Abbe Cohen’s fourthgrade class at Birch School in Merrick recently took on the role of engineers and became problem-solvers for the farming industry during an educational and important project designed at slowing and preventing soil erosion. Students learned how running water can change the shape of land and were tasked with helping a farmer deal with heavy

rainstorms that were eroding crop soil, thus inhibiting crop growth. Each student was asked to develop a small-scale model of a hillside in order to slow or prevent the water flow from effecting the land. First, each student set out to identify the best materials to build an effective hillside model, then diagrammed their models and planned

Taking on Erosion solutions to test. Along the way, each chose a method for measuring the rate of erosion and brainstormed ways to change how water flows down their hillside. Once completed, they tested their models and identified variables to change and maintain, even analyzing their own testing procedures to ensure a successful outcome to keep their farmland suitable for cultivating crops.

Students spanning first through 12th grade in the East Meadow School District were recognized for their talents and creativity during the district’s Winter Art Show at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center on December 20th. Students, families and faculty members browsed the 130 works of art on display as East Meadow High School’s string quartet performed winter classics. Those whose pieces were on exhibit had been chosen for their adept technique in graphic design, painting, drawing and photography. We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book. There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede. This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest
realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal. Here’s to smoother paths ahead.

Tricks of the Trade “Let the trading begin!” teacher Rachel Graber announced to sixthgraders to begin the annual trade fair at Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District on January 9th. As part of their study on the New Stone Age, students learned about the bartering system to understand how people acquired goods before currency was invented. The sixth-graders had to come up with their own handmade items to trade with each other.
Products included candles, keychains, coasters, toys and baked goods. They had to negotiate with each other, and could even trade items they acquired in prior trades. Every student got to keep his or her goods. Sixth-grader Paul D’Auria made paintings on canvases inspired by New York City street art. He said he learned that making a deal can be difficult, and negotiations require patience. The assignment included a writing activity as
students had to complete essays explaining how they created their handmade items. They also made advertisements for their products on posterboard, which were displayed at the fair. “This was a fun way to simulate what people had to do thousands of years ago,” Ms. Graber said. “This activity covered so many different subject areas including English language arts, social studies and art.”

Hope for the Holidays The fifth-graders in Jennifer Abshire’s class at Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District came together in the spirit of the season when they wrapped toys for 26 families as part of the school’s “Hope for the Holidays” toy drive. Over the course of three weeks, students, staff and administrators raised more than $1,800 for the toy drive through two
schoolwide fundraisers. On “Cozy Day,” students and faculty were encouraged to wear pajamas and donate $1 to decorate a heart for display in the school’s lobby. Continuing the comfortable dress theme, the second fundraiser, “Jeans for Joy,” asked faculty to wear jeans on a designated Friday to make their contribution. In addition, teachers and staff could sponsor a student to
donate to the holiday drive. After all donations were collected, Ms. Abshire’s class visited Toys R Us in Carle Place to purchase gifts for local families. Listening to holiday music and wearing festive clothes, the fifth-graders gathered in groups to wrap the presents, which included Play-Doh sets, Legos, coloring books, racecars and a princess dress chest.

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!
“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.
After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.
Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information.

Each scholar, selected from 1,818 entrants, receives a $2,000 award with an additional $2,000 going to his or her respective school. The 40 finalists chosen to compete in Washington, D.C. in March will be announced on January 23rd.

Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me
that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him.

The Wantagh High School robotics team defeated 32 competitors to earn the Tournament Championship Award during the Vex Robotics Competition Qualifier, held in Farmingdale on January 7th. The team now qualifies for the Vex Robotics Southern New York State Championship, being held this March in Katonah, New York. During a Vex robotics tournament, studentcompetitors employ science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills to design and build a robot
to play against other teams of students in a game-based challenge. Vex robotics competitions provide students with lifetime skills including teamwork, leadership and communication. This year’s competition theme is “In the Zone.” Adviser John Walsh explained that the objectives during the qualifier competition required the teams to design and build a robot with the ability to pick up mobile goal posts, stack cones on the posts and then place the mobile posts in the field corner.
An additional objective required the robot to stack cones on a stationary goal post. There were two components to the match. An autonomous component necessitated many hours of computer programming, while the driver component required hours of practice to master control of the robot’s functions. The Wantagh School District congratulates the robotics team on this outstanding accomplishment and continued success.
Tech Day Held Wantagh High School’s doors were held open on January 6th for the fifth annual TechDay, during which more than 100 students in grades 5-12 expanded their knowledge of game design and programming, web development and mobile development. The goal of the program was to introduce and expand the students’ knowledge in the computer science field, which is expected to continue growing during the next decade. TechDay co-founder,
district alumnus and current Board of Education Vice President Peter Mountanos, explained that the goal of the TechDay team, comprised of district alumni, was to assist students in understanding the basic notions of how computers work and can be used. “Beyond just giving students a useful tool, we hoped to cultivate the joy and enthusiasm we ourselves feel toward this rewarding approach to problem-solving,” he said. Students were separated into classes based on

coding experience level, which included Scratch, Python and web design. Alumni also relayed their experiences with coding in the workplace and during college. District Director of Information Systems and Instructional Technology Penny Curry added, “Students who attended TechDay advanced their knowledge of existing and emerging computer technologies, making them better equipped for the future.”

Cavit Ireland, an eighth-grader at Wantagh Middle School, was the winner in the schoollevel competition for the National Geography Bee. He will now take a test for a chance to participate in the state finals. The National Geography Bee not only reviews and tests students’ knowledge of world geography, but is designed to encourage
teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject and increase public awareness about geography. Prior to the holiday break, preliminary rounds were conducted in all classes, and 29 students qualified to compete in the schoolwide finals on Jan. 10. Under the direction of social studies teacher David Cippoletti
and District Supervisor of Social Studies Christopher Widmann, competitors were tested in a challenging contest on their knowledge of U.S. cities, historic places, continents and U.S. and world geography. The district congratulates Cavit on this academic achievement and wishes him the best of luck in his advancement in the competition.
Cultural Pride West Islip’s Oquenock Elementary School recently celebrated International Week, with students, teachers and staff recognizing various cultures. English language learners at each grade level participated in a variety of projects reflecting their backgrounds, and students,
teachers and staff members wore attire or shirts related to their cultural heritages. “This special International Week opportunity allowed many students to make connections with teachers, and it also opened up conversations about culture and commonalities
among students, teachers and staff members,” said Oquenock ENL teacher Vanessa Daige. “It also allowed our ELLs to showcase their cultural heritages and allow them to be prideful of their cultural backgrounds.”

Race to the Finish Reaching the finish line by reading 50,000 additional minutes this month is the goal of Bellmore students at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center, who are celebrating the annual Pick A Reading Partner event. With the impending Olympic winter games televised from South Korea in a few weeks, the theme for this year’s PARP is “We are Reading Champions,” and student reading minutes are adding up
quickly, said Principal Patricia Castine. Sponsored by the PTA, PARP is an annual event, which encourages students to read an additional 15 minutes per day with a partner of choice, making this important life skill not only a school to home connection, but fun and informative as well. During the threeweek period, students are expressing their enthusiasm for reading by wearing school colors
(blue and white), jerseys representing their favorite sports teams and patriotic colors (red, white and blue) in support for the U.S. Olympic team. Bellmore Public librarian Miss Debbie will also read some of her favorite books to the students. Other scheduled events include a cultural assembly and a school carnival, in addition to various classroom activities that bolster the students’ reading.
