be chosen to continue the selection process, and regional finalists will be determined in late January. Finalists will then interview in person or via web conference to become
one of 150 Coca-Cola Scholars. Students selected as Coca-Cola Scholars will attend Scholars Weekend in Atlanta in April 2017 to receive a scholarship totaling $20,000 from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. The Levittown School District congratulates Danielle on this outstanding accomplishment.

How’s it Going? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
So… how is everyone’s year coming along so far? Are we still avidly pursuing our New Year’s resolutions, or have we moved on to other, more realistic, goals? Sure, we’re only slightly more than two weeks underway into 2017, but even the most promising “fresh starts” have been known to bite the dust not even a few days in to a new year. Personally, I don’t see the point. Chances are, the second something negative happens, your entire motivation will be thrown off anyway; so, rather than give yourself unnecessary reason for disappointment, keep your goals open and flexible – much like life. The best-laid plans more often than not do not go according to any pre-conceived notion of how things are “supposed” to transpire. The sooner we
realize this, and accept it, the better off we will be in the long run. Take the weather, for instance. Mother Nature is not a force that can be predicted, especially at this time of year. Make all the plans you wish; chances are, they will be forced into “rain check” mode far too frequently. Personally, I’ve already had an entire weekend’s worth of appointments and obligations squashed due to snow, and have tentatively (fingers crossed) rescheduled for the next available opportunity. To be continued… until spring, most likely. And then there are the roads. Traveling on Long Island is a skill to be mastered under the best of circumstances. Throw in some inclement weather and it’s a regular three ring circus, complete with a collection of characters who
either A) should not be on the road at all, in any season; or B) had best make like the groundhog and hibernate for the duration of the winter. Crawling, speeding, braking unnecessarily, swerving all over the road… such are just a few examples of the skills witnessed daily on my fairly brief commute to and from work. Throw in a flurry or two, and forget about it. Such is the state of life in January. And if not now, there are similar factors to face each and every subsequent month of the year. So take your resolutions – or whatever form of self-improvement you have documented for yourself in 2017 – keep them in your back pocket as a reminder, and move onward and upward. There will be a rainbow over the horizon soon enough. Just don’t drive off the road admiring it.
