Through fundraising efforts, the club raised funds to purchase a variety of toys. The club traveled with parents and staff to Toys “R” Us in Carle Place and purchased a number of items. Reach out and Read is a nonprofit organization of medical providers who promote early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide. Thousands of doctors and nurses at nearly 5,000 Reach out and Read sites distribute 6.5 million books each year. The program serves more than one-third of all children living in poverty and continues to grow. Reach out and Read at Winthrop University Hospital was started in 2001 by Bill Bryson Brockman, Ph.D., Chief of Behavioral Pediatrics and longtime volunteer youth advisor at South Nassau Unitarian Universalist Congregation (SNUUC). The youth at SNUUC are organizing a “Put your Heart in Books” book drive through Sunday, February 8th. (Un)Deck The Halls By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it just me, or is the process of “un-decking” the halls one of the least wonderful times of the year? After what seems like months of preparation and primping, stringing lights and garland, strategically hanging ornaments and placing knick-knacks, it’s over. Just like that. As of New Year’s Day, it seems just about everyone is all but done with the Christmas spirit as soon as the ball drops in Times Square. Out goes the tree

to the curb, down comes the décor and back go the unacceptable gifts to the store. ‘Tis the season, indeed. I suppose it wouldn’t be so bad if there was another festive occasion to look forward to, but everything just seems so bare once the holidays have passed. Not to mention the cold, stark winter weather lurking just outside the window… the coziness factor is definitely lacking. And why is it, every year without fail, that nothing ever seems to fit in precisely the way it did

when you unpacked it to begin with? I mean, sure, you may accumulate a new ornament or two here and there, but not to the point of seriously contemplating the option of subletting your kitchen cabinets as additional storage space. Ah, but at least there’s not much else going on this time of year. If there is a time for hibernating and reorganizing, it is surely now. Perhaps a few Christmas tunes and twinkling lights would make this mundane process more festive.

Sitting here on a bench, the sun shining down on my head As I look around, I begin to use my five senses Touch I’m touching hot wood that is as warm as a cup of tea Sound I hear birds chirping a soft melody while a lawn mower is buzzing far in the distance, making the birds sing louder Sight I’m seeing green all around me, the trees whooshing in the light breeze very faintly The grass sitting, still rooted in the dirt Scent I smell the faint scent of fresh tangy cut grass as the wind blows the smell all around me. The air is fresh, not a cloud in the sky It’s a vast open blue, as if an ocean without the soaring waves It is hot, but a good hot; mild,where you want to be out all day There seems to be no end in sight, time is gone

Eight students from John F. Kennedy Middle School’s Student Council in the Bethpage School District recently visited the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park. As part of the “Helping

Hands” program students baked goods to donate to the house and also brought more than 20 boxes of toys, games, dolls and stuffed animals that were collected from its holiday toy drive. In addition,

Something that many people argue and converse over has become a major issue in the United States: obesity. What is happening? What is causing this epidemic? Whose fault is it? Better yet, whose responsibility is it to fix it? Imagine waking up one morning and realizing all of the food in your house was missing? Even further, imagine waking up one morning with food in your cabinets that the government put there for you? Obesity is a growing burden on the United States, but why are we targeting and punishing the symptom instead of the problem? Is obesity really about the food? Or is it about the people? The problem is not the

food; it is about how we feel about ourselves. Why are we putting the blame on fast food companies instead of taking responsibility for a problem we caused for ourselves that we are too lazy to fix? It is time for us to start asking questions. It is time for us to start taking charge of our own lives instead of expecting others to come in and save us. We are a part of a life in which it is rare that we take responsibility for our own actions and the repercussions that may follow. This life is ours, and we must have knowledge in order to have liberty. We must take action, not by telling people what to eat and what not to eat, but instead by learning

about ourselves and our bodies and what makes them work. With that knowledge, the self-respect will hopefully follow and the chance for a change will shine through. We must stop treating the symptoms of our problems... instead we must treat the problems themselves if we want to see results. Instead of blindly following the rules that take away our personal rights and decisions, we must take hold of the opportunity we now have that gives us the chance to reinvent ourselves for the better. We must take hold of the opportunity we now have that gives us the chance to recreate the lives that we have and the futures that we want.

EARNING THEIR LOOPS - Seaford’s Pack 239 Webelos 2 Den recently went to the Babylon Riding Center to earn their Horseback Riding Belt Loop. The boys were first fitted for helmets. Next, they went on a tour of the stables. Then, they groomed a horse. Finally, they had a riding lesson. They learned to make the horse go forward, backward, left, right and in circles. They even directed their horses through a mini obstacle course. They all had a blast! The boys who took part were Luke, Paul, Gregory, Jack and Chris, and big brother Carl from Boy Scout Troop 239, along with Den Leader Noelle Bloom.

Syosset High School seniors Jiwei Zhong, Divij Sharma and Ridoy Majumdar have been selected as semifinalists in the 2015 Intel Science Talent Search Contest. Only 300 students were designated as semifinalists out of more than 1,800 entrants. “I want to congratulate these students on this impressive recognition, and commend our high school science and research teachers for their excellent program,” said Dr. Thomas Rogers, superintendent of Syosset School District. “It’s exciting to see students not only learning scientific concepts, but applying them in ground-breaking, real-world research.” Zhong’s research, titled “Describing Images: The Effect of Modern Communication on Personal Lexicon,” was based on language and communication differences between older, “digital immigrants” and younger “digital

natives” when describing concrete images. Her research concluded that older Internet users had a broader range of lexical knowledge than younger Internet users and that modern communication has had some marginal impact on an individual’s personal vocabulary. Zhong worked under the mentorship of Dr. Arthur Samuel at Stony Book University. Majumdar’s research, partly titled “A Platform for Brain-Guided Prosthetics,” helped create a braincomputer interface that would allow motor-impaired patients to communicate with robotic arms using their brain impulses. His research, under the mentorship of Jonathan Weisz at Columbia University, included noninvasive studies of human blood flow. Sharma’s project, partly titled “Differences in Beam Dynamics Between Electric and Magnetic Rings,”

evaluated the Standard Model in which we understand the universe’s composition. Sharma’s research examined the magnetic and electric fields on protons to determine if there is any asymmetry to matter, which would usher in a New Physics understanding of universal matter. Sharma worked under the mentorship of Dr. Yannis K. Semertzidis from Brookhaven National Laboratory. Each semifinalist receives a $1,000 award from the Intel Foundation with an additional $1,000 going to the district. The 40 finalists in the Intel talent search will be announced on January 21st. Finalists will receive an allexpenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. in March, where they will compete for more than $1 million in awards.
