Once again students at Levy Lakeside School in Merrick conducted a toy drive to benefit Toys for Tots. Lakeside School collected seven large bags filled with toys, which will be distributed to local families in the area through Merrick Kiwanis
Club. “It always feels great to join in on such a worthy cause, especially when we know we will be making kids happy during the holiday season,” said Madeline, a student at Lakeside School. “Kids helping kids, there is no
better way to celebrate the holidays!” Toys for Tots is a program spearheaded by the United States Marine Corps Reserve to distribute toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas.

The Charity of the Month for January is: YMCA Long Island www.ymcali.org
The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,
Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/ Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Wantagh High School’s National Honor Society inducted 70 new members during a traditional candlelighting ceremony, held in the auditorium on Dec. 3. The evening featured words of wisdom from administrators, musical interludes from the high school’s string chamber ensemble and the singing of the national anthem by Katriana Koppe. Principal Carolyn Breivogel told the inductees that “the small things they do defines their character,” and that as members of the honor society, they represent the “difference between right and wrong, action and inaction.” Superintendent of Schools John McNamara encouraged the inductees to be innovators and to explore their passions. Additionally, Board of Education Presi-
dent Elizabeth Guber noted that the inductees embody the values of Mr. Fred Rogers. Keynote speaker and English teacher Julie Magnuson compared the inductees to Odysseus and his epic journey in “The Odyssey.” “Like Odysseus, you are leaders,” she said. “You are the kids who will change the world. Keep your eyes on the goal and find your Ithaca.” Society trustees Alyssa Albanese, Theodore Hostetter, Elizabeth Maher and Katherine Mazzer lit the ceremonial candles, representing the tenets of scholarship, leadership, service and character, while co-vice presidents William Hostetter and Juliet Watstein led the inductees in the Society pledge. Each inductee was called to the stage where he or she
received a certificate, representing membership in the honor society. The trustees also received their gold capes and National Honor Society pin, which will be worn during the spring’s graduation ceremony. During her closing remarks, co-president Elizabeth Byrnes remarked, “What you are doing is full of purpose and integrity.” She also reminded the inductees to be sure to enjoy their school year and membership in the honor society. Co-president Kaitlin Steingruebner also told the inductees that, as members, they are someone who others look up to and that they are capable and prepared to continue on their journey as National Honor Society members.

“Missile Tow For The Holidays” A Nike missile similar to those that defended Long Island during The Cold War gets a holiday wreath at the Museum of American Armor by Joey Ferrara, 8 years old, of Lindenhurst, with an assist from his father Joseph Ferrara. Ferrara was among the Atlantic Crane team that included Operating Engineers Local 138 and Teamsters Local 282 that donated time, expertise and equipment
to tow and install the Nike, as a permanent exhibit at the military museum inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration as a tribute to those who defended the region during the Cold War. Local 138 Business Manager and Treasury, John Duffy, stated, “We believe we have a solemn responsibility to pay tribute to those who have served our armed forces. This effort sustains that
commitment and allows us to salute those who defended our nation during the height of the Cold War.” The Museum of American Armor is a New York State chartered, 501 C 3, not for profit museum. Located at 1303 Round Swamp Road inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Old Bethpage, it is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The loyalty from Captain Dave and his unit and the dog that they rescued goes both ways, and now his wish is to bring her back home to the United States with him when he returns soon. Guardians of Rescue have helped other military members pull off this same mission, and they are seeking public donations to help pull it off again. Along with paying fees to allow the dog to leave, there is medical care, airfare, and other relocation expenses involved. Some of the other men had even seen the dog being abused out on the streets. Soon, Sox began staying by their side all of the time, even tagging along on some of their missions. On a recent patrol, Sox ventured too far away from the unit and was whipped with a stick by a local. It was at that time that Captain Dave knew he could never leave her behind to fend for herself. “The bond I have with Sox is something I didn’t expect, but I just can’t leave her behind,” says Captain Dave. “If I don’t bring her home with me I am afraid I’ll always regret it and wonder about what happened to her. I appreciate any assistance people can give in helping me to bring her home with me.” Relocating a dog from the Middle East to America can be done, but it comes at a high cost. We are grateful to be working with Nowzad shelter in Kabul, because without their assistance this pup would not have a chance of coming to America.” Captain Dave is stationed in a remote area in Afghanistan. He is scheduled to come back home to the United States in early 2020. He can’t imagine leaving Sox behind because he loves her. He first saw Sox when she was a puppy, finding her caught in concertina wire in their camp. He
Under the direction of Peter Kravitz, Wantagh Warrior high school journalists garnered six individual awards during the annual Empire State Scholastic Press Association contest, held at Syracuse University. The district’s single gold award was received by current senior Nicole Hooker in the sports news category for an article she wrote on last year’s girls soccer team. Grace Anne McKenna won the only silver award for
the district in the news story category and is the only Wantagh student-journalist to win an ESSPA award four consecutive years. She is currently attending Boston College and has already been published in the college’s The Heights. Honorable Mention awards were also earned by co-authors Kayla Doyle and Juliana Cupelli in the sports columnist category for an article on cheerleading and Julia Ferrara in the
