Snowed In Last week’s column was entitled Coming Out of the Cold; this week, Snowed In. Sensing a theme here? January has always been my least favorite month. Apologies to those with birthdays and other assorted milestones which fall within this 31 day period; but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, I find nothing particularly exciting about it. For those who love snow, sure, there’s the potential for a few substantial blizzards to blow our way. But mostly, it’s a month that begins with the daunting process of undecking the halls and ends with faint hopes of a furry critter crawling out of a hole to determine just how much more cold weather we’ve yet to endure until spring beckons. Of course, let’s not forget the seemingly endless parade of holiday bills piling

up in the mailbox as we speak, as the horrifying realization of just how much we spent the previous month begins to set in. Joyful. But, as with anything, January is something we must contend with, for better or worse. And so, we attempt to make the best of it by cooking up big pots of chili, baking cookies and settling in with our fuzzy slippers and pajamas as we once again pick up that book we’ve been meaning to finish since we started it back on the beach sometime in July. There are the movies we never got around to seeing in theaters that have since found their way to our cable channels, maybe a Netflix series or two to binge watch, even – dare we say it – some long overdue cleaning out of the closets. {But not the dreaded Christmas Closet. No, January is not a long enough

month for such a daunting task.} Thrilling? Perhaps not. But let’s face it – these are the activities we are all the more unlikely to touch as the year wears on, as the snowflakes melt away and reveal the beginning buds and blossoms we so look forward to come spring. And, if you do happen to revel in the cold, blustery weather, this is your time. Brave the elements, take a hike, build a snowman . . . the white stuff won’t last forever. Resolutions, abstract goals – whatever form your inspiration takes in 2018 – are best served by consistency, by constant reevaluation and modification, if needed. January is just as important a month as any to not lose sight of the bigger picture even if it is a bit clouded by the frosted windowpane at the moment.

As part of their professional-level training, students regularly receive one-on-one guidance from experienced professionals working in the industry. Students have recently benefitted from Master Classes and Workshops lead by pop-rock icon Billy Joel; actor and director Ralph Macchio; legendary frontman Eric Bloom,

of the classic rock band Blue Oyster Cult; alumnus Michael Trusnovec, lead dancer in the Paul Taylor Dance Company; renowned sculptor Frank Porcu; and internationally acclaimed violinist Patrick Yim; to name only a few. They also get to perform alongside Broadway stars during the school’s annual fundraiser, Broadway Supports LIHSA. Alumni of the school have gone on to develop successful careers in all arts fields. In addition to landing starring roles on Broadway, alumni have danced with national touring companies, illustrated for New Yorker magazine, designed successful swimsuit lines, and embarked on technical careers working for companies such as Cirque de Soleil and at landmarks such as Lincoln Center. Bringing Smiles The Abbey Lane Elementary School community gathered on December 21st to celebrate the holiday season by touring the decorated school and raising approximately $500 to Smile Train, a nonprofit organization that provides free cleft repair surgery and comprehensive cleft care to children in developing countries around the world. The amount is enough to provide two children with the surgery needed to fix the cleft. More than 370 people attended the evening

event. Faculty members brought their own children to celebrate the night and help volunteer while MacArthur High School cheerleaders volunteered their time to serve hot cocoa and munchkins. Fifth-grade orchestra students performed holiday music under the guidance of music teacher Melissa Gscheidle and attendees participated in ornament decorating and received a special building tour facilitated by fourthand fifth-graders. The hallways were decorated in holiday

fashion and prior to the event, students and staff members decorated their classroom doors in their most creative and unique ways. The fourth- and fifthgraders led the tours and explained each decorative door to their guests. “It feels good to be a part of this event because it supports a wonderful cause,” said fifth grade tour guide Emma Delmar. “I hope that the families get to enjoy all the doors that all of the students and teachers decorated.”

Bringing Lit to Life Classic literature came alive at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District as students created scenes from well-known books. The makerspace activity, Reviving the Classics, was a partnership between librarian Sharon Roccaforte and fifth-grade teacher Laura Conway. Students worked in pairs and used various materials such as cardboard boxes

and tubes, Styrofoam balls, construction paper and blocks of wood to recreate their favorite scenes. Emerson Brill and Jocelyn Roth depicted the birthday party in the ballroom from “A Little Princess.” Victoria LoVasso and Brandon Tuohey selected “Gulliver’s Travels” and chose the part where Gulliver is tied down by the little people, using dental floss as the rope. Among other books chosen were “The Red

Badge of Courage,” “Treasure Island,” “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “Wind in the Willows.” The students also created their own book covers. Ms. Conway explained that her students are taking part in a 30-book challenge in which they not only have to read 30 books this year, but literature from different genres. The makerspace activity was a chance to generate interest in the classics.

Northside Elementary School students, families and staff recently participated in their annual “Toys for Children” holiday drive organized by John Theissen of the John Theissen Children’s Foundation

and coordinated by the school PTA. More than 800 new toys and games were donated for distribution to children in local hospitals. In addition, a “Giving Tree” was placed in the school’s lobby, adorned with paper cut-outs of

event. While I was speaking with Pastor Jim Ryan, he mentioned the inspiration behind being mobile. He explained, “Jesus didn’t make others come to Him to be helped, He went to them…that is why we operate in a mobile manner!” Lighthouse Mission’s Youth Outreach operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students and, on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this service for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. Week after week, many youth on Long Island gather for these events and enjoy a wonderful time together; for many children, the meal they receive at an event will be their only meal of the day. There is an overwhelming amount of people on Long Island who are in need, not only physically, but emotionally as well. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that truly cares for those they serve. They operate 100% on donations, receiving no government help. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so! They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are specifically in need of winter coat donations. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. All ages are welcome to volunteer! HOBY Ambassador

East Meadow High School sophomore Leilani Blakeman has been recognized as a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership ambassador for the 20172018 academic year. According to its website, HOBY, founded in 1958, is an organization that inspires and develops youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. As an ambassador, Leilani will participate with other teenagers in the HOBY Leadership Conference in June, where she will collaborate with recognized leaders in business, government, education and other professions to discuss

current world issues. Leilani was selected through a rigorous process that included an interview by faculty, administration and a former HOBY ambassador. She unanimously impressed the panel with her poise, confidence and genuine concern for others. Leilani is a very conscientious student who is enrolled in Advanced Placement and honors classes, and is involved in numerous extracurricular activities. She is a member of the school’s Model Congress, World Hunger Action and Key clubs, and is also an active member of the English, Social Studies and Tri-M Music honor

societies. With a passion for the arts, Leilani participates in the school’s Theatre Guild and serves as treasurer of the school’s choir. Outside of school, she takes private dance lessons and is active in the regional and local theater community. Her proudest moment in theater was making it to the final callback for the part of young Cosette in “Les Miserables,” on Broadway. “We are very proud to be represented by Leilani,” said guidance counselor Mona Allen. “She is mature, intelligent, sincere and a natural leader.”

Providing Hope Beyond the Food ... this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This organization was founded in 1992 by Sister Elaine when she received a vision from God to “Share the Gospel of Jesus and Feed the Poor.” From there, she humbly took to the streets of Long Island with 10 bologna and cheese sandwiches and did just that. Lighthouse Mission currently reaches 2,000 people per week with the same mission: sharing the Gospel of Jesus and feeding the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is now the president of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless. After recently meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved. I felt excitement for all they are doing and experienced such a renewed sense of hope. They are truly set apart from many other organizations because they purposefully accomplish much more than just feeding the hungry. Lighthouse Mission operates a Food Outreach as well as a Youth Outreach. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays (in Coram and Ronkonkoma), Wednesdays (in Central Islip), Thursdays (in Shirley and Port Jefferson Station), Fridays (in Riverhead and Centereach) and Saturdays (in Patchogue and Bellport). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, they chose to go mobile and travel to different locales where those in need can line up and receive plenty of nutritional food, gentlyused clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the
