For his project, Christopher raised funds to clean up the grounds of Jonas E. Salk Middle School in Levittown. Also part of his project was to raise funds to purchase a bench to honor a young boy who attended Jonas E. Salk Middle School and passed away from cancer at the age of 11.

Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District is proud to announce that four seniors have been selected as scholars in the 2017 Regeneron Science Talent Search, (formerly known as the Intel STS). Rachel Jozwik of Wellington C. Mepham High School and Claire Kelly, Jennifer Rakhimov and Michael Sternbach of John F. Kennedy High School are among 300 nationally recognized semifinalists in the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition often considered the “Junior Nobel Prize.” “These students are exemplary young scientists driven by a passion for discovery in their chosen fields of study,” said District
Science Chair Robert Soel. “Their scientific investigations involved hundreds of hours of work under the mentorship of cooperating scientists in the field.” “They are multifaceted, talented young people who are continually expanding their creative horizons,” added District Science Chair Patrick Mannion. Jozwik’s research is titled “Correlation Between the rs53576 SNP and Stress Levels in High School Students;” Kelly’s research is titled “Impulsivity as a Predictor for Enhanced Attention Toward Novel Drug-Paired Cues;” Rakhimov’s research is titled “Mitochondrial Replacement Therapy in Degenerated Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells;” and Sternbach’s research
is titled “Are Yield Curve Inversions Harbingers of Economic Contractions in Emerging Market and Excessively Debt-Ridden Countries?” “They are wonderful role models for their peers and the entire school community is proud of their outstanding achievements,” added Soel. Later this month, 40 finalists will be named and invited to Washington, D.C. in March, where they will display their work to the public, meet with notable scientists and compete for additional awards, including the top prize of $250,000. Wonderland of Strings The sounds of holiday music filled the gymnasium at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District when student vocalists and instrumentalists took the stage for two performances. Amid a bounty of winterthemed decorations created by the fourthand fifth-grade art club, the school’s orchestra, honors ensemble, band,
jazz band, chorus and honors chorus performed winter classics for students, teachers and administrators. The daytime concert was followed by an evening one for families and community members, who enjoyed musical numbers including “Gift of Peace,” “Swingle All the Way” and “Holiday of Music.” Both concerts ended with
all six musical groups joining together for a grand finale performance of “Sleigh Ride.” The Chatterton School community proudly recognizes all studentmusicians for their talents and dedication and thanks music directors Jennifer DiGangi, Marcia Miller and Richard Nasto for their support and guidance.
The Merrick School District will hold kindergarten registration for the 2017-2018 school year from Monday, January 30th through Friday, February 3rd at Birch, Chatterton and Norman J. Levy Lakeside elementary schools. Children who will reach the age of 5 on or before December 1st, 2017 are eligible to enroll in September’s kindergarten class. It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has. Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for. From short stories and plays to novels and poetry, I
delighted in broadening my horizons. College was much of the same, with special emphasis on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them. Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me. Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few
months back. As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved. Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo. I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point. And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.

History teacher Jacqueline Geller said she thinks exposing the students to different religions, cultures and customs allows them to be more socially aware. “Naila’s story of perseverance is truly inspiring,” Geller said. “In a world where people complain about their everyday annoyances, Naila’s experience reminds us that we should be thankful and appreciate the freedoms we have.” “I was so impressed that she was able to open up to us and share her story, said student Kristen Lasker. “I would not have been able to do that and not cry.” “It is crazy to me that they do not have gender equality in other
countries,” added student Gordon Olson. Amin hopes to one day open a safe haven for girls and women who are escaping forced marriages. She is also writing a book about her experience and is starting a foundation. She encouraged students to be socially aware of their surroundings and interactions with people. “Speak up for someone,” she said. “Be the leader. Be that force.” “I hope that the students feel empowered that they can survive anything and do anything if they have the right mind set,” Geller said. “Naila had and still has many obstacles to overcome and yet stood before us, with forgiveness in her heart and goals for human rights set.”

Former child bride Naila Amin is bringing her plight to light and recently visited Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District to educate Leadership and Voices of the Past history students on what is a shockingly common and legal practice in many parts of the work. Betrothed to her cousin in Pakistan at the age of 8, Amin, now 25, is working to change laws to protect other victims. Mepham student Raina Sarfriz read about her story in a Pakistani magazine and arranged for Amin to be a guest speaker. “I wrote an article on her for our school newspaper and thought her experience would be beneficial to my

Fourth-grade students at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore were immersed in a two-day in-house field trip to American Indian territory to hone their knowledge of the Eastern Woodland Native Americans. The curriculum-based event titled “Journeys Into American Indian Territory” discussed the geographical location of the Algonquian and Iroquoian peoples, their government and modes of survival. The program also stressed principles taught in the district’s character education program, which focuses on core values and leadership principles. Presenter Ronnie Cornacchio explained to the students that tribes had to work together to survive. “It was a balanced society that depended on teamwork,” he said. Students also learned about respect, kindness and teamwork during presenter Maddi Cheers’ telling of an Iroquoian tale titled “Lesson of the NoFace Doll.” During the field trip, students explored artifacts in the museum and a longhouse, learned to make clay pots, played traditional games, listened to Native American legends and learned traditional Iroquoian dances and music.

Coca-Cola Semifinalists Two seniors in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District were recently selected as CocaCola Scholar semifinalists. Sara Samir from Sanford H. Calhoun High School and Maximilian Bazil from John F. Kennedy High School were honored for their contributions to the community and the
science field. After the applicant pool was whittled down from 86,000 applicants, 1,914 students were chosen from across the country. They are currently submitting their semifinalist applications to be reviewed in January. After the review, 250 semifinalists will advance
as regional finalists with 150 becoming Coca-Cola Scholars. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation exists to better the world through investment in exceptional high school students who are dedicated to leadership, service and action that positively affect others.

Up to the Challenge Tasked by another school to perform 2,000 acts of kindness, students and staff at the John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District were certainly up to the challenge. Principal Faith Skelos answered the Kindness Challenge that came from the principal of Robert Seaman Elementary School in Jericho. At an assembly, Skelos showed students the video challenging Dinkelmeyer, talked to them about kindness and highlighted potential good deeds. Children learned how to be
bucket fillers by spreading kindness to others. From December 14th21st, students and staff completed 5,060 acts of kindness both in school and at home, far exceeding the goal. Good deeds performed throughout the week included a pajama drive organized by the sixth grade, a student donating her pennies to help needy children in Uganda and secondgraders writing thank you notes to staff members. Pictures of each fifth-grade student were hung in the hall, and classmates added Post-it notes to identify
and recognize individual acts of kindness. “We wanted to rise to the challenge,” Ms. Skelos said. “I’m very proud of our school. I’m proud of the children and I’m proud of the adults. It was a very positive experience and the goal is to keep it going.” At a closing assembly before the holiday break, Ms. Skelos acknowledged the many acts of kindness that students performed. The school will now create its own video and challenge three schools in other districts.
Festival of Lights First-graders in Camille Iovino-Coli’s class at East Meadow’s Barnum Woods Elementary School held a “Festival of Lights” party on December 21st to observe the different holidays celebrated in their class. Prior to the celebration, the children studied the variety of cultures, traditions and religious holidays celebrated by their fellow classmates.
They learned about the similarities and differences of Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Diwali. The main message IovinoColi hoped her students would take away is to be respectful of one another’s cultural diversity. For the festival, families brought in treats representing their ethnic backgrounds. The class and guests enjoyed latkes (a Jewish potato pancake),
Cozonac (a Romanian pound cake), kheer (a Muslim rice pudding) and Pfeffernusse (German gingerbread cookies). Additionally, each firstgrader received a poster with candy canes and a writing activity to identify their favorite holiday tradition. Responses included spending time with family, decorating the tree and opening presents.

Wonderland of Music Months of preparation and practice paid off on December 19th as students in the REACH program at W.T. Clarke Middle School and High School performed their winter concert. Students, teachers, central administrators and family members
gathered in Clarke High School’s Little Theatre to hear a variety of winter classics, including “Winter Wonderland,” “Let It Snow” and “Jingle Bell Rock.” Closing out the show, the students performed “We Wish You a Happy Holiday” in American Sign
Language with the help of Clarke High School students who are studying ASL. The East Meadow school community gives these young musicians a standing ovation for their talents and dedication.

Dinner Supports Gardens Old Westbury Gardens recently hosted its Annual December Dinner, the organization’s marquis fundraising event that brings together a renowned group of inspiring community members interested in maintaining Long Island’s rich history and traditions. The event, hosted by this year’s December Dinner Chairpersons Robert and Deb Hussey of Garden City, was held in the historic Red Ballroom and West Porch of Westbury House to recreate the holiday celebrations as
imagined in the early 20th century for an exclusive and extraordinary holiday experience. “Dining in a room that holds so much history and nostalgia was truly a unique experience for all who attended,” said Robert Hussey, Co-Chair of the December Dinner. “Complete with the historic Christmas decorations that lined the mantle and the rest of the room, it was like being transported through time. We are so grateful to those who took the time
to participate in this event and for their generosity to ensure that this fundraising event helped to preserve the future of Old Westbury Gardens for years to come.” During this year’s Annual December Dinner, renowned preservationist and Old Westbury Gardens Board Trustee Dick Gachot was honored for his long-term support for Old Westbury Gardens. Throughout his 40 year relationship with Old Westbury Gardens, Gachot has been involved in countless preservation
